 We are about to see whether Spiller is a class act or a puppet on the string of his agent ... the parameters are set. The Bills just have to plug in the numbers because that's the way this system works ... Mr. MAY-BE showed his lack of committment last year and now we are watching the game of agent versus player ...

If Spiller and his agent think they deserve more than what they are slotted to receive then I think the Bills should just stand strong ... with next season in limbo Mr. Spiller just might be waiting a long time before he sees any guaranteed monies ...

As I said in another thread, the parameters are not quite set. Tyson Alualu and Jacksonville, taken one pick after Spiller.

Thanks for posting, Papazoid, and thanks to Uforesircher for posting a similar thread yesterday.

edit: It's not official yet but Ryan Mathews, San Diego RB picked at #12 is apparently signed.

It seems like there is some reasoning behind some of these unsigned players.

1. Sam Bradford QB St. Louis Signed Six years, $78 million ($50M guaranteed)

2. Ndamukong Suh DT Detroit Unsigned

3. Gerald McCoy DT Tampa Bay Signed Five years, $63 million ($35M guaranteed)

15 million dollar difference in overall money and guaranteed money.

Now contrast that with some of the signed picks that come next. They're all pretty close.

3. Gerald McCoy DT Tampa Bay Signed Five years, $63 million ($35M guaranteed)

4. Trent Williams OT Washington Signed Six years, $60 million ($36.75M guaranteed)

5. Eric Berry SS Kansas City Signed Six years, $60 million ($34M guaranteed)

Look at Okung, there's some distance between Berry and Haden

5. Eric Berry SS Kansas City Signed Six years, $60 million ($34M guaranteed)

6. Russell Okung OT Seattle Unsigned

7. Joe Haden CB Cleveland Signed Five years, $50M million ($26M guaranteed)

10 million difference with 9 million in guaranteed.

Now you get to the Bills area and it's very similar with the added kink of the player right behind him still not having signed yet either.

8. Rolando McClain LB Oakland Signed Five years, $40 million ($23M guaranteed)

9. C.J. Spiller RB Buffalo Unsigned

10. Tyson Alualu DE Jacksonville Unsigned

11. Anthony Davis OT San Francisco Signed Five years, $26.5 million ($16M guaranteed)

13.5 million difference between surrounding signed picks and 7 million in guaranteed.

A lot of the unsigned picks have relatively large gaps in the dollars of the agreements surrounding them. It's not really surprising that he's unsigned and it's likely to take awhile to play out since the guy behind him hasn't signed.

I don't really understand why fans expect a 20-21 year old player, fresh from college, to ignore the advice of an agent he hired for the specific purpose of getting him the best possible deal. Unless there are concerns the agent is dishonest or not working in the player's best interest, the best thing a guy can do is let the agent do his job.

Here's what I don't get... Spiller can't sign because the #9 guy isn't signed; therefore, we don't know the precise ballpark of his negatiations. But how can Alualu sign when he doesn't know the #8 guy's contract? Are fans sitting on a Jag's board saying the same thing about why their first round pick isn't signed?

I guess my point is that someone just needs to give a little and get the deal done - whether it be the FO or Spiller. There's no need to drag this thing out more than a couple of more days. The slotting is all but set; just get it done. If Spiller isn't in camp by Wed. one or both parties is just being an ass.

Spiller IS the #9 pick.

Mathews is the guy that was holding up Spiller's deal.

He's the next RB to be taken after Spiller. No agent wants to get less for his guy than a guy that plays the same position that's taken after him. Look for about $30m with $20m of that guaranteed.

#9; #8. You know what I mean. Dislexia gets us all sooner or later.

Same argument, though. So why do we have to wait on Mathews? Maybe Mathews is waiting on Spiller to set his value? Someone has to give, that's all I'm saying. And given how bad we supposedly needed this play maker, what's a few million over the next 5 years?

Bull ****. they are not set. He is the top RB in the draft, he is the top non QB specialist in the draft.

And on another note, Spiller has been a success for years at the college level. Maybin should NEVER have been on the field if not for the rightful starter not being able to play at penn st.

Walks into the room. Approaches Dan from behind and quietly taps him on the shoulder.

Whispering in his ear, he says, "Pssst! Mathews signed."

Look for Spiller to be in camp early this week.

while i understand your point......for some, you are comparing apples to oranges (5yr vs 6yr deals)..... take your OKUNG example.....the players immediately above and below him are BOTH making an average of $10 million per year, so all they have left to argue about is guaranteed money.

your point does come into play for Spiller, who has a significant gap between the guy above him and two below.

+1. Is The Dean the only voice of reason here? Damn.

Pivoting off of Dean's point, at some point, the blame has to be placed on the Bills front office. I'm not sure why, but it seems that in Buffalo, it is always the player's fault first. Sure, we rip on the FO. But, the players are always the first ones to get assaulted (unless you happen to be Eric Wood, in which case the only thing he could do to get Bills fans to want to fellate him more is grow a fu manchu). The FO has run this team into the ground for an entire decade. Yet when it comes to contract situations, the fans collectively give the front office a free pass. I'm not sure why that is. Every team has a good idea of how much a certain draftee is going to cost them. Especially a team like the Bills, who have essentially been picking in the same draft spot for the past 10 years.

I would love for Spiller to get to camp ASAP. And I don't think he'll pull an Aaron Maybin. But, if he does. I urge you to ask the FO why they can't come to terms. Unless he is asking for upwards of $28 million guaranteed, he is not being unreasonable. And if he isn't being unreasonable, the Bills should get him into camp.

To an extent, I'd give the FO a pass because these numbers are beyond ridiculous for guys that have never seen a pro football field. I know this is the way the system works and that agents are the evil that is ruining all of professional sports as we know it, but at some point, someone's gotta step up and say enough is enough.

That said, I'm still hoping for some professionalism to take over and for both parties to realize they need to come to an agreement. Spiller is more important to the Bills this year than Maybin was last year. Get him in now.

Just spitballing here but is it possible that the money portion is the easy part but it's the length of the deal that might be the sticking point? Some of the picks are going 6 years, giving an extra year to prorate that signing bonus, while the majority are going 5 years.

Knowing the Bills tendancy to be a little tighter (cash-to-cap) with their money, they might be trying to squeeze out that 6th year of the contract just to be able keep the cap hit down on a year to year basis.

That's exactly right. The frustration that I have is that the Bills always seem to be waiting for the other teams to set the market. All 32 teams are in the same boat. Somebody has to start signing players. We're several years now that we're right at the tail end.

If we're at the tail end a day before training camp begins that's fine, but this is a team that can't afford their #9 pick to not be in training camp when they're trying to right themselves after a decade of futility.

I'd love to see some metric that looks at the last 10 years, ranks what order the first round signed in each year and then averages each team across their rankings. I would be real curious to see where the Bills fell??

It's possible...maybe even likely. But to me, it still falls into the professionalism comment I made. Stop haggling over 1 measly year (I know, $$$$) and get things going now. They can always negotiate an extension when Spiller is leading the league in all-purpose yards three years down the road.
