Bills have meeting with Stanford LT Martin
Lurker replied to mob16151's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Coincidental timing I suspect. The visit was probably lined up weeks ago. A mediocre pro day is disapointing when were talking about a potential #10 pick. But if there's one thing Buddy has never equivocated on is that on-the-field production, significant starting experience and football smarts is what counts the most. Martin may still be the guy they've targeted. If so, the only concern I have is that he can handle the extra 30 pounds he's put on and not be a guy like Fina that struggled to maintain his strength/weight throughout his career. -
"Just based on things I've been hearing" Yeah, those 'GR callers are certainly a knowlegeable bunch...

Bills will visit with WVA OLB/DE Bruce Irvin also:

Any veteran sportswriter knows that what's being mocked today (late March) is nothing more than farts in the wind. So they put in minimal effort to fill a publishing deadline. Nothing more, nothing less. Warroom draft boards are still being finalized. Once we get into mid-April, the mocks will become more interesting, based on what writers are hearing from agents and team insiders. Even then, a lot of smoke will be blown up a lot of anuses...

Which is what every print and online publication will read like until the eve of the draft. There's a whole lot of smoke out there right now, just like every year... -

"He played in college at around 280 and had put on nearly 30 pounds and there is no telling if he’ll be able to maintain that elite level of athleticism." Yikes! I don't like guys who aren't natuarlly big and bulk up for the draft. We saw what a certain PSU LB did with that kind of transformation (sigh....). -

IMO, I do think Buddy wants an immediate difference maker with a top 10 pick. While Reiff and Bulaga are nice players, I wouldn't put them in that category (especially if they can only play RT). It's a tough call on the O-linemen this year. None of the guys available to the Bills seem worthy of the #10 pick, so to choose one would be diminishing a major tactical asset. Plul, this (hopefully) will be the last time they pick so high for some time to come, so we need to maximize our value... 32 1/2 Buzz about arm length: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/25/iowas-reiff-has-short-arms-for-a-left-tackle/ -

Too bad for Martin: As impressive as DeCastro was, former linemate Jonathan Martin was disappointing. Advertised as a top-notch athlete, the First Team All-Pac 12 left tackle was timed at 5.33 seconds in his first attempt at the 40-yard dash. Worse, this attempt was aided by the wind. Martin came in at 5.43 seconds, according to scouts, on his second attempt against the wind. Perhaps more alarming was that the 6-5, 307-pound Martin lifted the bar only 20 times during the bench press and wasn't as fluid or explosive as DeCastro during position drills. Martin was also just average in the vertical (30") and broad jump (8'8") - at least in comparison to how other highly regarded offensive tackles performed at the Combine. While Martin's disappointing Pro Day will no doubt raise some concerns, three impressive years protecting Luck's blind side speaks for itself and will almost surely keep the big man in the draft's initial frame. -
For what it's worth, Riley Reiff did 23 reps and ran a 5.21 at the combine, with a 4.77 in the shuttle...

I don't believe a guard has ever ben picked as high as #10 in the history of the draft. Nice player, but poor value for a premium pick...

I'm coming around to Martin as the pick. Based on everthing we know about Buddy, this description sounds like his prototype first round pick (experience, character, smarts, immediate contributor): "Jonathan Martin is one of two tackle prospects in this year's class who could be called elite, and given the value of the position will be a likely first-round pick because of it. He embodied all that Stanford football was throughout his time there, as he is an aggressive, smart, technically sound prospect who will enter the league at a stage in his development where he should be able to contribute immediately." Not much differene between 10 and 15, IMO, if you get the guy you're sold on...
