Poor San Diego might have a home blackout this week

Those poor folks. I guess the Sunshine, sand and mexican food is too much of a distraction.

A few things that stick out.

- Their stadium is too big? really? and how is it that only 56,500 tickets count towards lifting a blackout?

- Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally an awesome date for a home game. Lot's of locals are back in town (at least in Buffalo!)

- The economy, opponent and HDTV are not unique to San Diego.

Simple solution to the San Diego situation. Move the team slightly north into LA territory. The best of both worlds. If you are a San Diego fan the team is still within reach and the organization can tap into a more expansive market. The Bills might take a similar strategy into Canada and the Toronto market.

Many people living in SoCal are from someplace else so just the opposite happens there than what happens in WNY. Many people travel "home" to visit family over Thanksgiving. So that weekend helps areas like Buffalo, it hurts areas such as SD.

If only the Chargers were playing well, & had something to play for, the game might be interesting enough to attract a few more fans.

The Chargers have struggled to sell out numerous games this season. With help from the NFL granting extensions, the Chargers have been able to sell most of their games. Even selling tickets for the game against the arch-enemy Raiders went down to the wire. It is true that many from San Diego are from all around the country and all around the world. Many people have already left. This morning, the freeways were noticeably light. Getting out of the SD airport (Lindbergh Field) between now and Thanksgiving can be hell. And yes, the economy in CA. is hurting.. The foreclosure mess has hit the locals hard. And when considering that this Sunday the opponent is the struggling Chiefs, the excitement isn't as high. Typically, a game in San Diego attracts a large number of fans for the opposing team. So Chiefs fans most likely will be back home and for those that remain why spend the money to see their team get beaten up. The Chargers do have a lot to play for as they now lead the AFC West after winning five in a row and control their future. I don't believe the Chargers are going away. If that was the case, I believe that the Spanos family would have already moved. There is now talk about building a downtown stadium in an area that is currently blighted.

There are two MAJOR problems with the Chargers building a new stadium downtown:

1. There is no room. It would be the smallest area that any stadium in the country has to build. Parking would be near impossible, and tailgating would be non-existent.

2. They have no money. San Diego is incredibly broke. Their current stadium is a mess, and they can't even afford to improve what they've got. I don't see how they can finance this.

San Diego and Jacksonville should be the top 2 candidates for relocation.

There was talk about Chula Vista? That would make the most sense. There is a MTBE plume approaching the stadium. large aboveground storage tanks are located nearby.

Fixed.

The Chula Vista, Oceanside and the downtown port locations are all past tense. The new one sounds like a possibility. Downtown SD used to be even more blighted. It was a place for boozing, peep shows and many forms of vice (think TJ) "serving" mostly sailors and Marines. It sounds fun but it was very dangerous. Then some people took chances on building a major shopping mall (Horton Plaza) and a convention center and slowly buildings started shooting up ex.: office buildings, hotels, condos (many which are currently unoccupied) restaurants and bars. The area is a clash of rich and poor but very popular for locals and visitors. They built a beautiful baseball stadium (with city funding and political dirty pool). East of the downtown area is still blighted. The development has displaced some of the blight and especially the homeless. SD is struggling for revenue much like the rest of CA. and communities all across the country. Don't think that the city of SD is going to build a football stadium by itself as it is still struggling to build a new downtown library and city hall. The state and the city may have a minor role but private development must stand up. People were also skeptical about parking for the baseball stadium but it hasn't been a big problem even during sell outs. And don't doubt the intensity or loyalty of Charger fans. Success breeds both qualities in a new generation of fans. The Chargers have been competitive for some time now. SD may have a lot of transplants but many of their kids become Charger fans. How many Bills fans first became fans during the Bills run of success in the late 80's and 90's? It is a similar story in that regard.

I believe SD has the seventh or eighth largest population in the US. Their not real fans like the ones in Buffalo. It's entertainment for them.

haha, that's an awesome double meaning...

You are correct. Alot of people leave town for the holidays. Myself included. Although I am trying to get back in time to see the game in person.

Its Wednesday, the Bolts usually got a lot of last minute ticket sales....a few factors at play here. First, these are not Bills tickets..meaning a cheap seat is $75 and a good seat is $150 so it's a big purchase. I agree that many people return to their original homes over the holidays but heck there are enough locals.

They will sell out, it will just be at the last minute. We're blessed with some big businesses and local casinos that stand to profit with the game on TV locally. It will sell-out.

I'd love to see the new stadium in downtown SD next to Petco Park...would be a crazy scene w/ the gaslamp district so close.

Well according to the web site I just looked at the ave ticket price for SD is $81 compared to the Bills $52, however the premium seating price, the ave for the Chargers is $170 compared to the Bills $158 so save your bs for somewhere else. The fallacy that you could take a family 4 to a bills game for under $100 is just that a fallacy. The only reason that that the ave ticket price for buffalo is so low is that they have the rockpile seats which I think go for ablout $35 a piece. My season ticket cost $70 per game which is right in line with the Chargers tickets. I think not selling out has more to do with the 20% unemployment rate you guys are sporting right now & the collapse of the housing market in socal.
