1. So after posting that, are you ready to admit that the offers a team gets for a player is not a very good indication at all of the talent or worth of said player?

It has been said in different spots but there are many reasons, all working concurrently and to varying degrees, as to why Travis is not getting huge offers. People here (and I am sure GMs and coaches around the league) attach different weight to each of these, and put them in various orders, but they are many, including:

    1. There is a glut of good running backs in the draft, in both the first couple rounds, and in the lower rounds.

    2. There are several running backs available in trade around the league, some better than Henry that aren't going for a huge price.

    3. Travis's contract, while on the surface quite cheap, in reality causes his value to go way down. You give too much away and you may only have him for one year. You sign him for a long term deal and not only are you giving up something valuable to get him but you may get screwed.

    4. The Bills are either strongly or desperately trying to get rid of him and you think he can be had on the cheap.

    5. He was hurt last year and has a history of injury problems.

    6. He has excellent proven running skills but has obviously liabilities, is our offense the best offense for a player like this.

    7. He has had a history of off the field problems and isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, which happens to be hanging on the wall next to another dull tool, his agent.

    8. Player trades are relatively hard to pull off in the NFL because of the draft and FA and salary cap.

I dont know why you keep driving this home. Of course there are many factors which enter a trade.

The thing is, none of them will make Henry as good as you think he is, nor perhaps as bad as I think he is. 0:)

  2. I just hope this isn't some kind of indicator of Henry's true trade value.  I mean, look at some of the posts toward the end of last year and how people were blasting Travis here on the Wall.  If there is any truth to what most were saying at that time, then how much value can he really have?  Yeah, yeah, he had a couple 1,300 yard seasons and was a Pro Bowler once (due to Priest Holmes' injury).  But, what if the events that happened later overshadow all of that?  If that is the case, maybe his value isn't so high.  That could also explain why there's not a line of GMs waiting to talk to Donahoe to pull the trigger on a deal for Travis.  That would be awful, because it means we would either be stuck with a guy who doesn't want to be a backup or we'd have to take whatever we could get for him.

Speaking of trade value, on the NFL channel, Kirwan said that he thinks that Miami will fetch a 4th in 05 and a 3rd in 06 for Surtain. Looking at recent contracts, corners are a very hot commodity, yet this seemingly small price is said to be the most that the phish can get for a very good player.

In a year in which there seems to be a glut of good RBs in the draft, and names like James and Alexander out there, it is hard to believe that TH has much value, especially given his obvious limitations.

Once again, I am making zero predictions, but I will be flat out amazed if Green gives up Shelton AND swaps 2nd round picks.

  3. The phrase "vast right wing conspiracy" draws mocking groans and and skepticism from conservatives, but if any of them ever bothered to do a little research and background checks then maybe it wouldn't come as a surprise that there was a concerted effort to take Clinton down from the beginning.

    297131

That has little to do with this topic. I stand by my claim that the Clintons set a poor moral example. Monica was not planted by Gingrich, nor was Clinton forced into any sex acts.

  4. Cappucines, my favorite Italian place. S/W corner of 19th Street and 2nd Ave.

From the outside, it appears to be justy a small, non-descript Italian restaurant but people come from as far as Ct. to eat there.

They serve basically everything but are known for seafood.

    Try the red snappers.

  5. That's right - I forgot kids weren't having any type of sex before Clinton.

    296235

Of course I do not lay ALL of the blame on Clinton, and yes, teens were engaging in oral sex long before he was around.

That said, he did deny "having sex with that woman," thus implying that oral isn't sex. Hillary was worse. Remember the thumbs up and the "right wing conspiracy?"

Certainly you dont think that this was setting a good, honest nor safe example for our children, do you?

  6. I don't believe in absolutes but I worked PT for a shipping company at the airport when I was in the military and I saw EXACTLY what he was talking about.  Plus, my sister-in-law has been a FedEx driver for 15 years.

My experience with unions has not been a good one, though there have been exceptions on occasion.  I agreed with you before that jobs in the public sector like police need protection because they work for scummer politicos looking to make their mark by offering up someone no-name in a highly publicized case.  That doesn't mean I think it works very well or that people like Jackie Presser should be flying around in Lehr jets dressed in Armani bought off the backs of laborers.

    296253

Has your sister-in-law ever explained why the voted against a union? I could never understand this.

As for Presser, you will get no arguement from me. Ron Carey seemed to be a good leader, but it looked like he was fighting off the mob and the government....a pretty tall task.

Btw, the "Italian Mafia" is all but finished, and their role in organized labor is all but done.

  7. Oh that's right.  When someone uses life experience in a contrarian argument, they are looking down on others.  Got it.

    296137

Come now Darin. His knowledge of FedEx consists of what managers told him. That is what he said. He does not claim to have actually seen how they treat packages, yet he took a stance (much to your delight I am sure) against a success story, unionized company.

Seriously, does the fact that unionized workers at UPS are fairly compensated for working hard bother you? Do you scorn each and every union and/or their members? Or, are you just going off on a hair splitting tangent?

Man, where is DC Tom, the master of hair splitting tangents?

  8. Jaguars vs. Bills - Doug Flutie naked bootleg - crowd goes wild - I got really, really hooked...

    Charles

    296140

I was there. It was the most exciting sporting event I have ever attended.

Do you remember the clutch sack by Pat Williams? I barely knew who he was at the time.

  9. All well and good to think we hold all the cards at this point, yet if LJ hits the open market all bets are off as to who has the inside track.

The cliche of the NFL being all about business means the hightest bidder wins and we normally do not overbid (thankfully I may add).  Having said that, signing LJ is not a high stakes issue at this point, imho, so if we can swap second round spots then TD is as close to pure genius on the off-season part of deal making than any GM in the game today. Period.

    296091

I completely agree with this post.

  10. Miami vs. Buffalo, 1994. I believe it was Columbus Day Weekend. The Bills won by 10 or so points. Dan Marino threw a 40 yard out pattern over the Bills defenders' outstretched hand. It was one of the best passes I have ever seen to this day.

I fell in love with RWS and WNY and have been back every year since. I cannot wait until the schedule comes out!

  11. And the problem with all this is?

Look, it is a FACT that the average American worker won't accept less than 6-7 an hour. If you were a large farmer adn you could pay Mexican migrants a QUARTER of that, why wouldn't you?

    295925

Joe, despite the name of the town, there are no farms; it is a residential community in which homeowners pay an average of $6,000 per year for a modest house.

The immigrants, and again, there are thousands of them, place their kids in the schools. Guess who pays for this, and their medical care?

Perhaps my view is simplistic, but from where I sit it looks like corporations gouging the taxpayers and getting the benefits while people like our families bear the cost.

  12. This best represents what I feel has slipped by the eyes of the Henry detractors. While spending all that time telling us about his many flaws and how terrible he is, they failed to see him actually become a good pass receiver (right down to the play he got injured on last year) and improve his fumble numbers greatly over the past 2 seasons. As stated, no, he does not compare to Willis in his completeness, but his improvements have been missed.

    295269

OK, then let me ask you this....where are the trade offers? One poster thinks that he can "easily" gain 1500 yards. Again, where are the offers?

Serious question: If a team, any team, called TD and offered up a 2nd round pick for TH, do you think that TD would take it? You see, I do, especially with the draft creeping up, yet he is still on the team.

My point is that if TH was as highly regarded around the league as he is on this board, this conversation would be a moot point. He would already have been traded to another team for a high pick or a good player.

    Jmo.

  13. ok, let me retell this cliffs notes style to spare you from the boohoo drama

-ship with fedex which uses non union labor and will treat your packages with respect because their jobs are on the line

pardon my idealistic views that believe that my packages should arrive undamaged

    295743

OK, let me put what I am saying in a friendlier way....

UPS is thriving. The employees work very hard and are well compensated. These are good things.

At UPS and DHL, the workers have seniority rights. This does not mean that they take it easy all day, as I am certain you have seen while employed there. Without this kind of stability, it is difficult for a person to make a marital committment and support his or her children.

Non-Union companies have an easier time firing people as they age and/or get sick. Believe it or not, this will happen to you some day.

While reading one of your postings, I recall being impressed by your education. I also respect you quite a bit for working at a hard, physically demanding job while attending school. That said, I find no reason for you to begrudge those who are perhaps less accomplished than you will be in all probability.

I cited UPS as an example of a Labor/Management situation that can work for both sides. If the service was THAT bad, UPS would not be expanding all over the world.

My friendly (albeit unsolicited) advice to you is to continue to work hard and achieve. I am confident that you will do so.

At the same time, please try not to think so little of those unable to soar to your heights. There is just no need for it.

  14. It's amazing to hear people regurgitate the same tired lies.

Illegal immigration is a terrible problem in this country and its not the lettuce pickers and landscapers who sneak across that we really need to worry about.  It's the thugs and terrorists and the politicians who continue to turn a blind eye to same.

    295302

This is a problem that will not stop thanks to our loving, caring politicians.

The repubs view these people as cheap labor for their corporate friends. When it comes time for medical benefits, who pays? Oh yeah....you and me.

The dems view them as potential voters. Some, like the Clintons, also view them as cheap labor for their corporare friends, such as Wal-Mart and Tyson Foods; two Arkansas based companies that have been jammed up for hiring illegals.

In Suffolk County NY, there is a town named "Farmingville." Years ago, there was a large Portuguese enclave. Some residents tell stories of having to hide relatives in their basements because Immigrations chased them down.

Today, several hundred, perhaps a thousand illegal aliens line the streets of Farmingville each and every day waiting for contractors to pick them up for day labor. This happens right in front of the police. Residents have complained to Immigrations, and some were told to "move" if they were unhappy from what I am told. They refuse point blank to enforce the law, and residents get zero help from elected officials, except for one.

New County Executive Steve Levy proposed that some Suffolk County Police Officers be deputized as Marshalls, in order to deport ONLY violent felons. For his trouble, Mr. Levy was called a racist, etc. by leftists.

As I said, this issue is not going away. It is just another tool for politicians to drive down labor costs, serve their friends, and perhaps hire a cheap nanny to raise their kids.

  15. Matt Jones sounds strikingly like Mike Mamula.

    295452

    Wow, Mike Mamula!

As I recall, he was slated to go in the 2nd or even 3rd round. Then, he went to the combines and was SO great at everything, he wound up being selected 9th overall. The thing is, everyone at the combines was so giddy over his numbers, the fact that he was unable to play football slipped right by them.

I dont know enough about Jones to put him in this class, but Mamula is the poster boy for placing too much emphasis on times and numbers in the combines and not enough on the football field.

  16. >>>Protestantism has much to be proud but it's intrinsic defect is that it persists that if it is mildly ritualistic it must be wrong= Roman Catholic.<<<

I think that now would be a good time to quit while you are ahead.

I will refrain from any criticism of Catholocism. Will you please do the same about Protestantism?
