The problem for restaurants and fast food places and such, where wages are generally the minimum wage, are that those jobs have traditionally been taken either by part time high school students, or by immigrants. I know where I live high school and college students aren't flocking to those jobs the way they used to, as a way for them to start gaining financial independence. Their parents foot the bill for everything, to the detriment of their child. My kids were told from the get go they would be expected to generate their own funds for entertainment, and to help pay for car insurance and such. My younger one works at Chik Fil-A right now. I always say that every kid should have to work at a fast food joint for a least some time to gain appreciation for work. The other issue around these parts is that the immigrant (or let's say less economically advantaged) population have no affordable housing anywhere near where the jobs in my area are located, nor do they have ready transportation to get there.

This will never be solved. When one group of people do not believe the second group should even exist, no amount of diplomacy will ever have any effect. That’s why I am always surprised that some think the US can somehow make peace there. Arabs and Jews have hated each other for centuries - what power do we have to change it?

I do not agree with your point whatsoever, because you have made no point. This cancel culture crap is just that. Crap. Allow people to express their views regardless of political persuasion, then debate them on the merits of their argument. Quit threatening individuals, quit threatening companies with boycotts. And quit pretending it is only one side of the political spectrum responsible.

it is all of the above. It is crap because it is a myth, the myth being that "cancel culture" is some new phenomenon. As I pointed out, since the beginning of this country political advocates have tried to bend other people and businesses to do what they want. The right uses it to try to pressure for things they like, and vice versa. Companies that get political pressure put on them make choices how to respond. Welcome to capitalism. And if someone loses a job because they happened to voice an opinion their boss doesn't like, then they have choices. They can sue the employer, they can get another job, they can open up a competing business that is more friendly to folks of their political bent. And so on. I'm not surprised you don't get this, and now want to say I'm all over the place. It's your MO when you don't have an argument against a stance someone else takes.

The phrase cancel culture is a trite little ditty designed to inflame people like you. The real issue is that people from all political spectra need to realize folks have differing opinions and that’s OK. Let’s see how Sen Ernst is treated for speaking the truth.

No, that's what you want to talk about. What I want to talk about is that this whole cancel culture crap is just that - crap. It is an invented phrase by butt hurt right wingers right now in some twisted attempt to get votes. This kind of political pressure has gone on forever. It is not more prevalent now nor is it more dangerous. You're being ridiculous. Was it dangerous to the the players of the NFL when Trump was crowing about boycotting the league when players -gasp!! - exercised their constitutional right to protest? How many vendors and such stood to lose their jobs over that. Or at Disney when they - gasp! - decided to have a weekend a year at Disney World for gays. What about that boycott - how many employees could have lost their jobs over that? I can go on forever with this stuff. You are just butt hurt because those on the left wing have seen that they too can play the same game the right wing has played, and that it might have some effect. and it is a game to be sure. The people if this country need to realize that we all have rights to our opinions. As I said earlier, two sides of the same coin. But now you want to crow that it's dangerous and such just because it's being flipped to affect people or opinions you like. Get over yourself.

It was proven in Arizona by audits done by the state. What is now going on is an effort to overturn that audit being done by a company with no experience in doing so, using individuals who include someone who was at the Jan 6th insurrection. Those independent observers who have been allowed in to watch have reported that the entire operation is a disorganized mess. The DO J, the states that audited and certified their elections, and the courts verified the results. And you think this nonsense going on now in Arizona will somehow be more relevant? Wake up. They are trying to stop it because they recognize the rigged nature of this nonsense, because it has no legal basis to be conducted, and because they know if it’s allowed to continue it will permanently destroy our electoral system and ultimately our democracy. Any state legislature, regardless of who holds the majority, could then just decide they don’t like results, hire some fly by night company to give them the result they want, and in doing so deny the will of the people.

I can't tell if you agree or disagree with me. Yes, the Colorado stuff was yet another example. As I stated, you can go back throughout US history to find examples of those of a specific political persuasion trying to influence individuals and businesses towards their political viewpoint. That is why the right crying and moaning about being "woke" or "cancel culture" is so ridiculous - they do and have done the same thing.

Define the years. Several years ago it was the right trying to boycott the NFL and Target and Keurig and Disney and on and on. Recently, say the last year for sure, it is more the left. Opposite sides of the same coin. I’m pretty sure the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans used what political clout they felt they had to sway public opinion and put pressure on businesses back in the 1700’s. The fake outrage of those on the right is ridiculous. Cheating on a horse race is cancel culture? Do right wing people honestly believe that is somehow going to gain them votes? Can you not stand up and shout out how absurd that is? I did. As an example of the absurdity of this nonsense.

We will indeed. And yes, it is a horse. The trainer of the Derby winner is now saying that him getting caught cheating in a horse race is cancel culture. That is patently absurd.

And I'm saying that works both ways, on the right and the left, and that I detest it regardless. I am an independent, very conservative when it comes to fiscal and law and order policies, much more liberal when it comes to social policies. Why so many people get all hot and bothered about people of different colors or gender identity and such and try to marginalize them is beyond me. And when such folks then fight back and demand their rights and apply political pressure to do so, I understand. But it goes too far sometimes. I'll give you an example in my town right now. The local high school hired a diversity and inclusion officer, mainly in response to minority students feeling bullied and harassed at school. The school also has wrestled with how to accommodate transgender students and instituted a policy where students should use a restroom of the gender they identify with. Fine by me there. A student objected to this based on her religious beliefs (also fine by me, we all have a right to our opinions), and then a transgender student started going after her on social media, telling her she should be killed for her attitude and such. That is definitively NOT all right by me, and as much as I support the transgender community that student should be disciplined severely for threatening another student. The bottom line in all this is simple: people are more concerned with yelling about things than listening and learning about the other side.

Cancel culture is a nonsense term used to try and inflame the right wing base. In reality, both political persuasions do this crap. They try and influence businesses to bend to their political will. It has gone on for years and years. It is not some new thing that only the left wing does, look at the list I posted earlier where right wing nut jobs tried to close down companies like the NFL and many others. Businesses will always do what they feel helps their bottom line the most. If it means adopting a more right wing position, they will do so. If it means adopting a more left wing position, they will do so. .

A bill was finally passed in 2015 that gave around 300 billion over a 5 year period. That after as you point out McConnell saying in Obama’s first term that his only goal was to make Obama a one term president. And now his goal is to block anything Biden wants. We need to get back to actual negotiation and compromise between parties. I am in favor of a more limited bill than what Biden proposes but more than Caputo wants. Civil engineers tell us our roads and bridges are in dire straits, we should never have water like we have in Flint, ports and airports are in rough shape. And access to broadband is needed in our rural areas. Focus on those.
