  1. This gets thrown around way too much on this board. "Finding a way to win".

This denotes the team overall played poorly, was outplayed by the other team, was losing for much of the game, but made a key play or got some luck somehow at the end and pulled it out.

That wasn't what happened yesterday. Not even close.

    1) The Bills never trailed and led for 57 minutes of the game.

    2) Up 24-6, the 18 point deficit was the largest the Chargers have faced all year.

    3) The Bills snapped the longest streak in the NFL of 12 consecutive 1 score games the Chargers have played.

Now...if you want to say they didn't play their best, then yes I would agree. But they sure didn't play poorly. They made Herbert look very average to below average much of the game. They took away Allen and Williams from the passing game most of the day. They ran the ball exceptionally well. They stopped the run very well except for 1 long run. Special teams played well.

They had a series of 7 plays that they probably want back that resulted in 3 turnovers. It happens. The Bills are not especially turnover prone usually.

    Can they play better? Yeah.

Do the Bills "let other teams back into games" more than most good teams? No not really. Look around the NFL...teams that are up big ens up holding on for dear life at the end of games more often than not.

Is it realistic to think they will play their best every game? No. No team in the NFL does. If you think they do, you simply don't watch much football other than the Bills games apparently.

Does this mean they "found a way to win"? No. They kind of dominated the game and cruised to victory even though they hit a few potholes on the way. The game was never really in doubt at any point.

Some people really need to get some perspective with their over the top dramatics.

Ok so this week was "finding a way to put a team that should have lost by 25+ back into a one score game in the 4th quarter"

Yes...because the Chargers have clearly lost by 25 points every game this season. The Bills actually broke the Chargers streak of most consecutive one score games at 12.

How about know what you are talking about before posting. Far better to not post anything and let people think you don't know much than post and confirm it.

    Just now, Jauronimo said:

By struggled do you mean they led the game wire to wire, never trailed, and won by 2 scores?

Led for like 57 minutes out of 60. Clearly they badly struggled.

I wouldn’t say cruising. More like sputtering. But style points never count, anyway. Like they saying goes, they don’t ask how, only how many. And right now, that’s a nice 8.

Leading for 57 out of 60 minutes in a game, and building a 3 score lead, I consider cruising.

Every week we get a "hear me out" thread (but 50% of the time it's "here me out" because the OP is illiterate/drunk/both).

Chances are if you have to say "hear me out" you're already behind the 8 Ball with your take...

The Cardinals game was supposed to be the "sloppy win" game until they found a way to lose it.

This team needs to start figuring out how to keep its foot on the gas pedal for four full quarters.

Interesting article in the Athletic today about what went wrong in Detroit.  Synopsis: Patricia and Quinn bought too much into the Patriots' philosophy of waiting for the other team to make a mistake ("More NFL games are lost than won") and as a result, they'd play passively and let opponents back into games.  Over and over again.

McD needs to make sure he doesn't fall into the same trap.  It's trending that way.  Play to win.  Don't wait for the other team to hand you the win - go take it for yourselves.

You mean like how they still aggressively were blitzing Herbert in the last 2 minutes?

Sometimes I wonder if people see what they want to see to fit a narrative they want to write.

I am glad we are winning.

I honestly didnt see this team being this good offensively.

Very happy to see Josh really take over this team and perform.

Finding a way to win is a good thing.

But we shouldnt be finding a way to win every week. There are games we should just be outright winning at this point.

So yeah, if we want to be a real contender we need to shape up towards the ends of these games and close opponents out.

I mean they were up 24-6, never trailed, and had the Chargers facing the biggest deficit they faced all year at 18 points.

    This was cruising to victory.

Finding a way to win denotes the team was outplayed most of the game, losing for much of it and then somehow pulled it out in the last minute.

This was not even close to that game. People really need to get some perspective on what the hell they are talking about. The Bills were the better team almost all game long and played like it for most of the game.

I am usually tough on the Bills and after yesterday's game, came away not very happy.  Mostly it is always about the offense & yesterday they were out of sync & Bosa just killed them.  Disjointed and just not a great game to watch.

Concerned that they seem flat of late (outside of Seattle game).

As for the running game, really it only came to life late in the game, and while stats look good, it put them in a hole early in the game.

Again want to see a really dominant game (heck look at Atl yesterday).

But this week I'll give them a pass.  However no excuse vs. SF 49'ers & looking ahead to the Steelers, or similar excuses.

A pass for what? They won the game and the Chargers faced their biggest deficit of the season of 18 points when they were down 24-6 in it.

No passes, no excusing away the win, no rationalizing.

The Bills, like many other good teams win games when they don't play their best still. Sometimes even comfortably. That is the sign of a good team. This is not unusual, nor is it realistic to think they will play their best every game.

The only thing I think of when I read stuff like this is that the person saying this watches very little football outside of Bills games.

This is ridiculous. Any one player could spread the disease. If he tests negative on Saturday, but it positive Sunday, then what? The league is playing with fire right now.

They are tested on game days now. Obviously this did not happen. They do contact tracing to determine who is in proximity.

This game made me question a couple things.  Number 1, why weren't the Broncos doing what the Bills are doing with their QB's (Isolating at least one from the rest of the team)?  It makes no sense to have all of your QB's together with what we know about this virus.  And number 2, why couldn't the league find a way to reschedule this game?  The Ravens had their game moved because of some Covid cases, but the Broncos were without the most important position and they couldn't find a way to work that out for them?  Just seems strange to me.

    For the umpteenth time.

The league DOES NOT reschedule games due to what players are out. It only reschedules games if it is determined to be medically necessary due to there being COVID outbreaks on the team that could result in transmission dangers.

The Broncos QBs were on the COVID list for close contact with a player that tested positive and had no masks or tracking devices for much of the time. They did not test positive themselves. They also did not cooperate with the investigation by the NFL.

It is very simple. Games get moved when there is an active outbreak of COVID with multiple players testing positive over multiple days NOT when there is an isolated case and other players out due to being in contact.

The NFL doesn't give a crap who is out for a team if they deem it safe to play the game.

  8. Not to try and bag on them, but they need to step their game up a little for having an article being written about them...they donated a little over $1K in the 2 days since Patricia waa fired.

In the article they mention the Bills donating to Dalton and Josh Allen's charities...

Hopefully they can get up to at least $25K for Watson...

No, just tired of hearing about only the Bills not playing good teams in "x" game but ignoring the fact that other teams feast on beating bad teams for a lot of wins also.

There is no need to apologize for the schedule you are given but people on this board seemingly want the Bills to play the Chiefs or Steelers every week or the wins aren't "good enough".

Point taken, but to be fair those wins came from 2018 Jags, 2019 Phins, 2020 Chargers and all of those games were close.  Notice how we performed the week after the bye weeks.  2018 and 2019 we got destroyed.

Yes, the W is the most important stat but none of those victories were convincing and were against bottom feeder teams.

I am sure the Bills will petition the league to schedule them against a good team after their bye and ask to rearrange the schedule in-season if the team they are playing after the bye proves to not be very good...you know....just to make you happy so you can't make excuses for their wins after the bye because they came against "bad" teams.  Never mind that the Steelers are 10-0 and Browns are 8-3 in large part because they play the AFC South and NFC East this year...only the Bills play bad teams tho right?

I don't get the whole thing. A Ravens staff member admittedly broke NFL Covid protocols so they were negligent as well. So if a staff member breaks the rule it's ok and the team gets to have their game moved? This whole thing is a mess.

No...games are moved when it is MEDICALLY NECESSARY, as in when playing would potentially transmit the disease from one player to another player due to there being an active COVID outbreak on a team.  If there is no outbreak and it is NOT medically necessary, the games are played. I am not sure how else to word this so you can comprehend it better.  It doesn't seem to be that difficult to understand.

If there is a chance to  spread the virus by playing, move the game. If there is not, then play the game.  It has nothing to do with who started it, or how it started or anything else.

That's true. The Saints game plan was, wisely, ultra conservative.

Having said that, the Broncos, who still have a good defense, didn't allow Hill to do much, and Hill looked confused much of the time when he was supposed to throw. But with zero offense from the Broncs, it was inevitable that they'd wear down and the Saints would put up enough points to win comfortably. That's exactly what happened. The game would've been closer if the Broncos had simply punted it away on 1st down each time they took possession rather than giving up 2 INTs and one fumble. That's how pathetic the offense was.

I thought it would be fun to watch but it was incredibly boring and inept...I turned it off the watch the Chiefs game after the first quarter.

BTW, I would be really Mad as a chargers’ fan. Hebert took at least three shots to the knees today.

I don't get the rule either, because you see sacks almost every game where the defender is on the ground and then lunges and gets the QB around the legs and no penalty flag is thrown for it.

The Saints ran for 230 yards or so...basically I think they thought if we get to 17 points, there is no way the Broncos can win the game, so why risk throwing it when turnovers would be the only way for them to have any chance of winning.

This is exactly what I've been saying 🤣 these great teams we are saying we're not as good as win these ugly games all the time.  We're comparing ourselves to the chiefs and saying we are not playoff caliber but who is when thats the measuring stick lol

The Chiefs allowed TB to come back from 17-0 and 27-10 leads to hold on 27-24...it just is how the NFL works these days. The only exception is if you get some defensive TDs or a bunch of turnovers where they add to the score, like the Falcons did to the Raiders today.

For two weeks in a row the Bills have failed to stop the Hail Mary.  Slightly different circumstances but you know where this is heading.  Does McDermott have a conversation with Frasier and do they practice for it or even discuss it in the defensive team meetings?  It cost us a win and nearly a second.  It just seems uncanny that the opposing receivers are getting the ball and Bills defenders cannot knock it away.   I'll be curious to see if McD is asked about it.

This time there were 4 or 5 players around the ball instead of 3...maybe they should get 9 or 10 back there??

What woulda happened if Denver was on the playoff bubble? Denver woulda been pretty pissed having to play with no QB while other teams games get changed.

Different situation. The other teams had an active COVID outbreak on their team which meant that playing in a game could have given it to the other team's players.  This was isolated to a practice squad QB and the other QB's screwed themselves over by not wearing a mask and/or tracking devices for periods of time and then tried not to cooperate with the investigation by the NFL about it. The other players were put on the COVID list NOT because they were positive but because they were in lose contact with someone who has it and were not properly protected.  Therefore, out of an abundance of caution they had to be placed on the COVID list.

They have nobody to be pissed off or mad at except themselves for being morons.

This team needs to play significantly better just to make the playoffs given the upcoming schedule. SF is one game out of .500 and a playoff spot and will be extra motivated on MNF even in a possible neutral site.

But any talk of SB or actually winning a playoff game is a pipe dream at best because the Bills aren't close to the same class as the 3 other division leaders and have already lost decisively against two of them with the Steelers on deck in a few weeks.

Doesn't matter what happened earlier in the year against those teams, all that matters is how they are playing when the playoffs get here. Once again, the NFL is a week to week league. What happened last week doesn't matter to this week's game and certainly not what happened 8 or 9 games ago.

  19. 1 hour ago, Shaw66 said:

The Bills beat the Chargers on Sunday, 27-17, improving to 8-3 and staying a game ahead of the Dolphins and three games ahead of the Patriots.  After a promising start to the game, the Bills finished ugly.  For many fans, the operative word is ‘ugly.”  For the Bills, the operative word is “finished.”

With a 24-6 lead, the Bills had an opportunity to coast to an unusual easy victory.  Instead, in a scene familiar to Bills fans this season, the Bills gave up a touchdown, went four and out and then turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions.  Throw in a series of bad penalties and the second successful hail Mary in two games, and the game turned ugly and uncomfortably close.  Forget that, or at least don’t obsess over it.

The Bills are a Sean McDermott team, and Sean McDermott teams finish.  He builds his teams to finish.  He trains them to finish.  He expects them to finish.  Against the Chargers, the Bills finished.  They closed the game with an interception by Tre’Davious White, a short drive (including a couple of penalties), a clutch Bass field goal, and excellent bend-don’t-break prevent defense (including the 4th and 27 hail Mary short of the end zone).  On the final play of the game, the Bills stuffed a quarterback sneak, beating the spread.  The Bills finished.

The Chargers are one of the better 3-8 teams you’ll see.  Justin Herbert has been having a lights-our rookie season at quarterback, and they have a credible defense.   Against the Bills, both were no-go, more or less.  The Bills harrassed and confused Herbert all game, and the Bills defensive backfield offered him few big throwing windows.  Many of Herbert’s completions were close or contested catches.  He finished the game with a passer rating of 76.  In other words, the Bills pretty much stopped him.  And by the way, the Chargers have a decent run game, but the Bills stuffed that, too.

The Charger defense did okay trying to stop the Bills, but there simply was no way they could hold the Bills under 20.  The Bills attacked relentlessly with their running game, and in the second half they began having more success.  Singletary and Moss shared the load, each taking advantage of occasional seams to move the chains.

Allen was efficient, when he wasn’t playing like a rookie.  He mishandled a snap and lost the fumble, he made a foolish desperation throw under pressure for an interception, and he avoided near-disaster on a couple of other low-reward high-risk plays.   He hasn’t learned that sometimes the right play is to take your lumps, even if it means you’ll punt.   Unless you’re in the final minute, there’s always another play.  Still, Allen was in control, made several good throws and managed the game.

    A few observations:

    1.  The Bills need to play under control.  Poyer’s unnecessary roughness, Oliver’s roughing the passer, Allen’s unsportsmanlike conduct all hurt the team.  There’s a difference between playing with an attitude and playing stupid.  One of the problems with playing stupid is that the team develops a reputation with the officials.  When the officials think your style is chippy, in-your-face, over-the-edge, you get calls like the taunting call on Moss – an obviously bad call except for the fact that Bills had spent the previous 20 minutes showing off their poor sportsmanship.  It’s been aing problem with Poyer all season, and now he seems to be infect other players.  The Bills need the officials to be on their side and not looking for flags to throw against them.

    2.  Stephon Diggs didn’t exactly light up the stat sheet, but that’s because they don’t keep stats about penalties drawn.  The first-half pass interference that set up the Bills’ first touchdown was created by Diggs and Allen’s arm.  Every bit as good as a completion.  Through the second half, Diggs’s deep threat left him available to Allen repeatedly for easy five- to seven-yard gains.

    3.  Tremaine Edmunds continues to makes plays.  He’s tackling more solidly, he’s getting off blocks, and he’s beginning to regain his form as an elite pass defender.  He’s in on a lot of plays, and he’s around even more. He looks a lot better than six weeks ago.

    4.  AJ Klein, too.

    5.  I watched the game with my adult daughter, a good athlete but she’s never watched much football.  She’s a Bills fan, but she probably can name only two Bills players other than Allen.  When Lee Smith caught that three-yarder, she said “Who’s that?  Do the Bills actually give that guy the ball?”  Even my daughter could see that Smith is about as unlikely a tight end as you’ll see in the 2020 NFL.

    6.  Seems to me the Bills would have done better to pay a little attention to Joey Bosa.

    7.  Allen should have left the pocket more often.  He got in trouble and sacked on a couple of occasions when he should have sensed that it was time to go.

For many years during the drought, Bills fans asked that their team just play one meaningful game in December.  Bills fans lived to see the Bills name and logo listed under “In the Hunt” when networks showed the playoff possibilities.  We knew it was a matter of days or a week or two before the Bills fell off the list, but expectations were low.  Just be in the hunt a week or two in December.

Now, the Bills are looking at five meaningful games in December and January.

The Bills are building for the playoffs.  You can see it in the defensive backfield.  Hyde, Poyer, White, and Wallace are getting stingier by the week.  Edmunds and Taron Johnson are part of it.  You can see it in the run defense - not dominant, but week after week the Bills seem to be plugging the leaks.  You can see it in the defensive aggressiveness and disguises.  The defense is getting tougher to handle.

The run game is becoming more productive.  Allen’s in control, except when he isn’t.

The special teams are excellent, except when Bojorquez isn’t.

This is the time Bills fans asked for: Meaningful games in December.  We have a lot be thankful for.

    GO BILLS!!!

The Rockpile Review is written to share the passion we have for the Buffalo Bills. That passion was born in the Rockpile; its parents were everyday people of western New York who translated their dedication to a full day’s hard work and simple pleasures into love for a pro football team.

What I found interesting is for as "ugly" a game it was or as "flat" as the Bills came out as I saw some others put it, the 18 point deficit the Chargers faced at 24-6 was the largest deficit all year for them, which has included games against the Chiefs and Buccaneers(the good Bucs before Brady started sucking).

Just shows the Bills even when they aren't playing all that good can build some pretty impressive leads...did the same thing to the Cards before the bye at 23-9 before ultimately losing on the hail mary play.

  21. The Williams play was on 4th and 17 if I recall but they got a penalty to make it 4th and 27...I was surprised they didn't look at it also especially because it was within the last 2 minutes and it would have had to come from the booth. If they look at it and decide Williams doesn't make that catch the Bills then decline the penalty and game over.

As it is the next play I believe on 4th and 27 was that Hail Mary that was caught...this time with 5!!!! Bills players there...this is seriously starting to become a trend we need to get rid of.
