Would you, right now, trade EJ for Tannehill? Chapter 2
1billsfan replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think that there's a frustration with regards to fans like yourself who say they know it takes time to develop an NFL QB, but then you want your cake and eat it too by trashing his game at every opportunity as if you’ve seen enough. If you understand that it takes time, then of course EJ’s going to look rough is some games, ok in others with a few clutch performances thrown into the mix. That was what the Bills drafted. Everyone on this board knew that EJ Manuel was a "raw" QB. Did you guys not know this? So how is it that now you guys get to possess a self righteous indignation towards the Manuel supporters who are still on the three year plan? It’s as if you guys are saying “well yes it takes more time, but we know he sucks anyways”. It's so phony. Let’s be real here. The whole purpose of this poll is to trash EJ. FireChan knew it would be a landslide and he wanted to twist the knife on him. On the fans who think that two years is not enough for a QB who was billed as “raw” coming out. Just know this, every fan here who voted for Tannehill are on the hook. If Manuel tears the division a new one and Tannehill is looking like a weakling QB as he often does, you guys will forever know in your mind that you would have traded these two QBs straight up. Tannehill will never make me regret my vote not to trade for him. -
Patience for the 2015 Bills Season - Joe Licata 2016!

I actually think the Bills will pick either Hundley or Grayson if they're there at #50. Am I the only one who thinks this? I think they throw the kitchen sink at the position. I'm starting to think that maybe half of the Taylor signing's purpose was to serve as a smoke screen so no one jumps ahead of them in the second round. -

I said my peace on it about as plainly as I possible could. Beyond what I said, there is no changing my mind until I'm proven wrong on the matter. -

Andrew Luck? Really? I can’t have a serious debate with you if you are going to compare Andrew Luck’s development with EJ Manuel. -

Who cares about practice, how was he against the Bears in Chicago? How was he against the Dolphins the following week? He was 2-0 to start the season and looked steady. Then he had two horrific games. That's what happens with young, raw QBs who are still learning the game. Was it in the teams best interest to let Orton play? Sure it was, because the team felt they had a real opportunity to win this season. But that should not be seen as a negative on Manuel like you seem to love to always harp on. It was the situation that the team had a monster defense and it was not fair to put EJ's development ahead of that team. I happen to think that the main thing holding back Manuel was his complete idiot head coach. Both in practice and on game days. You simply don't ever instruct a young 1st round NFL QB to never turn the ball over. Also, you don't tell QBs with the gift of making plays on the run to stay in the pocket because you might get hurt. You could almost see Manuel overthinking himself on every passing play. Marrone was an idiot. Having said all that, if Manuel can't make it happen with Roman then you and the haters were right. Roman has had success with both Smith and Kaepernick. With Roman coaching him, I think there's a decent chance that Manuel will have a solid season as the Bills starting QB this year (20-24 passing TDs/2-4 rushing TDs). Of course they'd get into the playoffs with that level of QB play and that's where EJ would get to show if he truly does have that franchise QB "it" factor. See if that 4-0 in bowl games transfers to similar NFL playoff success. -

To me, "no mans land" is thinking you have the problem solved when you really don't. The Bills are in the game of finding their guy and that means doing everything...developing Manuel and Taylor and seeing what they do this year, possibly drafting a QB at #50 who might be the answer, drafting a QB in the first round in 2016 or making a big trade for an established QB who's long in the tooth but has a couple of good years left. One way or the other the Bills will find their guy between now and next off season. They proved this offseason that they aren't afraid to do whatever it takes to get it done. -

I don't like Tanny and I still don't know about EJ or Geno yet. Head to head in their last game Geno had a 158 rating and 3 TDs vs Tanny who had a 87 rating and 1 TD. EJ beat Tanny in their head to head match up. I wouldn't trade EJ or Geno for Tanny because I know that Tanny isn't the answer. Much better to see what I have with either of those two with the ability to easily move on if they can't reach the average level of play of Tanny. I'm looking for something better than Tanny, a guy who I think will never win you a Superbowl as your starting QB. Trading for Tanny is signing on for being in "no mans land". No thank you. -

You're assuming that EJ and Geno wouldn't ever make the playoffs as the starting QB of their teams. You just can't wait to make the final call on EJ and Geno who are only on their third season. Why are you so quick to judge them? Alex Smith took 4 whole years before he showed the ability to even become a borderline average NFL starting QB. -
Do the moves by the Bills in free agency make sense so far?
1billsfan replied to jahnyc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nor should they. The Bills would need Dallas' early 90's offensive line to win the Superbowl going with the traditional "ground and pound" attack. That's the impossible dream. I'm glad the Bills will be running an offense geared towards the great skilled players they'll have. Can't wait to see how Manuel does in it. If Taylor thrives in it then so be it. I just don't want Cassell as our starter. -

Kaepernick's not an "average" IMO. He's an unpredictable QB with a specific skill set that could actually win you playoff games against top QBs. Dalton, Smith and Tannehill just do not bring enough to the big games to ever win you a Superbowl. They will win you enough regular season games to make everybody just happy enough, they just won't ever have that pot of gold to look forward to with those guys. -
Tyrod Taylor visiting the Bills--edit signed per Rex

You just know on passing plays that Rex and Roman are going to let EJ out of the cage. That's going to be exciting to see. At least let him win or lose the job doing what he did best in college. -

Don't get hung up on the top 10 thing. It's more the knowledge that they are very average QBs who will never win a Superbowl. You need a lot more than what they have to beat out the QBs you will be facing in playoff games and in the Superbowl. -

I understand that its a small sample, but Manuel looked good in that video. He looked like a bird flying around and having fun. Seemed very comfortable on rollouts. So Marrone in his infinite wisdom no doubt clipped his wings, kept him pinned in the pocket and told him not to ever make a mistake. What a brilliant, fun and creative guy that Doug Marrone was when he was here. -

I don't want an average QB for the Bills. I want a Superbowl championship and I would keep looking till I found a QB that could win one. Specifically a perennial top 10 QB. Having an average QB keeps you in limbo for 5-10 years before you even start looking around again. Cincy, KC and Miami are screwed more than the Bills are because at least the Bills are in the QB search game already. Those three teams will never win a Superbowl their current starting QBs. It may sound crazy, but that's how I look at it. -

Sorry if I don't have a lot of love for average Dolphin QBs. Geno Smith crushed him in the Dolphin's last game in Miami last season. Way to close out the season with a whimper. Tannehill isn't going to amount to anything other than average in this league. At least Geno and EJ still have the unknown factor going for them. -

This poll's sole purpose is to help provide a steady beat down of EJ Manuel for the like-minded haters like yourself. The sad thing is that you're using a loser Dolphin QB like Tannehill to help trash EJ. Manuel's ceiling is unknown right now. Tannehill's ceiling is becoming established as an average QB like Alex Smith or Andy Dalton who wilts under pressure in big games. I'd rather roll the dice on an unknown QB like Manuel than a known Smith or Dalton type. Tannehill 48 games - 5 game winning drives Manuel 14 games - 3 game winning drives (should have been 4 thanks to Chandler's fumble) Miami can keep that loser. I'll roll with EJ and if he doesn't work out, I'll find another QB next year either through the draft or a trade. Whichever way it goes it won't be hard to find a QB with a much higher ceiling than Tannehill. -
Bills' gamble on Percy Harvin sends contradictory message

Ever since this play I was good with Chandler not being a Buffalo Bill... http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000291023/Chandler-fumbles-it-away He really screwed the Bills season and the rookie QB's development with that one. I'm glad he's on the Patriots now, with the Bills rough and tumble defense Chandler will either coach it up or drop the ball in a key moment when they play against them. -
A lot of firepower. Which QB will make the most of it?

I'm very excited to see the competition between Manuel and Taylor because I think the Bills starting QB battle is between those two players. Cassell is "break in case of emergency" veteran QB IMO. He'll be a good presence/mentor to have around the young QBs. -

So the young developing QB EJ gets two years? The purpose of having and investing in a developing QB is to develop them for a few years and then see what you have. I think Manuel stays on the team regardless because even if he doesn't win the job he is still an unknown asset that has the potential to pay off huge dividends for the team or in a trade. There's the chance that Tyrod Taylor wins the starting job, plays great, gets hurt and then Manuel comes in to start and he plays great. That asset just turned into a potential 2016 first round pick traded to a desperate team looking for a starting QB. I'm a Manuel supporter, but I hope that either he or Taylor knocks it out of the park in training camp. I honestly don't care who, just one of those two guys. Cassell winning the job would really be a bummer because he is a known bottom 5 starting QB in the NFL. If Manuel ever did get cut then I couldn't even be upset because Roman is a real NFL coach (unlike Marrone) who knows his stuff and Manuel would have had to have been deemed a hugely flawed player who simply could never be corrected with proper coaching. I think that's a long shot scenario though. -

Project QBs like EJ have a two or three year learning curve to become a starting NFL QB. Hard to understand in the hot pocket world of RGIII, Luck, Wilson and Kaerpernick instant success, but this is the old school NFL way that actually used to work. Manuel is a QB who I could see become a solid starting NFL QB if he was given the extra time to develop properly. I don't understand many fans here who just write him off completely ignoring the fact that he was considered a raw QB coming out. It would be great if he played lights out this training camp, but if he doesn't that doesn't mean anything in regards to whether he'll ever be a solid starting QB in this league. Because the reality is that he probably needs this whole year to develop into a viable solid option for the 2016 season. While he's a mature person, it seems like he didn't have that "boss" like commanding presence in the huddle. He may need to just get another year older and watch how the old guys handle the players on offense. He never had that until Orton came in. -
Doug Whaley and Russ know about TBD

I beg to differ. More often than not, fans here have been more knowledgeable than the dolts at One Bills Drive over the past 15 years. Just look at the draft strategies that were head scratching by the majority. The Losman deal cost us Aaron Rogers, no one here would have signed on for moving up to get Losman (even without knowing Rogers would be there to pick next year). Everyone was like, who???? Then there's Whitner over Ngata, Aaron Maybin. That's just off the top of my head. The most recent questionable move was that they were ready to move forward with Doug Marrone of which I was very much opposed to. Lucky for them that idiot chose to leave. How crazy is that one decision by Marrone saved this franchise from the dumb decision to keep him? I'm not saying I'm smarter, just that they are not as intelligent as you make them out to be. Fans are deserving more credit than that statement. I remember a lot of fans here wanting them to draft Russell Wilson in the third, that's another one. Fans here can be stupid, but the majority of fans at TSW have been knowledgeable enough to have more common sense than the Bills have had for a long time. It seems like they are taking advantage of Marrone decision that saved themselves from themselves and they are finally getting it. -

I think the Bills are taking the "everything including the kitchen sink" approach to the QB problem. They will probably draft a QB in this coming draft also. This ramps up the competition which is a good thing IMO. Roll the balls out (as Roman said) and let the best QB win. -
Chip Kelly offered a rd 1 pick for Bradford
1billsfan replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bradford is on the last year of the last insanely high rookie contract so it would have made no sense for the Bills to give up next years 1st round pick on a player in his last contract year who has shown very little other than the ability to get hurt easily. I think the Bills will have better QB options next year like trading for possibly Kaepernick, Rothlesberger, E. Manning or Brees. Odds are that one of these teams will probably be ready to move on with a rookie QB and would take Bills 2016 high draft picks and use them to position themselves to draft one. Of course there's always the long shot scenario that EJ Manuel is playing like a very good QB down the stretch and into the playoffs. -
I think that Manuel was a raw college QB who was over drafted so my expectations right now are that of a 2nd or 3rd round developmental QB. My initial expectations were that he would be an established QB by his second year, but those changed when I saw that he just didn't have a comfort level or a firm grasp of the big job. His play confirmed what the detractors were saying, that he was a raw prospect with high ceiling and a low floor. I still have the hope that he's one of these QBs that with time a light would come on and he'd become a long term answer at QB. I'm glad Cassell's here because I think him being here will help in Manuel's development.
