  1. The waiting period is only necessary so that all background, including FBI and out of state background checks can be completed. If they can be completed sooner fine, but I also don't want a bureaucratic system dragging their feet on doing one, so a 7 day waiting period buys time and sets a deadline on both sides. That is my answer to the waiting period deal, because I could see a bureaucratic system taking longer because the checks had not been completed... So my deal is that this is both a waiting period and a bureaucratic deadline... Technology and system integration may make this mute in the future, but not every area is hooked up... Also, gun show loopholes should be eliminated and photos of all gun owners, like a driver's license should be required. I know, big brother is watching, but autos like guns can be negligently and purposely be used a dangerous weapons and should be licensed... Also a good way to raise user taxes...., just kidding.... I was being sarcastic, but agree that is a potential problem.
  2. Not true, but the city liberals do want to take away guns... There are many small town liberals and folks that go out to the country that feel strong about protecting the 2nd amendment. Myself included... My problem with the NRA is that they don't like the background check, waiting period etc... For libertarian types, I can understand this argument, but for those who have already committed a crime, a system has to be put in place so that access to guns is limited or made more difficult and a crime. That being said the NRA gun safety classes are world class and it would hurt if even these anti-gun liberals took one of these classes. At least they would know what the heck they were talking about. However, gun violence in the city is intolerable and accidental gun violence with the use of drugs and alcohol is ridiculous everywhere and penalties should be increased.
  3. Oh, there are easier ways to make money including moving to AK for those oil royalties or being the grandaughter of a bootlegger. Politicians don't make a lot of money, and most leave DC with a pension and a few benefits, but considering what they have to put up with, unless they steal like Stevens and what is his name from SoCal, they aren't getting rich. They do okay, but the hours suck, the amount of brown permanently stained on their noses never goes away and it takes at least 10 years off your life expectency... Ask Palin... she only ran for office.
  4. The Gun issue is going to be hard for NYCers to overcome. Rep. McCarthy is already on TV panning the appointment and threatening to find someone to run against her. Announcement will happen at 12pm.
  5. Here is a link to her office website: http://www.gillibrand.house.gov/ and the district map, although now it will be the entire state. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourre...amp;district=20
  6. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...EgrQZgD95SP4S80. Interesting, she is from upstate and has an NRA endorsement. Guaranteed to piss off NYC Dems... finally someone to compete with the sucking sound that is NYC.
  7. Hence why Hoyer is playing mediator... I wonder how long she will remain speaker?
  8. As I will vote against Cuomo... At least I can thank one Texan.
  9. I am not denying money gets you to the table. But it will should be a calculations of political philosophy, known quantity, and can or do they have the fire in the belly to keep going if that is what Patterson thinks is politically expedient.
  10. Useless political stunt: I wonder if his finances could stand up to the political scrutiny he is demanding of HRC... Doubt it. http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2009...intons-confirm/ Other examples of his stupidity: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=John_Cornyn Now, he is protesting Eric Holder... Not perfect, I admit... but I am sorry if the Republicans insist on being nasty and expressing themselves like petulant children, they will be in the minority for a long time... Even Dick Armey, former Majority Leader in the House is more intellectually honest while disagreeing with what needs to be done. What is killing Republicans most is that they appear to be nasty people. Interesting to see the Dems are using Steny Hoyer as their spokesperson and keeping Pelosi under wraps. Smart strategy, considering she comes across as just stupid and shrill as Cornyn.
  11. How is close to Patterson??? And what determines his thinking on this matter... I am not sure anyone really knows.
  12. They also had Robert Cray and Eric Clapton, don't remember who else. But tents were set up on the Mall and you could just walk in and hear these guys and many other bands playing. It was great.
  13. God I hope it isn't Cuomo... Andrew that is. What do folks think about Nita Lowey... Any others come to mind?
  14. Agreed, I can't believe Madoff isn't in jail. Wonder if he paid off the judges. Feds should investigate conflict of interest charges against these judges... I'm bettin they find some quid pro quo. Disgusting.
  15. Ship 'em to South America, maybe it will put a dent in the stolen car market.
  16. But she isn't... Bill on the other hand.... rumored he has a new G friend in Chappaqua, some married blonde?
  17. You are wrong about the Burgh and Baltimore.... Yes, they have a ways to go, but this money spent on the cities have brought them a long way from the depression of the Rust belt and urban blight in the 70s. If you had ever been through those cities before the development really got hold, you and he would know how much progress had been made... The chump who wrote this article took a slanted easy to personal anecdote rather than actually looking at the changes that had been made. Example, in Baltimore you could not have walked between the inner harbor to Fells point through little Italy in the 80s without getting mugged. We drove..., Now you can very safely. I had a friend live on Federal Hill in the early 90s where you could hear occasional gun fire, now it is much better and cleaned up. Yes, there are still problem areas, but the change has been remarkable... Also, Baltimore has become a booming Port City, I believe the 2nd largest on the East Coast. I don't know about Philli, haven't spent enough time to observe what changes have been make, so I can't comment, but given his misinterpretation about Baltimore and the Burgh, which by the way has been incredible in its downtown and across the river transformation from urban blight to an area that is nice to walk around in, business activity is doing okay.... despite the fact that like Buffalo, it subject to extreme post-industrial restructuring... Suffice to say, I wouldn't trust this guys facts with both hand and a flash light.
  18. Facts as Darin sees them, I see just opinion... No I haven't read the proposal and the jury is still out on Obama.... But to blindly attack him based on some mindless lemming repeating the liberal echo chamber is much even for you. The right wing echo chamber is just as bad, and both are mindless.... So what specifically do you have a problem with in his proposal and where did you see... in another words what source did you use to obtain it? Call me cynical, but I don't believe it unless it is posted somewhere by the man who wrote it... Not some piece of toilet paper taken from a transition team member with chicken scratch on it. That being said with all the borrowing we have done to pay for the stupid war in Iraq and give aways to the Defense Industrial complex and health insurance industry over the last 8 years, not to mention the exorbitant increase in bureaucracy under this soon to be former President, it is going take a little while to rein in all this spending while stimulating an economy put in the crapper brought by an Administration the let the crooks of the free market run amok. The SEC should be dissolved and taken over by the CFTC. Cut USDA personnel by 40,000 and the same with Commerce and start investigating Defense contracts to see if they actually delivered on what they said... I am sure HHS and Dept. of Ed. could use some and replace half the staff at interior, especially the AK staff and renegotiate all the royalties paid to the feds for mineral rights especially in AK.... Those would be could smaller government reductions. But the problem now is so many folks have lost jobs, doing this now would be nuts... So what are you going to do??? It is going to need time AD, so don't listen to the radio or the TV but think about what you are saying before you go off half-cocked.... Or maybe not, that is what makes this board fun and hey, I have been guilty of it more than a few times.
  19. No defense for this one, NY Senate Dems are idiots and should be ashamed of themselves.
  20. Looking like what, Maddow actually would be pretty if she grew her hair long.... the only good thing about taping the ice princess would be to hear her #$%@#$#. But there are laws against that. Makes me turn blue just thinking about it... wouldn't work. Maddow would probably be logical about it and if she has any male hormones in her than she has some dog in her and would work with what was there. P.S. If you didn't get, all men are dogs when it comes down to it...
  21. Nice try, once again the US government giving away mineral rights away to the underserved members of a territory. Oh that is right AK actually is a State.... Hmmm, wonder why we even bothered, when they insist on building bridges on additonal federal dollars while allowing meth labs to proliferate, yet the population claims it is about family values. Actually, I expect Palin to stick with her daughter and boyfriend.... That part I admire about her, but don't beat us libs up with the contrived family values crap when have religo nuts end up getting divorced or cheating on your spouses, or their children are having kids out of wed lock with a drug dealing father.... I know a lot more libs that are more committed to their relationships then the soccer mom bible thumpers, who divorce their spouses as soon as the economy goes bad. It is happening down her in droves to a lot of church going people. So, get off your high horse and stop sniffing those caribou droppings and you might actually be coherently present a justification for the dividend fund and what you are thinking.
  22. Don't know about the lack of contusions.... Not sure that I would believe anything in the press at this point. P.S. Have you ever seen Travolta in person. He is a big boy too. When I saw him, I was surprise how wide the man was and he isn't short either, but it would not surprise me that his son was that large, especially if he was on anti-seizure medicine. It does tend to make my son hungrier I have already noticed and he already had a good appetite. I am tall and thin, so is my oldest, this one is tall and chunky even at 2.
  23. The Farm Bureau must be on another recruitment drive. They have trotting this crap out for the last twenty years. It ain't going to happen, but they like repeating this "rural myth" Move along, it is a bunch of corporate conspiracy theory run amok to justify its existence.
  24. But anti-seizure medication is necessary and often needs to change when the body changes. It is a tough deal, my youngest just had two seizure over the holidays due to his neurological disorder and a trigger of bad sleep and long car trips. We are using only lite meds now as a result and hope that we can break the cycle as our neurologist at Columbia University hospital suggests. But once again, the seizure did not kill Travolta's son, hitting his head did. I just wonder where his monitor was at the time? They are still learning about these things and luckily for my son, but unlucky in the sense that they couldn't tell where the seizure was coming from, after 2.5 days in Columbia, they could not induce one. We hope he won't have another anytime soon... pretty scary.
  25. Agreed, Palin doesn't get it. She brought on herself, just as Kennedy's disasterous trail balloon campaign swing brought and recent press gaffs brought on similar criticism.... "I have to work twice as hard as others because of her background" Both women seem to have a lack of understanding of how both are perceived when they make these defensive statements. They sound less than gracious and any politician worth anything understands that you let you people complain for you, but you don't. It sounds ungrateful and arrogant when if you are going to serve it is is suppose to be about self sacrifice and desire to give something back to our democracy. A little self effacing humor goes a long way in these situations. You can express frustration with the process, but I don't see either taking responsibility for their own screw ups. Harry Reid is sounding the same way right now as well and I wonder if he will survive, especially if it is revealed that he lied on tapes about nixing the other African American politicians. One could take a lesson from Guilliani on how to handle the press when they are looking for red meat. Be inspecific about one's faults but acknowledge you have some and laugh at the fact that it goes with the territory and the press is just doing its jobs. As soon as you lose your sense of humor in politics and can't roll with the punches your career is over.
