What is the obsession with taking a QB in the draft?

Recommended Posts

The people who are obsessed with drafting a quarterback early in the NFL draft are those that recognize the fact that winning franchises in the NFL have an exclusive stranglehold on the best players at the most important position in professional sports.

With a mediocre-to-below-average quarterback, you hope for a freak playoff run between years battling toward 7-9.

With an elite quarterback, you have a tantrum the one year out if 10 that you actually MISS the playoffs.

The difference is obvious to those of us who haven't lowered our standards.

... The guy is the next Vince Young his throwing mechanics are very similar to Youngs and he doesn't have the best field vision and pocket presence either ...

Really? Two pages and NO ONE calls him out for that?

It's clear you haven't watched Cam play. Or Young. They do not have similar throwing motions. Not even close. Young has always had a jerky/odd throwing motion. Newton has pretty close to a text book motion. His footwork needs work, but that can be said of most young QBs.

Let's be real for a moment, since you refuse to be honest in your posts. This thread (for you) isn't about how much you like Fitz, it's about how much you dislike Newton. That's fine, you have every right to your opinion. But at least be a man and be up front with what you really want to say. Don't hide it. And don't make up ridiculous "facts" like

Rothlisburger won a superbowl behind a bad O line. Manning gets it done.

It's a QB driven league, you have to have a franchise QB to win in this league. If the QB is there you take him. You can get tackles in mid rounds, not the case with QB. Accurate, quick decision making takes the pressure off of the O line.

Accurate quick decision making is actually what Fitz is known for. He does his piece. He decides, is fearless and the ball comes out fast. The team does not run the ball well, it's O Line is thin and sad and its WR group is just now above average. So what is the problem with Fitz? He actually should have a much improved 2011 with no Edwards in the way, IMO. Drafting a clown like Newton who has played a dozen competitive football games just makes a mess out of the QB position, again. But it will sell tickets.

Their are NO elite QBs in this draft. Give it up. The year the Bills draft #3 there are no QBs. Figures.

Yes, but draft a quarterback early does not automatically equate to that guy being an elite quarterback.

There's only one potentially elite guy and that's Cam Newton. However by all accounts from the experts, he's a boom/bust type.

Gabbert will probably end up being a decent starter, certainly not an elite guy. The rest of the QBs in this class are backups.

So if you're talking about wanting an elite type guy, then it's Newton in the 1st round. Otherwise, forget about it.

The point of drafting a QB now is to develop the young QB BEHIND Fitz. It's really not that hard of a concept to grasp. Fitz's contract is up after this season. You really wanna give a career back up QB, a franchise QB type money?

Chan's gained my trust that he can mentor pretty much any QB that he sees fit. If not, he doesn't beat around the bush like Jauron did. You draft a QB now, sit him for a year or 2, and then plug him into the starting lineup.

First off, who exactly is this young QB that's going to be "developed" behind Fitz? All I see are a lot of "maybe" guys in this draft.

Second, as to paying Fitz franchise QB money, the only way that happens is if other teams see him that way and bid up his next contract. If, as you believe, he is NOT a franchise QB, then that won't happen. However, there is a fly in that particular bucket of ointment, that the Bills improve enough that other teams indeed start noticing.

In any case, I agree that a franchise QB should definitely be on the Bills wish list. It's just that I don't see one in this year's draft, though I coming more and more to think that Ponder might be a middle-of-the-draft pick who could really help the Bills.

Name the last team to make the playoffs with arguably the worst defense in the NFL? Teams can win with an average QB...win the super bowl even (Yes, I know it's the exception to the rule), but teams cannot be successful with a horrible defense.

And you plan on fixing this horrible defense with 1 draft pick?

I didn't say that there were. I was simply explaining why those of us who really follow NFL football aren't satisfied with Ryan Fitzpatrick and recognize that the only true way to resurrect the franchise is to hit on a elite-level quarterback.

Is it easy? No.

Is it a guarantee that drafting a qb high yields an elite-level player? No.

Does that mean that the Bills should be scared to try? No.

A lot of mock drafts by draft experts and a lot of posters here seem to think that the Bills need to pick a QB in the first 2-3 rounds. I don't get this obsession. Didn't Fitz just have a pretty good season in terrible circumstances? The guy had no ground game, inconsistent O-line play (A very bad right side of the line), no tightend to throw to, and a defense that consitantly put him in situations where he had to be one dimensional.

The team has too many holes to waste a pick on a QB especially when there isn't really a franchise QB at pick 3. Newton screams bust and Gabbert to me isn't that much better than Fitz could be.

Why is there this consistent feeling to use top 3 picks on project QB's like Mallet, Ponder, and Locker and a good amount of posters feel that Newton or Gabbert should be the pick at 3?

Are there more people who think that Fitz should be given a chance in 2011?

The Bills have gone so long without a franchise quarterback and a winning team that it is looking like alot of Bills fans have forgotten or never knew what either of the two looked like.

- Fitz ranked 22nd in QB rating.

- Fitz ranked 22nd in the league in passing yards.

- Fitz ranked 27th in completion percentage.

- Fitz ranked 21st in yards per attempt.

- Fitz ranked 16h in passing yards per game.

- Fitz ranked 9th in interceptions.

In sum, Fitz was mostly a below average QB while being in the top 10 in the league in pass attempts per game. That's not having a good season. That's being easily impressed because of all the crap we've had at QB over the years.

Also, who in the hell is talking about using our 3rd overall pick on Mallett, Ponder, or Locker?

Sad, but true.

He had some great moments, provided a spark and played better than Edwards...

That's not really a "good" year though, unfortunately.
