1. This is NOT the "same old thread" that's been circulated here, because (i) no one has suggested this, and (ii) things have changed now that TD has said publicly (through Mort) that Bledsoe has to take a paycut to stay in Buffalo (which means, obviously, that he'll be the BACKUP for next season - folks, it's OBVIOUS).

Bledsoe has simply taken too many hits to be effective in pressure situations. Two talented teams have now given up on him to lead them. Coaches that were brought in to install an offense to protect his weaknesses have now given up on him. Parcells doesn't want him. Drew himself told AVP after the second Pats game that he might want to hang it up because he wasn't enjoying it anymore (he changed his mind after the winning streak that followed, but who knows after the Pittsburgh game)?

The time has come to hang it up, old horse - go out in style, say you've had your fun and it's time to move on and spend time with the family. Don't wait for that next concussion, that next QB controversy on Team Number Three... just call it.

  2. Could be released on March 1st if he doesnt take a pay cut. I like TD playing hardball. Also said suitors are lining up for Travis, like the Cards, and it will take a 2nd rounder for him. Don't know if these have been covered, I've been away.

This is GREAT news, but, does TD have any leverage? Cutting Drew would be disasterous to our cap situation, no?

Ali G’ character causes near riot at rodeo

Crowd turns ‘downright nasty’ after ‘Borat’ garbles national anthem

Updated: 1:28 p.m. ET Jan. 13, 2005LONDON - British comedian Sasha Baron Cohen escaped a near-riot at an American rodeo while filming his satirical “Da Ali G Show.”

According to a report in the Roanoke (Virginia) Times, a man who was introduced as Boraq Sagdiyev from Kazakhstan — in reality a Cohen character named Borat — appeared at the rodeo over the weekend after organizers agreed to have him sing the national anthem.

After telling the crowd he supported America’s war on terrorism, he said, “I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards ... And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq.” He then sang a garbled version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The Roanoke Times reported that the crowd turned “downright nasty.” One observer said “If he had been out there a minute longer, I think somebody would have shot him.”

Cohen and his film crew were escorted out of the Salem Civic Center and told to leave the premises.

“Had we not gotten them out of there, there would have been a riot,” rodeo producer Bobby Rowe told the paper. “They loaded up the van and they screeched out of there.”

It is not the first time Cohen has wooed controversy with his show, which airs on HBO. In one episode last year, Borat sang an anti-Semitic song called “Throw the Jew Down the Well” at a country music bar, prompting protests from the Anti-Defamation League.

Producers of the Ali G show, Talkback Thames, were unavailable for comment.

  4. I think the key to this whole thing might be the Jets, believe it or not. From what I've heard, now they're leaning towards trying to keep LaMont Jordan. I think he's the Raiders' first choice (they tried to get him this past offseason, and is the perfect back for Turner's system). If the Jets find a way to keep him (franchise tag? - they might with Abraham's latest antics decide to franchise Jordan instead), then the Raiders may come crawling for Travis... otherwise, I'm not sure what the market would look like:

    1) No chance we give him to them - plus I think they'll target Shaun Alexander.

    2) Seattle - I think they end up with Marshall Faulk somehow

    3) Arizona - they already have a "pounder" (Shipp) - they'll likely trade for a speed guy (Michael Bennett)

    4) Tampa Bay - Henry ain't the right fit for that offense - no question

    5) Philly - this might be a great fit, actually - they want a "pounder" to spell Westbrook. They'll also like his low cap number for next year. They're shrewd, though - they didn't even give up a #2 for Owens!

Starter trouble: Bills backup Henry wants out

Travis Henry wants out of ...

    By Len Pasquarelli

    ESPN.com

The agent for unhappy Buffalo Bills tailback Travis Henry, who lost his starting job to Willis McGahee during the 2004 season, has received permission from team officials to discuss a possible trade with other franchises.

The permission, requested by Henry through agent Hadley Engelhard, was granted during a meeting with Bills president/general manager Tom Donahoe at this week's practices for the East-West Shrine all-star game. While significant, such a move rarely precipitates a trade, but Engelhard said he has received positive feedback from the several clubs with whom he has already spoken.

"I think there's definitely interest from several teams," Engelhard said. "Here's a guy who has twice rushed for 1,000 yards, is only 26 years old and is a proven commodity. We intend to have further dialogue with some teams over the next few weeks."

Essentially, the move allows Engelhard to shop his client, gauge interest and define a market. He would then report to Donahoe on the franchises with interest in Henry, and the Bills could follow up to see whether a deal could be struck.

With the rapid development of McGahee, the team's first-round choice in the '03 draft, Henry might be deemed superfluous. Donahoe said in his season-ending press session, though, that the Bills want to maintain depth at the tailback spot and that Henry could return for the 2005 season.

"We'll see how it develops," Donahoe said. "I do know this: Travis Henry is a good football player, a good back, and we're not going to give him away."

Engelhard said he does not know what it would take, in terms of compensation, for a team to acquire his client. But he reiterated that Henry is "very adamant" about leaving the Bills and finding a team where he could regain his starter's status. His comments echoed those of Henry, who acknowledged a day after the regular season ended that it is time for him to move on, and that he would not accept a backup role.

A four-year veteran and former second-round draft choice, Henry started the first four games of the season, and five of the first six, before suffering a series of injuries. He was replaced in the lineup by McGahee, who rushed for 1,128 yards despite starting in just 11 games, and then a leg injury sidelined Henry for the final five games of the year.

Henry finished the season with 94 carries for 326 yards and no touchdowns. In the two previous seasons, the former University of Tennessee star averaged 328 rushes for 1,397 yards, 74 first downs and 11.5 touchdowns. A compactly built tailback, at 5 feet 9 and 215 pounds, Henry is a tough inside runner with quickness to the hole.

At the end of the season, Henry contended that he didn't lose his starting job but that it was taken from him.

"It was given away, let's get that straight," Henry said. "It was a difficult year, but things can only go up. I'm just looking forward to getting healthy and doing the things I know I can still do on the football field."

Engelhard declined comment on whether Henry would participate in the Bills' offseason program if he is not traded, but said his client's priority is to play elsewhere in 2005. Henry has one season remaining on his current contract, with a scheduled base salary of $1.25 million for 2005, and Engelhard said the tailback is prepared to sign a long-term extension with any team that acquires him in a trade.

"We appreciate the Bills allowing us to initiate dialogue with other teams, and it could be a situation that benefits both sides," Engelhard said. "As [Donahoe] noted, they aren't just going to give Travis away, and we wouldn't expect that. At this point, very early in the offseason, he is just about 100 percent recovered from the leg injury. And I don't think there's any debate about the fact he is a quality running back."

  6. I think we can all agree that, at the very least, the job is Losman's to take if he is able to - that's why this offseason is so important for him. If he gets the playbook down and comes into camp ready to take control of the offense, no one is going to stop him - the job will be his. I'm really curious how the Kid responds this offseason, knowing that, with a little hard work, he can grab the reigns of one of the more talented teams in football.

  7. Pinback is pretty good.  For that sound I guess I prefer Modest Mouse and Built To Spill's second and third records.  Haven't heard the new one though.

    202611

Since you're from Brooklyn, did you happen to catch Pinback at North Six a couple months ago? Fantastic show, and I loved the venue. IMO Modest Mouse is great - Built to Spill I can't seem to get into. Pinback is more melodic than either of them (but Modest Mouse rocks harder, for sure).

  8. don't you have kids? Go watch em or play with em or something.

Jesus, I'm on here ALOT, but I'm 24, single and do nothing if its not Friday or Saturday.

You're on here about 18 hours a day, EVERY DAY. Go toss the football around. Or if its too cold, go fishing... jeez.

Let's not split hairs here, we're all losers if you think about it...

  9. Iddy Bitty Hint: I don't think AKC is trying to argue that EM is a poor WR here...

    202378

No ****. And thank you for using the word "trying." AKC is trying to argue a couple of things, which might be valid points if he could get out of his own way and articulate them without coming across as an incoherent, pompous assclown:

    1) he's trying to make the general point that stats are deceiving in and of themselves, and can be used to make almost any argument, and

    2) he's trying to argue, more specifically, that the stats I used to refute his argument about our offense's and defense's true performance in 2004 force me to contradict myself, apparently because he's convinced I've somewhere stated that Bledsoe sucks but Moulds doesn't.

Those are the two main points he's trying to get across. And they almost have merit, however:

    1) stats are only deceiving/manipulable if their underlying assumptions, and by implication the purpose they're being used for, are themselves unclear/erroneous. Otherwise, a statistical analysis should be tautological in a sense - it is absolutely true so long as its assumptions are absolutely true. Unfortunately, AKC doesn't appear to understand what assumptions the fellas at www.footballoutsiders.com are using, which is why he's having such a difficult time articulating his problems with their "rankings."

    2) I've never said ANYTHING about Moulds here other than that he doesn't turn the ball over at a rate that would justify his benching. I made that point two days ago - since then, he's twisted it into a hideous monster. If he would just get his head out of his a$$ he'd realize that he's actually hit upon a good argument - that quite possibly, Moulds is overpaid relative to his production. I'd even agree with him if he made that argument, but he's too busy swordfighting with windmills.

  10. Need some help choosing what kind of software to get. Here's my setup already:

    1) Guitar (Hamer Special) w/ midi pickup

    2) Guitar synth/midi controller and USB midi interface

    3) "Guitar Port" (lets me play guitar thru USB port, w/ built-in software effects and different amps, etc.)

    4) Reason 2.0 (great studio-in-one, but can't record live instrumentation - can only import samples into software drum machine and then "loop" them - better for electronica)

What I want is software that will let me record "live" guitar (either thru built-in effects or thru the effects built into Guitarport), and then "score" those recordings and hopefully add in effects/synths from Reason.

Any suggestions? I've heard Pro Tools is good, but I'm not sure what it does (and it's expensive - perhaps I don't need all that?)... oh, and I've tried Google, and I've also tried asking the pothead employees at GuitarCenter for help - no dice. Thanks in advance!

  11. WTF was this line in the story.........

"Even on a team that openly encourages its players to participate in charity activities and community events, Roethlisberger's $18,000 gesture before the Jan. 15 Jets-Steelers game created a positive stir."

What the f&$& kind of team is that? That has to be the most shocking thing I've heard in a while. Man, they take millions from fans every year and discourage the players from giving back?

Just when I can't hate professional sports any more, I read something like this. The day I tune out completely is fast approaching.

It's an existential question. Why do we watch? We don't know these players. They give us nothing more than 3 hours of time a week. When it's over, what have we gained? Are we better for it? Has it truly enriched our lives in any way?

    202254

Now THAT'S comedy... seriously, I teared up...

  12. That's odd- someone posting under your exact name and Avatar was trying to say in another string EXACTLY the opposite thing- that Football Outsider rankings were absolute indications of rankings. I've got to get you guys hooked up- maybe it's one of those Samantha/Serena things?

    202288

Again, not all statistical measurements are the same. I should be billing you for the free lesson here. Their TEAM RANKINGS contain different assumptions than their PLAYER RANKINGS. You'd have known that had you READ THE EXPLANATIONS (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt - perhaps you did read them...)

  13. Stat wise Eddie Kennison and Ashley Lelie are better then Randy Moss and Marvin Harrison is the third best receiver on the Colts

    202287

 YES, in terms of defense-adjusted points-over-replacement (i.e., point production). Not "better," like, who would you rather have on your playground team - or "better," like, if you threw up a ball to all of them, who would come down with it, or even "better," like, who would you cover with your best cornerback. It's just measuring production.

  14. Yes or No- Are the Football Outsiders correct that there were 44 better WRs in the NFL in 2004 than Eric Moulds?

    202276

Again, you fail to understand statistics. Maybe you need to take some Adult Ed courses, I don't know what to tell you. They are correct that 44 WRs had better defense-adjusted points-over-replacement than Moulds - that's all you can say about their WR rankings. You can only explain statistical analyses in terms of their assumptions.

  15. You like to throw a lot of names around, but the subject here is the Football Outsiders service you claim makes you intelligent in football matters. Excuse me if I question that but:

You're saying anyone with a brain accepts your preferred services rankings of Eric Moulds as the 70th, 54th, 55th and 45th best WR in the game of football the past four seasons?

Just a simple YES or NO will suffice- you can pretend it's a really big button you just have to touch!

    202267

NO. I'm not saying that. Are you really this dumb? I'm saying you need to explain what the rankings are. I've posted their explanations. Do you even understand what they are? Or do you just think that anything labeled "rankings" means, "Best Player to Worst Player"?

  16. Not to mention the countless other assumptions AKC's pea-brain fails to acknowledge. For example, by his own argument, the fact that our defense played against inferior offenses should've meant better average field position for our offense, which should have in turn led to over-inflated offensive stats (meaning, our offense was actually OVERRATED by his own assumptions).
