A Few Thoughts about the Bears Game, in no particular order
Virgil replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
3rd worst? Is that real? Wow. I had no idea. That’s honestly as scary to me as our offensive performance. Seriously. That’s on McDermott and not very process edit - yup. That’s true. We went from being in the top 10 last year to bottom 3. That’s alarming -

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think we typically have less penalties than our opponent. Our offense finds a way to get negative yards on first down too often, but I equally can’t stash’s Daboll. Either way, it was way worse under Rex. But hey, I’m wrong a lot -
Bill's Offensive Line is the problem. Amazing stat.

What does money spent mean? Mahomes doesn’t make much. Why doesn’t actual performance set the tone? If that’s how much they make, I think we are getting a great value honestly -

You’re absolutely right. What’s sad is that it didn’t even phase me. He was that gun shy with the deep ball that he couldn’t even do it when it was expected. He’s just plain broken -
There are contenders, rebuilders, and dumpster fires. One is taken for granted, on gives you hope, and the other makes you wonder why you do it anymore. As I watched the forums since over the past few weeks and moreso after our last blow-out, I can see posters sway between the last two. I don't have an answer myself personally, but I know it was hard to keep the fire going yesterday. With that.... 1 - Peterman - Someone made a comment that I was surprised how I didn't review Anderson the previous weeks. I knew Anderson was nothing more than a stop-gap who'd had a small handful of practices and isn't part of our future plans. Peterman not only was part of the plan, but he was actually picked to be our season starter. Our team felt strongly enough about him to trade McCarron and let him run our team. As he started the game, I wondered how much his previous performers would affect his overall confidence. It was a mixed bag result for me. Peterman looked downfield often, but rarely took the shot. I think I read that he broke an NFL record for 31 completed passes, but fewest overall yards. The Bears defense baited him into dump off passes to which they closed on quickly. But it was the tipped pass int's and fumbles that really showed where Peterman was at. The frustration, but almost acceptance in realizing that he is just cursed as an NFL starter was all over his face. I applaud his effort to try and shake off his past, but it was clear to me that his confidence is shattered and his performance all season is a scary indication of how our FO evaluates NFL talent. For them to think this was their guy worries me the most about their ability to put together a successful offensive roster. 2 - Trubisky - As we are comparing our rookie Qb to other's, I found myself watching Trubisky to see if he could be one of the QB's of the future. I left the game unimpressed. For every crisp pass he completed, he equally had some passes that I don't think even he knew where they were going. His pick to Tre was an absolute gift. I will say that I didn't realize how well he could run because our defense apparently was terrified of him keeping the ball on the QB option keeper. Overall, I still don't see what the Bears saw in him to give up the capital to move up one spot and I believe his performance this season is a great example of how an offensive coordinator schemes to meet his talent. I know it's dumb to throw stones in a glass house, but I'll pass on the Trubisky train. 3 - Execution - A lot of people are starting to ask why Rex got the Axe in 2 seasons while McDermott seems to be getting a pass. I'm going to both make my point and then counter it. For those with a short memory, the team's execution under Rex was terrible. It wasn't just that we lost, it's that we were heavy on penalties, blowing assignments, and players were leaking their frustrations anonymously to the media. We haven't seen much of that out of McDermott as penalties and blown assignments seem dramatically better. However, in this game I saw glimpses of a team that is starting to give up in the face of futility. The offensive turnovers were rookie mistakes and inexcusable. I almost feel bad for Peterman, who put together one of his better games (that's not saying much) only to have offensive players make stupid mistakes on the field that led to turnovers. For our talent level, we need to be fundamentally sound, and we weren't that against the Bears. The Logan Thomas late hit was a joke and he should have been pulled from the game. 4 - If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise don’t even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, jobs. And maybe your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery, isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance. Of how much you really want to do it. And you’ll do it, despite rejection in the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine 5 - Read-Option Defense - The Bears game reminded me a lot of the Seahawks game we played in Toronto and we got gashed by Wilson. The difference here was that the Bears actually let their tailback run it almost every time. The amount of respect we gave to Trubisky was surprising to me as we gave up solid gains on most of the read options plays. If I'm an opposing offense, I'm adding that play to our scheme when we play the Bills. I don't know if it was an off game or a genuine flaw in our system, but it was alarming. 6 - Special Teams - I think I'm there on getting rid of Crossman. I just don't know what to say anymore about it. But the execution on Punts is mind blowing to me. Not to be old school, but special teams are meant to be seen and not heard. The NFL keeps making changes to the point where I'm surprised that aspect of the game isn't completely eliminated. To that point, we find a way to create a negative gain at least once a game via punts. I'm just over it. 7 - Dawkins - I've been overall impressed with our offensive line performance this season. It was rough to start, but they aren't the dumpster fire we saw in the pre-season. Some are complaining about the holes being created for the running backs, but I think they've done enough for the talent we have. With that being said, Dawkins has made a few eye opening mistakes the past few weeks and I'm wondering if more is going on there. His leg whip penalty was stupid and he has had more than a few guys absolutely blow past him. I'm wondering if it's an injury or something more, but he usually isn't mentioned much in a game, meaning he did his job. 8 - Evaluating Talent - While McDermott won't come out and say it, we saw a lot of starters coming out of the game yesterday without injury. It looks as though the 2-7 record is setting in and we are in player evaluation mode. Teller took some snaps, McCoy was out of the game a lot. McDermott even said they wanted to see what some guys can do. While I don't disagree entirely, the message to fans debating buying tickets for the rest of the season might be affected. I also wonder what message that sends to the players who are looking for reasons to play their heart out. 9 - Another Blow-Out - There's a bunch of stats out there about number of games lost by 15+ points. It's a scary number for a team who's calling card is their passion and commitment to the process. Even in making the playoffs last year, there were at least 3 solid blow-out losses. This is an NFL team with multi-million dollar professionals. Even the worst teams are made up of elite College players. Teams have bad days, but has anyone suffered this many blow out losses in a 2 year span? Even when we were 3-13, I don't think it was this bad. There's something to that and the fact that it doesn't seem to be noticed by the Front Office is an issue. I don't believe in sacrificing someone to appease the masses, but there's more going on here than a simple rebuild and it's in a historic fashion. 10 - Daboll - 10 carries. McCoy, the man our offense is supposed to revolve around got 10 carries. He was quiet after the game and seen despondent on the sideline. To me, this sums up our offense. When we can't figure out how to get our best offensive weapon more than 10 carries in a game, we are doing something wrong. Who on our team is more deserving to make something happen. Then, you have Zay Jones off the field for Pryor. How has our most productive, young WR lost snaps to the guy who's been cut by half the league recently and made crucial mistakes? I'm sorry, but sometimes it's that simple. The guy doesn't know how to utilize our players. On to next week where the board will come crashing down if Darnold lights us up. Go Bills!

Predict the third offensive play for the Bills today

Beat me to it -
I will throw up if this happens. We can’t afford to address our offensive issues in the draft. If there isn’t a guy of value, trade back. It’s a moot point as the new factory of sadness will take Bosa to replace Mack.

I’m glad they said no and assume it means he should see an extension this offseason

Maybe he’s prepping you for another change he’s making. What are your thoughts about tummy sticks? -
This is absolute *****. How does this guy have as many passing touchdowns in one game as our entire offense all season? Tell me again that coaching and scheme doesn't rank above talent on offense sometimes? This is why Daboll has to go

I'll keep saying it. There are worse NFL offensive rosters and they do more with less. -

That's what I get for blindly listening the the commentators I mean....yeah? I just don't expect a lot from the guy. He's exactly what you'd expect him to be and really doesn't do anything special except throw crucial INT's on the last drive. If we allow the game to rest on the shoulders of Anderson, we are in way more trouble than I realized. -
Call me a bad fan, but I was dreading this game all week. I didn't know what outcome I would see, but I knew it was going to be one of two. Either we kept in close for a while and ended up getting blown out, or we would have our typical Bills hope game where we find a way to give it away at the end. Well, it seems that I got a little of both. I'm not going to look for moral victories here as this is a NFL football team and it's all about the Win's and Losses. 1 - Shady - I've said this a few times now, but I think Ivory is the better runner for this team. Yes, Shady is faster and shiftier in space, but he's not getting into space much and his lack of decisive attacks to the line is costing him yards. I'm also noticing more and more that Shady isn't even breaking arm tackles. Ivory may not have the big runs, but he hits the hole hard with a few solid gains. He's a more punishing rusher and is better suited for our offense. 2 - 3rd and 8 before Halftime - This is the punt in the snow game against the Colts last year. I can't understand this play call here. We aren't going to beat the Pats with field goals and 8 yards isn't insurmountable. Well, maybe in this offense. Either way, even with gaining no yards, you're still in field goal range. These are the kinds of plays that make me want to say ***** the process. We want to build a culture and turn some heads, play to win. 3 - The Glorious Hits - I've complained about broken tackles in previous weeks, but not today (minus Stanford's whiff on 3rd and long) Not only were we tackling well, but we were laying the wood on the Pats. And yes, it felt really good. Brady took some shots today, none more beautiful than when he tried to lay a block. But we were all over the place today and punishing the Pats players. These guys showed up today and were fired up. A lot of Patsies are going to need an ice bath later. 4 - He didn't teach you how to win, he taught you how not to lose. That's nothing to be proud of. You're playing not to lose, Josh. You've got to risk losing. You've got to risk everything. You've got to go to the edge of defeat. That's where you want to be, boy - on the edge of defeat. 5 - Wide Receivers - This might be the very first time I'm not calling out the Wide Receivers in a loss. These guys were ready to play as well and Kelvin looked like he actually care out there. Penalty or not, his block was awesome. His catch over Gilmore put a smile on my face. And on the botched snap after Hyde punt return, Zay was wide open in the endzone. These guys were getting separation and making catches. Best game for them all season. 6 - Defensive Line - I've never claimed to know much about the X's and O's of football. I know as much as anyone who's watched games for 20+ years and plays Madden. However, I'm curious about the defensive line alignment. In the games where we seemed to get the most pressure, we'd spread the lineman out or overload one side. In this game, even when the Pats ran and empty formation, we kept the guys tight and centered. As a result, we didn't have a great pass rush today. Even on 3rd and long, we're only rushing 3 and Hogan burns us for a big play. Obviously, the lack of pass rush didn't cost us the game, but I'm curious to understand the strategy behind this. 7 - We've earned it - Watching the game, it's infuriating to see the opposing defenses stack the box and press our receivers because they know we can't throw the ball downfield. On almost every 3rd down play, they dare us to beat them and we failed to live up to it. It's happened all season long and we've brought it on ourselves. But when we do it to other teams, they expose us with a quick pass or break contain. It's beyond frustrating. 8 - Overall Defense - If our defense quit at any part in this game, I would almost understand and give them a pass. These guys had a great game plan with the bend but don't break, and held the highest powered offense in check for most of the game. You can't blame them for getting gassed or realizing their efforts are futile with the lack of offensive support To keep the Pats out of the endzone through 3 quarters isn't a moral victory, it's a straight up victory. Hats off to McDermott for having this side of the ball ready. And I promised I wouldn't write a thought about Milano again, but I may have a man crush. He almost had a game changing pick 6 too. 9 - Special Teams - Hausch and Hyde aside, this unit is making too many mistakes week in and week out. I didn't want to go after the coaching, but someone has to own putting these guys out there. Botches punts, almost fumbles on kick off's. It's just too scary to watch what should be an entry level area of the game. 10 - Daboll - I'm done. If the Browns can fire their offensive coordinator today, so can we. I'm sick of the excuses for this guy. He's accomplished nothing at any level. The fact that there are numerous NFL players that single-handedly have more touchdowns than our entire offense combined is a joke. 9 quarters since we've scored an offensive touchdown. We are absolutely wasting a fantastic defense. I don't care about the talent level. There are less talented teams out there doing more. I watch other games every Sunday and no one is anywhere near as bad as we are. Daboll gets creative for an opening drive, but then just falls apart as the game goes on. Yes, this gets a second paragraph. Negative plays, the inability to counter a defensive scheme, play to our teams strengths, and overall put together multiple drives is more than enough reason. Our offensive line isn't terrible. Our running backs aren't terrible. Our wide receivers, at least today, weren't terrible. How many games do we have to keep watching this dumpster fire before we make a change. I didn't want him hired and I don't take pleasure in calling for a man's job halfway through the season, but there's absolutely zero hope or signs of life. The man needs to go.
