Wentz came out of more of a pro-style offense and has started a huge amount. I think Cardale's "technical rawness" if I can create that phrase allied with his lack of experience in pro-style offenses and just in game play generally are what explains the difference between Wentz (2nd overall) and Jones (last pick of the 4th round). I think he is a project, he is two year away at least and we shouldn't let his performance against non-NFL level talent (as encouraging as it was) on Saturday kid us into believing he will be ready sooner.

I understand the "lack of experience in a pro-style offense" concern, but Wentz was operating his pro-style offense against a bunch of guys who will never even be invited to an NFL training camp. Jones, on the other hand, played the best games of his career against defenses that were loaded with NFL-caliber talent, playing for the highest possible stakes. So is Cardale really more "raw" than the guy who went number 2 overall and, at least until his injury, was probably going to be the Eagles starting QB this year? I understand the concern about how he performed this year at OSU, but it was far from an unmitigated disaster--he didn't lose a game. For some reason, that program was just in a massive funk last year. Probably a national championship hangover.

I have not attended a minute of camp but - From what i can tell - salas and little are very similar. Big dudes but they don't offer a ton. They're available for a reason. But reliability is pretty good - I'd rather have guys out there who can catch vs. otherwise. But do you need 2 more of them? People already complain that Woods is just a guy. Now we'd go 3 deep with receivers who are just guys.

Powell seems to offer some teams ability - at least returning. Had a good preseason game too - i know Rex appreciates guys who show up for games.

I know nothing about dez lewis, but i can't imagine we're keeping him and listenbee.

Easley isn't healthy - and is primarily teams. We added anderson/blanton for that. So i don't see him making it. But maybe he'll start the year on PUP, with possibly listenbee.

My only thing is: I haven't been at camp. I can't make a knowledgeable decision based on 10 snaps in a preseason game. He's 3rd on the depth chart right now, so i imagine he's having a good camp. But his injury history is something that makes you think twice about relying on him for a full season. Nobody else on that list besides the top 2 has earned a thing - so they need to beat him out for the job. Apparently they are failing.

It's hard to argue with anything you've said here. Unfortunately, it's not possible for these well-reasoned takes to gain traction against one of the most relentless and inexplicable crusades that this board has seen in quite some time.

  3. His experience in a pro style and his accuracy. He makes some mind numbing throws (and can be wild high). He has a ton of confidence in his arm which sometimes leads to bad decisions. He hasn't had to go through progressions and get by with his mind. He's always fallen back on his immense physical talent. Urban's system is quite different from what you see in the NFL.

I believe in Cardale. I believe that he has a chance to be really good but we saw good Cardale the other night. If developed properly he has a chance to be more consistent. He's a guy (to date anyways) that has had good and bad. His peaks and valleys are higher (and lower) than many others. The trick will be to maximize the peaks and minimize the valleys.

Yolo, do you agree? Care to add anything else?

Do you think he's more "raw" than Wentz? Aren't almost all rookie QBs raw, to some degree?
  4. He does all of those things that you suggest well. He stands tall and is comfortable in the pocket. Cardale is 2 years away IMO but he has good instincts. He's a gamer.

For those questioning his draft status, if he came out a year earlier he probably would have been a top 10 pick. No one questions his talent. He is just raw (really raw). He isn't very consistent which is why he fell to the 3rd. He's not a 3rd round talent though. He has an extremely high ceiling and an extremely low floor. He was a risk to go early but it's not like Nassib (for example) that didn't have the tools.

I know you have watched a lot of Cardale, but why do you refer to him as "raw (really raw)"? (You're not the only one, of course.). Do you think he is more raw than Carson Wentz, who went number 2 overall? I don't. I think Cardale certainly needs work, but I think his "rawness" has been drastically oversold. IMO, his intangibles plus his outstanding physical tools make up for his relative lack of experience. He will be ready much sooner than many think.
  5. He was exciting, but I`m not ready to crown him. Unlike a few others.

No one is crowning him. But since the day Cardale was drafted, we have been told how "raw" he is, as if he were from a 1-AA school, or played TE in college, or hadn't won a freaking National Championship. Well, he did not look raw last night, playing behind the Bills 2d and 3d team line and throwing the ball to guys who will soon be unemployed. He looked considerably more confident, poised and athletic than the 4th year QB he supposedly will be backing up this year.
  6. Cardale looked very good. He looks comfortable in the pocket and his throws were strong and accurate. Would love to see him throw to Glass and Sammy. Although his mobility was a strength at OSU, Cardale looks like he's lost some weight and seems quicker. Very impressive debut.

Despite all the justifiable angst regarding the injuries to Shaq and RR, Cardale's development might end up being a much more important development for the franchise.

 Goodwin is a much better football player than Graham ever was. This is a silly comparison, like I said it's lazy and easy and inaccurate.

Surviving training camp and all the preseason games is all they can go on. If the WR room had more talent, if he were more of a bubble player, then it'd certainly be a more interesting debate. But the guy has proven to be able to beat the press and use his speed as more than a gimmick.

He just hasn't been able to stay healthy. If he can stay healthy, he's the 3rd best WR on the team and it's not even close. You don't cut your 3rd best WR just because he might get hurt unless you have someone nipping at his heels on the depth chart. The Bills don't seem to have that guy.

You're absolutely right, but you're also wasting your time. For some reason, there is just an incredible amount of irrational hatred for Goodwin on this board; you would think he played for the Patriots. And anyone who seriously argues that Goodwin when healthy is no better than Graham is not worth arguing with. As I recall, someone else argued that Graham was actually faster than Goodwin despite clear and undisputable evidence to the contrary.

  8. No I mean where they traded him for a first to the colts after realizing he was terrible. If you recall reaction to that trade was that the Colts had fleeced the Browns.

Now that I can agree with. I recall one poster who actually said that the trade was so one-sided in the Colts favor that it threatened the competitive balance of the league. Others at the time saw the trade for the highway robbery (by the Browns) that it was.

  9. Didn't they recently decline to pick up the fifth year option on Fisher, or am I misremembering? Obviously, KC sees something in the guy that some others don't. He's been on their team for three seasons so they should know better than anyone what the guy's upside is. If this were another team throwing this kind of $ at him it would be more suspect, IMO.

  10. Seems that you like changing the subject with multiple people.

The title of the thread is "don't expect Rex or Whaley" so I'm talking about both.

There is a lot that goes into the success or failure of a team. If the GM does not get the right players for the coaches offensive and defensive scheme, then it is not going to work. Same goes with head coaches that constantly change coordinators and schemes as there is always a learning curve during the course of the season. How many years have the Bills changed defenses between Marrone and Gailey? While I wished Schwartz was either retained as DC and Roman was hired as the HC or Schwartz was promoted to HC and Roman was brought in as the OC, it didn't happen. The Bills are not going to get much better if they keep changing coordinators and Head Coaches every couple of years.

As far as the other short term HC's that got fired. With hiring coordinators as first time HC's, it's a crap shoot as that coach had no previous NFL head coaching experience, so no one knows how they are going to do.

I'm hardly changing the subject. What about Rex's six years in NY makes you think he deserves a longer leash than a first time HQ? If anything, Rex has earned a shorter leash.
  11. To your first point, I don't know if it was unwise, with a QB that never started a game, to want to build a ball control offense. Even still, the Bills led the league in big plays last year (run plays over 10 yards, pass plays over 20). Not exactly conservative all the time.

He simplified the defense after the bye and it improved a lot over the first 8 games. Still a work in progress, I grant you, but it was trending in an upward arc.

I don't understand what you mean by "doesn't have an offense with a passing game versatile enough to give his team a chance when his defense fails in a league that's set up for his defense to fail." As to the passing game versatility, I think, again, Roman was choosing to bring TT along slowly earlier on. By the last 6 games or so, we were seeing TT exploit the middle of the field much more often and he and Sammy were simply giving opposing teams fits as a result. And that was without a viable option on the other side in the form of an injured Woods and nobody to stretch the field and occupy safeties.

I appreciate that he screwed the pooch by switching to a 34 and making Mario and Hughes plays out of a 2-point stance much of the time as that undoubtedly made them less effective pass rushers. But Hughes did very well after the bye and we'll never know how much better we would have been if Mario hadn't quit. People who hate Rex pooh pooh that aspect, but not having Mario, who has all the tools to play and excel in the 34, hurt that defense a lot.

Your point about the confusion with play calls is a fair one. We all saw it. And, ultimately it's on Rex for not being able to get his defensive QBs to adapt fast enough. Brown was confused a lot of the time. But I'm willing to chalk that up to a player trying to come to grips with a new and complex system. I'd be surprised if that problem continues now that we've had a full year in the system.

    GO BILLS!!!

Don't you think Mario quitting is in large part on Rex? As HC, isn't it his job to motivate his players and see that they give their all, week in and week out, and if they don't, replace them? Mario didn't quit on Marrone, did he? I don't understand why Rex gets a pass for that.
  12.

It's one thing to safely presume Whaley didn't want to "upset the applecart" on defense...it's quite another to believe he (or anyone) would have predicted Rex's system would not be [applicable to] / [take longer to learn for] the talented players on the roster, or that Mario would become a petulant child (undermining the process).

Actually, at about this time last year a poster predicted that the players would not adapt well to Rex's defensive system, that the system would be crammed down their throats, and that the defense would likely take a significant step backward in 2015. He also predicted that the offense would improve. You attacked him mercilessly.
