Surprised Bills didn't use more QB rollouts. I believe McD wants to see the QB stand in the pocket and deliver quick read throws, at least for preseason. TT, hopefully, will be better with some game planning. I don't believe the offensive line has ever been that good at pass blocking and Thursday was a continuation of that. The pocket collapsed surprisingly easy even with the first unit. A few screens might have helped. That was an ugly offensive performance in game two. I can't believe the Bills are committing so many penalties. That must be driving the coaches nuts. Offense: D Defense: A Special Teams: C-

THE ROCKPILE REVIEW - The Brandon Beane Era Begins
richardb1952 replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"He knows Watkins is better than Matthews and Darby is probably better than Gaines, but he also knows that Matthews and Gaines plus the two guys the Bills can draft next year are probably better, collectively, than Watkins and Darby." Totally agree. Also believe all the accumulated picks just give the Bills options moving forward. I also believe the Bills will draft a QB next year but I doubt they will overpay to get their guy. They will be doing a lot of research between now and next year to get the guy who might lead this franchise to the next level. Would not be surprised to see TT, Peterman and the new guy next year with TT being the bridge so the other two can be brought on correctly. I am pretty certain that some of the picks for 2018 will be parlayed into future higher picks unless players they want suddenly fall to a level that makes moving up the right thing to do. Finally, I believe the Bills will be better record wise in 2017 than what many think, even with the trades. Great commentary Shaw66. -
Best case scenario. KC has a down year, Bills make the playoffs, TT is the real deal, trade the KC pick to a QB needy team for a lower 1st rounder and more future first and 2nd rounders. With a little luck, repeat above again and again.

What's Your Definition of a Successful 2017 Bills Season
richardb1952 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My definition of success for year one under the new coaching staff/ organization will be seeing the Bills beat the teams they are supposed to beat, beat some teams they shouldn't and be competitive in the losses. From year 2 onward, success should be measured in progress beyond year one and the playoffs. -
I like what has been done so far. Appears to have been a nice draft with an extra 2018 list round pick. Appears to be quality staff assembled, a lot of experience. Brought in some solid free agents in form of safeties, a LB, some WRs some RBs, and a potential upgrade as a kicker Still has about 12 million in reserve for possible additions. Offense should be solid and I would expect the defense to be more focused with players understanding their roles, unlike last year. I would expect there to be fewer stupid penalties and more accountability. I am hopeful that third and long for the defense won't make me nervous. I don't know what to expect this year as far as W/L record, but I hope to see the foundation being set for year 2 and beyond.

There is no reason for anyone outside the Bills organization, including fans, to think the Bills will be better than last year. Tougher schedule, new coaching staff, too much reliance on rookies and FAs, loss of MG and Gilmore. I believe that many of these reasons are exactly why the Bills will be better than last year. Better coaching staff - I know McDermott and staff are unknowns but I firmly believe they have to be better than Rex and brother. I don't know who was running the show last year but I feel everyone on defense this year will at least understand their roles and responsibilities. There will be more reliance on rookies contributing this year and that includes Ragland and Lawson who basically had no rookie seasons last year. The rookies that are being depended on were all 4 year starters in college and all appear to have great attitudes, talent and knowledge to be able to make strong contributions this year. I believe there is a strong possibility of getting a new punter, I like our LB corp better than last years. Tough to lose good talent (Gilmore and MG), but I believe there are players on this roster that can fill in to an acceptable level. I hated to lose A. Williams, but lets face it, if you can't stay on the field, is it really a loss. Schedule is brutal, but if the Bills can avoid the injuries that have plagued them the last few years, this team can equal last years record and can be viewed as an ascending team by the end of the year. I fully expect that by the end of the year, those outside the organization as well as Bills fans will view this team as a team that is on the rise.

I believe the Bills will take an OLB with the first pick at 10, especially if ZB isn't re-signed. If they see a real good OLB that could be picked up in a latter round, I believe OJ Howard could be in play. Peppers is a wild card but I believe they would like to trade down if they think he would be available later. Definitely could use the extra picks. Of course, if one of the top safeties, Lattimore or one of the projected top DL fall, all bets are off. -
The video seemed to indicate that he was under thrown to a lot. Nice that he still made catches though.

1) Yes he did 2) I just said it was one stat, not necessarily a most important one. 3) Production may be dependent on offensive philosophy. Alabama does not throw the ball as much as Clemson for a number of reasons. As far as ability goes, who can say who will be a better future fit. All I'm saying is that OJ would be a very intriguing choice at 10. I am not against it, but could also see the importance of a starting safety or CB. I was under the impression though that Dennisons offense might feature two TEs. OJ would be an intriguing choice if that indeed is the case. I bet if teams knew how good Gronkowski would be, I think a number of teams would have considered him in the first round, even at 10. Not saying OJ is the next Gronk, but he certainly has many of the same measurables (except OJ probably won't have Brady throwing to him).

Advanced stats: Bills run game was actually a ZBS

Interesting read. -
O.J. is a mismatch as a 6' 6", 245 lb. receiver. 4.51 in 40. Good blocker at college level. A lot of athleticism. Run a two tight end set with Clay, Watkins, Shady and another WR to be determined later could be formidable. Considering the back problems that Clay has had in the past, O J might be a consideration. I would still consider a CB/ Safety to be a higher priority, but OJ would not be a horrible choice. If a real good CB could be found in round 2, then I could see grabbing a potential elite TE at 10.
