Alaska Darin, this a relative of yours?

My dad made it to Lt. Col. before he retired. I remember him telling me that to get to full bird, it required too much glad-handing and ass kissing for him. -

Beware the lollipop of mediocrity. Lick it once and you suck forever. I think they should promote the General. The real measure of his merit is how his men respond to him, and based on what I've read here, that's not something that should even be debated. People can lambast him as insensitive or un-PC, but the politico-military leaders cost more lives in the end than the battle savy hard chargers....the guys who know who they look out for and who looks out for them. -

"God has a hard on for Marines, because we kill everything we see. He plays His games, we play ours. To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls. God was here before the Marine Corps, so you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the corps." -
Anyone who doesn't take advantage of a Roth IRA is nuts. I listened to the address on a variety of Sirius channels on my way home from class last night. All were doing commentary. Talk Right had on Michael Savage and as often as I think he's a wacko, he made some good points. Talk Left probably had the best commentary. A show called Young Turks. Not sure of their names, but these guys gave Bush credit for things they agreed with and bashed him on things they didn't. Probably the most level headed and bipartisan commentary on. They also ripped the Dem who did the post speech rebuttal...Rep from Nevada I believe. Air America was like listening to a bunch of screaming children. Same things ubhockey ran into "Bush is a moron...He's a jerk....etc. etc.." I was waiting for them to call him a "poopiehead." About as constructive as criticism can get. As for SS, a lot of people are taking the platform that the gov't shouldn't mess with it, because it is guaranteed. As someone in their early thirties, all I can say is how can they guarantee money that you eventually won't have? I for one look at SS as gravy if I ever recieve it.

Bingo! My mother is a case worker for the welfare dept. New Yorkers have no idea how much money they dole out to people who haven't even been in the country a year...not to mention those who view welfare their birthright.

How has Masiello, mayor of a sizeable city, never heard of all the conflict surrounding Scientology? Way to keep up on events, and way to educate yourself on a topic of one of your speeches....assdart. -
Hear in Jawja, you can generally get Blue in beer stores and in most grocery stores in some form (6 or 12packs). Blue light is more scarce. The only bars you can really find it at are generally the ones that pride themselves on their beer selection. For all you Atlantans, when I first moved down here ('99) I caught Three Dollar Cafe selling Genny Cream Ale as an English Import I was with some visiting friends from Rochester and we called 'em on it.

I thought so too, but some uppity Beligian corrected me and it's pronounced "who-garden." I'd also recommend some other Belgians, like Leffe, Kwak, Triple Karmel (pretty sure it's Belgian) and Chimay (Blue is the best). As for Coors Light, it's my beer of choice for all landscaping activities and post hockey game.

Watched a great documentary/interview last night called The Fog of War. Covered the life of Robert McNamara, former Harvard professor, President of Ford and of course, Sec. of Defense. McNamara's about 87 now, looks like the crypt keeper, but is still pretty sharp in his interviews. He gives insight into the Cuban Missle Crisis, Vietnam and politics in general. Also, covers his past views on armed conflict, current views and some of the past decisions that give him pride/pain. I highly recommend it. You can rent it at Blockbuster. Here's a review http://movie-reviews.colossus.net/movies/f/fog_war.html

Is there really gay middle-schoolers?...or is it like Chris Rock said.. "Ya'll knew they kid was gay...he just didn't have anyone yet to be gay with." -
Building on this topic... If a company decides not to extend an offer because they see something they don't like on a credit report, do they have to let you know? The reason I ask is that a buddy of mine recently interviewed for a job he thought he had in the bag. He's got great experience, two masters degrees, etc...but the company hired someone with "better experience." He ran into a spot of financial difficulty a few years ago taking care of a sick parent, so his credit is shot.

Notebook questions: who has Dells, who has

I have an IBM T30 for work. If you travel a lot I would recommend an IBM, as in my experience, they tend to be sturdier and take a lot of abuse...but you will pay for it. For personal use i have a custom HP zt3000. I've had it for about a half a year and no problems so far. The nice thing about it is that it has a Hi-Def 15.5" screen and weighs about 8lbs. Also, if you're looking at battery life, consider Intel Centrino technology. I know it's marketed as 'wireless" tech, but Intel was able to create a processor that operates at lower temps, which means less need for heat sinks (size & weight) and a reduction in the amount of time the cooling fan has to run (noise reduction and battery life). I have a Dell desktop with a 2.8mhz processor and my HP laptop with a 1.7mhz Dothan processor runs faster. I have a buddy (MicroE engineer) who works for Intel, who explained the whole deal to me. I was skeptical on the whole Centrino deal, figuring it was marketing BS, but I can watch two DVDS back to back on an airplane and still have battery power left. Also, the battery will last 3hours plus with wireless card turned on. Most laptops at least have an option to get an internal wireless G card, so that shouldn't be a problem. My HP has an internal G card with a push button on/off. -

There's lot of grey area to "visibly intoxicated." It sounds like in this case, the guy clearly was, but we all know people who hold their liquor extremely well...but that doesn't make them any less intoxicated legally. As for built in litigation costs, they're in every product you buy. Unofficially every can of Coke you buy has about 3 cents tacked on to cover lawsuits (most frivilous). I would imagine Pepsi is about the same, and Beer to be quite higher. Also as it makes it way through a distributor and eventually a vendor/bar, they will add their own estimates to cover their assumed legal/insurance obligations. Dangerous items like blow dryers and cordless screwdrivers probably double their costs to cover legal expenses. -
That picture will haunt me for the rest of the day.

I read a book called "The Hinge Factor" a while back. Content was how significant military battles could have had a different outcome if a person had made one decision differently or committed one different action. Some of the theories were a reach, but definitely an entertaining read. If I remember correctly one chapter was devoted to Waterloo. A certain French officer forgot to bring a bag of nails to spike captured cannon. The cannon were eventually recaptured by the enemies (Prussian?...it's been some time since I read up on the subject) and used to fire into the French flank, turning the tide of the battle. From what I've gathered, Napolean was already losing his grip on the war prior to Waterloo, but you never know what might have happened.

104K Miles...V-Tec...if it's a 99-01 Accord, Honda extended the warranty on the tranny to 100K miles (doh!). Mine went at at 92K. From what the mechanic told me, there's a bearing in there that is slightly out of spec, but over time it tends to fall apart and shred the tranny. Honda replaced my whole transmission free of charge.
