9/11/23 GAMEDAY Week 1 Bills @ Jets MNF Pregame Thread
Einstein replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
I agree that he is not hopeless as a football player. But it's possible that he may be hopeless in *this* system. We drafted him knowing that he has never played a down of zone and then threw him into a zone-heavy offense. And I believe that affected him mentally as well. In fact, during an interview a few weeks ago he said: "I stayed up nights trying to figure how to make plays playing zone" last season. It also appears that the Bills were honest with Elam this off-season about where he was struggling. He mentioned in that same interview that he tried this training camp to put on film that he is getting better on all the areas that "the G.M. and the head coach wanted to see from me". -

Active or not, I think it is clear that the coaching staff is not high on Elam. He is probably the 5th CB after Tre, Benford, Taron, and Dane. -

TBDAHOT 24* Parking! Raiders at Bills Sunday Sept 17th

I will be parking in Lot 2, but look forward to walking over to the TBD tailgate and meeting some of you. -
Agreed. The Dolphins offense has the potential to be lethal and they showed it today. They put extreme pressure on the outside with two speedy receivers in Hill and Waddle. Then when a defense adjusts to bracket the outside, the Dolphins begin to exploit the middle. They played this cat and mouse game with the Chargers all game long. Tua, while not a top five quarterback, has the one skill that is essential in the offense that Mike McDaniels (Dolphins head coach) runs. Accuracy! He is also *just* mobile enough to be annoying. Thankfully, the Dolphins achilles heal from last season showed no signs of being any better. The defense. The addition of Vic Fangio made little difference today, as the Chargers racked up 433 yards of offense. Hopefully this continues.

What I saw today was a very confident QB in Tua and very dangerous weapons in Hill and Waddle. Throwing for 466 yards and 3 TD is no easy feat regardless of who you are playing, and the Chargers had a top 10 passing defense last season and a slightly below average scoring defense. It is very difficult to cover two speedy receivers in Hill and Waddle on the outside without leaving the middle of the field open - which is what doomed the Chargers. With a healthy Tua, the Dolphins are a very potent team. On the positive side, the Dolphins defense looked just as poor as last season, despite adding Vic Fangio, who is a known defensive mind. The defense may be their undoing. The Patriots surprised me the most, and once again showcased how important quality coaching is. The Eagles took a quick 16-0 lead but Belichick made adjustments and the Patriots outscored the 2022 NFC Champion Eagles 20-9 over the final three quarters. I do not believe them to be a threat for the division, but I do believe they could play the role of a thorn in our side during portions of the season.

The Dolphins and Patriots are much better than many give them credit for. The Patriots outplayed the NFC Champion Eagles the final 3 quarters of that game.

I agree. The Jets best d-line (Quinnen Williams) is interior while Pitts best (Watt) is outside. Though that may change this year if Jermaine Johnson breaks out like the Jets hope he will. But if asked to pick between which defense I would want to play, im picking the Steelers over the Jets. The Steelers have a great d-line but the Jets are good to great at all three levels. We have had success against the Steelers defense

Josh Allen is the best weapon in the NFL and he’s not protected.

Week 1 may not be pretty. The Jets have an incredible defense. I wish we had a bit of a softer opening game. -

It has nothing to do with performance. It is the playcall. 3rd and 4 wasn't Frazier. It was McDermott. -
I have mentioned this throughout the offseason, but the defense we have witnessed under Frazier for the past several seasons is Sean McDermott's defense. Perhaps it becomes slightly more aggressive, but fans are not going to see the change that many believe is coming. A buddy of mine is a Panthers fan and told me bluntly not to expect much difference. The defense we had in Buffalo under Frazier is very similar to what they had in Carolina under McDermott. These two pictures say a thousand words. The first is the famous 3rd & 4 from the Bengals game where "Frazier" had our defensive backs play several yards back. The next picture is McDermott's defense from Carolina, in a similar situation, in the redzone, on 3rd and 2. Notice the defense...

No, I didn't. I pointed out that Andy Reid was once known for assembling subpar offensive lines, but this changed when he recognized the need to protect Mahomes after the LV SB. I noted that the inadequacy of his lines could be observed through PFF's evaluations. You countered by arguing that if Andy Reid chose the linemen, the PFF grades were irrelevant. According to your perspective, Reid's decision must be correct. I responded by emphasizing that even great teams make mistakes in signing players. For example, Marv Levy, a Hall-of-Fame coach, signed Derrick Dockery to a contract worth nearly $50 million. Dockery's performance was so disappointing that he was released just two years into a seven-year contract. Even a coach with the credentials of Levy can make a wrong decision, and it doesn't make it right simply because of his reputation. Or if you don't like the Marv Levy example, let's draw an example from Andy Reid himself. In 2009, Reid's Eagles signed Stacy Andrews (RT) to a massive (at the time) 6 year, $40M contract. He was so bad, and so depressed, and so injured that that he only played 2 games - yes, two games - out of his six year contract. He was released a year later. And this was not the only player that Reid failed to adequately judge prior to signing. To quote Bleacher Report, "Reid's inability to make his free-agent acquisitions pay off in the past few seasons ultimately led to the end of his tenure in Philadelphia." link Your mischaracterization of the discussion, and your blatantly false quote, is not surprising. -
This could potentially be a bit misleading because we have a QB that can evade sacks. Allen often turns what would be a sack for many QB’s, into a positive play. For example, Dawkins only allowed 3 sacks last year, but he also allowed 30 hurries and 37 QB pressures. That’s a total of 70 sacks/hurries/pressures. This chart shows how Allen’s sack rate is among the lowest in the NFL despite being pressured often: https://x.com/sharpfootball/status/1692899902039187468?s=46

0:50 into the video you can see Spencer Brown get absolutely obliterated by a linebacker. But yes, Torrence played well. I am excited about him. He is the first piece in rebuilding this o-line. We will need a new Center, RT and LT in the next year or two. -
Hard to imagine that when he has been playing poorly since he turned 28.

This didn't happen.

Chiefs made protecting their franchise QB a priority. - They signed Joe Thuney, a very good G, to an $80M deal in Free Agency. - They signed Jawaan Taylor in free agency to an $80M deal. - They signed Donovan Smith in free agency to a $9M deal. - They drafted Trey Smith. Bills took Rachad Wildgoose several picks before that, instead. - They drafted Creed Humphrey, who is now the best C in the league. Bills took Carlos Basham two slots before that. It's clear that one team has made an effort to put money and draft picks into their o-line. The other hasn't. Now the Chiefs have a line where Mahomes complains about not being able to get hit, and we have a line where Allen will likely have to run around to not get hit.

Understandable. But we are not talking about All-Pro quality talent. We don’t even have starting level talent at several of the o-line positions.
