Thanks Rockpile I definitely get excited about good sci-fi

That movie horrified the SH*t out of me when I first saw it...that scene where you're in the classroom, but outside the window you can see the paratroopers landing...and they they COME UP TOWARD THE WINDOW, BREAK THROUGH INTO THE SCHOOL, AND THEY START SHOOTING AND KILLING AND SHOOTING AND KILLING SOME MORE!!!!! :o It was pretty intense for a kid...

Wow, I could not disagree more! While I prefer a more balanced climate, preferably the mid-atlantic region of the US, I LOVED the Autums back in rochester when I was growing up there. From when the weather starts breaking in April, through the summer, there is little to complain about. But when you get into Sept, Oct, and even the first part of November, it's the BEST time to be in WNY, IMO! I've become a bit of a homebody in my old age, but growing up in WNY was great...if you have ANY desire to be outdoors, there is a ton of fun stuff to do during the Autumn back up that way.

I remember an NFL films video about the Bills during one of his seasons here, and he was walking toward the tunnel telling a player on the other team how great it was playing for the Bills...Bledsoe can suck it.

You never tire of City of God?? That's a pretty rough film to digest!

lol, yep, I saw "sci-fi" and "aliens" in the Amazon description, and I immediately knew you were spot on with your suggestion I added to my wish list...glad to see it's also available on Kindle in case I get one of those before I have a chance to read the physical book Geesh, iTunes has EVERYTHING man! lol I just got some new headphones for my iPod, so this sounds like the perfect download. I just better be careful about listenign to it before I go to bed, cause I'll start gettign all caught up in my thoughts that I'll never get any sleep! lol I know a few others would would probably love this guy, so I'll pass along your suggestion to them, as well. I was reading through some of the comments under one of Keller's books on Amazon, and someone said he didn't like it because "reason and faith are mutually exclusive". I could NOT disagree more, so I commented in return. This was one of the very few negative reviews of the book (most of them were resoundingly positive), but seems to me this guy completely missed the point entirely. LOL, even better! It's really interesting to me how many of you guys are citing the works of S.King. The last King book that I read was "Eyes of the Dragon" back in the 80s...looks like I've missed out on a LOT of his stuff over the past twenty years, though! I just read the description for a book he has coming out in November called 11/22/63 where the protagonist goes back in time to try and stop the Kennedy assassination...count me in for that one!!

haha, always gotta make time for TBD Wow, thanks man! I've never heard of this guy, but just browsing through some of his stuff and the feedback on Amazon, it seems he's exactly the sort of Christian author I would enjoy. I like CS Lewis because he approaches it from a cerebral point of view. I don't particularly care for the "rah-rah, YAY!!" type of Christianity...I prefer to think about my faith and reason through it. From that standpoint, CS Lewis was like crack, cause that's exactly what he did. I'm excited to give this Tim Keller guy a look...thanks again! Definitely...I have a really nice library in the town I live in...would be good to go check it out since I've never been there.

It's funny how our conceptualizations of things change as we get older. I don't know if it's because I grew up with a father who was Mr. Corporate America, but as a kid and a young adult I used to always view corporations as "genius". They always made the right decisions, the people in charge were there because they always knew what to do, etc. It's sort of like how I viewed politics. The President was always on top of the problems we were facing and whatever problems came up they'd take care of. No big deal. I suppose the more appropriate term for it would be "ignorance", but I think we're all at risk for beign ignorant until we develop a good, healthy sense of cynicism lol. Anyway, just reading about your take on the decisions that Borders made, it's just funny to realize how our understanding and assumptions change. Nowadays it makes more sense to assume that the powers that be are more likely to be futards than they are geniuses, and I guess your example is case in point of that.

Ahh, okay....that makes sense. I don't know many Rafa haters

I agree, and honestly I'm really surprised that they are going under. It really seemed like Borders and B&N had almost created their own culture among their patrons. People would meet there for a first date, maybe grab a coffee...others would take part of the day and just go read in one of their big comfortable chairs that they had dispersed throughout the shelves...I really started to get caught up in all that, myself. I loved going to the bookstore, even if I had no idea what I wanted...just enjoyed being in that environment. It's too bad that modern technology and things like brick and mortar shops have to be mutually exclusive at times. I would pay good money to watch you go up to a Borders clerk and ask them if they carried the naval appropriations book LOL

He's really worked on his unforced errors...that was killing him in previous tourneys, but he's overcome it like a champ. Also, he's prob the only player who can not only keep up with Nadal in terms of stamina, but probably outlast him. He's the best conditioned player on the tour right now, and that makes him even more dangerous. On top of all that, the guy seems to let his personality come out at times, and he's a pretty entertaining dude...that's one of the things I've always disliked about federer...Fed seems to always be a bit of a girly man, and when he doesn't play well he can tend to whine a bit. I'd respect him more if he would pull a Johnny Mac once in a while and start yelling at the ump or throwing his racquet lol. A room full of Nadal haters??? Dang!! lol
-
LOL, dang man, what's with the anti-Nadal stuff? I've always found him to be a pretty humble guy, even though he probably has plenty of reason not to be. I do agree about Djokovic, though. He's been on the verge for a while, just coming up short at a few key times. But he's really turned the corner and taken hold of the top spot in the game. I thought he was going to regress the other day against Federer, but he pulled it out in great form and was clutch in the latter part of the fifth set. He's got a very solid all-around game and he's a threat to win on any surface. Congrats to the Djoker!

Definitely...even just here in ATL there are a few TBD'ers that at some point I know I'll hang with. The good Doctor, Dr Dankenstein/Darustein, only lives a "hop, skip, and a jump away", as they say here in the south Maybe so, but at least you haven't lost your charming and engaging personality Movie and music threads are some of my favorite ones to follow on here...honestly, I've expanded my music collection (and my taste!) significantly just from our discussions here. A few TBD'ers have even been cool enough to burn me a CD of some of the music that was discussed (e.g. DAvid Bowie, Rush) in the threads but that I wasn't familiar with at the time. I thought that was way cool for them to do that -
I just started and finished watching Breaking Bad

I agree...great episode this week -
I don't know if any of you guys have ever felt this way, but I remember when I was at Temple University back in the late 90s, and I walked into their library for the first time. To be immersed among all those books, periodicals, magazines, journals, etc, etc was both surreal and humbling. It's the same thing with a large book store. When you think about the pure IMMENSITY of the number of writings available to us, it's just staggering to think about! Pick any genre, and you have thousands upon thousands of options available to you. The written word is a powerful and beautiful thing, and this is one of the reasons why I get mad when I find myself not making the time to find another great book to read.
