Dunno why no team is going after Kyle Shanahan with what the guy did with that Atlanta offense this year. The Rams are looking at Wade Phillips as their new DC. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports new Rams coach Sean McVay is "hoping" to hire Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator. Going on 70, Phillips remains one of the most respected defensive minds in the league. He'd be inheriting some highly-intriguing pieces in Los Angeles, though also many more holes than he had in Denver. Phillips also employs a 3-4 defense, while the Rams were 4-3 under coaches Jeff Fisher and Gregg Williams. http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/353368/rams-hoping-to-land-wade-phillips-as-dc?ls=roto:DEN:topheadlines

Yea, It's what I remember. Andy Reid had a brainfart and asked him to switch from O-line to be the new DC for the 2011 season. It looks like he split time with Todd Bowles the next year as the defense was pretty bad. I think he was let go and went to the Ravens. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/CastJu0.htm

On another note! The Rams have hired Redskins OC Sean McVay to be their HC!

Lynne may return as oc in buffalo under McDermott
Nihilarian replied to HumbleAndHungry's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it does to an extent and it helps to have a fully healthy decent receiving corps. The Buffalo Bills led the NFL in big plays for two seasons now and that is 2015 the Bills had102 big plays with 70 runs vs 32 passes. 2016 saw a dropoff in passes for obvious reasons to 100 big plays with 77 rushes vs 23 passes. It occurs to me that Greg Roman called for more deep passing plays during the 2015 season and those TD bombs have a tendency to scare the hell out of DC's and DB's. I think with a more competent passing coordinator and a healthy fully stocked receiving corps those deep passing numbers will greatly increase. I was really hoping that Mike Mccoy would come to Buffalo whether they kept Tyrod or not. I think the guy could really help fully develop Taylor, Jones or perhaps a rookie in the years draft/ -
Potential Bidding War over McCoy?
Nihilarian replied to realtruelove's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Dunno about a potential bidding war. If it's a tossup between a team that recently won a SB and one that hasn't seem the playoffs in 17 years... CSN's John Middlekauff reports Broncos coach Vance Joseph will hire Mike McCoy as his offensive coordinator. This had been rumored but now sounds like a done deal. McCoy is a strong fit in Denver, where he coordinated under John Fox from 2010-2012. He should improve an offense that ranked near the bottom of the league. McCoy has a proven track record of getting the most out of his quarterbacks. His hiring is good news for Paxton Lynch's development. http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/353320/denver-gets-mike-mccoy-to-coordinate-offense?ls=roto:DEN:topheadlines -
McDermott hire further diminishes Whaley
Nihilarian replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sullivan is just giving his opinion and most Bills fans don't want to read anything bad about a new head coach hire. The guy isn't wrong and didn't lie or bend the truth about anything that I read. Most of us were hoping that real change was coming to the Bills front office in terms of actually allowing the GM to solely make the hire. To perhaps hire a new team president of football operations to take the new owners out of football decisions and sadly that didn't happen. I know I would have loved to have Tom Coughlin hired in Buffalo as the VP of football operations and the first time Russ showed up to the cut meetings he would have been shown the door. The dysfunction continues from my view with a GM with no real power, a meddling owner and a guy behind the curtain that nobody outside the org knows what he really does. This franchise desperately needed to hire a Chuck Knox clone! A man who could build a team that would actually contend with the Patriots, Brady, and Belichick. A man who would bring his own director of player personnel with him from his old team to reset the team scouting dept. A man with enough football acumen to be able to make the proper football decisions in free agency and the draft so that the GM's input really wasn't needed. Instead, the team hired a man new to head coaching in the NFL and it could be another Gregg Williams or another Bill Belichick in his first hire. All we can do is wish the guy good luck. Funny how the regimes keep changing and the roster talent keeps improving and yet the Bills are perennially on the edge of being a contender. -
What kind of owner hires a HC only to have the team tank...for years? What, teams can only win with the elite talent in the top 5 at every other position? Then WTH has Cleveland been doing wrong all these years? Tanking is for losers and Terry has his hockey team in a 7-year plan? Jeez! A smart Billionaire bought the Sabres at their lowest point when they were losing money and about to move the franchise out of Buffalo. It took him only two seasons to get to the playoffs. The team became financially stable after that and season ticket sales went from 5800 to 14800 and sold out 39 of 40 homes games under that guy. Excuse me, but the very last thing I want from a hockey lover owner who can't get his hockey team to win for the last seven years is to be directly involved in the hiring of the Buffalo Bills head coach... AGAIN! Doug Whaley was supposedly going to make this hire and any sound bites coming from the team should be coming from him and as to why he and Monos like this new hire. If Doug Whaley is actually the team's GM, then let him have the final say. I love the Pegula's for buying the team and keeping them in Buffalo. I just don't like it that this new owner is stepping right into the shoes of the late owner in making football decisions! Even if it was a consensus of the four, Monos, Whaley, Terry and Kim with the owners having the final say. Thanks Russ! To the guy who kept defending Rex Ryan post after post right up until he was fired. You are in no position to condemn others for their opinions...go away! Sadly, he appears as just a GM in namesake only as he has been since obtaining that title.

Bills Hire Sean McDermott as New Head Coach

If Marrone finally grows a brain or Coughlin forces him on St Doug, either way, McCoy would be a huge improvement. -
Bills Hire Sean McDermott as New Head Coach
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the Bills got the better one! Now if only the assistants are good and I'd prefer McCoy over Lynn and Turner in that order. Lets hope he hires a decent DC and ST's coach too! Making this hire early might allow the new HC to get the assistants he wants / needs. -
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/11/sean-mcdermott-meeting-with-pegulas-on-wednesday/ "McDermott, who has had other interviews both last year and this year, has had no other offers. If he wants to be an NFL head coach now, he’ll need to accept the job in Buffalo. Even if it will be harder for him to succeed in Buffalo given the blurred lines and undefined roles and responsibilities in the front office." "McDermott needs to know who has the power — both on paper and as a practical matter. What does G.M. Doug Whaley actually do? What does team president Russ Brandon actually do? Who will I be dealing with when it comes to running the team?" This is looking like another Pegula hire as they are conducting the second interview from their home in Fla.

Knowing Cleveland they will probably trade that #1 overall for more picks and perhaps trade back up for a QB. Sadly, If Whaley is the GM I see the team drafting a DB in either a CB or Safety and although the team needs upgrades on defense I'd rather go offense in WR, RT first.

Would Jauron have been as bad with better GM over Marv and Russ? Once Schobel retired the team had no pass rush until Mario. The team traded away their all-pro LT who will probably make the HoF someday and then attempted to replace him with utter garbage. Let's not forget that the guy did go 7-9 with Trent Edwards, JP Losman at QB. Which was better than Gailey with Nix ever did, better than Marrone his first season and just slightly under* Rex Ryan with a supposedly superior roster! Let's also not forget the massive amount of injuries that crippled his teams every season. Another thing to remember that the owner was on the phone from Detroit every day for hours during the season and helped make his own picks in the draft. As much as I disliked the guy as the Bills HC I think he would have done so much better in a quality situation.

I see another 5-year contract is in the works. Interesting choice for HC for sure. I kinda liken him to a younger Jim Schwartz who had his ups and downs as Titan's DC under Fisher. I'll be kinda surprised if Mike McCoy would want to come to Buffalo considering the QB, FO situation. If McCoy does come to Buffalo it would be interesting to see him work with Tyrod Taylor. That is if the team keeps Taylor. The Man did get the Broncos into the playoffs with Tebow at QB which to me was a phenomenal feat. So, I can see Taylor staying and the Bills offense getting better at passing. Lastly, I gotta wonder if this is Whaley's, Monos or the Pegula's pick for HC.

Glad you didn't hold back and told us how you really feel. Made me laugh. After that championship game, I can see Watson moving up to the #1 QB taken in this draft.
-
Gotta look at the teams ahead of the #10 pick that need a QB. #1 Cleveland needs a QB #2 San Fran needs a QB #3 Chicago needs a QB #4 Jags #5 Titans #6 Jets need a QB #7 Chargers #8 Panthers #9 Bengals #10 Bills At this point, it might be wiser to look at Mike Williams WR Clemson and the Bills might need to make another Watkins move to get him.

McDermott emerging as favorite in coaching search...
Nihilarian replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He was fired by the Eagles in 2010 and he had taken over that position of DC after Jim Johnson had health issues. 2009 Eagles Points allowed 19th, Yards allowed 12th, passing yards allowed 17th. #4 in sacks 2010 Eagles Points allowed 21st, yards allowed 12th, passing yards allowed 14th.#10 in sacks 2011 Carolina Points allowed 27th, yards allowed 28th, passing yards allowed 24th. 25th in sacks. 2012 Carolina Points allowed 18th, yards allowed 10th, passing yards allowed 13th.#10 in sacks 2013 Carolina Points allowed 2nd, Yards allowed, 2nd, passing yards allowed 6th #1 in sacks 2014 Carolina Points allowed 21st, yards allowed 10th, passing yards allowed 11th. #15 in sacks 2015 Carolina Points allowed 6th, yards allowed 6th, passing yards allowed 11th. #6 in sacks 2016 Carolina Points allowed 26th, yards allowed 21st, passing yards allowed 29th. #2 in sacks! This looks like the defense under McDermott is more player dependant then scheme dependent and let's not forget that HC Ron Rivera also has a defensive background. Like the 2016 Buffalo Bills proved in that sacks don't mean much if the team isn't doing its job in the defensive secondary. Playing man coverage a lot and safeties cheating up to help with the run? I dunno, perhaps the guy knocked the owner's socks off with his interview and just maybe he has enough talent in him to build a team that can compete with the Patriots. Who knows! The guy has to be better than the loud mouth bull chitter in Wrex Ryan. -

I'm really hoping it's Kris Richard if for nothing more than to bring that Seattle defensive scheme to Buffalo. That 4-3 scheme they run is innovative and not outdated like Ryan's scheme in attempting to relive what he did six years ago. The Bills need to settle on one defensive scheme and stick to it so they aren't spinning the wheels on defensive draft picks every few years. In the 80's the Bills ran the same 3-4 scheme from 1979 to 2000. -

Looks like McDermott is a shoe in as Bills fans are already making excuses for him. -
And they won't let him go to the NFL I'll bet. The thing is his background is all in College and has no idea what it takes to win in the NFL vs College. Nick Saban OTOH has been with the Browns under Belichick and was the HC in Miami. The time might be just right to lure Saban away from Alabama and he might just be the guy who can compete against his old friend in NE. Just a thought.

McDermott emerging as favorite in coaching search...
Nihilarian replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you look at McDermott's record with the Panthers his defenses are sometimes really good and in the case of this year really, really bad! His secondary was 29th in passing yards allowed, YIKES! The Panthers were 26th in points allowed and 21st in yards allowed. I know I'd rather see some better consistency in stats over the last few years than being in the top ten worst. It's all about coaching in that if you don't have a decent backup player on the roster or at least have a plan to replace a player you let walk then you shouldn't let them walk. The team let all-pro CB Josh Norman leave and then go on to draft CB's @ #2, #3, #5 and none of those players adapted. This despite the Panthers having the #2 team in the NFL in sacks and #4 in sack percentage, #3 in defensive hurries which means those DB's usually weren't left hanging out to dry. This team faces the New England Patriots every year and can't afford to gamble on a maybe head coach. They did that last year in thinking Rex Ryan will have his defense back to the 2009, 2010 form and it never even got close to being that good. You need an elite coach to beat an elite coach and 29th in passing yards allowed, really? Sorry, after last years stink I wouldn't hire the guy to be DC, much less the HC. If the owners want the team to tank to get a franchise QB then this guy might be the man to hire.
