Edmunds was a perpetual disappointment because he was not traded up for and drafted at #16 to be just a decent player at the NFL level. Even more frustrating was that his obvious and incredible physical gifts did not help him make the amount of plays that he was expected to. It was like watching a guy with Josh Allen’s physical gifts play like Jimmy Garropolo. He managed to have the best year of his career while playing on his fifth year option (after two mediocre seasons) and get paid in FA. Glad he walked and we didn’t pay. You do not win football games paying decent players great salaries.

I simply cannot agree that the WR group sans Kincaid is better than 2020 but I hope you’re right. I think “better depth” is really overplayed and overfactored.

I personally don’t agree on the JuJu thing and think you may be overstating his value a tiny bit, but I hear what you’re saying. I would say that the #1 seed thing is a little overblown given that we lost at home. I think the Jaguars may have beaten us in the divisional round last year. Ultimately, I think our chances of winning an SB last year went out the window after the Hamlin incident. Too much trauma for a team to remain locked in (understandably so)

I actually disagree that the records would not be different. I think that IOL is and has been a major Achilles’ heel on this Bills team since 2020. But I hear what you are saying, the lack of a true defensive superstar has also hurt, a lot. Von’s injury was a major blow. He was also available the year prior via trade in which he remained healthy for the Rams run but hey. I will continue to hammer this point forever, which I think you would agree. The biggest difference between the best season of this era (2020) and every other season is that 2020 had the best overall OL and overall receiving group. The defense wasn’t even that good that season and it was still our best year. Now, do I think we win the Super Bowl if we swap classes? No. Do I think we win the Super Bowl if we sign JuJu instead of Crowder? Also no. But it’s a combination of being second or third best in the conference in FA/draft and other major decisions that, surprise surprise, keep us second or third best in the conference.

TEAMS WHO THINK THE MLB IS THE LEAST IMPORTANT DEFENSIVE POSITION DO NOT TRADE UP IN THE FIRST ROUND TO TAKE AN MLB AT PICK #16. THEY DO NOT DRAFT AN MLB #9 OVERALL. This flies in the face of a decade of decisions that McD/Beane have been involved in. This is total and absolute appeal to authority combined with revisionist history. This is like saying "Shanahan doesn't believe in investing heavily in the QB position because he's starting Mr. Irrelevant. Just pretend that he didn't make a blockbuster trade for Trey Lance or another blockbuster trade for Jimmy G. He must not believe you need to invest a lot in the QB position." I have read a lot of your posts Shaw, and they are pretty consistently, "McBeane must believe this is the best thing to do and who am I to argue" combined with a shoulder shrug. And that's fine that you believe that. But the history of how these guys operate is out there. If McDermott didn't think MLB was important, why did he trade up for Edmunds in the first? Why was he the DC on the team who took Kuechly at #9? Are you seriously arguing that they decided MLB wasn't that important coincidentally when they trotted out the worst MLB group they ever have in the NFL? They must be the luckiest GM/HC's in history that their decisions to not invest in positions comes at the perfect time when those positions suck. What's next? McBeane must believe that Tyrod Taylor is good enough to be the QB for the Buffalo Bills because they started him in 2017 and passed on drafting a QB. McBeane must believe that the WR group doesn't need much help because they only brought in Jamison Crowder and the corpses of John Brown/Cole Beasley in 2022. You in particular need to grapple with the fact that just because the people in charge make a decision, it doesn't mean their decision was correct and it doesn't mean they are content with their decision. There is ACTUAL evidence that McBeane weren't happy with the WR group last year. There is ACTUAL evidence that they believe that MLB is an important position. I could easily say "I believe that McBeane are nervous as hell that they misjudged the MLB position since last offseason, and while they made the tough decision to let Edmunds walk, they now wish they probably made other moves to address the position." But because they will NEVER say that in a press conference, you will never believe that's possible.

Over the last 3, now approaching 4 years of clawing at the door, I think this question is important. QB: Equal because Josh rules RB: Potentially best this year with Cook and co. but remains to be seen, the other years were pretty equal. WR: 2020 probably has this group beat, but if Kincaid pops in his WR role, this may be the best year as well OL: Again, 2020 was sneaky a solid OL year, a lot of guys played above their ability, but hopefully 2023 is even better DL: 2022 pre-Von injury, but if Von comes back at his usual level this should be just as good, if not better with Floyd LB: The 2022 had the two best seasons out of Milano/Tremaine in Bills uni's. 2023 takes a big hit this year. CB: 2020 probably has the best CB group by default because Tre was healthy all year. Hopefully Benford outperforms Levi and Tre returns to form S: 2021 probably takes this because Hyde/Poyer were healthy and 2 years younger, but if those old guys can hang on, 2023 should be around that level. STer: We have lost future Bills Wall of Famer Taiwain Jones, but ST doesn't really matter so who cares. What say you.
