1. >>>>or perhaps the bills could treat him fair and not lowball him at all, giving him both a deal early and for a price that he would receive on the open market?<<<<

This point and the others in your post are well taken, but it would make sense for TD to bid low, considering that NC IS under contract, and by not extending, take a risk of losing millions due to injury.

Personally, I would be afraid to take this kind of risk. My ego would mean less than this kind of financial security for my family.

It worked for AS, and I hope it works for NC.

  2. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. Certainly I hold the governments of the US and UK to a higher standard since they are democracies, unlike most Islamic countries. I'm not sure that the actual populations are necessarily more civilized - certainly western countries are more developed and have a higher standard of living and this obviously has some effect on behaviour. I think most people want similar things from life, no matter where you go - a good life, a family etc... When these things are denied to them, for whatever reason, they tend to become "less civilized". I'll go back to my earlier point - was the mob that beat the truck driver to death in the race riots in LA really any much more civilized than the mob that mutiliated the bodies of the contractors in Fallujah?

    274911

From what I saw of the LA mob, they were opportunistic criminals. I remember that one of them struck the driver with a bottle, which was barbaric.

What they did not do was shoot him 9 times, carve him up, shoot him some more and leave a note on his body.

Make no mistake, I do not defend the LA mob. Were it up to me the people who did that truck driver would rot in jail, nor would I shed a tear if they were executed. I just do not see the same level of hate in your comparison.

    Jmo.

  3. i really don't understand this line of thinking........why can't the bills pay him?

and better yet, why haven't they even made an effort as of yet?

    274880

Historically, the Bills are not a team to tie up large sums of money at the cb position, and it does not seem to matter who is GM. Maybe it has something to do with RW, I dont know.

What they seem to do is draft a ton of cbs in the 1st round, such as Burress, Winfield, T. Smith, and Clements. I think that Henry Jones was even drafted as a corner.

Just based on this, the odds of keeping Nate dont appear to be strong. What I DO think is that much of it will be up to him. He could opt for security and sign early for less, as was the case for Schobel, or he could wait, which would bring more cash, but to wait is to also risk injury and get nothing.

  4. C'mon Liberals/Democrats/Union Supporters/Hippies.  Where are your excuses for this?

    270941

I have a problem with the part about bumper stickers, and NO, not because I voted for Bush. I believe in freedom of speech.

As for the parking of foreign cars, I support their decision. It is after all an American car plant.

    Blast away.

  5. As I said, I'm not trying to justify what happened to the contractors. However, I do believe the media is constructing a very one-sided picture of what occurred in Fallujah and this (seldom-mentioned) incident certainly contributed to hatred of the US in Fallujah.

They probably wouldn't cut off their heads, but are you so sure they would be in no danger? Wasn't a truck driver beaten to death by a mob following the Rodney King incident? Mobs are very ugly things, no matter what their nationality.

    274842

chicot, you seem to hold the US/Brits to a much higher standard than you do Islamic countries. Why is this? Do you find us to be more civilized?

  6. travis will be fine.  he will be playing for a new contract...therefore probably look terrific in backing up willis.  not only that, but he'll probably get to start a game or two due to injury, and look good doing that, too.  he has nothing to gain and everything to lose by being an ass.

    274855

Why do you think that there are no "decent offers" on the table? Is every GM in the NFL underestimating his value? As far as Travis getting a couple of starts, past w/l records tell us that these would quite probably be looses, whereas his record as a starter is far worse than that of Drew.

TD is saying what he should be saying, but when September rolls around, Travis Henry will be losing games for another football team, should he of course have a job.

  7. You're far from being "typical" ticket holder.  About half of RWS is filled by Western New Yorkers.  Another 25% or so is from Rochester and Southern Ontario.  While there are some long distance travelers, the hotel occupancy in Buffalo certainly does not feel much impact from 8 home games per year.

The impact from 100 visiting players, refs, TV crews over the weekend is also negligible.  The thing most people fail to comprehend about the Buffalo economy is its size...$25 Billion (yes, billion) in total output per year.  It may not be growing, but there's still a lot of economic value produced here.  The Bills $111 million annual impact amounts to less the one-half of one percent of that total.

    I am an economist, BTW.

    274482

I am not in a true position to challenge you as an economist.

What I do wish to tell you is that the hotel we stay at (Hampton Inn Amherst) is ALWAYS full when there is a Buffalo Bills football game. We make our reservations in April. This includes hotels, and car rentals.

When we stop at rest areas, there are always people that don either Bills clothes, or that of the opposing team for that particular week.

Call me dumb, but I am having a hard time understanding how the Buffalo Bills do not contribute to the WNY economy in a major way.

The percentages are what they are, but the waitress in "Alice's" makes more money on her shift during the week that our foursome attends a Buffalo Bills football game.

  8. in defense of Pace....half of the Rams line last year was collecting Social Security and flashing their AARP card at Denny's for the early bird special.

    C  McCollum  34

    RG  Timmerman 33

    LG  Nutten 33

Having said that...although i would love to have Pace on the Bills roster...I wouldn't want him at what he going to cost.

    274291

R.Rich is one of the most knowledgable posters on this board imo. There are only a couple of people I have ever met who seem to know as much about football as does he.

That said, he prefers Walter Jones (and probably Ogden) to Orlando Pace.

I for one do not. In my very humble opinion, Orlando Pace is one of the 5 best football players I have ever seen in my life. He might even be the best (remember, this is mho).

I was not partial to the decision made by TD to go with JP, nor do I pretend to be. I support the decision mind you, but I dont at all concur.

Having said that, imo, if Orlando Pace played LT for the Buffalo Bills football team in 05, we would win the AFC East. THAT is how much respect I have for OP as a player! Warner was an Arena qb. Losman after all DID go in round 1.

I dont expect it to happen, but OP on the Buffalo Bills has been a wish of mine for a long time.

Sadly, what prohibits this dream is a player we have at RT. His play has ranged from good to total dog sh&(, and his cap figure is 9.17 million dollars.

    Sad indeed.

  9. As much as we love the Bills, the actual dollar impact they have on the Western New York economy is quite small (last estimate was $111.5 million in 1996).

    http://www.ftballiance.org/stadiums/impact.php

Most of the $$$ being spent on the Bills are just "recirculated" (disposable income already here) rather than "new" money (income from outside the area).  Assuming 40,000 out-of-town fans attend 8 regular season games per season and spend $100 each, that only equals $32 million in revenue per year.

Factor in six months of player salaries while they're here (maybe $40 million) and all the related "spin-off" activities ($40 million) and you really don't get that big an impact in a WNY economy that's $25 billion in size (2002 Gross Metro Product).

The biggest impact the Bills have is psychological.  If/when the team moves, the $64,000 question will be how the "quality of life" decrease will affect companies staying in Buffalo?

    274309

I have been to RWS 11 consecutive years. The trip costs me approx. $600.00 per year, and I might be going light. Each time, there were four of us.

We spend money in the hotel, stadium, supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, airport, clothes stores (Bills apparel), etc. Last season I had a wicked cold and spent money in a pharmacy. The 100.00 per person figure is unimaginable.

Also, we often go to "Jacks" in Amherst, and a couple of times we were eating across from NFL refs. Let us also remember how much money is spent by players of opposing teams, and their fans.

I am far from an economist, but I am asking you to please reconsider your figures. I make the case that with the WNY economy being one that is far from booming, the Buffalo Bills football team pumps millions into it.

I am proud to be a part of this.

  10. We need a CB from the 1st day of the draft...I don't think the Bills will be

able to afford Clements.  Teams like Washington, Dallas or NY will throw

    big time money at him.

    273874

You are correct, no doubt. This might even be a situation where we take corners in the 3rd and 4th, much like the draft in which we took Irvin and Kerner.

The Bills are in a position where they need corners even if they are able to keep Clements, which like you, I doubt.

Personally, I would like to see a draft of CBs and Offensive Limemen. Moats would be nice to back up WM as well.

  11. I don't care if he steals his drinking money from the collection plate every Sunday, I don't care if he is mean to old ladies and I don't care if he is a locker room towel-snapper.  I am not recruiting a church choir or a scout troop.  I want an offensive lineman who will gnaw off the knee caps of a DT before letting him get within 10 feet of JP.  I could care less if he is a "quality individual".

If he can block, sign him.

Some of the best players we have ever had were jerk-wad !@#$$ off the field though, in memory, we tend to retroactively canonize them.

    273700

Does DeMulling have known character issues, or is this just about him taking his time to decide?

  12. Willis McGahee - carries 284, yards 1128, avg. 4.0, 13 TD's in only 12 starts. Not bad for 3/4th of a season and no OL. The biggest problem with the O was the limited QB who now resides in Dallas.

I agree that the OL still needs to improve and I'm being patient. But the outright hysteria being promoted here does not impress me. Many have their minds already made up concerning the impending failure of Losman, the OL and the inability of our Coaching staff to improve anything. I may be concerned around Labor day, prior to the opener, if problems are SHOWN to be real, through training camp and actual pre-season action.

Declaring certain doom a FACT in mid-March is beyond assinine.

    273615

Mark, how many rushing TDs did the Bills have before WM was inserted as a starter? Rember, this is a "smashmouth" style offense, right?

My point is that Travis Henry and a rookie coach kept the Bills away from the playoffs just as much as did Drew. Wrt Travis, probably much more so.

  13. That is what happens when you sign a top pick.  You have to pay them big money.  Face it--that is what happens in the NFL today and it happens to all teams.  The Pats paid 10M for a CB out for half the season this year.  The Rams are paying close to 7M this year for Kurt Warner who played for the Giants last year and will be with a new team this year!  I'm sure the Bills want to restructure, but that is today's NFL.  He signed a standard contract for a 4th pick in the draft.  At least he plays as opposed to many top 5 picks who are gone from their teams--look at Cleveland.

    273455

Very good post, in which you raise a legit point.

I guess what bugs me is that the guys you mentioned play at higher paid positions as compared to RT. That, and the fact that they were also major contributors to superbowl wins. 0:)

  14. >>>Add to that JPL's mobility and he, unlike Drew can probably make effective short yardage throws and still has a cannon of an arm to get it downfield when called upon.<<<

You could have been describing RJ with the above. JP has proven zero at this point and would certainly not serve as a lure to offensive players.

He made a remark to some little kid at a speech and got 3 pages of praise on this board which is fine, but hardly enough to make a UFA want to come to Buffalo.

That said, players will as a rule follow the cash, thus making the question almost a moot point.

  15. I'm sure the Bills would like to re-do Williams deal.  That pretty much is the idea when you backload a rookie contract as drastically as the Bills did.  But I don't even think we can entertain the idea that they feel a "need" to make cap room until they cut a Pierson Prioleau or Coy Wire.  They may feel satisfied that Williams is on the path to success now.  They may be entertaining thoughts of moving him to left tackle but at a right tackle contract.

But, re-negotiating a contract is usually just stalling the impact, so worrying about his cap figures.....well, it's still going to cost.  The Bills are not in a bad cap situation, they are being frugal by choice, and if folks here think that making cap room will allow the Bills to add free agents they otherwise wouldn't, I think they're wrong.  If they want DeMulling, they can get it done.  If they wanted PLAX, they could get it done.  They are choosing their path in FA.

    273443

    Two questions:

    1) Do you think that DeMulling is good enough to make room for?

    2) Do you think MW would be a good LT?

  16. Other than Warner and Faulk, how would you say that the Rams built their superbowl winning team? Orlando Pace, the 1st pick of the draft, was as responsible as was any player, no?

Additionally, the Ravens would probably not have got it done without draft picks such as Lewis and Ogden.

Imo, one winning method (there are others) is to pay the bucks to blockers such as Ogden, Pace or Jones.

Mike Williams makes more than all three of these guys. The Bills will never win while in this situation.

  17. With our O-Line, we are defitnitely going to be forced to draft O-Line with that 2nd rounder.

    273206

Dont be too sure. The Bills biggest need has been OL for many years. This is not something new, but they almost always go in other directions.

I am all but sure that the Bills will take a corner with their first selection.

    Wait and see. 0:)

  18. By those figures, it would cost the Bills 6.54 mil. in amortized bonuses alone to cut him. As for next year, it depends on when that 3 million dollar roster bonus is due. If it is due pre 6/1/06, the Bills are truly screwed. They would not be able to soften the bonus hit if he is cut.

Look at those numbers, and think back on MW reporting to camp as a beached whale. The truth is, he was a very bad selection. I am a TD supporter more than a detractor, but signing MW was one of his worst acts as GM.

McKinnie is said to not be doing well either, but at least he plays LT. Left Tackles are paid more, and harder to find.

Our only hope is that he plays to an all pro level and earns at least some of this obscene money, but there is nothing to indicate that he will.

I hope that one day, the offensive line of the Buffalo Bills will stop dragging down the football team.

  19. I object to the treatment of the girl, if it is true. Sex crime is wrong no matter who perpetrates it.

As for the "shivering" 17 year old, I dont care. If this makes me a bad person, so be it.

Petrino, I must say that your post is very transparent. This is obviously nothing more than a slap at the president, as if he is over there looking at the girls breasts. Yeah, OK.

Dont you wish that you could sit on the lap of Nancy Pelosi and tell her your tales of woe?

Perhaps you could also tearfully kneel at the feet of your queen, Hillary, that great stateswoman who tells jokes about Asians, and no longer loves abortions. 0:)

  20. I dont think anyone here thinks that Mike Williams is worth 9 million bucks a year, and we'd all love to take that money and spend it towards FAs.  Sadly, we cant...cutting Big Mike only screws us further with the salary cap and he wont restructure.  So we are stuck with what we got for the O-Line.

    273319

Good post! The Bills cannot, in all probability, cut Big Mike until after 6/1/06. This season will be his do or die year in terms of staying on this football team.

Looking back, MW was a pretty bad choice by TD, but the draft was not especially strong. Also, the OL was SO bad at that time, there was no other direction for him to go.

If MW, the highest paid RT in NFL history, plays at a pro bowl level, his cap hit will be easier to live with. Sadly, whether or not he will do so is a crap shoot at best.

  21. Over the team's history, that's asking for a lot of research. Depends on how you categorize it otherwise. Best single draft by a team usually defers to the Steeler's 1974 draft - day 1 they picked Swann (HOF), Lambert (HOF), Stallworth (HOF), Allen, and Webster (HOF). Pretty tough to top that.

For the doom and gloomers, here's what a Pittsburgh-Post-Gazette columnist had to say about it: "The Steelers seem to have come out of the first five rounds of the draft appreciably strengthened at wide receiver but nowhere else. They didn’t get a tight end, and the ones remaining are more suspect than prospect. They didn’t get a punter, although none of the nation’s best collegiate punters went in the first five rounds. They didn’t get an offensive tackle that might’ve shored up what could well become a weakness. What they did get was Swann, who seems to be a sure-pop to help; Lambert, who figures to be the No. 5 linebacker if he pans out; and three question marks."  0:)

    273372

Good info! Do you know who Dallas drafted the year after the Herschel Walker trade?

  22. The players know something you obviously don't:  HE'S NOT A ROOKIE

Any rookie QB has no prior training or practice with an NFL team prior to mini camp after the draft.  Right now, JP is training every day at Ralph Wilson Stadium, while every rookie QB is nowhere near an NFL supervised schedule.  No rookie QB has practiced with veterans or had a team's elder statesman comment on how he was lighting it up against one of the NFL's best Ds in practice last December.

My answer is that no player is worried about playing with 2nd year veteran J.P. Losman.

    273300

Of course not. They have all read this board and realize that there is NO friggin way JP will not be enshrined in Canton.

They also are sure that the OL will matter little because JP, unlike Drew, can escape any and all pass rush, and make huge plays at will.

If anything, JP attracts free agents.
