The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Just what would be gained by a few more weeks of lockdown ? Will the virus be vanquished by then ? Almost certainly not. So maybe we will have changed the cause of death on a few thousand death certificates. For that, Millions are jobless and many businesses at this point will never return. We’re already looking at major economic problems for a decade or more and the government can’t hand out money forever. Your aforementioned “ flag wavers” aren’t the ones who need to admit we have to live with the virus being around. They are the ones who have accepted that fact. The sooner we get on with life, the better. A number is a number, so comparisons to deaths in wars are silly. And just what will we learn hiding in our homes? How to bankrupt Cities, States and eventually the nation ? -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
It will, but I don’t like it. Hospital capacity should be most important consideration for that. Hospitalization is purely dependent on who is getting Coronavirus, not how many. Cuomo’s benchmarks are too stringent and I’m not confident Erie will hit them in time to save us from economic ruin. Going to be heading to Ohio to get a haircut in the next week or so. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Mortality rate is the most important factor, as the asymptomatic rate is so high. Reality says the chances of death from Covid 19 are relatively low. Now, the chances that you, me or any other individual is not going to be infected ? I’d say that chance is low. A high percentage of new cases here in NY report that they’ve been self isolating. Virtually everyone is going to be infected, it’s just a matter of when. We’re just shifting dates around with these lockdowns . Saw that. Went for my tests yesterday ( both PCR and antibody ). The antibody test isn’t part of Cuomo’s formula here in NY so that one was just curiosity. Got the PCR test to help County get their testing numbers up. It took less than 5 minutes to drive through and I was the only car at the drive through site other than the health personnel and security. Results in 3-5 days and you check online. -
Paul Field and others apparently have no idea of how America works, why it came to be, and not even a rudimentary understanding of the economy or the healthcare system. The US has plenty of healthcare capacity for those who contract Coronavirus. So much that it actually sat idle awaiting patients that never arrived; all due to government decree.
-
Yeah, some actually are. I saw perhaps the dumbest thing I’ve seen yet in this CoronaVirus thing; some people in Florida protesting the lifting of the lockdown ! What is that ? Stunning that anyone would protest their own freedom to go out or stay in. Pretty sure the government won’t issue you a summons if you decide to hunker down.

Bailout--Stimulus Thread
Boatdrinks replied to Trump_is_Mentally_fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Chapter 83 of Title 41, United States Code is none other than the Buy American Act. That 1933 law prioritizes American manufacturers over others when the government makes purchases. The Trump administration strengthened the Buy American act last year. The Democrats’ bill would waive it permanently, allowing the government to purchase more goods from overseas, unrestricted. Advantage: China, the world’s manufacturing hub. Disadvantage: Americans who want to work making things. Wow. You’d almost think Dems don’t want Americans working, making things. They’d prefer them to be on government programs, sitting home receiving UBI. -
Yep. Tired tropes about yelling fire in a theater or regulating the privilege of driving are a distraction from the actual issue. Peacefully going about one’s business is no more a threat now than it ever was with infectious diseases, viruses in the past. It’s being used to stoke fear so the stripping away of freedoms comes ( mostly) without argument. The topic is well worn now, but no less applicable until and if it stops.

But that’s not a political argument Tibs, its an argument about spending that has nothing to do with Covid 19 relief baked into a bill specifically for such relief. It doesn’t belong in there and is a disgusting display of special interest BS being used to hold regular people and their finances hostage. To advance what is a purely political agenda. That’s just wrong. -
Bailout--Stimulus Thread
Boatdrinks replied to Trump_is_Mentally_fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I don’t think that’s the case. It seems the Dems proposal is filled with lib -style goodies that need weeding out. Things that have little or nothing to do with Covid 19 relief. You know; releasing criminals , vote by mail, LGBTQ crap, “ environmental justice ..wtf? The bill mentions “ diversity “ about 20 times. How is that relevant to Covid 19 ? There’s some good stuff in there, but a LOT of garbage too. -

Is that what Pelosi was doing the first time around when she was holding things up ? Helping ? -
The measures appear to no longer have the goal of reducing cases, but of reducing them to zero. That’s not reasonable or even possible. The vast majority of people will either be asymptomatic to this or will recover from mostly mild symptoms. Locking down millions of people and forcing them from their jobs cannot be looked at as accomplishing a “ greater good”.
-
Agreed, it is needed. Reasonable standards need to be met, but that’s it. You can take every precaution and it’s still possible someone could contract a virus. It would be very difficult to prove where someone contracted a virus, and even if they did it doesn’t imply negligence. Perhaps all employees in any communal setting should be required to sign a type of waiver as a condition of employment. While even best practices are being followed, there is still some risk and the employee is voluntarily participating by choosing to work there or not.

Democratic 2020 Presidential Primary Thread
Boatdrinks replied to snafu's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yep. Imagine if somehow it was that knucklehead Cuomo ? Today he lamented the stock trade and how companies are going to hire less people, leaving the American worker behind. Now he’s concerned about the American worker ? As his policies strangle what’s left of the economy ? That’s rich. Maybe he can tell them to go find an essential job. -
Ridiculous. Why should deaths even factor in ? It would be like counting recoveries. It’s totally dependent on who gets the virus. That’s outrageous. The case number per 10,000 is also absurd. Hospital capacity should be the primary factor. It’s about not overwhelming the health system, not trying to prevent the inevitable. Destroying the economic future of millions and probably the Country as we know it to possibly save a few thousand from succumbing to a specific cause of death is the largest virtue signal of all. All to force in a new , socialist society.

PFF with the ultimate Bills troll job
Boatdrinks replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lol... I expect nothing less from that outfit. -
Perhaps that could be a way to reframe the argument and recruit Democrat support ; By remaining locked down, we are favoring the protection of an older, more well to do, largely Caucasian population in expensive nursing homes while ignoring the working poor and the homeless. It’s an inequality ; it’s unfair.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
It’s already been about as long as the nation can afford. No reopening could be considered “ early” at this point. Predictions for a slower recovery are a strange argument against restarting the economic engine while it might actually have some fuel. Summer is approaching and will give consumers opportunities to release pent up demand. It doesn’t really matter who might be willing to patronize restaurants , theaters etc, just that the public be given the opportunity. Some folks most definitely will. I always point to the crowds at the beaches that were shamed on social media as evidence of this Pretty sure most of us haven’t gone through anything like being cooped up for two months with virtually nowhere to go. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
So true. Doctors and scientists are not economists. They see the world only through the bubble of health , and are pretty accustomed to having money. That’s why a Fauci can look at reopening the economy as “ needless”. What a joke. “ Live for yourself - there’s no one else more worth living for..begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more “ Neil Peart -

I’d much rather “ fiddle with it” (ie not wear it when I don’t have to) than to normalize and adopt the custom of covering faces in the USA. The more it is kept as a temporary measure the better. You think it hasn’t occurred to me or others that yes , some are just being lazy and wearing it all the time ? You’re trivializing the flu deaths. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yes they do; inside. Joggers and people in cars wearing masks is just a bit overdone. Deaths are deaths and they count, right ? The flu is not the same , but it has claimed far more lives than Covid19 at this point and probably for quite some time. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Boatdrinks replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
This ^^^ and what’s with this “ the flu isn’t as deadly blah blah “ We know it isn’t, yet tens of thousands die from it every flu season. Don’t those deaths matter? I don’t recall seeing folks wearing masks before, or calls to close the country for a few months every winter. Sorry, but wearing a face covering anytime you go outside isn’t a small thing nor is it necessary. -

No, foolio. Cuomo. His NYC response was a disgrace. His ridiculous benchmarks are designed to keep most of the rest of NY state shut down for no reason.
