Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season game 2

Agree on that. Allen bailed for absolutely no reason. -
Cap Dollars - Von Miller or FA OL improvement

That was the rankings for 2 years ago. Last year, PFF had Saffold with one of the worst OL grades in the entire NFL. -

Agreed. Brown got called for holding on the long Gabe Davis catch but holding could have easily been called on Dion too. They were both holding on the play. Pretty sad state of affairs when BOTH of your tackles are holding just to give the QB a couple seconds to throw. -

I genuinely do not understand how McBeane thought we were set at middle linebacker. -

Bad luck is what happens when unpreparedness meets adversity. Relying on an old linemen that was fighting for the 3rd string RT position, and Tommy Doyle, who was awful in the little he has played so far, is unpreparedness. -

My opinion on McGlinchy is that he is an excellent run blocker, which is something we desperately need. He is a bulldozer. This made him a great fit for the 49ers and their strong run game. He is huge (6’8) and is essentially a better Spencer Brown. He is not a great pass blocker but he is significantly better than Brown. My opinion on Oliver is that he is an average DT that has flashes of greatness but can never sustain those flashes. When he isn’t battling injuries, and isn’t flashing greatness for short bursts, he is being pushed around by larger, stronger offensive linemen. He rarely makes key moment stops and never makes game changing plays. He is a slightly above average player that I have never been able to understand fans fascination with. -

I completely disagree. Independent graders (such as PFF), also disagree with that assertion. -
Looking at our options to rebuild the o-line in 2023

@LabattBlue this thread may interest you, considering your current topic of Von Miller vs OL cap dollars. -
Agreed.

I made this point a year ago and was bashed for it. Oh how the turntables turn. Another one that I have regretted since the signing: We gave Oliver, a decidedly mediocre player, $68M. For $3.8M more per year (over 5 years), we could have signed a very good Tackle in Mike McGlinchey. Sigh. -
I understand your hesitation. I really do. I simply do not agree that is significantly more injury risk from playing a couple extra quarters than there is practicing, or conditioning or being in the weight room. The worst injuries are non-contact injuries.
-
I have a feeling that by the end of this season, the Bills will have wished they spent the Ed Oliver money on Mike McGlinchey. For $19M more (over 5 years), we could have had a very good Tackle.

Our offensive line is in rough shape for the future. LT - Dawkins is turning 30 this upcoming year and looks like he doesn't have many seasons left. C - Is a walking concussion and I'm honestly shocked he is even still playing RT - Just horrendous.

True, but there were some opportunities that we unfortunately missed. Orlando Brown Jr, pro-bowl T, went after we would have picked. We decided to trade down. Ended up with Harrison Phillips instead. Brian O' Neill, pro-bowl T, went after we would have picked. We decided to trade down. Ended up with Harrison Phillips instead. Chris Lindstrom, pro-bowl G, went after the Bills picked. We chose Oliver instead. Creed Humphrey, best C in the league, went after the Bills picked. We chose Rousseou instead. There is also free agency over the past couple of years, where good to very good T's were available. For example, Joe Thuney was available. And La'ell Collins was available. And Terron Armstead was available. And Duane Brown was available. And Jason Peters was available. All of these players singed with new teams, and some do have issues (for example, Terron is a walking injury), but they were available. Not sure how Shell retiring is relevant. I don't think anyone, Beane included, was expecting Brandon Shell to start at RT. Beane signed him in the Summer, on a cheap deal, for only 1 year, and he was battling with Quessenberry to not be the 3rd string RT. We can absolutely blame Beane for not adequately addressing the Tackle position. You don't have to be Nostradmus to know that signing an old vet who was fighting to not be the 3rd string RT before is not exactly fixing the position. I know it's just a few series of one pre-season game, but I just do not see what others (and apparently Beane) see in Oliver. When he is not battling an injury, he is remarkably mediocre. He will flash for a play or two, and then get tossed around like a rag doll for half a dozen plays. I simply do not understand why we re-signed him.

If performance didn't matter in pre-season, the starters wouldn't have played. The end result (score) is irrelevant, but how well you play is. It shows where you are at this point in time. -
I get it. You're concerned that more playing time will mean more injuries.
-
Play them the entire game. The injury stuff is overblown. They can get injured in practice, in the weight room, etc. Gabe Davis’ season long ankle injury came during the WALKTHROUGH before the Titans game last year. We saw a team tonight that needs as many reps against real competitor as they can possibly get.

I get what you’re saying, but 2020 Poyer makes that tackle. This is called getting burned. -

Here is the exact quote. You can semantics it all you want but it is pretty clear: “I think the Bengals are better, but I think with all those injuries on the o-line that the Bills have a chance” - Pat Mahomes He felt the Bills needed a bunch of o-line injuries to the Bengals to simply have a CHANCE. Mahomes, at best, thought the Bills were third in the conference. Chiefs > Bengals > Bills. He also did say the Chiefs match up better against the Bills. Which is a nice way to say the Bills just weren’t that doggone good at the time. I was paraphrasing. It was the gist. The Bills were 13-3 but we were a very flawed 13-3. The 11-6 Bills from the previous year would have wipped that 13-3 Bills ass. -

It’s funny - this forum didn’t talk much about that Mahomes comment. So many posters here like to live under the delusion that we were simply unlucky or injured or emotionally depleted last year… but we have a HOF QB saying (paraphrasing) “the Bills just aren’t that good” and no one listened. . -

I expected RT to be an issue. However I didn’t expect Dion to look as bad as he did. -

Kincaid is going to be a problem… for defenses. He instinctively knows how to use leverage. You could see it repeatedly on the slot slants. -

- Dion Dawkins was terrible - Spencer Brown was also terrible - Teams are going to exploit the middle without Edmunds - Ed Oliver was pushed around - Poyer looks like he has lost a step. He looks slow - I’m concerned about Cook in pass-pro. It was only one play but he got stood straight up and the only thing that saved him was the linemen next to him - On the positive side of things, Kincaid is great at using leverage. - Torrence was alright - Shorter is going to make the roster
