How many decades now have we been hearing that because of all the youth soccer players (who weren't good enough to play baseball where the light is on you - and instead blend in on a soccer field) that soccer was going to become sooooo popular in coming years and decades. Why has it never happened? There is a wide age range here, and yet there are about 5 guys who can give a rat's ass about professional soccer here.

I linked to an article in Rolling Stone a year or so ago that talked about this type of thing. Kid was messed up..........But, it didn't really say how or why so much. What kind of issues did this guy have? At the time, was he acting like the "hero" as everybody says on these threads?

I'm actually wondering what the numbers are throughout the years, too.............Probably the opposite reason for you, though. I would think the adjusted for inflation number was much higher back in the 50s.

I really didn't hear too many (or any) people saying let Vanek go back then...........Everybody was saying "we have" to match the offer, including me.............Who cares about future draft picks when you just won the President's Trophy. I don't think this whole stocking up on draft picks is going to work at all, and it sure doesn't get me excited. If it was the NFL, I'd be like holy crap, we have all these picks. But, in the NFL, the high draft picks contribute immediately. In the NHL, a few elite ones will, but even with somebody as talented as Vanek (who went to college and wasn't 18), he was a healthy scratch in his first playoff run almost every game. So, this whole tanking idea and stocking up on draft picks is going to pay off in 5 years or so?? I'll be lucky to be alive!
