  1. smh. Sully was a BN employee. He did not have carte blanche or a guaranteed column for life (although he comes off as just another entitled, Guild-protected old timer in that Buffalo Rumblings piece). It was never his column. It was the BN's column. Ultimately, they wanted to go in another direction and he left the building...
  2. Bupkis. They are an advertising-based business. Take away the retail ad dollars (Bon Ton, being just the latest revenue hole) and you get what you see. As retail goes, so goes the newspaper business, especially with a disruptive low-cost alternative competitor like online media... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_department_stores_of_the_United_States#New_York
  3. smh... "The Gorilla Foundation was also sued in the mid-2000s by two former employees for sexual harassment. The workers alleged Patterson pressured them to show Koko their nipples. Nipples apparently intrigued the gorilla, according to Slate."
  4. Whaley's culpable by the nature of his GM position, but that pick was 110% a Rex Ryan production, IMO. In fact, his son Sean probably made the pick and Daddy Rex said "Sure thing, I love Clemson!"...
  5. Bingo. He's cheap and if the light bulb goes on at SJF, effective rotational depth at an important position. It will be up to him to show the work ethic McD demands over the next two months...
  6. Agreed. Beane is usually pretty generic in his remarks, but I thought he was more relaxed and candid in his interview with Fairburn than he's been with the BN. It's a good start. It will be interesting to watch the dynamic between OBD and the Snooze vs. TA as we get into the season...
  7. News is generic. But how about entertainment and insight? Quality writing's worth paying for, just like quality music, quality movies, quality beer, quality women...
  8. No. TG gets a "not a douche" pass on anything tweeted about Harrington...
  9. Signed up this morning for two years $79.99--equivalent to the cost of a good night out, a pair of Bills tickets in the upper deck or, at scalper prices, a Sabers season ticket...
  10. Nice lineup...just signed up for the two-year plan...
  11. The BN isn't going anywhere soon. The stable of writers who just left will be replaced with a younger, hungrier, more motivated (and yes, cheaper) new crew. Every publication need to refresh its product periodically and I'm looking forward to what rolls out in the months ahead...
  12. Why? The BN is still a top-50 newspaper in a city fortunate enough to have an NFL team to cover Many talented, younger folks at smaller publications will be lining up to fill those slots. Or in the case of Vic and TG prior to their act II stints, guys from larger markets / outlets looking to stay in the game...
  13. Too late. It appears to be permanently affixed...
  14. I believe Aerosmith's going out again this fall, but mostly outside the U.S. They played the New Orleans Jazz Festival in April, so they're still keeping active...
  15. 90% Aerosmith, with a few excellent covers (Whole Lotta Love, Piece of My Heart, Come Together) and two songs from his latest album, which were much better live than on the recording. Going in, I was worried about the set list being "country-fied" but it was a straight-up rock show...
  16. More like a new sports editor (Josh Barnett) building his own team. Same as with McD and his "process"...
  17. Steven Tyler put on a great show at Artpark last night. His new band was tight and he's still a great frontman at 70...
  18. Asset, yes. Timeh is a very good writer. But his specialty, long form pieces, is an expensive luxury for a mid-size regional newspaper like the BN. Now The Athletic, that's another matter. They should scoop him up...
  19. Josh is serious about rebuilding the sports desk. Out with the jaded, lifer crew. In with the fresh new eyes. Interesting times...
  20. Essentially, it's a training ground for aspiring scouts: https://www.catscratchreader.com/2014/2/5/5382854/a-deeper-look-at-blesto-scouting-services Membership responsibilities includes over $100,000 in annual dues and the assignment of at least one scout to the group. As scouts evaluate the current class of seniors visiting schools' pro days, they often work out underclassmen for future draft years. This data and other information is presented at meetings (usually in Florida) about two weeks after the current draft. The BLESTO and National reports are published from these meetings. These reports serve as a both starting point for the lengthy evaluation process and also a rough guide as to where players are regarded by the group. Some teams assign their most junior scout to the job of BLESTO/National regional rep, and the best ones are usually promoted or headhunted away from the role in short stint. This instability with the reps (and the lack of evaluating the senior season) can and will affect the accuracy of the reports.
  21. I agree. I believe TG meant what he said. So the real question is, "Why single out Vic?"
  22. Interesting thought: Couldn't TG's criticism of Vic being in the picture with Bennett extend to Jimbo inviting him in the first place? If Corney's such menace to society and all-round moral scourge, why would a highly religious couple like Jim and Jill even associate with him? My God, children may have attended that golf outing. How would you ever explain backdoor action gone bad to them...
  23. https://www.deseretnews.com/article/659928/Book-details-NFLs-criminal-side.html Benedict cited the case of Atlanta Falcons linebacker Cornelius Bennett, who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman who accompanied him to a hotel room in 1997 and served 36 days in jail. [BTW, trying to insert a size XXL **** in a size M ******* is never a good idea] "He was charged with three felonies and a misdemeanor," the writer said. "The charges were dropped because he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge as part of a plea bargain. That doesn't mean he didn't do those things." Then again, the woman was not some innocent young thing... https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bennetts-accuser-arrested/
