wgr 550 talks about jim kelly

I was just listening to WGR and they made many disparaging comment about Jim's appearance on Jim Rome. I really think they missed his point. I can't speak for Jim but I'm sure when he was talking about Cali quarterbacks, he was talking about mental toughness and what it takes to play in Buffalo. You'd think that they being in the business they'd be able to recognize when someone is talking metaphorically.

Is this refering to when Jim Kelly said that the Bills needed to stop getting QBs from California, and then suggested they draft one from Florida? Cause that made alot of sense.

His comment about California QBs was not one of his finer moments.

I'd take one more shot with a Cali QB. Clausen or a lineman with our 1st pick. Brady is a Cali QB. He's done OK in cold weather. It has nothing to do with being from California and everything to do with our draft evaluators. Kelly better not be in that group.

The point is not whether you could never find a QB from California who could play in Buffalo. I'm sure that that would be possible. What Kelly is trying to say clearly is that you have to have a certain toughness to play in cold weather that especially TE did not have. When you have a QB like TE say after a loss that that was the first time he ever played in snow and that he has a lot to learn about it, that is not a good sign. The Bills have lost whatever weather advantage they once had mostly because of attitudes like that. Compare that remark to Joe Ferguson, from Louisiana and who played at the U. of Arkansas. Joe said he realized early on that he would have to master the winds at what was then called Rich Stadium and he did and nearly always outplayed opposing QBs in rough weather in home games, even QBs who were considered much better QBs than he was.

Now, whole teams, like the Patsies, routinely outplay Buffalo in bad weather in Buffalo, taking advantage of the bad weather much better than the Bills. Look at the last game against the Patsies in 2008 as an example. The game against the Colts at the end of this season was an exception to that. The Colts are much worse in bad weather, including Manning, than the Bills.

You might also add Jack Kemp and Darryl LaMonica to Cali QBs who've played for BFLO. And I believe Joe Ferguson hardly ever saw a snowflake until he moved to WNY. Weather didn't seem to bother Mark Sanchez this past year. Carson Palmer does alright in Cincinnati. John Elway surely did okay in Denver. Warren Moon made his reputation in...Canada. And I believe several people around here have supported bringing Jeff Garcia in. No less than Bill Walsh endorsed Trent Edwards as the second coming of Joe Montana. So maybe, just maybe, it isn't where the QB comes from but the TEAM and the COACHES that guy gets in his career that really matters. As, for example, Drew Brees under Sean Payton. Do you think anybody in the San Diego front office is banging their heads against the wall today?

Thank you for understanding the true meaning of my comments on kelly.

Nah, California QBs suck.

Sincerely,

John Elway (Granada Hills HS, Stanford U.)

Troy Aikman (b. West Covina, UCLA)

Dan Fouts (b. San Francisco, St. Ignatius HS)

Warren Moon (Alexander Hamilton HS, West Los Angeles JC)

Tom Brady (b. San Mateo, Junipero HS)

Excellent points and examples.

And I am a Garcia proponent.

I agree that both Walsh and Levy liked Edwards coming out of Stanford where all he did was pick himself off of the turf.

Under the Mularkey (that name is so funny) era, we had Sam Wyche as QB coach. Before that both Williams and Jauron after chose not to focus on QB development with hiring a specialist.

Now, Gailey has brought in a QB coach who has some big names attached to his resume on having a hand in grooming. Its about time. Gailey is also offensive minded, which Ralph can deny it as much as he wants but this change in overall perspective at the head coaching position, IMO, will pay dividends for our offense for years to come.

I think we need to bring in a starting veteran (Garcia), and younger, solid #2 (Thigpen), draft a QB in the 2nd (Pike), and let Brohm and Edwards duel it out with the rookie for a roster spot. Edwards has 1 year left on his current deal, and I think he was thrown into the fire too soon and never given proper coaching. The concussion did not help along with our porous offensive line. IMO, Edwards has never had a chance TO develop!

As far as San Diego, they had Brees coming off major shoulder surgery and had a promising 1st round QB in Rivers chomping at the bit to get on the field. In the free agent, dollars and cents era of today's NFL, Brees was questionable as to whether he could regain his form, and the Chargers had invested big time in what they hoped would be their QB of the future.

It was a calculated gamble, and I don't think anyone in San Diego is hurting themselves at all over Brees.

Exactly the point I was going to make. Another southerner who's done OK in cold weather: Brett Favre in Green Bay.

We all want to come up with simple answers. Sometimes there's more to it.

It's all in the players' mentality. I distinctly remember Edwards being interviewed in his parents living room after being drafted. I was hoping to find a YouTube link but no dice. He seemed a little stunned that he was going to be playing "so far away" from his California home.

If I heard a kid seem hesitant about playing in cold weather, I wouldn't draft him period.
