Geno Smith vs Matt Barkley last 2yrs
KOKBILLS replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think you hit the nail right on the head with the bolded statement...And that's why I've been saying for some time, IF Geno is there at #8...The Bills almost have to take him...This Franchise is in a situation that, embarrassingly so, is unique in comparison to almost any other NFL team...They have virtually nothing at the QB position, and they have not Drafted a QB since 2007 (yes I'm still not counting Levi Brown)...They have next-to-nothing at the top or bottom of the depth chart...So how can they pass on taking the #1 rated QB in this Draft?...I could see some other teams with poor starters, but a young guy behind them passing on a QB early...But the Bills almost cannot afford to pass...The situation is dire, and that's an understatement...The value of Geno Smith to the Buffalo Bills would be almost invaluable...It would give them a little depth a QB, and more than anything it would give us hope... -
How right you are Sir!!!

I'm a little biased because I like Geno... But I think the Bills are in a VERY unique position in this Draft compared to almost any other team...Not only do they have a piss poor starter, but they are a Franchise that has ignored the QB position in the Draft since Trent Edwards in 2007 (Yes, I'm not counting Levi Brown at #209 overall)...So the Bills not only have poor starting talent, they have no developmental young depth either... I think due to those facts, if the Bills have an opportunity to take the guy who some Scouts feel is clearly the #1 QB in the 2013 Draft, they have to take him... Geno has huge upside...He's a thrower 1st, but he has unique athletic ability for a QB...He's got all the tools you want in an NFL QB...He loves football and is a real hard worker...Despite his well documented struggles at times, he put up crazy good numbers...You simply cannot ignore some of his numbers, especially the 71.2% completions as a Sr...If Maronne and Hackett are as good as we all hope they are, I have no doubt they can turn Geno into a decent NFL QB... As far as Drafted QB's go I agree 100% with Eli Manning when he basically said the situation you enter into (what team, the coaches, the talent around you) is the key component to success or failure in the NFL long-term...So I also realize all to well that based on this Franchises recent history, Geno is at risk to be a bust in Buffalo...It could happen no question...Some Scouts do worry that Geno hangs his head a bit too much when things are going bad...But at this point of Bills history, I think the potential rewards far outweigh the risks... I just don't see how The Bills could pass Geno at #8...But this is a Buddy Nix run Football operation...So...We'll see...

OK fair enough...Dalton is not a Top 10 QB...At least not yet...Maybe he'll never be one...But even middle of the pack is better than Fitz...Had Buddy used that pick on Dalton instead of Williams the Bills would clearly be in a better position at QB...Dalton is still young, and I'm sure Cincy believes he will continue to improve...I think for the sake of the argument on this thread, and at this point of time knowing the Bills have one of the worst QB depth charts in the entire NFL, Dalton can certainly be used as an example of Nix poor Drafting...But we'll see how it plays out over the next couple of years...Maybe Dalton slides and Aaron Williams finds a clue...Only time will tell... -

We'll see... But IMHO that is yet another HUGE knock on Nix who, by not trying to upgrade the QB position 2 Drafts in a row, left the team in this one year desperation... -

Revisionist history? Look...Maybe some folks don't follow College Football, or the NFL Draft like I do...But I don't need to prove anything to you via link or anything else...This is like taking candy from a baby... Wilson and Kaepernick were far from afterthoughts both here, and anywhere for that matter...Do you not have the NFL Network? Seriously because that would explain a lot... I lived in NC for 20 years...From the time Russell Wilson was a Freshman QB I saw an absolute ton of his Games on the tube, and I saw him in person several times at NC St...That was before what he did at Wisconsin which, by the way, was absolutely amazing...Kaepernick, as I said before, set NCAA records in College...He is the only QB in the history of Div I FBS to throw for over 10,000 yards and run for over 4,000 yards in his College career...1st player EVER...He was on the watch list for the Manning, O'Brien, Walter Camp, Maxwell, Hornung, and Unitas awards...Every Draftnick and their Mother knew about Kaep...The only question was whether or not The Pistol Offense, and the fact that he played in the WAC, were the main catalysts for his amazing numbers...Turns out it was mostly Colin...If you are not familiar with what Kaepernick, or Wilson did in their College years, that's cool...But no offense, it's really not worth arguing anything with you...You just don't know... The bottom line is this...There is absolutely no comparison between Kaepernick, Wilson, and Scott coming out beyond the fact that they play the same position...As to what people said around here before the Draft, who cares? You compared Scott's one-game tape with Kaep and Wilson who are two of the best QB's in the history of College Football...You should do more research before you make a statement like that...And it's that statement (mainly) that I was responding to... Now...That does not mean you're wrong about Scott turning into a good NFL QB...Anything is possible...I'm just pointing out that Scott is no where near the prospect in Scouts eyes that Kaep, or Wilson was...For very, very, very good reasons that took place on the football field in College...That's all...
-
A sleeper is one thing...Using a 2nd Round Pick on a Scott is clearly another...Kaepernick was not a sleeper whatsoever...Neither was Wilson...You had guys like Charles Davis on the NFL Network saying Kaepernick was going to be better than Cam Newton in 3 years...Wilson was only a 3rd Round pick due to his height...His College Resume was incredible...There are some analytics folks who had Wilson as the most NFL ready QB they ever graded... I mean...Are you just trolling?...You're not sure if Kaepernick or Wilson had a better College tape than Scott? You cannot be serious with that comment??? Have you heard of Kaepernick or Wilson before today?... I can't believe what I just read...

Wow! Seriously? Scott is 3 inches shorter than Kaepernick...Kaepernick has a better arm, and is a MUCH better athlete over all... Of course Kaepernick is a much better athlete than most QB's...And Pistol Offense or not, Keapernick set records at Nevada...I'm not saying Scott does not have some positive attributes...But Kaepernick-type vibe? No way...

I'm not a huge Dalton guy...But he's better than Fitz...Maybe not significantly...But still better...And he's bigger, younger, and more athletic...He's a much better scrambler, and better at keeping a pass play alive...He's had 10 less INT's than Fitz in 2 years, almost identical TD's over that period...Also, Fitz fumbled almost twice as much as Dalton over the past 2 years...And lets not forget Dalton is only going into his 3rd Season...He can still get better...Fitz is what he is... Anyway... -
I think with a little more seasoning Hairston could be considerably better, and more well rounded, than Pears...I'm interested in seeing what Maronne can get out of Hairston, who I think still has decent upside...I really believe Hairston could be at least a Top 15 RT in the NFL...He's still young...And he's a big dude... I could be 100% wrong...We'll see...

So you see the Drafting of Spiller, with 2 Pro-Bowl caliber (and NFL Top 100) RB's currently on the Roster, as an undersold move? And it's nothing against Spiller who is clearly a dynamic RB...Are The Bills better off with Spiller and Jackson than they would be with Lynch, Jackson, and say...Anthony Davis, Earl Thomas, or JPP??? Set up for a very successful future? Maybe...But that is a massive leap of faith...Not one I could even imagine taking... -

Just wondering... I find Gleason's take to be a bit too forgiving of the past 3 years...Lets face it...Buddy's record is not too flattering...It's been hashed out around here ad nauseam, but I feel the evidence is pretty overwhelming... So when Gleason says : "It comes down to priorities, not needs. Quarterback is their biggest need, but it doesn't mean it’s their top priority. If Nix makes the right moves, he can satisfy both and walk away satisfied that the Bills were in better shape when he left than when he arrived." Forgive me if I'm not buying that take whatsoever... Better shape than when he arrived? OK...1st of all, not a big accomplishment...2nd of all, if that can be argued at all I think it's it's proof positive Nix was pretty much a failure...We might be in better shape than terrible? OK...Great job Buddy! Walk away satisfied... 15 Draft Picks on Defense only to field 3 of the 5 worst Defenses in team history...The hiring of Gailey which led to the hiring of both Edwards and Wanny...The backing of Fitzpatrick that led to ignoring not just good, but potentially great young QB's in the Draft...One 7th Round QB Drafted in 3 years while your starting QB leads the entire NFL in turnovers during that period...Valuing Aaron Williams as a bigger need than Dalton and Kaepernick...Valuing TJ Graham as a 3rd Round talent to begin with, then also valuing him as a bigger need than Russell Wilson...I could go on and on... So...to me at least...unless Nix hits a grand slam Home Run with this QB selection in 2013, how in the world could this guy ever feel satisfied about how he left this team?...Going into the 2013 season, no matter what the Bills do in this Draft, they are going to be one of the favorites to land the 1st pick in 2014...Now granted the actual outcome in 2014 will be the final test...But still...If Nix leaves after the Draft in April, he's going to leave behind as many questions as he took-on coming in... I'm not saying Buddy's tenure is doomed to be viewed as a complete failure just yet...He still gets to step up to the plate one more time in April and swing for the fences...But I am saying that the mistakes along the way over these past 3 years will forever leave the shoulda, coulda, and woulda's out there...And I really don't know how that could ever be satisfying for anyone tied to The Bills...Buddy, or the fans...
-
They gave up an absolute ton of rushing yards...Dead last in the NFL in 2010...Williams was a big part of that...
-
Good question...The Jets replaced Jenkins with Po'uha...He's a 325 lb plug guy...Not a pass rusher but stout enough vs the run and strong...He's a role player for sure...I think you have to have a guy that can anchor well vs. the double team...And I don't see KW or Dareus filling that role...Not KW because he's too small...And not Dareus because, at least I believe, he does not like that role...

Moats is a decent depth guy because he can back-up more than one position...But that's about it...I don't see him as being all that great at anything...I'd say his chances of making this team in 2013 are about 50/50...I say that because I expect The Bills to bring in quite a bit of bodies to compete at LB...I do think he's an awesome dude though...Really good person... -
I even hate myself when I cherry pick one point from a well thought out post...But KW is not a 3-4 NT...Not saying the Bills wont try (and fail when they do) to play him there...But he's not a good option...This has pretty much been proven, with terrible results, when they went 3-4 last time... Similarly...Dareus, IMHO is FAR better suited to be a 315-320 lb 3-4 DE than he is a 345 lb 3-4 DT...I've heard Dareus comment before, on more than one occasion, that basically he needs to be bigger to play NT...That (again IMHO) is the worst possible message for the future of Marcell Dareus in the NFL...He has to play at around 320-325 to be consistently effective (he was 318 at his Combine where he showed his incredible athleticism). And I don't think he's an effective NT anyway...I watch Dareus a lot...I mean a ton during games...And I've went back on many occasions and watched him again...When he gets doubled he completely disappears. I'm not going to say it's an effort thing because I'm not going to point that finger...But he stands straight up (looking to bat the pass down if it's a pass play) and he's done for that play...When he gets singled up on a Guard or Center he does much better, usually gets decent penetration, and he seems to even hustle more...I just have this belief that you have to put Dareus where he will be double-teamed the least...And that's NOT at NT in a 3-4... So anyway...Moral of this story is...Unless Troup has been touched by the hand of God and comes back 100% healthy...The Bills literally have no one at NT for a 3-4 Defense...At least that's how I see it...
