1. i read somewhere that villarial has some intestinal tract infection of some sort. so i think he'll be out for another week or so. Itula Milli, TE of the seahawks had something similar in the beginning of the season. and as someone else posted earlier here, that may be the reason why villarial was "winded" as mularkey put it.

Oh no!!! Not a villareal infection!

  2. Think of it, we had only one guy on the line Sunday who started for us last year.

Essentially, we had a Bears cast off, a Jags cast off, Teague, a rookie and a nobody manning the fort on Sunday.  At that, we still managed to pull off a win with, admittedly, plenty of help from the fins.  Hard to hold on to the ball with flippers I guess.

What pisses me off, though, is that the 'Phins' o-line essentially is in the same shape as ours, and yet they managed to pick up our constant blitzing and give Ferotte time to throw (why Gray insisted on sticking with the blitz, which obviously wasn't working and allowed the Dolphins to score quickly, is another frustrating organizational mystery). Yet, our line couldn't stop a 4-man rush, let alone any kind of stunt or blitz in the second half yesterday.

And, I'm tired of the excuses. Every team suffers injuries at o-line. Look what the Packers' second and third-string linemen did to the Saints' front seven yesterday - the same front seven that gave our first-stringers fits. That's the best Jerman could play against the team that cut him? CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BAD MACFARLAND MUST BE!?

I'm going to have to point the finger at coaching this time - there is no reason why the protection continually fails, and technique remains so sloppy. We can't play out of two tight end sets like other teams?? We can't coordinate between our backs and linemen to pick up blitzers? Our tackles can't shuffle sideways quickly enough to stop ANY defensive linemen on ANY teams?

Why do other teams do this stuff with such ease? It can't just be differences in talent. I refuse to believe that every other team's rookie 6th-round pick is better than our heralded free agent veterans. Someone or some folks aren't doing their jobs, and if I had to guess, I'm going to point to, in this order: Tom Clements, Jim McNally, whoever the hell our RB coach is, and Donahoe. I'm tired of seeing such a mess out there - get it together, get everyone on the same page, or get out of town.

  3. I don't understand why anyone on this board would be upset with Holcomb starting on Sunday?  Why is MM such a bad coach for doing this? I would do it in a heartbeat.  Losman is overmatched right now.  We will LOSE to Miami if he starts.  He does not do enough with his legs right now to offset his horrible passing number and inaccuracy.  We still have a shot to win 9 or 10 games if the team gets on a roll.  If Holcomb fails, then JP will be right back in there and get his precious experience.  JP is the future. DOn't worry about his confidence, let's just win a few games and keep our opponents honest with some semblance of a passing threat.

    Agreed.

I think so many people are upset because this organization told them to go out and spend their money on season tickets, etc., because we were told Losman was ready to start. There is a feeling that we've been somehow hoodwinked by TD (again). I understand both sides, but TD was doing his job, and MM will be doing his job when he starts Holcomb on Sunday.

  4. JP Losman, with his limited experience and poor play, is in NO position to dictate to the coach. He needs to do what he is told, collect his huge salary, and shut up.

    466615

Any other position on the team, and you might be right. But not QB - a QB can't be successful if he doesn't have his teammates' confidence.

BTW, if that Clayton report is true (that Holcomb is in fact the starter), MM fugged this up bigtime by not just announcing that this afternoon. I'll say it again - Losman's confidence is too important to be toyed with for the sake of trying to fool Saban. Stick to the X's and O's, Mularkey, not the gamesmanship. Oh, and while you're at it, RUN THE GODDAMN BALL.

BTW, for those of you who haven't seen this, would you start a quarterback who looked like this:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=251009002

    Didn't think so...

  5. Why couldnt he just tell the team and JP, "Listen, JP, I promise you you're starting. Kelly is getting a couple reps this week with the first team. We'll keep you from having to answer all the questions so you can concentrate on getting ready for the game. But you're starting. We'll make the Dolphins prepare for both."

    466608

Because any QB with any rocks whatsoever would say back, "That's bullsh__ coach, if I'm the starter, let me come out and tell everyone and the team that, so there aren't any questions."

  6. Holcomb will NOT start Sunday.  Mularkey pulled JP from his usual Wednesday press conference because he didn't want JP potentially blowing-up Ryan Leaf-style after the 20th question about how it would feel to be demoted/how it felt to me benched the last 2 games/how hard is it to lose/etc.  Mularkey said that nothing has changed since Sunday, when he said JP would remain the starter.

    466593

    Wrong.

(Hmm... we've got a real Batman versus The Riddler thing going on, you and I...)

  7. HOLCOMB WILL START

    says Coach Tuesday.

Why? Because otherwise, MM would've announced today that JP was starting, and wouldn't have pulled JP from his usual Wednesday press conference. This is OBVIOUS. You who think that MM is simply trying to keep the 'Phins guessing are ridiculous - this is the QB we're talking about, and Losman's confidence is too important for those kinds of mind games.

I'll say it again - HOLCOMB WILL START on Sunday. Read the tea leaves, people.

  8. Mostly because we don't have the players to play a 3-4.  Other than that, we should switch.

    465098

I'm not sure that's true. We have more depth at LB than at d-line, especially at tackle. Plus, as I've said before, the 3-4 is more cap-friendly and cost-effective, because linebackers are cheaper than the stud linemen required to have a solid 4-3. If you want a front seven that consistently creates pressure using a 4-3, you need to have at least one STUD lineman (usually DE), and perhaps more. By contrast, you can create pressure more easily with a 3-4 using situational players.

I'm all for making the switch, obviously not mid-season, but next season for certain.

  9. Somehow this reminds me of the argument during the offseason to start JP over Drew: "He couldn't possibly be worse than Drew, right?"

Guess what...no matter how bad things may look, there is always worse.

    464453

I'm just trying to think proactively, unlike 75% of this Board that seems content to find different ways of saying "I told you so" and "We suck."

  10. I for one didn't think the o-line played poorly last week, and didn't understand what you were all talking about. Man, did that change this week. What a bunch of stiffs. And the key problem seems to be the Teague-Villareal combo during pass protection - they got toasted a couple of times against Atlanta, and I chalked it up to Rod Coleman being on top of his game, but it happened too often against the Saints - now it's a trend. Villareal, unfortunately, has left the building - it's one of those unplanned-for things that happens to a team, where they realize that one of their key components just aged suddenly during the offseason, or whatever. Whatever it is, Villareal can't pass protect anymore, and Teague is having similar problems (never seen his technique this poor, it's amazing). Anyhow, here's what I suggest:

    1) If Peters is ready, make him the LT. Big "if," but he showed me enough during the preseason that I would try it.

    2) Move Gandy to LG - this is NOT because he's been playing poorly, he hasn't - he's actually been our most consistent lineman. But, he has a guard's body, and should be an upgrade over Villareal in pass protection and at least as good in the running game.

    3) Put Duke in at center - this one is tough, because Preston has been inconsistent when he's been in there. But, it has to happen sooner or later - and by the looks of Teague, we need some youth and strength at that position.

Again, just a thought, something to provide a "spark" as everyone is saying. The line would look like this:

    Peters-Anderson-Preston-Gandy-Iron(!) Mike
