overwhelming majority of fans want Sherman
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Hawerchuk10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No I understood. That's what I was implying. Based on Marv's quote, they will decide who to choose regardless of how easy or hard sell it will be to the fans. Ralph's position though is slightly different that Marv's as he does have a bit more at stake than Marv with regard to fan acceptence. Marv will make the exact same amount of money whether fans are happy or not. Ralph can lose money if fans are pissed. In the grand scheme of things the amount he'll lose is small though. -
Maybe the Bills haven't hired anyone

I believe there's an edict in place from the NFL, that no team is allowed to name coaching changes over the weekends while playoff games are going on. The thought is, they want all talk around the NFL centered on the games only, not being diverted as to who was just named coach -
Are we ever gonna pick a coach?

True but also pure speculation that they did pay him. If the Bill's did pay him, then we would be inline for some type of compensation. I'd imagine we may have given him some small amount of money, maybe health insuance till he found another job? If the Bill's gave him anything other than "pocket change" I think we would be owed something, but I doubt we are owed. He did get a $1 mil a year for past two years. Maybe he's better at handling money than he is a coaching, and has enough saved up to live comfortably till he found another job. Worse case, he is living in NY, home of easy food stamps!

overwhelming majority of fans want Sherman

I've been wondering, have the Bills been monitoring sites like this and looking at fan reaction? Do they care? Normally you'd say the Bill's should pick whomever they feel is the best man (or woman) for the job. But considering the short leash most fans are giving the Bill's right now, you'd think they'd want to do something to ease the fans concerns. Season tickets are important and I'd think they'll see a bigger dropoff in sales if they go with Jauron. Ralph stated there was no budget for picking the coach. Again hiring Sherman will support that statement. If I recall, didn't Marv in the past make some type of quote, "If you start listening to fans, soon you'll be one"?? The difference I see between the two is, if they give Sherman the job, I think the fan's will give him a bit of a break next year if they start losing. If they give it to Jauron, I doubt there'll be much of a honeymoon. If they start out 2-6 everyone will rip them and start staying away form the games. If they pick Sherman, we'll never know if they picked him cause they felt he was the best person or because of fan reaction. If it's Jauron. you will know they don't care about fan reaction, or are oblivious to it. In todays internet world, I'd more think it's that they don't care. -
I think that was part of the settlement deal between Ralph and MM. From what's been said, it sounds like Ralph gave him an unconditional release, he could go anywhere to coach anytime, but the Bill's didn't pay him anything either.

The only reason to hurry is if you're worried about losing out on a DC or OC. But again those aren't likely to fill to quick till the last coaching slots are filled. The nthings wil lcascade downward. If they hire Sherman, a good chance Bates comes too. So then have filled on coord slot. Then they just need to work on OC. And even without, they have the nucleus of the offensive staff in place. Plus Sherman is from offensive side, so again not too bad there. It would be hard for another team to offer April a promotion other than assistant HC/special teams, so not too nervious there either. I believe there's an edict in place from the NFL that says, though shalt not hire coaches or call a press conference while playoff games are going on or will be struck by lightening. Over the weekend they want all attention on the games and nothing else. So essentially no one can hire anyone till Monday. Not that they can't have a deal in place, but no actual hires announced.

What's happened to Fassell?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Ed_Formerly_of_Roch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah but Fassell did take a team to the Super Bowl. Thats a little bit more to put on a resume than MM has to go on. For a coach that 5 years ago took a team to the Super Bowl and other years, made the playoff, and not not even mentioned is a surprise. Particually when you consider how teams tend to recycle through the same coaches repeatedly. -
Boy did his star fall fast. Not just the Bills, but no one is talking to him. What happened to him? Did those pictures of him and the sheep at the combines get out?

When did Payton first interview in NO? thought I read someplace he had a second interview on Monday?? OK on Friday, the Bill's asked for permission from Dallas. Payton may have already been in serious negociations with NO, so told the Bill's he wasn't going to bother going there unless this fell through. Considering how mostly everyone has ripped the Bills last two coaching hires for not having been a HC prior, maybe that was why they weren't in a hurry to interview someone young enough to be Ralph's grandson. Plus NE didn't lose till Saturday night. Certainly the Jets could have been in a position prior to the weekend where their focus was on Magini and were just waiting for NE to lose. Clearly MM quitting last week, with a GM on the job one week, left the Bills somewhat un-prepared. Maybe that was why they wanted to bring MM back as they felt it would be strained to bring in a new HC quick enough.

Jerry Gray is rather presumptuous
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to OnTheRocks's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thats true you're right, that technically the Bills would be owed something. However I still doubt it would not be even a 7th round draft pick considering the Bills have kind of told Grey they don't want him back. I think the NFL would step in and not allow anything. Personally I believe the Bills are keeping him under contract as a favor as it looks better for him whe ninterviewing to not say he was just fired as DC. -

Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to OnTheRocks's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I believe once the Bills gave him permission to look elsewhere, they're giving up and compensation. And if Herm Edwards a HC is only worth a 4th rounder, I'd say you'll be hard pressed to get better than 10th rounder for Grey. Oh wait, there are only 7 rounds! I t seems to thatI've read something that the NFL is trying to crack down on these coaches for compensation picks. They didn't like what Oakland got from Tampa and they'll review any future deal. That being said, don't count on getting anything for a DC you've told to look elsewhere. -
Watching the SU game on ESPN, and saw it announced there too.

Why Ralph Wilson isn't in the Hall of Fame
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Gambler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What has George Young done other than with the Giants? Yes he was good there for about ten years?? I wouldn't think thats nearly as much as Ralph has done over 45 years -
When Brady got that call, he was a nobody, with what one playoff win, or was it zero?

If Bills dont get Mario Williams...

So if it's less risky for the Bill's to trade down, why would another team offer us anything good to move into our position in the draft? -

Took Him a Week to Decide to Walk Away
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to grog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When you consider that there are only 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL and considering his record after two years isn't going to put him high on the wanted list to get another head coaching job, you can also say it took a hell of a lot of guts for him to leave. His convictions were more important than money! I think the Leo Roth article in Fridays D&C is the closest thing to the truth as to why he left. And quite frankly, if that's why he left, which tends to sound logical, I can't blame him, and can understand how/why it took him a week. The more he thought about it, the more he realized this just wasn't right. link to Roth article
