The conflict arose when Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens quarterback known for his “Era 8” brand, filed an opposition on April 2 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, challenging Earnhardt’s attempt to trademark a stylized No. 8 used by JR Motorsports. Jackson argued it could confuse consumers with his own merchandise. Just two days later, on April 4, Earnhardt announced via Twitter that he had secured rights to his classic slanted No. 8, abandoning the contested version. “We’re moving away from the original JRM 8,” he stated, ending the short-lived battle.
