But he only comes in on passing downs as a sub package?

Davis hurts the run game, and Rapp does play in the box quite a bit. But if we are going to be missing a WR and have a banged up secondary and missing a WR, against Pittsburgh in what looks to be a very windy game is likely the best place to do it.

Can you provide cause all i have seen and heard is that in the dime package they sub off Dodson and Poyer plays beside Bernard while Rapp plays safety with Micah.

  2. I’m definitely not taking Taron off for a LB. Agree with everyone saying taron is great against the run, and our next LB up is not gonna be as good overall.

if taron comes off I want a iDL in. Poot Ed DQ and ford in the middle with Rousseau and Shaq/Floyd in a bear front against 13 and maybe even 12 personnel (Washington might be too much for us to run nickel). If they wanna throw drop into a cover 3 with one of the DEs covering a flat or hook to curl.

I think this is the chess match of the game really. If they play 11 cool we’re in nickel and I trust our DL with single high coverage to stop the run. If they lean into big personnel to run as people expect how do we counter.

Yeah our local media is blissfully unaware of what @HappyDays has reported and is just going day by day checking to see if these guys practice.

They've turned every show into breakdowns on the weather and whether or not the Steelers fans will travel well.

Meanwhile we have 8 guys not practicing for this game.

so by 8 you mean 5 (from yesterday) of which 2 were vet rest days?  just cause they werent seen during media portion doesnt mean they aint practicing.

Dumb question, as someone might know better than me: do the Steelers have a full time fullback? I know Gilliam here works out with the TEs and there is overlap, but when I look at their roster I see one guy who is supposed to be a TE/FB hybrid and someone on the practice squad.

I know most games aren't won or lost on the quality of a teams fullback in this era of football, but it's a position whose value is a hill I've set to die on, and we have a pretty darned good one in Gilliam. In weather like what it's looking Sunday, it might matter.

(Ask me to go on my FB tract if you like :D )

I think lil Heyward is their TE/FB hybrid.

If it does snow, I think that will be a situation where it'll be much better to have Brady instead of Dorsey as OC.  Over the last year or so, and specifically in the "I don't watch that much film" quote, I've heard Allen said that they don't want to focus on what the other team does.  The Bills offense should just impose its will regardless of what the D is doing. Based on what I've seen on the field, I'm guessing that came from Dorsey and Allen was repeating it.  Dorsey seems much more willing to adjust based on the situation (eg, running the ball a million times because Dallas can't stop it).  I remember after the wildcard game last year, a Bengals player was mocking the Bills offense because they were running routes that are hard to run in the snow.  Keep it simple in the snow.  It's hard to run a double move, but it's hard to defend just a simple in cut because the offense player knows where he is going and doesn't have to try and cut as abruptly.  As someone pointed out, the Kelly Bills used to score a ton in snowy games.  Offense can be really effective.  The Bengal's point was that everyone knows the kind of routes you need to run on snow and the Bills just refused to run them.  That seems very Dorsey-esque to me.

Bit of this is substantiated.  I forget where I heard but someone commented that Brady is always looking for Waldo when he game preps.  Waldo is the guy they are gonna target.  In the dallas game Waldo was Bell I believe, and they ran right at him.  I think Apple was waldo against Miami because as soon as Diggs had one on one with him they took the shot,TD to Sherfield was targeting him as well.  This game I think one of the LBs will be Waldo and I think Cook and the DKs get going.

I did not realize Dodson was so fast.

As far as undersized, that's as may be and the weights on the team roster page or NFL stats are often draft weights and inaccurate by the time the guy's been in the league a bit.  But just based on those, Dodson is about our chunkiest (heaviest) linebacker.

I think there is a good discussion math bomb that could be had about his data set. Particularly about how players have changed. If we look at the last 10 drafts I don’t think Dodson would be undersized considering how much his score increased from 2019 (suggesting most players were below his 237 weight). I think the old school thumper LBs are skewing the dataset. What looks like meh size is probably above average considering the way the body type of position has changed with increase of spread offenses

Per your request to use RAS, his composite grading is below:

    Size: Poor

    Speed:Great

    Explosion: Good

    Agility: Very Poor

I don’t know what you’re arguing with me. Dodson has been a good starter for us this year.

I prefer he was playing. 100%.

But like I said in my OP, if we’re going to miss an undersized and fast LB I’m glad it’s against Pittsburgh in the rain and wind, rather than in Miami when it’s a perfect 70 degrees.

    https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=19786&ovl=Bills

That’s his RAS at time of draft. If you update it to the current database you see a change in numbers. Most particularly a big jump in his weight. Sorry size I was going with weight cause yes he is short. Are you only using height to see he undersized. I would say he probably is more dense than most too considering his height weight.  I find the change in weight interesting cause the database is always updating. His increase of 0.5 is very indicative that LBs are trending smaller. So in terms of weight not undersized. Lastly 5.00 is average so he’s above average. That might fall as poor in his categories but it’s average.

Edit he’s got ok size when RAS recalculated. Mostly held back by his height. Which is meh to me. If this was limited to players in the past 10 drafts I suspect his size would be good and not just ok. Also shuttle and 3 cone is why i didn’t consider him speedy from my eyes. He’s good in a line but wow change of direction bad as you note. Can’t believe you called very poor agility speedy

Why is it dumb? It makes sense to me.

cause after you see someone make the first down you should commit a penalty to stop the clock.  its weird but the dolphins benefited from this rule despite being the team that committed the penalty.  if we decline the penalty and got the first down on our own we should be able to burn the clock.  if we accept the penalty to get the first down then yeah it should stop.

Yes, he is 6'0 and ran a 4.6. He may play well against the run, but he is still undersized and speedy.

Appreciate the speed reference but gonna disagree that 237 is undersized.  That is above average for a LB all time per RAS and the league is trending down.  Also he is the heaviest LB on the team.  So yeah i dont like losing our heaviest LB that is good against the run.  Felt like you were implying that he was a coverage guy with the undersized and speedy comment.  I agree this is the game to choose to be missing coverage players.

I think if there’s a positive spin on some of these injuries it’s that we won and get to play Pittsburgh in what looks to be a wet, cold, windy game.

We can get by without a couple people in the secondary and an undersized, speedy LB in a game against a flawed QB in bad weather.

This would be tough to overcome in Miami.

did you just call dodson an undersized speedy LB?  cant believe im saying this after his preseason, but i want him for this playoff game.  Defending the run is what he does best (he comes off the field on passing down because he is not a speedy LB that covers well).  Agree with your overall point that this is the best situation to lose secondary players for.

Well, is quite possible that we are a "flimsy #2 seed." We'll find out on Sunday.

The Steelers are in the toughest division in the league with three teams in the playoffs and the fourth only eliminated in week 18.  Two of their teams running with backup QBs.

The Steelers are a physical, not a finesse, team.  They're only one game worse than us with a tougher schedule.

Ive been impressed with how physical we have been as well.  I think we were more physical than Miami and Dallas obviously.  but thought we matched the intensity of two teams that wanted to be physical (Chargers and Patriots).  Both teams seemed to want to punch us in the mouth and I thought we did a good job of responding (miscues didnt seemed to be physicality related).

The way we knifed through Miami's defense only to crap ourselves in the red zone...has become a bit of a trend.

I feel like too much changes down there, we take longer getting plays in, and we play a bit more on our heels. We need some good RedZone work this week and execution on our go-to plays.

The talking heads stress the INTs, but miss that Knox was obviously held on one possession, that pass to Cook that he dropped was so money, and Allen was half a second off from pulling the trigger and leading Ty Johnson in a way where I feel he gets in before the half.

They are really close and I think Allen is getting some of that swagger and confidence back that was causing him to delay throws a bit or turn down throws.

Been a while since he was himself and that is good to see. You could see the ball was coming out really good even when having to throw from odd platforms eluding the rush.

Other than that it was just having better execution and having some blitz beaters down there, some better blocking from our RB (asking Cook to pick up blitzers is hit or miss so maybe more Fournette down there) or go heavy max protect if you think plays are going to take time developing.

You know were one of the better red zone teams in the league right.  We struggled last two weeks but were still really good.  If theres a trend, its us figuring out our passing game.  havent heard any talk of Diggs missing in action this week when that was all the rage last week.  we missed some plays against the pats, and were really close against the phins (but our mistakes just all went as TOs).  Sorta think this is the week we put it all together.

There is little doubt that the Steelers will try to run the ball, then run even more, and keep running until the Bills can stop them, especially with the weather forecast. Plus it shortens the game and helps to keep the score close

They will probably come out in a two tight end set, and sometimes three.

I wonder if McDermott will stick to his lighter LB/DB base defense, or if he'll add the extra linebacker to stop the run.

Rudolph does chuck it occasionally, but I dont think of Pittsburgh as a throwing threat, particularly if it's windy and snowy.

Personnel is very interesting. I don’t know if they take taron off for Dorian Williams. If they do take taron off I would prefer an extra DL. Give me 3 DT (ED DQ Joseph sounds great) shaq with hand in dirt and Rousseau or Floyd as a Sam type. They have hade both of them off ball at times this year. With Bernard’s direction (really wanna hear how he watches tape cause he sees it all) and Spector I feel good we can stop any run game

Just for some context, Najee Harris has two games with over 100 yards rushing. They happen to be in the last two weeks, but two weeks ago it was against the Seahawks who have the second worst run defense in the league and last week it was against the Ravens backups. You can also run on the Steelers, who actually give up more yards per game on the ground than the Bills.

Agree you can run on them but some context.  yes they have more yards per game but they middle of the pack at yards per carry (better than us and only a little worse than us).  I think we have to score through the air though even though we can get yards on the ground.  they are third best in rushing TDs and middle of the pack in Passing TDs.  I suspect they use light boxes to get guys into coverage in the middle of the field but then stiffen up when they get to the red zone.

The Steelers also give up more rushing yards than the Cowboys...we did fine with the run game on them.

with no Watt I think it could be a problem for them. Clearly this isn't a lock and the Steelers are still tough

Cowboys had a major injury on the interior and got pushed around.  Heyward and Benton are not gonna get pushed around in the same way as the cowboys iDL i think.  though i hope we can pressure them on the edges more than we did miami because they are not as athletic in the back 7.

it’ll be Naji Harris up the middle.  The dude is a beast.  He’s hard enough to tackle without adding cold, wind and maybe snow to it.  The Bills probably wouldn’t do it, but I’d consider playing 3 LBs.

I get it but i dont know that i trust dorian to do it right now if Dodson cant go.  I would stay with taron just cause i trust him to be in the right run fit more than dorian.  would consider an extra DL and have rousseau or floyd play a SAM role though.  they have played off ball this year some.

I'm not sure it is. If tye Johnson catches that ball doesn't get whacked in the helmet and gets into the end zone then today we're talking about that play as being one of the plays that only Josh can make. But since it didn't work out it's shame on josh and he should have thrown to the sidelines. I'll admit I was upset about that play and wished we had at least 3 pts there. Thinking back in it I know I'd be super excited and proud of josh more having confidence and guys too. It's cuts both ways for me as fair or unfair as that is.

I think that play works except for a penalty that they didn’t call. It’s annoying that he gets concussed from the ear hole shot and it took points off the board. Hope it’s a fine.

I agree he's an outstanding blocker but if that's his #1 skill as our so-called #2WR, we're in serious trouble. I just can't watch Gabe run routes anymore.  Or adjust to pressure he can see is coming at Josh.  I'm rolling with Diggs, Shakir, Kincaid and Sherfield from here on out. I can live with a little less blocking.

Yeah blocking as your calling card is majoring in minor things as joe Marino would say. I think we need more separation from WR2. If you can get separation and block we’ll like Robert woods great. But you need to get open and catch primarily. In those two areas I think Gabe is below average.

  17. Interesting how quick the AFC south turned around to become a tough division.  I suspect not getting to play the NFC south brings them back down to reality quickly.

Also its super weird that the Lions won the division and are so much lower than the Packers.  I dont understand that really at all.  their records arent different enough to account for that.

I dont even understand why they care if people use streams.  I watch the commercials either way.  Yeah ratings might be down but im just as likely to see an ad and buy a product.  I assume that helps them set what they can sell the commercial time for.

Miamis gotta be headed for total rebuild in a couple years imo…that Shanahan system is high floor but pretty low ceiling and it just isn’t fooling the better defensive coaches in the league. They’re gonna lose some pieces if they decide to resign tua and really need a way to come up with elite defensive play but Howard is on the downswing and they got von millered with that Bradley Chubb knee injury.

McD is super good against shanahan tree.  i forget his record what it was before the season but there were not that many losses.  hes 3-1 already this year with wins over miami and NYJ.  I dont think anyone in the NFC East or AFC west run shanahans offense (every copies a bit though) and TB, CIN, Jax dont run it so 3-1 this season is pretty good.

Sure. I don’t know if jalen is gonna travel. People are expecting it cause he did with Wilson when Howard was out against NYJ. That plus diggs roasting them in the first matchup is why the thoughts. I do think they played diggs wrong in the first game

  23. So Mccourty has two examples of him not being out there on 3rd down and one of them diggs does a fair amount of work in the scramble drill.  The other i dont have context cause all he says he ran an over and came out.  This is silly to say hes being schemed out based on two examples.  give me more than just twice.
