Dude... You just threw a grenade into the men's room and slammed the door.

I agree about the practice squad point. Probably get scooped up by somebody. As far as being shocked about getting kicked to the curb - I wouldn't be. Simply because of the new staff. If McDermott doesn't like Cardale at all and the Bills have four QB's in preseason, then it wouldn't shock me if he got cut. That would just tell me that these coaches think completely differently about Cardale than Whaley does. I don't expect it to happen, but it isn't far-fetched for a 3rd string QB to end up getting cut due to opinion of new coaching staff. I think he is more likely to remain on the team than getting cut but only slightly more likely. Well, it would be shocking if they cut him before camp this year.

Great post! You're absolutely right. Truth is that there are a handful of posters who jump in on threads and try to get everyone's jack up rather than trying to have a real conversation. That's all it really is. Changes the overall heat level of the board by a notch.

I disagree with how good you think the Bills would look under Hoyer. I think you will see more passing regardless of who the QB is even if Tyrod stays. However, if you have Hoyer back there passing the ball, fans are going to watch an offensive line that looks like it has regressed immensely in one single year. And people would be saying that our new offensive coordinator is a joke because he ruined a great offensive line. The running game would take a major step backward because without the extra long pocket time that Tyrod buys you, the deep passing threat would be almost non-existant. Defenses would put 8 in the box and blitz both run blitz and pass blitz a lot more often. And fans would be like WTF? our defense got a lot better and our offense got a lot worse in one year. Go figure..... Yeah I get that. It appeared that Lynn was high on the guy. Guess we will see after another preseason. If he is still on the team then the staff thinks he still has the potential to be a great one. Or maybe the guy earns #2 spot.

Your strategy has the words TANK written all over it in big freaking letters. And that doesn't sell tickets or merchandise or bring new fans to the team. How do you know this? The only person you could be speaking about is Whaley right? Because the other guys are gone. How do you know what this new coaching staff thinks about Cardale?

Fair enough. I have no idea what he was looking like in practice. My opinion of him is based only on what I saw of him in preseason and the last Jet's game which is a very small sample. Based on that very small sample, he looked better in the last preseason game than he looked in that last Jet's game. But to be fair, in preseason he was playing against other 2nds and 3rds compared to Jet's starters. So I guess there is that. I would be pleasantly surprised if he made it to the number 2 spot at QB this year. That would tell me that the coaches thing he has improved a great deal. I guess we will have a better idea after training camp and preseason. Or if he gets kicked to the curb before that, then we will know what the coaches and Whaley thought about his progress so far. Too bad we don't get to see those practices.

What big strides are you talking about? You continue to (teach him / coach him / drill him) and let him compete against the other quarterbacks you have on the roster. If he improves and keeps improving then you keep him and hope he can outplay whoever your starter is within the next 2 years. If he regresses without earning the starting position or if he just becomes stagnant where he isn't improving over a season, you kick him to the curb. With this new coaching staff - they might have different opinions of Cardale than the last staff had. So - you really don't know what to expect. He could become 2nd string or he could get cut. Starting Cardale is very unlikely based on his play so far. But pretty much anything else one way or the other is possible.

I forget which game it was but... They were giving something cool out when you entered the stadium. It was something out of the ordinary. Normally there are people handing those things out right as you walk in the gate. This time they were out of whatever it was they were giving away. My wife signed up to be a designated driver. If you signed up to be a DD, you got one the things they were handing out that day. The guest services booth still had plenty of supply. So I walked/stumbled my drunken beer/whiskey breathed self over to the DD booth and signed up as a DD. They slapped a wrist band on me. They gave me the gift item. I asked for 2 of them. They handed over the second one and thanked me for being a responsible driver. I was like (hiccup) yer weh come.

I spent a great deal of time searching around today looking for the exact details on The Bills Tyrod contract and options and everything because I thought I saw something previously about March 11th or 12th. It has been hard to find definitive information because I have conflicting information from various trustworthy sources. I have now come across this article on ESPN which states the dates are in fact March 11 which is not what it says on NFL.com. This is maddening and very confusing. Seems like a pretty good explanation here though - from that article: The Bills' extension with Taylor, signed in August, already puts the quarterback under contract for $27.5 million in 2017 -- a salary that is guaranteed if Taylor suffers an injury that prevents him from playing next season. The Bills have until March 11 to exercise an option on Taylor's contract that would trigger the 2018 through 2021 years of the deal, paying him $15.5 million immediately and lowering his 2017 salary to a fully-guaranteed $12 million. If the Bills do not exercise Taylor's option by March 11, then the entirety of his $27.5 million salary in 2017 becomes fully guaranteed March 12, and Taylor would be slated for unrestricted free agency after the 2017 season. The structure of Taylor's contract leaves the Bills with four choices: Exercise his option by March 11 for the 2018-21 seasons, reducing his 2017 cap number from about $29 million to $15.913 million. Decline to exercise his option but keep Taylor on the roster past March 12 at a fully-guaranteed salary and cap number of about $29 million. Release Taylor prior to March 11, carrying about a $3 million dead-money hit against the 2017 cap but opening significant cap space. Renegotiate Taylor's contract prior to March 11. I guess the confusion came in from thinking Tyrod's contract was a through 2016 contract when it is in fact through 2017. Guess that means the option applies to contract year 2017 instead of 2016. I guess that allows the Bills extra wiggle room the first few days of the 2017 contract year which is probably what Kirby was talking about above. Slowly becoming clearer. Good lord.

Yes. Well aged and very dry - like a good red wine.

You have officially confused me. And I didn't need much help getting confused. According to everything I have read today, which has been somewhat voluminous, the NFL forces options to be exercised before the tick of the new contract year. If they aren't exercised - then they are expired. Meaning Tyrod = free agent at that moment in time. As far as the dead cap money, I have yet to read anything about what you are suggesting in regards to payment. Everything I have read says - teams cannot trade away any of the signing bonus money. They have to eat it all. They can trade salary, but not bonus money which is $3-4 million per year prorated over Tyrod's 5 year contract extension which equates to the $18.3 million the Bills would be forced to eat. Not saying you are wrong. Just saying I haven't seen anything that points to what you just said - assuming I understood you correctly. Did you see that in writing somewhere?

Aged Cheddar and lots of it - my secret ingredient to award winning chili. If somebody else's chili tastes better than yours - just add more Cheddar to yours until judges agree yours is superior. Or just melt a pot of Cheddar, throw in a little meat, kidney beans and tomatoes - and call it Chili.

My response data here was inaccurate. Read lower in this thread for an explanation.

Yes. I believe you are correct.

I think people who have excellent paying jobs in positions of power try to remain in those positions as long as possible. Is it their primary factor in making a decision - most times no - but it depends on the situation I suppose. Only way I see the Bills going after Romo is if McDermott tells Whaley - you gotta get me this guy. And I can't see a scenario where McDermott does that. I would think McDermott would prefer a QB he can start building his system around. Even if it isn't Tyrod, I still highly doubt it is going to be Romo.
-
No he wouldn't get killed for missing the post season with TT at least not next year - more likely after 2 or 3. It's not the same comparison at all. Only way fans get mad at Whaley over signing Tyrod next year is if Tyrod gets a lot worse at QB next year for the Bills. That is nowhere near as likely to happen as Romo getting injured. In fact it is likely that Tyrod gets better - just a question of how much better. - Assuming he has healthy receivers that aren't dumpster divers. Romo is known/proven to be brittle at this point in his career. If someone acquires him and starts him and he gets hurt - everybody in the NFL will say - the GM should have seen that coming. That scenario has a very high possibility of happening.
-
Another thing to keep in mind is fans would want to run Whaley out of town if he either traded for or otherwise signed Romo and Romo ended up getting hurt badly enough to be out for the season. They would be saying it was the dumbest of all moves. And the NFL would make a general mockery of him for it being a poor decision. That scenario adds to the risk of him coming here or anywhere for that matter.

Yep. More things pointing that way. Am I the only one who thinks these newer styles of hats with flat brims and such are lame looking? I thought they had the cap right for decades when they were all like regular baseball caps. You guys dig these newer flat brim hats that have come out in the last 5 years or so? -
Wife says the Skyline Chili is at Wegmans near the other chili - same aisle as the Tuna fish. The only Kraut I eat regularly is the bag stuff - Bavarian Silver Floss (I think) - from Tops. Usually eat it with fresh kielbasa. I have had some really good homemade kraut from Spars European Sausage on Amherst St. near Grant St right off the Scajaquada. Their sausage is damn good too. Various kinds of German Brats and other sausages. I'll check out your link. Thanks.

This would be one really good reason to want to see Romo in Buffalo.
-
Yes. I Think you are right. It does make a lot of sense if the Bills wanted a one or two year QB before launching a rookie's career. You just have the risk of him getting hurt or retiring or his game play dropping off significantly due to age.
-
Nope my bad. I completely neglected the fact that he is under contract for next few years when thinking about what you wrote. Doh! You can basically disregard what I said other than the Kolb comparison thing. Looks like he would cost you $25 million against the cap for 3 years, then nothing. Tyrod would cost $16, then $17, then $17 then $10 to cut or trade after 3 years. Or yes, you could cut Romo after 1 year or 2 years because I think Dallas has to eat all that dead cap money. Seems as though you were correct sir. It does make a lot of sense if the Bills wanted a one or two year QB before launching a rookie's career. You just have the risk of him getting hurt or retiring or his game play dropping off significantly due to age.
-
It wouldn't be the same as Kolb unless Romo really sucked at quarterback, which I don't think he would do. Yeah, you could get out after one year if you signed him to a one or two year deal. Why would Romo want to come to Buffalo for just a year or two? Bills aren't close enough to a championship - or at least I don't think most people in the league would think they are. I think he would know that he is just a temporary gap filler QB if he came to Buffalo at this point with the new coaching staff here. How could he ever expect otherwise. Nobody is going to rebuild a team around a 37 year old QB. Do you think? Romo would no doubt rather go to a team that was in the playoffs recently. Don't you think?
-
Dude, you're like a Superbowl NAZI ! http://youtu.be/TLfmEZYdtrY

Yeah the 37 year old thing is another big knock against Romo. His game is going to drop off considerably any year now and it could be as early as this year. Nobody knows. Too big of a risk. No point betting on him at this point in his career. And didn't Whaley say they were building for the future? Signing A guy who is 37 and physically hammered is not exactly building for the future, at least not beyond a year. The idea of the Bills being interested in him seems like hogwash.
