  1. Nonsense. Tens of thousands of individuals have been captured and processed by American forces. There have been a few hundred allegations of abuse, and only a few dozen documented cases. Investigations are ongoing, prosecutions have been brought, and some individuals have already been punished. The record of human-rights compliance so far compiled by the United States Armed Forces in the war on terror has been exemplary. I hope no one is under the misconception AI is an objective organization that doesn't have a political agenda. It includes a worldwide ban of the death penalty and institution of the International Criminal Court. Are all of their supporters here signed up for that, too? Want to see American officials traveling abroad seized and prosecuted in the ICC?
  2. A properly executed PIT manuever on a high center-of-gravity vehicle such as described at 55mph should result in the target vehicle rolling over repeatedly. Or, you could back off, relax and drive the speed limit.
  3. Describing someone unknown by white, black, asian is hardly racist; it's simply descriptive. "1-Adam-12, I have an APB on a, uh, a human." Now, saying races shouldn't mix - now that's racist. If that poster is identified as having been banned previously, I fail to understand why he is allowed to post here again.
  4. Tex Johnson would do a barrel roll in it. He was the test pilot who barrel-rolled the 707 prototype for a demonstration. Initially suspended/fired for the stunt, Boeing found they got a lot of publicity for it, and reinstated him with the understanding he would never do it again. Click here to download a 2.85MB video of it. "I was called to Mr. Allen's office Monday morning, and Mr. Allen asked me what I thought I was doing, and I said 'Well, I was selling airplanes."
  5. The "Hate America First" parade will be moved to another thread due to rain.
  6. For the folks who are convinced that these "abuses" actually took place, and it's the governments' responsibility to prove they didn't, I have just one question - have you stopped beating your wives?
  7. Spoken like a man who's never witnessed middle-aged women at the opening of a day after Thanksgiving day sale. The store clerks do their best to avoid becoming consumed.
  8. Now that's strange. I posted on this thread yesterday, and now it's gone, and the response to it also. Never saw that before. Board hiccup?
  9. I've owned as many as three cats and two dogs at the same time, don't have a problem with either. The right/best animal is the one that returns what you want out of a pet. Nothing wrong with enjoying a good cat joke, though.
  10. Maybe you should cover the blurry eye to avoid straining the other and getting a headache? A Hot Pocket and some duct tape should do the trick. Or a slab of bologna and a staple gun. I'm not technically a doctor, so the exact procedure escapes me, but you get the point.
  11. Yet another example of why it's good to keep old people around. Testify, you old curmudgeon, you.
  12. UNC chemists figure out what causes ‘skunky beer’
  13. Just the damndest thing. I'm reading postings on a board from people I've never met, and many who've never met each other, and every time a guy or gal is in need, look at everyone step forward with a kind word. There's some nice folks who post here. I'm reading this a little later, but heck yeah I can do that. As a friend of mine is fond of saying, "We don't even need a reason!" If this thing wears you down at some point while you beat it, you have a place here to talk it out anytime.
  14. I thought the real question was going to be which jersey should todd wear in the HOF?
  15. Interesting, but doesn't surprise me. My sister-in-law is a designer who once showed me a set of color charts used by a color consultant she knows - like a ring of paint color examples, but with the specific thoughts and emotions each color evokes in people. The color consultant advises detroit what colors to put on their line of cars this year, recommends paint schemes for stores and restaurants, etc. He was hired by a client to advise the best color to make a specific mailing, in which the client had a huge stake in. The client saved an enormous amount of money in refund checks that were never cashed, many of them having been thrown away unopened due to the unappealing design.
  16. Well, he is a reporter, not a soldier. I sense from his writings he has nothing but the utmost respect and gratitude for the job they do. Sounds like he gets out with them enough to tell the story. For everyone else, there's quite a bit to read there, I know. But it's a worthwhile read, whether you support the decision to go there or not. Some of those stories also have video links accompanying them, which can break up the long read.
  17. Yahoo updates their frequently viewed photos on a regular basis. The photo that was originally linked to is posted next to the story here.
  18. "[bruce Smith] promised he'd be there," Thomas said. "Then I called Darryl [Talley] and told him my speech wouldn't be as long as his."
  19. The photographer who took the picture is Michael Yon. He is a freelance AP photog, currently with the 1-24th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division in Iraq. He had a brief explanation of the photograph here and here. For a view of the situation in Iraq from someone who is actually there, click here to read his blog.
  20. So everyone who believes in God (75% so far in this poll) is just sca-red. We're all in foxholes. Gonna die any second. Mommy! Hah! No, my point was that there are a lot of "I don't knows" who are ignoring their belief, hope or faith because it's convenient, and if push came to shove, you bet your life they'd be saying a prayer. Being in a foxhole is a metaphor for most outside of our beloved GI's - a metaphor for having a major life experience focus you on what's really important in your life, and not necessarily a threat to YOUR immediate life. People don't go to church because they're scared. At least, not anyone I've ever met.
  21. Believer. Not a good example of one, but one nonetheless. BTW, if you're local St. Paul's United Methodist Church is raising money to bomb abortion clinics or for suicide bombers, or the pastor is claiming to be Christ himself and stockpiling weapons in the rectory, or they are in any way advocating violence against other people due to their religious beliefs, by all means get out of there and report them. But it's more likely that in addition to their worship, they are doing things like providing a community focal point for charitable donations and support for the people in your town who need it most - regardless of their beliefs. Chances are good the congregation includes amongst it's members some of the finest, nicest people you will ever have the pleasure of knowing in your entire lifetime. As a whole, I'd stack them up against the people in any other regular public gathering you can think of, with the understanding that the better examples are usually going to end up being the same people (such as a Lion's club member who also attends church). I don't think the poll numbers are accurate. Under different circumstances, the believer numbers would be much higher. There are very few atheists in foxholes.
  22. Somewhere is an English teacher who would like to use you as an example, like a loose cannon stepping up to the plate and grabbing the bull by the horns, who just kisses simile and metaphor away down the drain. Your winged posts are the Led Zeppelin of TSW. PS I have no comment on the actual topic of this thread. Like the sound of a tree clapping one hand.
  23. I second that. From start to finish.
  24. I've met children I would trust with a varmint rifle, and adults who make me nervous when sharp objects are around. Nice part about being a parent - I get to decide what's appropriate for my kids, and everyone else can stuff their opinion.
