  1. I'm a UNIX Administrator (aka: computer geek). My wife manages a drug and alcohol treatment place. And the biggest thing: We have no kids. The setup really didn't cost as much as you might think. The electronics cost me roughly $6,800. Considering I've been saving for this for 6 years, that's only a little over $1k/year! While not cheap, I definately think it's worth it. CW
  2. But he did well running it against the prevent Bucs D.
  3. Most (all?) 16x9 TVs over here have a "stretch" feature, which basically makes the 4:3 picture use all of a 16:9 display. That's probably what you're seeing. The TVs here have the ability to turn that off (and you should always do that -- watch the OAR -- Original Aspect Ratio). And football in HD (or even just 16:9) is awesome -- you can see the punter AND the punt returner on the screen at the same time. Bliss. When we were in London for our honeymoon, we noticed that the TV there had a cool feature where you could pull up news, sports scores, etc, in text on the screen. Sort of like a mini-internet. That was pretty cool (and the only way I could find out the scores of the Bills games). Not sure what it was called though; is that a standard feature over there? CW
  4. Everything here is broadcast in 4:3, unless it's HD. No idea why though... That's a history lesson for Google to solve at some point. As for how HD is different than digital -- digital and analog are simply two delivery mechanisms, just like "cell phone vs walkie talkie." We've had sattelite here for years as well as digital cable (vs analog cable). The difference with HD is that the picture has a lot more information -- even higher picture quality than a DVD -- as does the audio. Think of VHS vs Laserdisk. Both are (technically) analog, but Laserdisk has a much better picture quality. CW
  5. EFF (Electronic Freedom Foundation) uses them all the time -- although the form you fill out actually gets sent to congressmen, senators, etc. I get lots of mail from government officials now because of joining the EFF. http://www.eff.org It all depends on what happens when you sign the form; if it's just a petition, nothing will probably happen. CW
  6. That's why I ended up having to watch the Bills/Bucs game on my 32" TV instead of my new HT room; the picture looked like crap on the projector Now THIS week on the other hand... Have I mentioned that I can't wait?! http://www.stadiumwall.com/index.php?showtopic=30501&st=60 CW
  7. Except in MY post, I said, "Bashers start threads," and in YOUR post, you said, "Point me in the direction." Whatever. I'll go back to lurk mode. CW
  8. Please point me in the directionof the post where I said you specifically started the subject. I said, "Drew bashers," not, "MDH." CW
  9. My only question then is why do the bashers start threads about DB everytime he does something wrong? Notice that these DB threads are NOT started by the "DB appologists," as the bashers like to say. They're starrted by people saying, "Look, DB fumbled the snap," and "Look, it's the same old Drew!" And then the "appologists" get criticized for beating a dead horse. If JP vs DB doesn't matter, then please stop making threads about it! CW
  10. Nowhere have they advertised all games in HD. All games that are BROADCAST in HD are available. Blame CBS for only recording three games a week in HD. CW
  11. So in a thread about JP, you talk about Drew but we're not supposed to think you're comparing the two at all. Uh huh... CW
  12. I did both. (OO and structures) And we used C++ for OO. Who taught the ADA class? I never did take the compiler class in Minnesota. Probably should've, oh well. I did take some assembly which was pretty cool. CW
  13. Any "real" college will teach data structures, and not just a language... They may use Java as a tool to teach structures, but they shouldn't just teach the language. That's one reason I left Fredonia to go to the U of Minnesota. CW
  14. Which is twice as many fieldgoals as Losman got us last week... And we didn't even get the couple of beautiful passes... That said, I don't expect him to look anywhere near as bad this week. Hopefully it's not just hopeless optimism... CW
  15. You could've gotten it for free if you would've read the Consumer Forums... (assuming you didn't just sign up for the Ticket this week). CW
  16. I think you must've been working with the wrong techies... Or I've been working with the good ones. Where I work, we all share knowledge pretty freely (well, with my previous coworkers anyway; too soon to tell with the two new ones...). Then again, I've pretty much always been the senior guy and I'm definately of the mindset that I don't want to be a single point of failure (aka: single point of contact at 3am). Maybe I'm the one who's in the minority...? *shrug* Anyway, I think I'm up there on the computer chart as well, but there's no such thing as "computer master." Everyone has their own disiplines. I know Solaris, HP-UX, OpenBSD very well, but my C is slipping quite a bit (lack of use). The most important thing to know in IT (IMHO) is how to find the information you need, not necessarily knowing how to do everything off the top of your head. CW
  17. Cool, thanks! CW
  18. Hopefully someone will post video online sometime. Sounds cool. In other news: It's raining in Minnesota. And I still can't watch Lost because of it. EDIT: Because the news people are talking about the storm, not because of DirecTV. CW
  19. Awww, her loss. They're freaky the first few times, but after you realize that chances are you're not going to die, they're really pretty cool. Hopefully someone *hint hint* is recording it... (or maybe ABC will replay it at some odd hour of the night). CW
  20. Shut up. All I see is a talking head saying, "It's raining very hard out. Get to the basement because there's reported tornados. Be careful of the 3" hail." Like I couldn't figure that out by looking out the window! How's Jen enjoying her first Minnesota storm? They're nothing like the storms in WNY. CW
  21. Someone want to record Lost for me tonight...? We're having a MAJOR storm (near-hurricane force winds - 70mph - in Minnesota?! 3" hail?! Gimme a break!), and all of the networks are talking about it so they're interrupting shows They might put the shows on later, not sure, but I don't want to miss the season premier! I'd be forever grateful CW PS: My sattelite signal is still chugging along, even with the crappy weather
  22. The officials actually are NOT covered by the school's insurance for the most part. You need to take out your own insurance if you're worried. Also, the rulebook doesn't just say "wear shoes anywhere on your body." It's fairly descriptive. The coaches should've had the waiver with them if they wanted him to play. Yes, the officials are probably just covering their butts, but keep in mind that they make $30/game. I know, I used to do it. CW
  23. We're not talking about insurance or liability, we're talking about the court of public opinion. Yes, if this kid got seriously injured, you can bet people would be second guessing the officials (and the coaches). CW
  24. That's an indoor antenna though, and my theater is in the basement... I doubt the Silver Sensor would work there CW
  25. Drew's only been cut once, and that was by us. CW
