  1. If a company offers me 3 million more, I'd say my loyalties shift awfully quick. I don't care who I am working with for a couple years...Also, discounts would be good if I were playing for a team in Sunny San Diego because I would feel so pleased to be in such a beautiful place - even if you don't allow me a portable fridge in the locker room. If you want me to stay here in the snow, better get your checkbook out.

3 million over the course of the contract or per year. One is ~3% increase the other is ~30% increase (for MD's contract). There are players who have decided to forgo the small increase to stay where they are successful. This past offseason one of those players was from GB (granted it was Buffalo not SD trying to pry him away with more money). I really think players consider their future success when making these decisions.

  2. He's not giving a "Hometown discount," he will get paid what he's worth, either in Buffalo or elsewhere.

The "hometown discount" thing is so overplayed. That's for someone like Fred Jackson or Kyle Williams, and even they didn't give any kind of discount.

So you think Jerry Hughes would not have been paid more by anyone else because I don't think he is on the Fred Jackson/Kyle Williams level of loyalty?

I think there is at least some discount for being on a potentially historic D line/Defense. There is a risk assessment at the heart of this. How much less he would consider is the real question I would think. I think he will command top dollar but not Suh money.

  3. I meant that because we have a FB, like Felton, he would get the surprise carry in a two back offense that Boobie might get, lessening the need even more. And would get the short yardage action that Boobie might get if we didn't have a FB on the team.

Gotcha. Agreed we have 3 short yardage specialists between Felton, Karlos, and Boobie, with the latter two trying to make the 53.

I think Boobie's value, over Karlos (I think as I think you do too that both will be ST beasts), would be as a game day back up FB. As I said before I see him being able to fill two roles, and I think that would be valuable to Roman who likes to attack by disguise.

Good points and god I can't wait til TC.

  4. Karlos the short yardage kind of guy, plus a FB,

While Karlos looks powerful, I don't see him as a FB. I just don't think hes got the mass to take on a DL or LB in the hole. Hard to bring down yes, but not sure he'll be effective as a FB.

With that said, I think you make good points abou how Boobie could be odd man out; this would probably require Connor being brought to TC to be ready to go in case anything happens to Felton (I now don't think Connor makes the 53). Also there is always the fact that Roman and SF didn't resign Boobie. I still think Boobie will make the 53 though.

  5.

Only way Dixon is dropped is if The Terminator really shows up and locks down FB depth!

Dixon is pretty much a lock as backup FB, which we're obviously planning on using a decent amount (not to mention ST). Now if we do take Conner then do we drop both Dixon and Brown?!

Williams is almost certainly going to make it as well on upside/ST alone.

As long as Fred is the best blocker when we're going in the air I don't see him getting cut.

I agree with this. I feel as if Dixon will learn the FB role. His flexibility could be very helpful in disguising plays and confusion among defenses.

If Boobie is on in a 3 WR (Sammy, Woods, Harvin)/1 TE set on 3rd and short, there are 4 potential ball carriers (assuming Cassel isn't QB) and 2 potential lead blockers out of the back field. I like to think Roman wants this in his offense.

  6.

They just dont make pro ready QBs any more ever (Aside from a few exceptions)

    Fixed that for you

Yes. A bunch of mediocre players, besides Freddy, who is ancient, and Glenn, who had issues all offseason, played poorly. Great.

I don't begrudge you for buying into the Greg Roman silver bullet. I just don't buy it yet.

All the named players were on the offensive side of the ball. Including EJ, that's 9 players that regressed on one side of the ball (assuming you don't disagree that those players regressed). Seems to be indicative of a larger coaching problem.

But yes Roman may not be silver bullet to fix the problems.

  7.

    Facts thus far:

Aaron Kromer was arrested for battery with intent to harm.

    Alleged events:

Kromer confronts 3 minors over beach chairs.

Kromer goes off the rails throws fishing poles in water.

Kromer punches one of the minors in the face.

Kromer says "I'll kill your family if you tell the police".

All of the alleged events have come from the 3 minors.

    Other things

Kromer was with his college age son at the time of the incident

Kromer will claim self defense (claims victims were belligerent and he had trouble seeing in the dark)

    Inferred

Confrontation likely occurred at night but before the 1 AM arrest

  8. Yeah. That might be a fair bit high. Suh's contract is freaking ridiculous. No way I go near that. OTOH if they are accurate for Glenn, I do that without blinking. Fans of teams with good LT play don't realize what a disaster it is without it.

Agreed. Glenn's I do immediately and I also would take the estimate for Bradham. Here's hoping the cap goes up pretty high. Also I think McKelvin is going to be gone if the Dareus estimate is right.

In Week 13, Jerry Hughes made Joe Thomas look like an ordinary offensive tackle. Here's a look back at some of his best plays from the game.

Great post thanks for the review.

For the first time I noticed Thomas after the fumble score. He's in the middle of the field looking very disappointed and thinking the play was dead. His hands are on his hips; he's shaking his head; and thinking about how he just got beat again (and called for his third holding penalty). Meanwhile Jerry is making the strip, picking up the ball, and starting to run towards the endzone.

  10. Good read on MarQueis' journey to Buffalo. I think he will get a lot of snaps this year (might even be our number two TE).

    http://bills.buffalo...ing-with-bills/

"At receiver in 2010, Gray caught 42 passes for 587 yards and five touchdowns. At quarterback in 2011 and 2012, he threw for 1,967 yards, rushed for 1,356 and scored 24 total touchdowns. Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill used the word “athlete” seven times in one response describing Gray’s game. In Kill’s first season, he insists Gray “single-handedly” beat Iowa down the stretch with his legs."

  11. Wondering what you guys thought of this.

Hogan, I envision, to be used more in 4 receiver sets because this personnel grouping will see more zone coverage, and his route running should have him open with our other 3 receivers out there. Basically obvious passing downs/formations I expect to see Hogan, and I expect to see him get a lot of targets because the defense will be keyed in on the other 3 receivers.

Goodwin, I envision, to be used more in 3 receiver sets because he can blow the lid off the defense and will prevent safeties from creeping into the box. The choice for the defense basically being try to stop the run and give up a shot to Goodwin over the top, or keep Goodwin contained and allow us to run. Putting Goodwin out on 3 receiver sets will also allow Harvin to rest, which I think he'll need because he will get some touches out of the backfield.

To summarize on second and short or first down, will be when Goodwin gets the bulk of his snaps. Hogan will see snaps in all situations, but I would be surprised not to see him on the field if its 3rd and long.

  12.

Seriously? I don't know that it really matter though as he will be challenged to make the team with the constant injuries imo. Wait constant injuries. You're right. What could happen lol

I agree he will be challenged to make the roster, but I have him making the 53. I don't get the how of him getting injured at a track meet. OTAs and TC are another thing, but is Goodwin's participation in track meets actually a thing posters are worried about. I think others need to get Yolo's chicken little avatar.

  13.

i think the only place we diverged we just happened to do so in a big way: was marrone holding the team back or did he deserve some credit for the first winning season in a decade. the truth undoubtedly lies somewhere in between,

'another?' i'm not sure i follow your point. do you mean to suggest that buddy nix habitually wasted draft picks, particularly first rounders? i think the evidence is more than clear at this point that from 2011-13, when nix had HIS guys in place, the bills were one of the better drafting teams in the NFL.

Thanks for the awesome work Big Cat, running the data and explaining the results. I plan on using that site to run some histograms. Don't know how to give you a big high five over the web. Do we have a like button yet?

  14. Don't mean to sound fecitious, but simply put, Red Zone scoring. Even with Hacketts game plans and injuries to RB & WR, we could still motor well 'tween the 20's. Unfortunately, Carpenter then became our biggest weapon.

I certainly expect better performance here this season!

I agree that has been out biggest liability.

Assuming we improve on this metric, I would say improving Yards Per Carry is second most important because improvement will help shorten the game and keep giving our defense rest.

    Good topic

  15. I think most backs get more than 5% of their yards on 5% of their carries. I don't think most good backs get 40% of their yards on 5% of their carries.

If we just get some data sets we won't have to speculate about what most backs do. I would be down to run the stats (we could even have 2nd person verification), but I don't know a good source for the data.

  16. Quinn's homework assignment: what percentage of yards do most backs get on their top 5% of carries? What's spiller done in past years?

Talk about an obscure stat that's worthless without context to benchmark it to

Nosaint you've piqued my interest. I think this would be worthwile data to look at. I would like to see a histogram of CJ's carries versus the typical back. I would imagine CJ's median is much lower than someone like Sproles. On that same note I think the data sets on CJ's carries under Gailey and under Marrone would be great to look at as well (and probably more relevant to TBD discussions). Anyone know where this data would exist?

  17.

The third back if its Boobie or Karlos will likely have some short yardage work.

I still think if Boobie can show that he could at a pinch play fullback if Felton goes down in a game (and thereby avoid half their playbook going out of the window) that goes in his favour of making the roster. I still see them keeping 4 backs plus a full back.

I agree. Boobie may not be the number 3 back, but I feel as if Roman wants versatility (and yes I know he cut Boobie in SF).
