If I were a Pats fan I would want Buffalo to win so NE can get control of the #1 seed if they beat KC. The Pats have beaten the Bills 28 out of 30 times or something like that. I would think going to Baltimore for the playoffs would make them nervous considering what happened a few weeks ago.
I think they are nervous in general. I think they know theyve needed blocked punts to win a couple of games and that they are not dominating like they have historically. If I were them I would root for the Ravens cause losing the division is a very real possibility with how theyve been playing lately. Im gonna check the chat out but its probably a very interesting debate for them.

Forgot about Oliver’s draft profile until last week but he definitely plays up to spotlight. In college some of his best games were in the biggest spotlight. In particular I remembered one of the games was the last time he played Lamar Jackson in his heisman year. Country Ed had 2 sacks and three TFL. Hoping he manages to take his games to another level this week.
-
@daymanPatriots have to lose two more games than we do because the tie breakers in the most likely situation go to them.
that said just beat the ravens. If we do that then I think the rest of the stars will align cause the pats look very beatable. Their locker room hasn’t been fun after wins this year and I can only imagine what it’s like this week. Let’s hope the patriot way causes an implosion.
-
Really hope this injury bug bites NE and they drop two before playing us cause Texans and chiefs aren’t pushovers. If we can magically pull out a W next weekend we would be set up to take the mantle. Probably won’t happen but OMFG it’s not an implausible thought this December!

First order of business is:
Poyer
Lawson (if they want to retain him)
Jordan Phillips
I see Murphy and Kroft being let go this coming offseason to apy for the above three. Alexander's modest contract also comes off the books as he is retiring.
All three are going to demand top-5 money. These will be the extensions in 2020.
Then comes Milano, Dawkins and White. Again will be Top-5 (if not the highest) money in 2021. We probably will also have to extend Hyde and Hughes here.
And in year three we will have to pay Allen and Edmunds, I assume Star's contract will come off the books at that point.
You’re not letting Murphy or Kroft go this year as that would cost you money (Kroft) or give you minimum savings. I know Shaq is gonna wanna be paid but so many lolz if he thinks he’s getting top 5 money. Even Jordan Phillips probably shouldn’t be top 5 in money. If that’s their line I’m ok with letting them go based on the whole body of their work.
33 minutes ago, SoTier said:This post is mostly untrue. McDermott and Beane did NOT "inherit" a mess. They inherited a middle of the road offense that needed a QB and a good defense that needed better coaching. They created their own "mess" by choosing to cut current salary and collect draft picks without regard to cap implications. Brandon, Whaley, and McDermott let future All Pro DB Stephon Gilmore and two excellent WRs, Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin, walk in FA without offering them competitive contracts. In the draft, they chose to pass on two excellent QB prospects in order to trade back to take a replacement for Gilmore. When Beane came aboard, his first notable transaction was to trade Sammy Watkins so that the Bills had no reasonable downfield threat. He also traded away highly paid LT Cordy Glenn to move up in the draft to #7, which also incurred a major cap hit. The only player departure that contributed significantly to the 2018 dead cap problem that wasn't based on McDermott and Beane's personnel decisions was Wood's retirement due to injury.
One alternative to what Brandon/Whaley/McDermott did in 2017 would have given the Bills much more talent today. They could have chosen to pay Gilmore and taken either Mahomes or Watson, both of whom were better prospects and are currently better QBs, than Josh Allen --- and both have as much leadership skills as Allen. They could have chosen to let Gilmore walk but re-signed one or both of Woods or Goodwin. That would have still left the Bills with a viable WR corps even after they traded away Watkins. They wouldn't have wasted a third round pick on Benjamin and they could have kept Ronald Darby instead of trading him away for Matthews.
Another alternative was for the Bills to keep Tyrod Taylor, not take the cap hit, and not sign AJ McCarron. Or if they just HAD to get rid of Taylor, then they should have named McCarron starter not had a rigged competition where McCarron and Allen played against first teams while Peterman played against scrubs so that he looked "better".
Moreover, McDermott and Beane WERE given a "blank check" -- and they made lots of faux pas. Don't pretend otherwise. The current team is about at the same talent level as the team that they inherited with the exception of QB and coaching.
The jury is out on the Bills right now despite their big win against Dallas. It's very likely that the Bills make the playoffs this year but there's no denying that they've been the recipient of some really good luck -- an easy schedule and some opponents' misfortunes (injuries, illnesses) and miscues (poor kicking) while largely avoiding major injuries to key players themselves. They have also only played 1 truly top class NFL team this season, NE, and they've lost to 2 of the 3 other talented teams they faced (Philly and Cleveland).
Nobody knows if they're good enough to go with the big boys of the AFC like Baltimore, KC, Indy or Pittsburgh much less whichever bully comes out of the loaded NFC.
Agree mcbeane created this “mess” but your hindsight game is silly to me. A couple of those moves I agree could be seen as letting a good player (Gilmore) but at the end of the day they have gotten us into a really good position for the future. I never felt that way with Whaley. So yeah they tore it down but damn if the rebuild doesn’t look good.

Ty is done for the year and he very well knew it when they took him off the field. You could see it in his face. Our depth at Tackle was always a question going into the year and unfortunately the worst has happened. Ford will be fine and Bates is questionable at best, but he is now the man. It will be very hard (impossible ?) though to find someone capable who can learn the offense and play with 6 weeks to go. They are really looking for a backup to Bates at this point.
As for Henderson, no thanks. He has had plenty of chances here and he is unlikely to get one more from this management team.
I thought we had adequate tackle depth going into TC. Losing Waddle and Ty is rough, but hardly the worst that could happen (thats losing Dawkins). I think they can find someone that can learn the system and be better than Bates for 6 weeks. We need a back up not a starter so he hopefully shouldnt have to play.

Not sure we need to invest much in run stuffing DT. It seems more a need this year than in the long term. We may already have one with Harrison. And they should be able to find another big body later in the draft. Also resign Phillips.
-
Agree on the negativity. Almost had my soon to be brother in law taking swings at me because I threw some facts at his narrative that Josh Allen is the worst QB and shouldn't be in the NFL. Allen is average right now, which based on last year, pre draft expectations, and what he needed to work on, is great.

This is great. Does a nice job of breaking down some of the things the Bills are doing on defense.
Course, his #2 example is a Fail what with Fitzy escaping and racking up some yards....I am sure Wentz would love to do likewise
Meh. It was 3rd down and he didn’t make the sticks. I’ll take it. Fail is the TD scramble.

Here was a stat I was interested in. % drives that end in a 3 and out. We’re first with 37.3% and second is the 49ers with 28.3%. I think this a huge number. In the last 5 years I didn’t see a team above 34%.
This 3 and out rate could be why we don’t have so many gaudy numbers in sacks and turnovers. We force a lot of incompletions and then 3 and outs.

Kroft got the Targets because Tyler Eifert missed the season with Injury.
So Once Eifert hurt they had no other TEs.
IN 2016 Eifert got hurt as well and Kroft still brought next to nothing
So his ONE very pedestrian year he had was due to a Eifert Inj.
Yes definitely got the opportunity because Eifert was injured. My point was more about him actually getting open when he got the opportunity. I can definitely appreciate your opinion that he was a good signing that doesnt look as necessary now because of Knox and Sweeney. I suspect he will be an upgrade when he comes back and don't think he should be IR'ed (I'm not sure it was even you who said it).
-
I would give Kroft Sweeney's snaps and some of Knox's.
You're sure Sweeney is a better blocker than Kroft? Also maybe Kroft was earning targets more than Sweeney (also could just be the Cincy offense)?
Either way definitely don't IR him thats silly cause it doesnt save you any money and I'm not sure theres an upgrade out there. I think hell be an incremental upgrade over Sweeney and Knox. A two TE set with Kroft and Knox has me super excited. They can both run routes and will put a ton of stress on the defense. I don't think Sweeney is putting that stress on the defense yet (very excited to see him develop though).

My comment was in response to what Shrager said. You're the one that's editing it. Having said that, I would agree with your opinion on the Pats. However, I would disagree regarding the Chiefs. The Chiefs D could not stop the run to save their lives. The Colts only needed 19 points to beat them. KC was incapable of putting up points at will. They managed only 13 on the night, playing against a decimated Colts defense, BTW. That's why the game was so shocking.
We're talking here about the way teams are built. You are right, the Bills would lose in a shootout. They're not built for that. They are built with the defense as the stronger side, so that the likelihood of a shootout is diminished. I will give you, though, that their offense is below average at present.
KC is built with the offense as the strong suit, but they can be stymied as seen last night.
The Pats, are incredibly balanced. They are also not built for a shootout, per se. They also don't beat themselves. They're capable of beating you with coaching.
I’m actually not convinced the pats offense is that great and they definitely are not balanced re: offense versus defense. That offense has the benefit of playing Miami Jets Skins and Steelers. That’s far from a murders row. I will be very interested to see how that offense performs as the season goes on.

Interesting that they waived Quessenberry. He has been active for them and even caught a TD. Feels like it’s odd that an OL would catch a TD and be released in the same year.

I took the premise as not about whether the Bills could hang with them but about being good enough to beat them.
Bills get another shot at the Pats* this year. I'm hoping for the W.
Yeah I forgot the exact language the but the comment about losing it immediately didnt quite jive with me. It felt in the first quarter like it was gonna be a blow out, but at the end of the day we were right there (and thats with the disastrous first quarter).
-
Yeah I don't get the comments about not being able to hang with either team when we did just hang with the Pats. I get it was at home but we more than demonstrated we should be in the talk. Whatevs well see them come around as the season progresses.

Not to the question of why weren’t getting points (I agree with TOs, sacks, drops, and penalties), but I think with this defense that offensive yards matter more than other teams. More yards mean more first downs which mean more rest for the defense. Feels as if we are way better in the 3 and out stat than last year and it’s helping our defense. Once this offense gels I think the points will come.
-
3 that we win 7 that we cover the spread. To much variance in our play and honestly a lot unknown about the patriots. I think our offense is better (again more variance) and not sure where our d is relative to theirs (again unknown) but it’s close.

throwing to Knox could have been intercepted if the defender jumped the route. ?
Sheesh what a silly argument. Thanks for coming to my aid. I thought I was crazy.

We have tried blitz heavy approaches. Pettine had a modicum of success back in the 2013 opener with a blitz heavy approach but the second time we played them that season they killed us with draws and delayed hand offs. Rex was blitz heavy a couple of times against them too (though not every time) and we still got picked apart. We do have something to lose - the game - so we have to try and find the gameplan that gives us the best shot. I don't believe that is a heavy blitz package no matter how much fans might think that is aggressive and exciting.
I think there are advantages of calling deep routes - obviously if we connect there is big play potential but it also clears stuff out underneath for Allen scrambles. I think he could have a big day on the ground but not on designed runs - on scrambles. Call verticals but be clear with Josh if it is not there he can set off.
Yeah josh taking off would be a good way to beat cover 1 with those routes. I also like the idea of running this from 12 personnel because it’s hard to match personnel. I really can’t wait until Kroft can go. This offense might hit another gear with him
-
@GunnerBill what do you think of running 4 verticals out of 11 personnel?
Brown foster jones Knox would be pretty good. I think you might even be able to get Beasley in on it. Would have to adjust when the hoodie goes to quarters but I think it could be pretty good.
Now that I think of it 4 verticals could be work out of 12 personnel.

Okay, this means nothing, but...
I woke up this morning with the unshakable feeling that we are going to beat them...no clue why, because I really don't see how that happens.
For the record, the last time I can remember feeling like this before a NE****** game was back in September of 2011.
The way I see it happening is if Josh has no turnovers.
Both defenses are great and can generate turnovers essentially making it a wash. However I think our offense might have more weapons than theirs. If we cut the costly mistakes I think we get the job done.

right... so if foster(a less developed wr) can get one over on him i would think ole smoke may be able to pop that top, as db's need to respect his route running ability much more than foster.
it'll be interesting.
Agreed. Cover 1 was discussing how they think Brown can get the comeback against Gilmore too. I think they made a Bet on it during their podcast. Would be very happy to see Smoke get behind Gilmore a couple times.

I’d like to see a bit more scoring quick strike ability as well but I will say the balance between run and pass is probably a good thing for our young qb at the moment.
Agreed. His processing seems to be speeding up. I honestly think he’s pretty smart as well as having a cannon, legs, and leadership. He got a 37 which was the highest in his class on the wonderlic. The josh Allen or josh Allen segment with Simms also showed some quick thinking. Can’t wait to see him progress this year.

What are our offensive and defensive game plans to beat Baltimore?
in The Stadium Wall Archives

Could argue the opposite. Were treating them like a option college offense and if any team is disciplined enough to beat that I think its our defense. For me its really the offense. I think theyll get 20-25. Can we get 25-30? I'm not sure I see us getting their, but if we do then I'm pretty sure the stars have aligned resulting in a Pats loss to the chiefs.
