He won't get past #3 Chicago after this game! Cleveland #1 overall, San Fran #2, Chicago #3 and the NY Jets at #6 all need a QB. I doubt he makes it to the Jets. Whaley would need to trade up to draft Watson. Now Williams might be there at #10.

Let's not forget that this year's Clemson team also blanked OSU 31-0 in the Fiesta Bowl. Great ending to a very good game.

In my view, this might be the best scenario going forward with Kris Richard (Seahawks DC) as HC, Anthony Lynn (Bills OC) as OC and Gus Bradley (Ex-Jags HC, Seahawk DC) as DC. Also keeping Tyrod Taylor at QB. As far as Panthers DC Sean McDermott goes, to me this is like hiring another Rex Ryan as his defense had a very bad year in 2016 and has been up, then down every other year. The team loses one CB and drops to the top ten worst defenses in the league (29th in passing yards) This has red flags all over it. JMO

When Marv Levy was about to hire his last DC in Buffalo it was none other than Tom Coughlin. Instead, Coughlin was offered the job as Panthers HC. The man has 20 years of being an NFL HC and 46 years of coaching experience behind him! VP of football operations just means he will be lending all that veteran NFL experience to the teams GM, HC. So that they don't make the mistake of trading two #1 picks for a WR when they don't have their franchise QB on the roster yet. Coughlin knows how to build a great 4-3 defense and build a strong run game. Which is something Buffalo could benefit from! He is not exactly a czar but he might have been all that was needed to help the current GM make the right decisions. Go back to Whaley offering a good contract to CJ Spiller and luckily for Whaley Spiller chose New Orleans, Think of no Shady the last two years and Spiller instead.

Jags hire Tom Coughlin as executive
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Same! They gave the current GM an extension to match the contracts of Marrone, Coughlin Adam SchefterVerified account @AdamSchefter 19m19 minutes ago Jaguars extending contract of GM Dave Caldwell two years, giving him matching three-year deals with Doug Marrone and Tom Coughlin. -
I'm not! I'd be willing to wager the Jags will be more relevant than Buffalo in the future. Doug Whaley with all his four years of NFL GM experience of not being an actual GM because he hasn't hired and fired the head coaches like other teams GM's It's more like Russ Brandon has been the real GM and now he steps back behind the curtain...again! My point being the senior NFL football man in the Buffalo Bills front office has only four seasons of failure to make the playoffs to rely on.

Son of a , Coughlin executive VP of Football operations. Adam SchefterVerified account @AdamSchefter 8m8 minutes ago And this! Jaguars also hiring their former HC Tom Coughlin as Executive VP of Football Operations, per source. Marrone and Coughlin in Jax.

Perhaps it's someone no other team is even talking about like Jim Schwartz. Keep Lynn as OC and Tyrod at QB and allow Schwartz to hire his own DC.

HC candidate Kris Richard interviewing 1/8
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
With Brandon and Whaley still with the team, I don't see the Bills making the playoffs this season. Then after the season should they fire Doug Whaley I can see the team promoting Jim Monos to GM and the vicious cycle continues! -
Marrone wasn't helping the offense his last season in Buffalo as he was far too busy helping his good bud Danny Crossman on special teams. Kinda why the run game went into the toilet and the offense went pass happy under Hackett. Buffalo was #4 with special teams in 2014. 12th in 2015 and 23rd this year under Rex.
-
Still, losing one CB should have that much impact to drop the team from 6th overall to 26th points allowed, 21st yards allowed and 29th in passing yards allowed. That's a huge dropoff. Isn't good coaching supposed to determine if the backup players are good enough to step in without missing a beat! That Panther secondary stunk this year and this with the #4 team in defensive hurries and #2 in the NFL in sacks with 47. I'll be very disappointed should the Bills hire Sean McDermott as their new HC.

St Doug officially head coach in Jax.
Nihilarian replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The good lord won't save him if he keeps Hackett as his OC. -
Yes, Kirby, he can't seem to put it all together! Just think what the offense would have looked like the last two years without Rex, Incognito and Tyrod Taylor. Just remember Whaley drafted some rookie QB's and then asked to play behind one of the worst lines in the league. This, with no veteran QB to teach them the NFL ropes, no QB coach and the only guy they had to learn from was an NFL rookie OC himself. Just think of one other thing, what would have happened if CJ Spiller had taken the deal offered by Whaley and there was no Shady either. Whaley has had four years to build a team and he clung to EJ way too much.
-
And they drafted three new CB's with a #2, #3, #5 and there was also free agency. Josh Norman was let go because the team thought of him as a system CB and he wouldn't do as well in Washington. Losing one player shouldn't drop the team that far, JMO. The Panthers were 29th in passing yards allowed and 26th in overall points allowed, 21st in overall yards allowed. Every other HC candidate had their area of the team in the top ten or better.
-
I don't get the love for Sean McDermott as his defense had worse stats this year than Rex's and he has had some up and down seasons. Or for Vance Joseph either for that matter.
-
Tell us how you really feel. The only way Whaley stays if he dumps Tyrod and hires a new HC. Is if he manages to acquire Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer or some other veteran QB and they play well this year. I feel anything less than an a 9-7 season and Whaley is gone. If he drafts a rookie QB and starts him with a rookie HC that is normally a recipe for a disaster of a season and we might see a 4-12 or worse season. JMO And you can thank Russ Brandon for this as he told the new owners that "they would know who to hire after they interviewed all the candidates". It's like once Bill Polian said he would hire AJ Smith to run the football side both Whaley and Brandon went into cockroach mode!

I gotta disagree with some of this. But love the idea of the Buffalo Bills finding their own Parcells!, err Bill Belichick! In regards to Robert Kraft and Parcells, as it wasn't Kraft who hired Parcells as he only owned the stadium at that point in time. It was James Orthwein who owned the team and hired Parcells by offering him to be the GM and HC. Old Bill was hired in 1993 and Kraft bought the team in 1994. Parcells did build a 2-14 team into a playoff team in two years as his first year he went 6-10 and in the second went 10-6 losing a WC round. In another two seasons, Parcells had a SB team with Drew Bledsoe at QB. After that SB In 1996 Bill Parcells wanted to leave the Patriots but alas his contract stated that he couldn't coach anywhere else in the NFL. To circumvent this the Jets hired Parcells as a "consultant" and then hired Bill Belichick to be the Jets HC. At this point, NE started a legal action and that is when the league stepped in and brokered a deal between the teams allowing Parcells to be the Jets HC. What's crazy is Bill Parcells coaching staff with the NY Jets in 1997. OC Charlie Weis, DC Bill Belichick, D-line coach Romeo Crennel, Al Groh LBer coach, Todd Haley offensive assistant, QC, Eric Mangini defensive assistant, QC. BTW, Parcells was also the GM with the Jets too. The 1996 NY Jets went 1-15 and with Parcells as GM, HC they went 9-7 in his first year. Playoffs the second season going 12-4 to the AFC championship game. In 1999 the Jets went 8-8 and Parcells wanted to retire leaving Belichick as the new HC. Instead the Patriots, Robert Kraft made him a better offer and he bolted to the Patriots. Pete Carroll as the Patriots HC inherited a solid team and went 10-6, to 9-7, to 8-8 and with an opportunity to hire Belichick away from the NY Jets Kraft fired Carroll and hired Bill. Anyway, at that point in time, Carroll isn't the man he is today. Robert Kraft is a brilliant man who knew who to hire to build a powerhouse team and he did that and then stood back and let Belichick do just that. At one point Ralph Wilson knew who to hire to bolster his floundering team and save him from needing to sell it. Chuck Knox was fired in LA for the failure of not reaching a SB. However, Knox had won five straight NFC West championships and his teams lost three NFC Championship games. Knox didn't come cheap and was one of the highest paid coaches in the league in Buffalo. On this note, I might add that Knox basically had complete autonomy in choosing his players and building his team his way. Stew Barber was the Bills GM at the time and Knox had the power of player personnel over him. Knox also brought his director of player personnel with him from the Rams in Norm Pollom and it was Norm who later on recommended hiring Bill Polian. Another interesting note was that Wilson didn't meddle with Knox as he did in other years. He stepped back and allowed Chuck to build a playoff team. The 2017 Buffalo Bills are so dysfunctional that they may need to clean sweep the entire front office, scouting department, doctors, trainers and hire all new top people. This includes Russ Brandom because he will probably always stick his nose in football affairs or be leaking things to the press. The Pegula's need to hire a team president of football operations who should then hire his own GM, HC. Also, the owners should stay in the background and allow the football man to do his job. Just fixing one aspect of the team isn't going to build a Super Bowl contending team. It's not just about the QB, the HC, the OC, the DC. It all starts at the top! If these new owners ever want to actually compete with the Patriots they will need to hire someone who is capable of doing just that. Look at the top five teams in the playoffs and hire a GM from one of them and promote him to be the team president of football operations. I keep going back to Green Bay's GM Ted Thompson who is not only the teams GM but also an executive VP, director of football operations. If he won't come to Buffalo then perhaps hire Eliot Wolf to Bills GM who is the Packers director of football operations for Green Bay.

I think a lot has to do with the way the players were being coached by a players coach who would rather be their friend while allowing very little accountability Just like in what happened at the end of his run with the Jets I think Ryan lost his players in Buffalo at the end. Whoever was the SOB that let it be leaked to the media that Ryan might be fired on the Monday after the Steeler game and Tyrod benched really screwed the team chances for the playoffs in 2016 because it sure looked to me like they had no heart in that game. Yes, the chances were very slim and the stars had to align just right. Still, someone at OBD stabbed the defense right in the heart. http://buffalonews.com/2016/12/11/power-struggle-behind-bills-potential-coaching-change/ Yes, Rex Ryan's defense was overly complex but according to Marcel Dareus, it wasn't as complex as it was playing for Saban in Alabama. In Ryan's scheme, the playbook was overloaded with far too many plays to learn. The players needed to read and react based on what they saw rather than just going by instinct which can cause the players to hesitate. Rex ran a lot of a two-gap run stopping plays in 2015 which a player had far more responsibilities depending on what the offense was doing in like 6-8 reads while waiting for the play to develop. Discipline was also an issue with Ryan from the very start as the Bills were the #2 team in the league in penalties. In week four against the NY Giants, the Bills defense gave the Giants 7 first downs on offense. Seven, really? The Bills defense was doing the work for the Giants offense. The Bills defense had constant communication problems from the start too. Late incoming play calls, late player substitutions. Players running in and out on different downs and changing plays, players shifting on the line and not set when the ball is snapped. Anyone who had seen the Bills play the Jets in 2014 would be scratching their heads asking why would someone hire a head coach that just went 4-12? The Buffalo Bills didn't just beat Rex Ryan's teams that year as they destroyed them with 11 sacks, 8 turnovers and so much so it was actually comical. Geno Smith went 2 of 8 for 5 yards with 3 INTs in that first game. The Bills defensive players should be fine with better coaching just like they were under Jim Schwartz. There is some talk of the Bills hiring Gus Bradley to be the DC and if so he should get the defense back into the top ten. Wade Phillps would also be a great pickup to run the defense.

I kinda got the impression from the start of the 2015 season (after that first Colts game) that Rex Ryan's heart just wasn't in coaching anymore and he was coaching to be fired in Buffalo so he could sit back and rake in his five year 27.5 Million contract while doing as little as possible. Let's face it, that his 2015 scheme for many games was nothing like what we have seen in the past with Baltimore or the NY Jets defenses. That week two Patriot game was the biggest indicator that something was up when he didn't blitz at all and had his secondary playing a prevent type defense in being five to fifteen yards off the Patriots receivers from the start of the game. It's like he purposely tanked the defense to get fired. I also think that how Rex was fired kind of reinforces this idea in that he called the owner and talked it over while basically saying if you're going to fire me then get it over with! This take comes from remembering what Al Davis and Ralph Wilson used to do with certain head coaches. If they wanted to fire a head coach but didn't want to pay him the remainder of his contract they would ask him to fire all or part of his coaching staff and if they refused they had reason to break the contract on grounds of insubordination. Davis did this with several coaches, Mike Shanahan comes to mind and Ralph Wilson did this with Wade Phillips who refused to fire his ST coach after the music city miracle. In a few games over the last two seasons we Bills fans did see some very quality defensive coaching and it was very easy to notice the defense was outstanding. Like that Patriots 2nd game in which Brady was under extreme duress and screaming at his O-linemen on the sidelines. For being 31st in sacks that year the Bills managed to get a heavy pass rush on Brady on 50% of his dropbacks. Both Miami and Jets games the Bills defense played very well and in the last game of the season to knock the Jets out of the playoffs the defense really put their foot on Fitz's throat without Gilmore and Kyle Williams. Holding Fitz to 16 of 37 for 181, 2 TDs, 3 INT's. Either he had it planned to tank it or he just didn't care to put in the effort it takes in film study and the building of a proper game plan to defeat the next opponent. All I know is I want a coach who would give up a kidney rather than lose a single game and it isn't just about the desire to win. The man must also have the smarts to be able to outcoach the devil himself in the AFC East division. Chuck Knox was like that! How many men like that are in the NFL and why would they want to come to Buffalo to be under Whaley, the owners and Brandon.

Schefter says decision is made - Tyrod is gone
Nihilarian replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Mouse" Davis had Kelly using his "run and shoot" offense in the USFL and Ted Marchibroda is the one I credit in fully developing Kelly as he is the one who taught him to call his own plays on the field. I also credit Miami HC Howard Schnellenberger for running a pro style offense and he brought in Earl Morrell as QB coach. The one thing Kelly was great at from the start was running that 2 min drill and so when Ole Ted had Kelly run the no huddle it was like the 2 min drill all game long. Man, I miss those days when the Bills had an elite starting QB! -
Drafting a QB, learning from the past
Nihilarian replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem is that it generally takes a few years of actual playing experience before you know what you have in a QB. I keep bringing up Drew Bees as an example because he was benched in his second year of playing because he was stinking it up so badly. The Chargers even went on to draft a QB #1 overall in 2014 because Brees went 2-9 the year before with 11 TD's, 15 INTs. Now, we all know and see what a talent Brees has become and I would have to think that if anyone on the planet had seen what he is capable of the last 13 years they never would have traded him away In San Diego or used that 2004 #1 pick on a QB which was Eli Manning and they traded him to the Giants for Phillip Rivers in the first place. http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/new-york-giants-san-diego-chargers-eli-manning-philip-rivers-trade-2004-120915 What bothers me is the Bills scouts missed on EJ and so many other QB's over the years. The most recent miss was with Derek Carr in 2014 along with so much all pro talent in that draft. The Buffalo Bills current team doctors, trainers, scouts should all be fired as far as I'm concerned! -
Jim Kelly on espn about our situation 1/4
Nihilarian replied to The Tomcat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Where do you guys keep getting this Chris Polian stuff from? In an interview, while he was still open to being that senior adviser for Buffalo, he stated would hire AJ Smith as his GM and not his son. What kind of Bills fan would not want the man back in control of the Buffalo Bills who stated that he loves the Buffalo Bills would like like to see them return to dominance in the AFC East. Basically saying what all Bills fans feel and that is hating on the Patriots! Bill Polian is in the NFL hall of fame for building not one, not two, but three NFL teams into playoff powerhouses within two years. The man knows how to pick an NFL QB and hire the right head coach, not to mention player talent. Jerry Hughes was his last #1 pick in Indy before the current Indy stooge at GM gave up on him. "He is right of course. Even with an elite QB the team won't succeed without a great coaching staff, HC, OC, DC, ST coach and quality players at every position." Those were my words and look at the better playoff teams as they have quality coaching staffs and rosters. Over the past 17 years, the Bills have managed to find a gem or two for coaches, players and a big reason for all the losing is because they haven't been able to build a competent coaching staff or roster! Nor have they found that man at the top who can put it all together.
