With this draft as it currently stands, we clearly need defense (I'm late to this draft party--not sure why we used a pick on a kicker rather than drafting some defense--get the kicker via FA or UDFA and save a precious pick for some defense--BPA). That said, as the board stands, I trust the Honorable Doug E. Fresh Whaley to determine who is the better fit, a medically cleared Antonio Morrison (hoping OBD improved our doctors!) or James Burgess. Don't see how anyone could put a negative spin on this. In a year in which we didn't have a 1st rd pick, Whaley drafts a guy in the 2nd round who performs like a top 10 pick in the 1st round.

Agree with you 100%--have to give the FO credit--they're limited with what they can do in regard to player moves this offseason so they're doing the next best thing, brining in coaches who can support the scheme and who I believe the players will respect and will want to play for. Personnel moves in "lesser" coaching spots aren't sexy moves but they're part of building a winning foundation. I thought the offseason would be dull--looks like we might have a little fun (and at least some fodder for debate).

You guys are all missing the point about the McCoy trade, he was traded because Chip Kelly is a racist! It had nothing to do with anything else (scheme fit, contract, etc...). And the really brilliant aspect of the trade was that Doug Whaley had the last laugh because he traded Chip a Latino (Chip must not have known about Kiko's heritage when they were together at Oregon).

We handled one of the elite teams in the league with one of the top two or three QBs in the league without Dareus. I know we have lots of other pieces in place on the defensive side of the house, yada, yada, yada but that is pretty friggin' impressive (even for the most critical person out there--"it's a nice sign to see us hold the Colts and Andrew Luck in check without an important piece of the defensive line on the field"). As we all knew when he was named starter, we're gonna go as far as Tyrod can handle taking us. Today was a good start. Let's enjoy it!

My memory of Jeff Tuel will be watching him come in to replace EJ in the Browns game. His performance that night was so awful that I was sincerely embarrassed for the guy--I really felt sorry for him. He just couldn't do anything right. He was clearly out of his league--I was literally cringing. If it was a boxing match and I was in his corner, I'd have thrown in the towel. Not sure if it was him, Hackett, Marrone or all of the above. Wish him luck...

I was so bored last night I actually watched some of the veteran combine replay on the NFL network. The fact that they were higher on Mike Kafka than most of the QBs in the draft speaks volumes about the dearth of talent available.

He's coming off a four year $36 million deal with $24.9 guaranteed. I read in a few places he will get between $6 million and $8 million per year and perhaps a contract close to what Dansby got last year four years for $24 million with $12 million guaranteed. Dansby was 33 and Harris is 31. Not sure if we get him as cheaply as people want and for a short term ($3 or $4 million for one year would be a steal if what I hear is accurate). As "Aristocrat" noted above, Harris coming off a solid season too, not on decline. 2014 stats: Recorded a team-high 124 tackles, including 73 solo. Also had six sacks, five tackles-for-loss and two forced fumbles. He played 99.4 percent of the defensive snaps. And he'll also have more than a few suitors. Rex can get him but it won't be on the cheap according to what I see out there.

Players love Rex, so I think it will be a better situation than it was in Philly with Chip.

Thank you Doug Whaley--last thing we needed was to give a 35 year old with a half season of production over a decade three years at $5 million per. Stand pat and hope EJ improves--if not, 2016 will provide better options for us. And to steal a baseball sabermetrics term, does anyone really think one of these FA's "WAR" (wins above replacement) is worth the investment of $$ or one of our top picks this year over EJ when we can use those assets on another position of need (OG, TE, RB). Get one of the available veteran back-ups (as if there is so much difference--there's a reason they're all available either via FA or trade) and accept the fact that we have to hope the new staff helps EJ progress more than the Marrone/Hackett dynamic duo! Sorry but it really sucks to be in the market for a starting QB this year!!!

Bradford hands down but we aren't getting him and neither will anyone else unless they pay a hefty ransom regardless of his injuries (speaks volumes when Mark Sanchez, let alone Josh McCown, is a hot commodity as a starting QB!). The QB market this year is like investing in energy stocks for the short term ... bad!

Happy to replace Marrone with Rex and I am truly excited about having a guy like Rex here. It should make things a lot more fun. While I can only imagine how much fun our D will have with Rex, our D wasn't the issue--with either Pettine or Schwartz--we all know that. We had other issues and does Rex bring anything to the table to solve those issues. Rex brings a lot of good to the table but he has plenty of deficiencies. I hope some of you who have more time than me and more knowledge (I only profess to be a fan not an expert) can put together an objective list of all of the issues with Rex over the past few years--e.g., hands off with offensive side of the ball, inability to develop a young QB--Sanchez or Geno, his horrible time and game management, etc... He was lucky to have Idzik as a fall guy but please don't forget that Rex is no longer coaching because of Rex too not merely due to Idzik. Hope a smarter, more astute fan with knowledge of the Tri-State scene will articulate in a much more erudite and cogent manner than I, the arguments against Rex and why those should concern us (please do not rely of speculation about how Whaley is going to somehow pull a franchisee QB out of a hat). Happy but concerned in NJ....

Great stuff, I always liked Mayock! As for Sammy, I will beat the dead horse--we have to ensure that we always have a QB around who can get him the ball (Orton & Sammy = Palmer & Larry Fitzgerald). I hope the Orton signing is an indication that Whaley and company will not let us regress at QB again. If we can keep Orton around for a couple of years we should be able to get ourselves a solid QB in FA to step in when Orton goes and we can draft a future QB in training. Dreaming is nice!
