Thanks very much for posting that.
I am hoping that by trading TH, or some other way, TD can wiggle his way up in the draft and bring us a CB and a blocker with his first 2 picks.
Good work!

One point about Woodson's $10.5 M. The cost of the tag for a CB is much less than that. However, after he was designated with the tag (as an exclusive rights franchise player to boot) last year, his 2004 salary was inflated -- and he commanded an increase of 20% over what he made last year, which is greater than what the franchise tender would have been this year. So, if we tag Nate, it would likely "only" be in the $7-$8 M range next year. And if some other team wants to shell out two number ones for him, that is OK too.
That is interesting. I hope that you are correct. What I do know is that this number was inflated by the HUGE cap cost of Ty Law.
If your numbers are correct, Woodson had more than an 8 million dollar cap hit last season. Although I am not doubting you, this does seem high. Then again, Mike Williams already counts at the obscene figure of 9.17 mil.
Do you remember when Woodson was selected in the first round?

Several years ago, the Bills were in the playoffs with their 4th and 5th string corners as I recall. You saw how that turned out.
I think that MaGee has a great upside, but he returns kickoffs. Clements IS very good, and he returns punts. This increases the injury risk for both. The Bills are dangerously thin at CB. The pass rush that our front 4 provides is good, but not earth shattering. This football team needs more quality corners and quickly, considering that Nate is all but gone after this season.
-
Absolutely right. That was insane. I have never seen Gibbs do something that dumb in his career.
Placing the franchise tag on Woodson for 10.15 million HAS to be right up there. He is guaranteed the money, AND he will be a UFA in 06 and cash in again. It makes you wonder how any GM could be just that stupid.
Letting him walk would have made twice the sense of paying him that kind of cash!
-
I think that the Bills are going to take a CB with our first pick no matter where we are in the draft. This year is by far one of the better years to get a CB, much like last year's draft was deep at WR.
9 CBs are projected to be drafted in the first two rounds.
Based on TD's draft history, if he selects a CB with the first pick, you can expect Nate Clements to be either tagged next year and traded (Peerless), or the Bills will let him walk in FA (Antoine WInfield).
In 05, the franchise tag costs more for a cb (woodson 10.15 million) than a LT (Pace approx. 8 million).
Imo, the tag is no longer an option wrt Nate at that price.

That moves us up about 20 spots to the end of the first. IMHO it's probably about right value, but I don't see Philly wanting him. He would be the backup, they would be better served using their own second and picking up a back. As for the Bills not sure what they gives us, it would depend on who is available. I just don't see us being helped much at all by that trade, other than clearing Travis from the locker room. We however wind up taking on more cap burden with a 1st rounder.
True, the Eagles might not be the spot.
What the Bills WOULD get in terms of this kind of a deal is a much better chance at a cornerback, if this is where they are going.
I have a feeling they will go very fast, and the jests are almost certain to select one with their first pick.
The OGs went faster than expected last season as well if I recall.
-
VA, it is obvious that you and I value TH far less than the party line, but i have one for you.....
Do you think that the Eagles would take our 2nd round pick & Henry for their 1st round pick? I have my doubts if the Eagles would make the trade, but I would gladly do so.
-
Thank you for this much needed clarification.
After 06, Milloy and Big Sam will border on being old players, this if they stay healthy after 2 more seasons.
-
clements is a free agent after next year.......obviously a big priority right now, as his price gets higher and higher the longer TD waits......all the other guys you listed are free agents after the 2006 season.......the only one i would offer a contract to right now is kelsay, as he is still on his first contract and would surely love a fat signing bonus along with an early jump in pay........
2 years is a LONG time........we have 2 drafts to prepare for any potential departures of vets..........it's really not that big a deal, but will play in to the drafting strategy to some degree........
ron edwards is a priority if the bills are turning over the #2 DT job to him.......if that is the case, he should be offered an extension......if he plays out his contract year, we could pay big time for it..........
locking up mcgee is a priority, but as he will only be an RFA next off-season, it will not kill us to have him play out his deal.......more effort should be made to extend him though, as he should be eager to sign a fair deal given his 4th round status.......
i would also extend reed now and not wait until after the year to deal with him..........if he has a rebound season (as i think he will) he's as good as gone.........
Do you know exactly how long it takes a player to be eligible to become a RFA and/or a UFA?
We might as well keep taloking about it. As we speak, fully one half of the posts on the front page are OT.
-
Are you positive about Kelsay? He was not a RFA this year. Are you certain he will be a UFA in 06?
This would present a problem. It is extremely hard to find DEs. Many complain about this kid but imo, he was one of the most improved players on the team in 05. His continued improvement is very likely, and the Bills need to have a pair of top DEs.
As I stated in another thread, sadly, losing Clements seems probable. Do you think he would accept a 5 year/35 million dollar contract right now? He might very well not. Do you want to pay him that much?
Tough questions for TD.
-
Did uou see the franchise number for the CB position? Woodson signed an offer of 10 million dollars. Ironically, Law drove up that price and was cut.
In any event, this all but takes away the option to tag Clements in 06. I like him a ton as a cb, AND he returns punts, but imo, cb is just the wrong position to allocate 10 mil. worth of cap space.
Winfield got more than 30 million dollars. Clements is clearly superior, and he is a very good return man. What will HE want, 40 million? 50 million?
It may work out, but I am thinking that the Bills need to draft a corner on day 1 of the draft. I would have loved to get Surtain as well.
I think that TD should have tried last season to extend Nate. You know, maybe he did, but looking at the whole picture, I am thinking that 05 is it for Nate as a Buffalo Bill.

I voted for Wahle. I would have went for Shelton, but TH is just so stupid that he could very conceivably screw things up wrt his rumored trade for Shelton.

It would be interesting to know the offers made to Jonas and Pat before the 2004 season began.
Schobel's offer seems to have been much more competitive and while Aaron's sack total was down this year--his run stuffing was much improved, he forced 5 fumbles, plus he has never missed a game in 4 years.
Jonas Jennings, as has been well chronicled, has missed games every year--and much if it has to do with shoulder and ankle issues--I wonder if something potentially chronic is developing -- he averages somewhere between 3 and 4 missed games a year. He is above average when in the game and not hurting but he has had games where he looks awful -- usually either before or just after missing a couple. This is not a guy I would think demands Tait/Diem type money, let alone Pace/Jones or Ogden type bucks to be honest. We need a replacement, but we also have a lot invested in the line already -- we need to get both a starting LT and LG out of a cap number that Jonas would want for himself.
Pat Williams is the proverbial warrior. Very durable, play disruptor, etc. But I watched Ron Edwards a lot this year..especially in the Dolphins home game where he spent the day in the Dolphins backfield..He is not Pat Williams when it comes to being the immovable object--but he has some skills that can offer consistent push. Pat is 32--his tackles this year dropped by 30-40% from the previous two years...and the Defense overall is a lot better than when we let Ted Washington go 4 years ago...Pat is not worth $5 million a year to us...he may be to some other team that needs to upgrade their D, but for us, we have invested in other areas of the D (LB, Secondary in particular to upgrade)--we need to have a cheaper DT that has come up through the system and we need to invest in making our 3rd down Defense better--(pass coverage LB, another corner, pass rusher) --which is something Pat had little influence over....
I will miss Jonas and Pat--but I think resigning them to big contracts are more like "Jerry O and John Holocek" moves than they are "Moulds, Schobel and Pat Williams first extension like" moves.....
>>>I will miss Jonas and Pat--but I think resigning them to big contracts are more like "Jerry O and John Holocek" moves than they are "Moulds, Schobel and Pat Williams first extension like" moves..... <<<
BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is the difference in style between Mr Butler and TD. With respect to Mr Butler, he was at least as good on draft day as was TD. I think that he was better.
TD is a better cap man. There is ZERO reason to sign these two at a huge cap cost. They do NOT deserve to be paid like Pace and Seymour. They are not nearly as good.
TD will let them walk if need be, and I resoect him for it.
-
It's not quite that easy. TH could just sit tight and be a UFA at the end of the 2005 season. AZ could end up with nada and TH could make a lot more scoots elsewhere next year and beyond. The market for proven runningbacks is endless. Someone will want him on their roster this year. Be patient. TD is.
The market for QBs, LTs and DEs is endless. The market for RBs is very limited.
Faulk (in his prime): a 2nd and a 5th.
Dillon: A 2nd
Compared to either of those two, Travis Henry flat out sucks. Do you NOT see this? Travis, imo has trade some trade value for ONLY 2 reasons:
1) Although not fast, he is a strong runner.
2) He does not have a big contract.
If this nonsense continues, all it indicates is that, as Albany said, TH does not have enough confidence in himself that he will merit a bigger payday in 06.
Woodson does. He just made a jackass of Al Davis and the raiders org. He signed a 'Franchise" offer and will get a huge, guaranteed contract this year, and be a ufa in 06.
I stand by my assertions that Travis Henry is a lousy football player, and a virtual idiot.
The Bills would do oh so well to get rid of him.
-
I don't understand Travis Henry's position on a long term deal unless he has 0 confidence in his ability. Being traded to Arizona with only one year left would be a dream if the guy had 1/2 a brain. Why would any player want a long term deal with one of the league's worst franchises, when as an alternative, he plays one year there, showcases himself & gets better $ with a better franchise. Either Travis is flat broke again & is looking for the quick fix that the multi-year contract's signing bonus would provide, he thinks he's going to get injured again &/or suck this season, or he just is clueless. He can spend one year with Arizona & be in line for a windfall in 1 year-his market value for a contract is a lot lower today than it would be with a good season.
I really thought that it would be Arizona, looking to protect its interests, looking for the long term deal & not the other way around. Travis Henry & his agent's stupidity continues to amaze.
If this trade does not go down, it will be yet another of the countless examples of the Bills being bitten in the ass by the sheer stupidity of Travis Henry.
What I will not do is blame his agent. As fans, this is easy to do but the agent really cannot do much without the blessing of the player.
I just hope that it gets done and he is out of here once and for all.

KH, I sat in the first row at RWS for the Cardinal game behind the Bills defense. Listen, there is NO FRICKEN WAY that PW weighs 317 lbs. Please believe me, it is not possible. I am stating point blank that if he weighs an ounce, he weighs 350. My guess is closer to 370, and I am not exagerating one iota. On the sidelines, he looks as if he can barely walk, then he runs in and makes plays. He makes Edwards look small.
That said, it is hard to compare the two. Edwards is on the rise. PW is more than likely on the way down, present skills notwithstanding.
I dont think it is THAT big of a stretch to think that it is possible for Edwards to at some point be in the same class as PW.
Right now, it all comes down to salary cap, or so it seems. PW was not a full time player last year. It is very likely that his production will decrease. Personally, I am against giving him a large contract, especially one with a bonus that will hurt us down the road if/when he is cut.
-
The Raiders are $15.7 million over the $85.5 million salary cap, not counting the Jerry Porter contract and the future acquisition of wide receiver Randy Moss, who has a $7.25 million salary.
Franchise tenders can backfire. Woodson signed it and is guaranteed the $10.5 million. The Raiders probably hoped to do a cap friendly deal to keep him. Now they have major cap problems.
That is great stuff! "Franchise" contracts are guaranteed, so the Raiders cannot get out of this if Woodson wants to stay, and why wouldn't he?
He can start all over next year as a ufa, sign with another team, and get a huge bonus.
This had to be one of the dumbest moves by a front office that I have ever seen.
Now, do we all see why TD didn't place the tag on Jennings?
-
-
More than double? Mike Williams is said to have a 9.17 million dollar cap hit.
-
Right. I hope I am right in that TD follows the Warren Buffet mantra of value investing. Phat Pat is good but he never deserved 5 mil at any time and certainly not now. He is good but hardly irreplacable. Takeo, Lee evans, Willis and JP and Clement are worthy of high compensation. The rest have to keep an eye on the draft and free agent list. Is my list too short?
>>>>Is my list too short?<<<<
Well, you could have added CV and Fletcher, but your list is too long because of the fact that JP is on it. He is already "worth high compensation," huh? Well, I guess he DID show good form in the hospital last season.
Mind boggling I tell you.
As for PW, I never truly believed this "hometown discount" thing in full. PW is good, but 5 mil per season is WAY too much.
As far as others calling him the anchor of the defense, etc., sorry, not close. There is one superstar out there, and his last name is Spikes.
-
No. I do not issue you any type of challenge in any way.
I am saying that it is FAR harder to find quality blockers than dumb, suckass running backs.
What I also wan to do is thank you for the dialogue. We truly should discuss this after things unfold.
This is going to be a GREAT offseason.
What I DO offer is this...I think that IF the trade goes down, it will cost the Bills Travis and a 3rd in 06. This is my official prediction. What is yours.....again, IF the trade goes down?
-
Of course I would like to see more! I love the Buffalo Bills football team!
That said, what I want and expect are two different things.
If TD could pull off this trade straight up, I tip my hat to him as a GREAT GM. However in truth, more humans can run (and be lacking in each and every other phase of being an NFL RB) than can play LT.
Honestly, I am puzzled at how any truly serious NFL fan could disagree.
-
He drops passes, and does not do much if anything on special teams. The sooner we cut him, the happier I will be....and imo, the Bills will be a better football team.
Say goodnight Josh!
-
No, Im from the crowd that thinks that this should be an even trade. Apparently we all disagree on who is valued at what.
I feel Henry is a top ten RB, therefore I want a top ten T in a straight up trade. You could argue that a top ten LT is worth more than a top ten RB but BOTH have been heavily tagged this offseason, so the front offices dont seem to feel that way.
If you say that Henry, as a top ten RB is only worth a top 15 T, fine. I hust see Shelton as even worse than that.
View Travis as a "top ten" RB as you will. In truth, he is a top 10 loser. Why not examine his dismal record as a starter. He sucks, but perhaps the Cards really do need a running back enough to trade us Shelton for a future pick and this loser.
But hey, dont let me interrupt your fantasy of TH as anything more than a braindead, so-so at best running back.
Brad Johnson to be Released

Drew's game was downfield passing. Johnson is more into the short game, where mobility matters far less.
I think that he would be a splendid fit on this team in case JP gets injured, or sucks.
