WGR 550 talking about when to draft a QB
1billsfan replied to Canadian Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of course it's not a reach, but that's only if they see that QB as very close to being really good and is not a project. There is no longer a three year waiting period (that is unless you have an elite QB like Favre for a guy like Rogers to learn under). This past season has shown that high drafted rookie QBs play immediately. It should be fairly easy to access if a QB is ready or not. My top two guys are Manuel and Nassib and I'd be happy if we get either one with our 1st or 2nd round pick because I think both can be good right away. If they do use that 1st rounder on a QB, the Bills had better think that that QB will produce right away in 2013. They get a few games to get acclimated, but that's about it. Guys like Locker and Gabbert were project types to begin with and should have never been drafted where they were. -

I heard on the radio that Jarvis Jones will be a serious liability vs the run. I'm sorry to all the Jones fans out there, but if this is true I doubt very much the Bills will draft Jones. As for Barkley, the dude is hurt an awful lot. Not only that but it's been said his arm isn't that strong. I don't think Barkley's in the Bills' plans for that 1st round pick. I think Warmack should be on the list for that #8 pick, especially since our head coach is a former offensive lineman. -
Dr Andrews/Mike Shanahan at odds over RGIII injury
1billsfan replied to papazoid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The ironic thing here is that almost all of the former NFL players turned analysts thought that RGIII staying in the game (because he wanted to) was the right thing. Yet there currently is this massive lawsuit against the NFL being brought by former players who feel the league did not protect them enough. You can't have it both ways. The decisions made after that Ngata hit should make for one heck of a 30 for 30 documentary on what happened to one of the most promising and anticipated NFL careers in the history of the league. I was shaking my head watching him limp around. I was surprised he wasn't sent back to the locker room and put in street clothes after that second TD. -

I watched a couple of Wilson's games on youtube (Rutgers and LSU) and he looks to be the very definition of a first read "dink and dunk" college system passer. He's this year's Blaine Gabbert. I just don't understand what people here like about this guy. To me, he's a backup QB at most in the NFL. You have to have proven that you can go through progressions and throw the deep ball on a consistent basis to even be considered as a future elite QB in the NFL which is what we are all looking for in our QB pick in the draft. Someone show me a game where he's done that. -
How in the world is Tyler Wilson considered a first round talent? I just watched two of his games (Rutgers and LSU) on youtube and he looks like a first read, college "dink and dunk" system passer in the mold of Blaine Gabbert. I just don't understand what others are seeing in him. His long (planned first read) passes looked horrible. They say he's "tough", but I wouldn't know because he doesn't seem to have the balls to wait and look for someone open down the field.

I'd like the Bills to sign Jason Campbell and then hopefully be able to draft EJ Manuel in the second round after taking Warmack in the first round. That would set them up perfectly having the caretaker QB till Manuel takes over in 2014. I think Manuel is the most probable QB prospect to become an elite QB in this draft. Love his game and he's got a good head on his holders. Give him a great running game, receiving crew and solid defense and we have the makings for a nice long run at the Superbowl title. I see him having a Steve McNair type of career.
-
Other than Glennon (who I really wouldn't like in any round) we're on the same wavelength. I was thinking the same thing after watching Warmack destroy people last night. If they do let Levitre walk, you can then use the money they would have had to pony up for that fat contract to grab two really good LBs in FA (that is, if there are any available).
-
Two things regarding this topic... 1. EJ Manuel somehow always gets forgotten in these discussions and I simply don't know why. He has 25 wins and his completion percentage is around 68% for his career. I would love it if he or Nassib were there for the Bills in round 2. 2. Secondly, the competitive drive aspect of an elite QB can not be discounted. Of course you must have the physical skills necessary, but you also must have that huge competitive drive, determination and work ethic. Just look at guys like Brady, Manning, Brees. All of them have these traits.
-
Oh sure...if not for those darn Buffalo Bills, JP Losman and Trent Edwards would have had stellar NFL careers. Glennon looks like a very poor NFL QB prospect. This year's Blaine Gabbert.

Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
1billsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Having his head coach as our head coach now gives the Bills "the book" on Nassib. He better than anyone will know whether he's worthy of the #8 pick, that he's a franchise QB who isn't a project and will be good right away...or whether the Bills should rather take a stud defensive player instead at #8. As for Nassib, I don't know how many people have done this but his entire game throws are on youtube. They're all condensed so that you can watch all his throws in 7-10 minutes. I did this yesterday and suggest Bills fans to do the same if you want to have an informed comment on Nassib. My take after seeing 4 games this way is that he does a lot of things well. He's not a one trick pony big arm guys like Glennon or Bray. Nassib's receivers dropped a ton of passes from the games I saw as well. Is he worthy of #8? After watching the videos and knowing Marrone's our coach now, I wouldn't have a major problem because I would have to believe that he thinks Nassib has Drew Brees potential level of talent. He also must have the will and desire that the elites have to want to be the best. Marrone surely knows this about Nassib as well. -

I thought that at first, then went and looked at about four games of Nassib's from 2012 and came away impressed (Rutgers was the one game that he looked bad). It's not that he's great at one thing, but he seems like he's good at a lot of things playing QB. I'm not saying he looked like Drew Brees, but he gave me the impression of a Brees type QB. To me, he looks like he could be a potential franchise QB if he put in the time and dedication to become one. I'm thinking his stock could very easily rise into the first round after looking at the videos I just saw. Would he go #1, no way. But I could see him rise enough to eventually get consideration from the Cards at #7, Bills at #8, Jets at #9 and Tampa Bay at #13 (HC doesn't seem to like his QB). Once teams without QBs see that this kid does a lot of things very well and they are in the market for a starting QB, then all bets are off. Once he gets in the back range of the first round one of the teams up front will probably pull the trigger and draft him much higher than expected. -
Bills hire Doug Marrone to be Head Coach
1billsfan replied to sven233's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Didn't he turn around the horrible football program at your school? Wasn't he being interviewed by almost all of the NFL teams with head coaching vacancies? Who was the slam dunk head coach you wanted? I'm thinking that you probably wanted Lovie Smith. A guy who has so far proven that he's only good for having winning teams with good defenses and horrible offenses. Doug Marrone is new and no one knows whether he will be a great NFL head coach, Smith will never be a great one. That's been proven. -

Actually, let's hope he's more Payton and Parcells than Levy. I really like this hire. Lovie and Whiz would always be thought of as Bears and Cards respectively. While both are good head coaches, neither are thought of top head coaches. This is what's great, we just may have hired a great NFL head coach. He comes approved by both Payton and Parcells, and I was worried that Marrone or Horton would be today's version of the Payton or Fox who we foolishly passed on years ago. -
Chip Kelly HC! (possibly for the Browns)
1billsfan replied to 13player's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Chicago at least gives a decent effort in trying to be competitive. Arizona does not. I'm not a huge supporter of Whisenhunt, it's just my opinion that the guy would have done just as good of a job in Chicago as Lovie Smith did. Both are good enough to get their teams into the Superbowl and both would know the Bills job was their last stop on the HC train to achieve their ultimate goal of winning one. -

Because a high ranking member of the Bills' FO has a long history and relationship with Whisenhunt. So it would only make sense that given both coaches are even in terms of head coaching skills (which I believe they are) that the Bills would hire Whisenhunt in a second over Lovie Smith. Put yourself in Whaley's shoes, are you hiring someone you don't know much about or the guy you've known for a long time and who's equally qualified? It's that simple. Smith doesn't move the needle enough to hire him over Whisenhunt. -
The thing I don't like about Lovie is that he seems like a quiet, non-verbal leader. That's fine if you're name is Bill Belichick, but he's the exception IMO. After Jauron and Gailey, I want a dynamic change of approach. I want Kelly or Horton. Someone energetic. Why have Harbaugh and Carroll had so much success so quickly? A big part of it is that charged up their players and franchises with their energy. Today's players who grew up with the constant stimulation of video games, ipods and iphones have a hard time staying interested for a three month stretch if they alone are the ones responsible to stay motivated. I'd really like Smith as my DC, but I just don't like him as a head coach in the modern NFL world.

Being an NFL head coach is a young man's game. Guys like Tom Coughlin are the exception. The head coaches who win Superbowls are generally the younger ones who have that hunger and drive to achieve that goal. Holmgren is a bored, ex-head coach who's just looking for something to do and be relevant again. The guy's been retired, he wanted to become a GM, now he wants to be a head coach again. Please, Holmgren is NOT what we are looking for. We want a hungry guy who wants a championship.
-
If Horton is a great NFL head coach who just hasn't been given the chance yet, then he'll be a fit no matter which franchise gives him that chance. The NFL is mainly a parity league that's only separated when a team has much a better QB and/or a much better head coach. I'd be excited if the Bills felt he's ready and make him the head coach. If after the interview they were unsure he's ready then obviously there's a good chance he won't be the choice. I don't think "fit" enters into it as long as he's willing to stay with the 4/3 defensive scheme. He clearly stated that he will delegate to his coordinators.

Just like the QB position, you don't know whether any coach is NFL head coaching material or not until they are put into that position. So the options are picking the safe, yet somehow lacking retread head coaches in Whisenhut or Smith...or going with the untested, yet new and exciting Horton or Kelly. I just like my chances better with the exciting untested guys. Today's players are probably a lot more easily distracted than in previous generations. I get the feeling their brains shut off a lot quicker with the strong, silent, old school types (see Gailey, Jauron). Energetic guys like Thomlin, Harbaugh and even Carroll (even though he's older he has a youthful energy) get the most from their teams throughout a long 16 game season. I think that (along with very good coaching) is what you hope to get when choosing either Horton or Kelly.
-
I think Bills fans are just tired of the normal, bland, "old school" guys like Whisenhut, Smith, Gailey, Jauron ect. I know that I feel the want and need for the Bills to go with the new school, new generation aspect that both Horton and Kelly bring to the table. The Bills were exciting the last time they were relevant, I think that that's the direction to go this time.

Chip Kelly HC! (possibly for the Browns)

This reminds me of the type of question that's been posed to every innovator in American history. I'm sure someone at some point said to Steve Jobs...a personal computer? Why would someone need that? -
As with the head coaching search, there are drawbacks to every college draft eligible QB you can mention for who'd they consider drafting in rd 1 or 2. I'm not getting into the name calling or mocking other people's QB favorites because it literally is a crap shoot unless you have a "slam dunk" Luck or RGIII available when you draft. I personally really like the upside and potential of EJ Manuel. Is he a boom or bust? Yes, but I'm not looking for an above average talent like Andy Dalton. I'm looking for a potential elite QB, and Manuel has the athletic skill set to be just that. I kind of get a Steve McNair franchise QB vibe from him. One thing I found out about Manuel is that just before the season started he learned that his Mom had breast cancer. Considering that he had a good and productive season, that tells me that there's a good chance he's mentally strong. With the exception of the Florida game when he broke down on the field when his Mom came out to greet him on senior day. So maybe that had an impact on his bad performance that day, but he is still a college kid and that is totally understandable to get caught up like that under those circumstances.

From what I understand they are going to interview McCoy. So there's the chance of a "Mike Thomlin" moment where they get blown away by either someone like McCoy or Horton and hire them. However, they do know Whisenhunt very well and he does check a lot of boxes as far as having the experience of being an NFL head coach who turned around a long losing team's culture and bringing them to a Superbowl. The relationship that they have with Whisenhunt is probably a huge factor in this. But they still do have the option of picking an unknown if they sense that they are a "hidden gem" coach waiting to be discovered. Guys like McCoy and Horton.

If EJ Manuel is awful then I want me some of that awfulness...LOL He looked very good last night and as of right now I still think he should be considered for the Bills pick at #8. I still don't know what people don't like about him. If connecting on 68% of your passes is horrible then I'd like to hear which QB you'd like for the Bills and who's so much more accurate than Manuel.
