  1. Not from me....always felt Brown was a good player....now the bills coaches? I dont know.

I know this.....would like to see more of Boom Herron

Not sure if its logical inconsistency or just the people talk more when they don't like the direction, but it definitely feels like there is mention of bring Brown back every thread. When he was here it was why haven't we cut this guy. Again not sure if its the same characters making the noise or different.

I thought Brown got a bad rap, but don't really have a desire to bring him back. Would really just like Karlos back.

  2. Crossman has to be on the hotseat. Schmidt is punting his way to the pro bowl, which is likely the only reason Crossman still has a job.

Still can't understand why we're hiring guys off the street to field punts (almost cost us the game yesterday with the fumble) when Percy Harvin is on the team.

I understand he's not normally a punt return guy, but how can he not at least be competing for the job these days?

I hesitate to put Harvin back there if Sammy isn't 100%. When Sammy comes back then I will ask why Harvin is getting some touches on PR (even though he has never returned a punt in his career)

  3. To say this line is a major dissapointment would be an understatement. Brady and Manning literally destroyed them!

This was to be the year that Brady was on his ass more than he was looking downfield, and he laughed all the way back to Chowdville after making them look like they never played before.

Brady lit them up as he has done to many Bills and other teams. Manning was 20-35 for 212 yards (almost 25% on one 2 yard throw) with 3 TDs. I don't think Manning lit them up. I have some reservations about the defense but I am in wait and see mode.

  4. I believe they can renegotiate but I don't know how anyone would be able to convince a player to take less money over a longer period of time. It's likely he will be released and not extended as a result of it.

I don't think they have picked up EJ's 5th year option yet so there isn't a renegotiate (I think this addresses your second point of less money over a longer period of time). They don't have to pick it either (as the word option implies). Just because they don't pick it up doesn't mean he won't play for us though. He could be extended on a new contract (at market value) or he could become a FA and still sign with us. I would like us to extend him without picking up the 5th year option. That option is really for first round draft picks that are successful (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

  5. Malarkey. If this had been Edleman and Gronkowski you'd be pitching ten fits. And you'd be right.

Have you Edelman/Gronk picks? They force contact with the DB. This DB takes a longer path to make a play on the ball because of Sammy's route, but he is not contacted. This was just poor coverage on a pick play. But this pick was not egregious at all.

If this were Edelman/Gronk I would be pissed our coverage was playing so far off. Oh wait I am pissed at our coverage in that game.

EDIT: Also if you think this should be flagged then I don't know what to do about any crossing routes. The nature of having all the route runners start on one side and try to get open in 2-4 seconds is that they will cross paths and be in clos proximity to each other.

  6. It was definitely an illegal pick.

The league needs to decide whether it is going to enforce that rule or not. Because you're right, Green Bay was running picks all night and rarely getting called. New England runs it 18 times a game. It's not legal. Sometimes it's called, sometimes not. It's maddening.

I don't see Watkins contact with Shady's man at all unless you are telling me you think they were going to play a switch (in which case I think the DB on Watkins messed up because he was playing outside leverage). Watkins contacts his man after 5 yards in what could easily be a route. Yes this is a pick route. But it is not egregious at all.

  7. I have to submit Bills' positional needs to DraftTek today. Here's what I'm thinking, but I value your input. TBD is the only place I go for input, BTW.

    OFFENSE

    QB=P4. Tyrod's looking downfield. He's 3rd in yards per attempt (9.15 ypa). He's accurate (3rd-most TDs, 4th comp%), efficient (4th in QBR).

RB=P9. Karlos is now 3rd as a runner, 4th in yds per attempt, has one TD is each game (first time in Bills history). Needs development as blocker (88th).

FB=P9 Felton helps in blocking immensely, saves wear and tear on RB (if McCoy gets healthy).

WRF=P9. Feature WRs. Bills have one of 3 youngest WR trios in NFL (Watkins, Woods, Harvin). Need to re-sign Harvin, though. Great depth, too.

WRS=P6. Speedy WRs. Harvin, Goodwin, Edelman, Landry types. Harvin was +2.4 Sunday and needs extension. Bills held Landry to -1.4, per PFF.

RT=P2; LT=P2; OC=P4. I'd feel better about OL if Cordy could improve run blocking and Henderson could be more consistent.

OG=P3. Incognito is #PFF's top-rated OG. John Miller was having best game when he went out with groin injury. He's already an above-avg run blocker.

TE=P6. Charles Clay's receiving has him ranked 11th right now, but has shown improvement each game. Now 2nd in broken tackles. Need depth late.

    DEFENSE

DT, DE=P3. This position is the oldest on the club. 5 of the 8 oldest players are DL. Need to maintain strength in line. Positions can be 43 or 34, but versatile.

OLB=P4, ILB=P6. Bradham and Brown are great, Lawson, too. Hughes is #1 DE in pass coverage, a consideration in Rex's scheme. Need depth. Tarpley-Johnson-Steward are young guns who may work out.

FS=P6, SS=P3. Again, depth behind Aaron Williams and Corey Graham needs a look. I like Rambo, not Meeks or Duke as much.

CB=P3. Rex will take a CB earl every year. Darby is rated 10th in pass coverage after 3 games. Avg QBR (Luck, Brady, and Tanny) was 31.8. Gilmore good.

Below are my adjustments. I like most of what you did.

RB=P6 (preseason has me scared of RB's going down)

RT=P3, LT=P3, OC=P3 (Basically we take best linemen available)

OG=P4 (I am assuming Cog is resigned)

DE, DT=P4 (while we are old I don't see us "needing" starter level production)

OLB=P3 (I know we have some young guys that might pan out be I think this is a priority)

ILB=P5 (I like the P5 category and was surprised you didn't use it. Think its perfect here. After round 3 Whaley will draft a good no name LB; plus Powell comes back next year)

Agree with the rest particularly CB because I think Leo is gone

  8.

You have to have balance just like anything else. Stopping the run is still paramount to win in the NFL. A successful run game chews up the clock, keeps defenses on the field and wears them down. If you can stop the run and force a team to beat you in the air, you're doing all of the right things. There are more variables with a pass (int, tipped pass, sack, drop, poor throw, fumble).

Agreed there is a lot more than can go wrong/negative with a pass play. This is why a solid run game is great. Force the other team into the riskier facet of the game while you get yards/points in the safer approach.

To the comment up thread that only Seattle can run the ball, I would point to SF when Roman was there as well as the Cowboys success last year. There are still many teams that use the run effectively. I agree the pass is more important, but dominating the run can have a profound impact.

  9.

I don't know about that. DW had darby as best player available and by a large margin.

What gets me about Whaley is that he nailed Watkins in saying there wasn't a large gap between him and the rest of the WR's but still went full derp.

I'm going to assume that Whaley new before the Watkins pick that 2015 was a down year. So he knew he would move up for the most potential in the draft using his 2014 first round choice if it became available. I like the choice. I don't think we missed much in the 2014 first round.

  10. That is soooooo untrue.

Enormous difference when it is 2nd and 7-8 versus 2nd and 4-5.

The huge difference in the bills defense last year versus 2013 was the ability to stop the run.

Agreed. Also important if you're down in the 2nd half. Brady and BB had to pass at the end of last game because the run was so ineffective. That kept us in the game; although not enough. I honestly think if they had gone to a run centric offense we would have completed the comeback.

  11.

The way I've seen other teams handle the interior problem is to keep an extra TE in to block on the edge, and having the OT on the strong side squeeze down immediately on the snap to try to chuck the interior rusher closest to him. The TE, in turn, will take an initial pass set a bit wider than would be typical in an attempt to force the edge rusher inside, where the OT can re-direct outward to catch him. This effectively double-teams 3 pass rushers using 5 blockers (G-C combo on one interior rusher, G-T combo on the other, and TE-T [same T as second combo] on the edge rusher), while leaving the other edge rusher 1-on-1; 6 to block 4. You're right that the blitz can totally hose this up, requiring an extra back to stay in and block, so now you've got 7 to block 5, which leaves Brady**** with 3 targets running pass patterns and 6 in coverage.

I think they're better off trying to get more players in pass routes and into space than trying to win with numbers at the LOS.

Thanks. This could work (I was trying to think of ways to free up the Tackle) but I would be happy if a TE is staying to block (or even to chip), and I really like the idea of Mario or Hughes rushing against a TE.
