DE/"Edge Rusher" Jerry Hughes is still an absolute wrecking ball, but his contract is up this off-season, he turns 31 in August, and there might be some question marks over whether he's really a "McDermott guy" character wise considering how prone he is to getting flagged for 15 yards. The Bills only have 5 guys remaining on the team from before McDermott arrived and Hughes will still be considered in the prime of his career as the season ends, even if it's the back end of his prime. Should Beane and McDermott give Hughes the big contract this offseason? I think they should. Will they? Lorenzo Alexander isn't a DE, but I think he qualifies as "Edge Rusher." McDermott clearly loves the guy, so I could easily see another one year contract next season if he's still producing on the field, but that's definitely a question mark because of his age. Shaq Lawson hasn't been a bust, but he's really been a disappointment for where he was drafted and expectations coming in. Last year wad his best year so far, but with just a month left to decide on whether we pick up his 5th year option, Beane said he hasn't decided: I don't think they pick it up. That's 3 more guys from before McDermott arrived potentially gone and all 3 playing similar positions. So... do we keep one, two or all of these guys or do we go into NEXT year's draft with the glaring DE/Edge Rusher need?

Good point! -
This was the perfect episode for a Friday night after a couple good IPAs while drinking a good glass of Scotch. The perfect upbeat nostalgic episode with very little plot development (though some of significance) with the inevitable Epic battle to come next episode. Soooo... what's the over/under on how many major characters bite the dust next episode?

Wow. Really excited about this pick! What an awesome draft! We've filled our most pressing needs! -

Gore or Yeldon are gone. I don't know how anyone thinks we're trading Shady. What would we get for him? A 5th round pick? Shady will remain on the team for another year. Oddly enough he's one of the team leaders and has a tight relationship with Josh. Personally, I think Yeldon will be gone and this guy is our #3. And we should all be good with that. -

So if that 40 time number is correct... holy crap!!! His size is Hock-like. He's played QB for years, which gives him an added edge. And a 4.51? Considering the 2 WRs he was playing between, being new to the position, and a QB who isn't exactly all-world, it seems understandable that his production is so low. Hard to call a 3rd rounder a Diamond in the Rough, but definitely gotta keep an eye on this guy. -

Yes, they did. If you listen to Beane's pre draft PC, he essentially explains why they trade up. Very simply, it's if they have a guy graded much higher on the board than everyone else left on their board. That's the reason we traded up for this guy and for Ford in round 2, who I'd guess we had a 1st round grade on considering we traded up 2 spots. Shut up... Seriously? Do you have a link? Link? -

Soooo... clearly this is why the guy wasn't one of the top TEs, just trusting the process and assuming McBeane coveted this guy enough to trade up for him and view him as a legitimate long term TE. Measurables actually look strikingly similar to Hock. And he's a converted QB, so that's an added dimension. Any listing of his 40 time? -
RD 1, Pick 9: DT Ed Oliver, University of Houston

I just assume this is here somewhere, but I'll post it anyway: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/winners-and-losers-in-the-first-round-of-the-2019-nfl-draft/ss-BBWiNfR?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=iehp#image=1 Winners and losers in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft by Doug Farrar Winner: The Bills' defensive line: Congratulations, Bills, You got to watch Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver, the best defensive player in this class, fall to your ninth overall pick, and you were smart enough to draft him. Now, let me give you a bit of advice. Don't do what Houston's coaches did and play him at nose tackle 65% of the time. Instead, make him a 3-tech tackle who can flex out to end, and watch him use his generational combination of power, speed, and leverage terrorize the other quarterbacks and running backs in the AFC East and beyond. Comparisons have been made to Aaron Donald, but Oliver reminds me more of Hall-of-Fame defensive tackle John Randle in his furious, unstoppable style. (Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports) -

This had to be expected after Detroit took Hockenson. We needed interior DL. It was our most pressing defensive need. We filled it. Awesome. Expecting Metcalf, Taylor or Irv Smith to be our next pick. -
Happy with the way the 1st round evolved. We filled I think our most immediate and pressing need on defense with Oliver. You can really tell he's really a McDermott guy in terms of character. I really wanted Hockenson, but obviously we weren't given the chance to get him. I expect Smith, Metcalf, or Taylor with our 1st pick in the 2nd round.

Ed Oliver would be a welcome substitute. He was miscast as a nose tackle in Houston’s defensive scheme but is at his best when penetrating into the backfield. Both Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott attended Oliver’s pro day workout at Houston. It was one of just two pro days McDermott attended this year. If Oliver is available at No. 9, he will be tough to pass up. Brugler rates him as the No. 5 prospect in this draft and describes Oliver as an “ideal one-gap penetrator due to his athleticism, instincts and relentless nature, projecting best when he is lined up closest to the football.” T.J. Hockenson, tight end, Iowa It’s fair to question the value of drafting a tight end in the top 10 of the draft, but it’s a lot tougher to question the talent of T.J. Hockenson. When Brandon Beane talked about scouting tight ends, the first thing he mentioned was run blocking. Hockenson is the most complete tight end in this class due to his polish as a blocker and ability to do everything an NFL team will ask him to do. Brugler considers Hockenson to be the No. 6 player in this draft and an immediate starter with Pro Bowl potential. That doesn’t sound like a reach at No. 9. Jonah Williams, offensive tackle, Alabama Opinions vary on Jonah Williams. Some question whether he has the physical traits to play left tackle in the NFL and would prefer to see him play guard or center. However, he didn’t allow a sack at Alabama last season and has a proven track record as a tackle. He clearly offers versatility, and that should only boost his value. Williams also possesses an exemplary work ethic, keeping spreadsheets on his opponents while often watching more film on himself than his opponents. Brugler’s No. 4 overall prospect would fit right in on Buffalo’s remade offensive line.

C'mon folks... I see this has moved, but I'm surprised it hasn't moved more. Hockenson still seems like our most likely pick, to me. Metcalf is a maybe. Fant if we trade down... or trade up from the 2nd with our 2nd pick--but I won't remove him. Jacobs is off the table at this point. If I could replace him with someone it'd be Jonah Williams because I really think we're going offense early.

Hockenson. The way the off-season has played out it's obvious we're drafting a TE 1st or 2nd, and Hockenson is top 10 on most big boards. Plus, McDermott went out of his way to rave about the importance of the TE position for a young QB at the owner's meetings. And who exactly do we have at TE right now?
