The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Buffalo_Gal replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I've often said I would pay up for new Disney animated movie releases I can watch at home, instead of going into theaters. If you have kids + parent, $20 ($30, heck $40 can be) is much cheaper than going to a theater. There are some movies that are just better seen on a huge screen, however. @Deranged Rhino what are you hearing from your buddies in Tinseltown? You had mentioned theaters were in trouble before the shutdown, think they come back? And who needs who more right now? Universal or AMC? -
We did errands today. The driving traffic difference between this week and last week was enormous (much, much more traffic this week). The stores were packed. I am sure it being over 65° outside helped, but I am not certain how much longer people will be down with masks+ social distancing + lock down.

Mexico is sending 'em back too: On Sunday, Mexico's National Institute of Migration (INM) announced the repatriation of 3,653 Central American migrants. The measure comes after growing concern over Covid-19 spreading in INM detention facilities throughout Mexico. Mexico recently has faced issues attempting to deport Central American citizens back to their home countries. Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador closed their borders to citizens and aliens. The INM said: "In the face of the health emergency caused by Covid-19, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Institute of Migration (INM), acts responsibly and safeguards the integrity of the population in the context of migration by seeking to fully guarantee their human rights." Guatemalan nationals were sent back by bus and Honduran and Salvadoran migrants were transported by aircraft to their countries of origin. The International Organization for Migrants administered the flight arrangements to Central America. In March, the INM had 3,579 foreign nationals housed throughout its 65 detention facilities and shelters. As of Sunday, the number had decreased to 106 migrants — a 97 percent reduction in the detained migrant population. </snip> -

I do not normally think any allegations from 20, 30 years ago (or longer) should be allowed to come forward, never mind result in a charge and conviction. There are exceptions of course - police corruption (unwilling to take a complaint against a powerful man, purposely botching a complaint against a powerful man), powerful men being the alleged perpetrators, so women are too scared to come forward at the time, and possibly, children (there is a reason for the possibly as people can remake a memory) although children would need a cutoff before they turned 21 (25, 28, but none of this 30 years later stuff). How in the world can you (generic you) convict in a he-said-she-said situation when our entire criminal justice system is built on innocent until proven guilty? Can you accurately recall what you did last week, let alone what happened 40 years ago? Some say that the event is burned into your (generic your) brain, but there is enough instances of "if you say it often enough, it becomes true" to question long term memories. That is why contemporaneous evidence is so helpful, at least to me. Sexual assault is, unfortunately, more prevalent than anyone would like to admit. Would it be horrible to come forward with a case of sexual assault against someone you know? (Which is much more prevalent than the stranger bopping you over the head and dragging you into the bushes which would result in most women seeking immediate help and pressing charges.) Of course it would be traumatic (in addition to the trauma of the assault). But, there are reasons why we have statute of limitations, and that is not to protect the guilty. I honestly feel sorry for men these days if they have any kind of money or power. It used to be you worried about someone showing up with a kid and claiming it as yours. (DNA helped with the liars.) Now, men need to worry about a sexual assault allegation that is 20, 30, 40 years ago. And, that can impact your freedom, not just your pocketbook. -

When Trump was running, and subsequently elected, womenwho had ever met Donald Trump and taken a photo with him everywhere cheered!!! They thought they had hit the jackpot. "He's gonna pay us all off now, regardless of how out-there the allegation!" Except, instead of following his his past attorney-advice to "just pay them to go away," it now became "fight it." Ut oh. Rich (and/or famous) men have long paid off "allegations" so they go away. They'd have been better off doing this: I am sure some did, but when could that have possibly started? (10-20 years ago?) Since the Biden-finger-rape allegation got a second life (it had come up last year and no one noticed) I have felt the only reason she might have credence (as opposed to "why didn't you come forward when this happened?) is because he was a sitting Senator when it allegedly happened (a VERY powerful position), and going to the press back then who have been a non-starter (her mother calling in to Larry King notwithstanding). -
We don’t buy meat in the grocery store. There are plenty of meat packers here, but when we buy a half a cow, or a whole pig, we let the farmer deal with it. We can buy chickens locally, as well as sheep, goat, rabbits, etc. I do think the major cities could be in trouble without the major meat packing plant supply chains. Out here in the wilds of the ‘burbs? Not-so-much.

The cynical would say she's hoping not to have pay the money she owes him. Honestly though, for those who thought about it (ewww) ... a germaphobe is gonna get nasty with a pr0n star? I mean maybe if he's triple sheathed, but Trump has women throwing themselves at him, and he'd choose her? -

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

Is the current argument about not enough tests? (not true) Or that tests do not do much other than show if you are positive today? Or that we need more antibody tests in order to determine if people have had the Wuhan virus, and will be protected against getting it again for an unknown amount of time? I am unclear about what argument is being rehashed this morning. ? -

The last time we came into the country since there was word of a virus in Wuhan China (March 14th) we flew into Newark from Spain. We filled out CDC forms with our contact info and what countries we had been in, etc (I am assuming so that would could be notified if someone on our flight came up positive), as well as some random health and COVID-19 contact information (had we been in contact with anyone who had COVID-19, were we health professionals working with COVID-19 patients, etc). We had our temperature taken with a temperature gun upon arrival. Customs included no social distancing (since global entry was down it was a lot of people packed like sardines). We had our passports taken after clearing, and the custom agent disappeared with them (we assume to check our names against our temperatures, and if your had a high temp or were hacking (I never heard a cough while waiting), you'd have been whisked away). We were never offered a mask, gloves, or hand santizer at customs, although we had some with us. We were told to self-quarantine for two weeks (which we did... instacart was our friend). If someone wants to know more into about exactly what happened that Saturday we arrived home, read here. It also mentioned what my son and his fiancée had to do in Toronto when they flew in the day before (hint: not much). Here is what the CDC can do to quarantine people. -
