A fair take, but it's also worth noting that there's still work to be done.

I’m not sure it matters for Beasley. I see him primarily as a man beater in the short area. Only people reading the QB eyes in man are robbers or single high safeties. I don’t think either are making a play on that ball. Lastly if it’s an option route doesn’t he need to read the cut?

Well, as they say, you create your own luck/chances.

Point being, and as you imply, Beasley is and always has been a short-route slot-receiver.  That's not Allen's forte, actually it's his biggest weakness.

Other aspects of our passing game may be better this season but if I had to lay money it wouldn't be on that aspect of it.  That would be the last area that I would bet on.  On the other hand, if Allen does it, his accuracy and completion% issues will likely be solved.

Let's just hope that Beasley isn't eating his words this season.

Be a nice change of pace to see some offensive competence for once.

Agree the short game is his biggest weakness. But this is one of the reasons I like McBeane. They addressed his biggest weakness with a good player. Is cole gonna have the stats he had in Dallas? Maybe not. Is josh gonna have better stats on the shorter throws? Probably cause Beasley gets more separation than all our previous receivers. It was moves like this that the fan base is getting behind.

It is literally in the first line...In a thread with like 2 replies, that answer would have taken about 5 seconds.

Yup sorry about that.   Got distracted by the chart which had some really funky things going on.  I'm sorta trying to ask how much this actually points to real "aggressiveness."  Feels like there are a lot other variables involved like system (how often are you asked to throw anticipation throws) and receivers ability to get separation.  Sorry I missed that definition.

Your point is well-taken about completion percentage not equaling accuracy, but I'm not sure there's a better stat available to gauge accuracy.  I'm looking forward to the division games.  Even if I'm not sold on Allen yet I think the Bills are building things the right way.

There really isnt a better gauge is the problem.  You would have to put them in shorts and let them throw to really know.  I think Josh scores well in those situations actually (he seems to be really good at hitting cross bars from time with Simms and Dilfer).  The  processing and system is what drives a lot of this.  The point about extrapolating Dak's attempts from LOS to 10 yards for Josh was great.  He attempts throws down field and it drives his numbers down.  I dont agree with every play ronin identified but there are some plays he should hit the check down.

If you compare the notes after each timeframe with the actual footage he's analyzing, you might find that it's less of "great breakdown," and more of a crusade. At best, it is biased. Frankly, I found it dishonest.

Yup.  I did the analysis and many of the throws to the flats were not that open (in the 0:27 play Shady is pretty clearly being covered).  Couple of situational things too (whos gonna hit a guy in the flat on 3 and 20 or throw to the RB in the middle of the field with < 1 min).  Generally I agree his hero ball needs to stop and that should be correctable for such a raw prospect (the PFF guys contend if he hasnt learned now he never well, but I'm not so sure).  Take away hero ball and have his receivers help not hinder him would go a long way.

It whistles for sure, but it also has that Byron Leftwich "hum" to it too...it's like a whistlehum.

    Is that a thing?

The videos in these tweets are funny cause you can pause it and Barkley is winding up while Allen is chilling. Then advance to Allen’s receiver catching the ball before Barkleys receiver. That load to target time from Josh is insane.

Without seeing the story you are specifically talking about, this can't really be discussed.

I googled "four small steps out cut" and got nothing to do with sports. Then I added "football" and got a lot of soccer stuff. What specifically did they say? Where did you see it? We need to see the exact words to know what you're really referring to here.

Generally, though, yeah, route running is immensely technical and guys who are really good at it gain a real advantage over DBs.

I know there was a cover 1 video or two (one was foster I think) that referenced the quick 4 steps. Those guys are usually on point so I’m gonna defer to them.

Ok. So the link is interesting and does provide some insight. There were several occasions in which Star was doubled and several where he was not.

What I do notice is that the double teams don't last long. They pretty quickly have him contained and one of the blockers moves on to a secondary target. So while that does provide value in slowing the play down, I don't see it as a traditional double. He clogs space. I get that. It'd be great if he could clog space and get a few TFL's or maybe even a sack. His teammates speak glowingly of him, so there's that.

And I remember the game well. Cordarrelle Patterson was out there looking like Todd Gurley. Seems to me that BB took advantage of Edmunds youth as well as Milano's absence.

Yup they were definitely not all doubles. The others are chip blocks. It could explain why LBs had trouble flowing to the outside but star did seem to hold the middle down based on the ypc.

His sheer mass dictates that two men will often be engaged. Not a classic double team per se. I'm pretty sure opposing teams are not intentionally dedicating two blockers to a guy who never makes plays. And yes, Belichick basically ensured that Star would be singled up by Mason. One of the many reasons we got steamrolled in that game.

    Exactly.

You should check the article @thebandit27 linked.  The eye popping part to me was that Pats averaged 3 ypc in the middle and 10 to the left outside and 6 to the right outside, iirc.  Also the article clearly showed Star being doubled, chipped, or trapped (Belicheck game planned for star in the middle of the field, rather than let just let Mason take him 1v1).  Star doesnt seem to be the reason we got ran over in that game.

I expect fewer interceptions this year.

    • He tried to be the hero when far behind scorewise; to wit his throws into coverage and failure to use checkdown. Expect closer scores, less heroics.
    • He has better targets.
    • He'll have more time.
    • I expect he's done something this offseason to improve accuracy.

I agree particularly because he didnt have any 1st quarter interceptions. That should also indicate some hero ball.

It was always going to hinge on Knox? The plan was to count on a guy who didn't catch a single td in college? Why did the Bills make Kroft the 12th highest paid te in the league if that was the plan?

Why did the Bills pay Kroft so much? What has he done to justify being the 12th highest paid? He played in 5 games last year and caught 4 ***** passes. Ridiculous.

They can get out of Kroft contract pretty quickly (year 2 iirc). If you think he was the long term solution and not Knox then you’re not seeing the process. Yes Beanes plan to address the TE position long term hinges on Knox. I think a draft choice in this deep class was always the long term solution.

Didn't like the signing and this injury comes as no surprise. Some guys just can't stay healthy and Kroft seems to fit the mold. Availability and all that jazz. The TE position is likely to hinge on whether Beane got the Knox pick right. Still, it'd be nice for THIS season IF Kroft can at least get back on the field. Tough to expect a raw rookie to step right in.

TE was always gonna hinge on if Knox works out. Agree that this is a set back because it means more lee smith. I was ok with the signing considering how deep the class was at the position.  Hopefully they can hold it together at the start of the season and Kroft is back for the tough stretch at the end. I was expecting a lot of empty sets based on last year so maybe daboll will go back to that.

    My guesses:

Dawkins (left) and Nsekhe (right) at the tackle spots.  Ford could play his way into the right tackle spot, depending on how ready he is.  If that's the case, would have Nsekhe as a versatile backup.

Center is obviously locked up by Morse and backed up by Bodine.

The two guard spots seem the most up in the air.  Spain (left) likely will take one of them.  The other will be up for grabs, but I would guess Long ends up playing rg for the season.  It's possible we see Ford here too, but from what Beane said.. it would appear that they are going to try him at RT first.

Feliciano appears to be the back up to Morse because hes with the ones today.  I think Bodine is gonna be traded for a mid-late round pick.

Because the 5th year option already has him being paid as a top 10 DLineman at north of 14 million per year.

L Williams is a good player, but he is not open of the top 5-10 players in the league and to extend him - they are going to need to give him a huge contract that they do not feel he is worth.

It is very similar to the Shaq Lawson situation in Buffalo, but the Bills chose not to give the 5th year option that would overpay - allowing them time to negotiate a contract more in line with play.

The Jets gave the 5th year option and now have a guy that they feel is overpayed and it will be harder to negotiate a new deal at significantly less than he is making this year.  Therefore - they will let him go test FA and see what he is worth and they stand a big chance at losing him.

This is a continuous challenge for teams that draft high year over year because the option is a big pick-up for guys that are average - therefore they lose these guys rather than resigning them.  It happens at most positions when these teams struggle for extended periods.

Gotcha missed the 5th year option.  Agree hes not a top 5-10 player.

Still looks silly though to give him his 5th year option when hes not a top 5-10 player.  Feel like they could have not given the 5th year option, drafted Allen, and then tried to negotiate a contract.

    Thanks for clarifying.

OR - it could be said they felt L. Williams was only there for 1 more year anyway and got his replacement- rather than a top quality DE like Allen.

You could sign L. Williams to another contract; why do you need to replace him?  If you do sign him then you have him and Allen.

In the end good for us cause I think if they take Allen then the Raiders take Q Williams and not Ferrell which probably would have not cause Oliver to drop to us.

Very optimistic, but as many have pointed out, it falls on Allen. If you look at the list of recent Super Bowl champions, outside of Young and Wilson, almost none of them were mobile. At nearly a 100% clip Super Bowl winning QB's won in the pocket.  Even in the case of Young and Wilson, Young was still great in the pocket, Wilson was improving and had the best defense of his era backing him up. You could go back to 2001 or 2003 Baltimore Ravens or Tampa Bay Buccaneers teams, but again, two teams that had legendary defenses. Also a time in which it seemed like a truly epic defense could get you there. It's just not like that anymore. All recent Super Bowl winning QB's have won from the pocket. That's all I care about seeing from Josh this season. The last pocket QB we had that could get the ball downfield was Bledsoe and even in his frequent horror show the 2004 Bills losing to Pittsburgh's back ups in the last game of the season to miss the playoffs remains the best Bills team since the drought began.

Rodgers Roethlisberger and even Foles was running RPO are all mobile.  Is it just skewed by Brady and the Manning Brothers winning so many?  I agree you need to be good in the pocket but a lot of mobile QBs win (or get to) the Bowl.  I'm not really considering Dilfer or Johnson as mobile.

I would argue the 2015 Broncos Defense carried Manning versus him "winning" from the pocket.  There are many ways to win or get to the Super Bowl; however, I would agree that having a great pocket passer is the most common method.

The Texans put the franchise tag on him for this year. No way the Texans are trading Clowney to the Bills for anything less than a 1st rounder, and no way Beane is willing to trade a 2020 1st when that pick will likely become an elite WR talent at a rookie salary. Most likely, the Bills will attempt to sign Clowney next offseason with the $80+ million in cap space they currently have (that's not even including the rollover cap space from this year).

By the way, does anyone know how exactly the rollover cap rules work? The Bills are $30 million under for this season. Do they get to rollover all of that for 2020?

Basically. They will likely use some for mid year signings and the rooks will be a bit but yeah it rolls over.

Just from his highlight reel, though I guess that was most of his catches last year:

    • Hands look great.
    • But man is he a lumberer. It's a bit painful watching him try to make any kind of cut or move.
    • He also seems to get hit HARD.  He doesn't go down right away, but the first hit seems to cave him in and he sort of flails around and stumbles, usually going to ground pretty soon. Doesn't seem to deliver many blows the other way. (Again, maybe a blocking cutup would show him as a punisher - don't know, but I doubt it.)

He doesn't really feel like an NFL athlete to me. Except for those hands. Which may be enough with old rocket arm Josh. I predict practice squad.

I agree with this assessment, but I wonder if/hope an NFL weight room might do something to help his explosiveness.  BC primarily runs the ball so maybe he hasn't conditioned his body that way yet.  That would be great considering his hands (the full layout catch was very nice).

I don’t know what to make of Knox.  Looks like an overgrown WR. Incredible athelete for a tight end bigger dude. Can’t find anything about his blocking though

I've heard good things about his blocking (I'll try to find reference) which was surprising to me since he was a former QB.  I think both of these TEs were good pick ups.  It was a very good year for TEs so hopefully we found 2 good ones.

I think we're looking at Kroft, Croom and a battle between Sweeney and Dawson for the roster spot. Loser goes to the PS. I can see Fisher getting cut.

I think there is little chance Knox makes it to the PS.  Someone would probably pick him up.

I think we drop Dimarco and keep 4 TE's.  Fisher and Sweeney battling for the last spot but Fisher loses pretty clearly.
