[Slightly OT] Bills Grammys Nominee - Kelsea Ballerini
PolishDave replied to cale's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
She seems like an awesome person, makes great music and she is sexy as hell. I'm rooting for her. Happy to see more women like her make it in country music. Ye haw! -
That's not what I meant. I meant - If Pegula knows what Donald Jones said about coaches in the NFL. I didn't mean Pegula would supervise the position coaches in some way. However he could find that information out by having his own team hired trainers on staff who sit in on practices and training camp. In my opinion, the Patriots are as good as they are (on offense) because they drill the same plays over and over and over again year after year. At least that is how it appears to me. And they have a QB who can execute his part of the play with extremely high precision. And those plays are well designed plays that are very hard to defend when you are playing against a QB who can execute at his extremely high level. I suppose you are right. Coaches and players are just regular people. A lot of them probably do the least amount of work possible on and off the field. A small percentage of them try to become the best at their job.

Whaley wants Cardale to be 2017 starter
PolishDave replied to HumbleAndHungry's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You are suggesting that the Bills are hiding what an awesome player Cardale really is. What did they do, tell him to go out in that Jets game and play well below his true talent level so that nobody knows how good he really is? Whaley is playing peek a boo with the rest of the NFL? -
Teams obviously leave it up to the coaching staff. If I was Pegula and knew that some coaches didn't teach technique, I would make it very clear to my head coach that "not teaching technique" is unacceptable. I would also be tempted to hire ex-players (retired guys) as off season trainers who work one on one with existing players. I would provide the facility for them to do so. And I would leave it as an option for the players on whether or not to attend. That would tell me which players want to be the best at their craft and which ones want to put in the least amount of effort possible. Perfect retirement job for guys like Darryl Talley. Employed by the team to improve players every year regardless of who the coaching staff is. Permanent team trainers if you will.

Myles Garrett plans to stay at home for 2017 NFL Draft
PolishDave replied to papazoid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It would be hilarious if he fell in the draft all the way down to 27 where the Chiefs took him right before Dallas gets to pick. Just hilarious. -
Once Brady retires, it will be the end of dynasties for a while. Rotating teams in Superbowls most years = parity

Making decisions like it is Madden football is fun. But real NFL teams are run more like a business. There are negative consequences to throwing seasons away on a whim. -
Whaley wants Cardale to be 2017 starter

When watching the preseason games, it wasn't anywhere near close who the best QB was. Tyrod was moving the chains with ease while he was in there. It was incredibly obvious he was head and shoulders better than the other guys. It was exciting to watch where as the other guys entirely lacked excitement. Maybe we remember it differently. I don't remember it being close at all. I agree that the idea of starting Cardale is ridiculous at this point. It won't be ridiculous if he lights it up in preseason and ends up winning the start because he beat whoever the other guys are. But to be expecting Cardale to start (right now) with zero proof he is capable - is in fact totally ridiculous. -
Hope so. I was surprised at the emphasis Donald put into his explanation. In high school and college the coaching has a heavy emphasis on technique. Apparently by the time a player reaches the NFL, it is often times assumed his technique is good enough. Also explains why some young players (defensive pass rushers) will seek out training from a guy like Warren Sapp to coach them on proven techniques. I saw a television show where Sapp was teaching 1st year NFL guys from various teams - good pass rushing techniques. The rookies acted like it was all new to them and that they were hearing these things for the first time. I am amazed at the whole thing. When you invest hundreds of millions of dollars in players, why in hell wouldn't you be teaching those guys every single good technique used by every good player at their position in the NFL? I would think it would be a MAJOR priority for every single coaching staff. But I guess not.

Whaley wants Cardale to be 2017 starter

I don't think they would have made an announcement about it. They would have been asked about it when it happened. And then Whaley and coaches could have taken that opportunity to bask in the limelight - saying Cardale is developing faster than we expected. And it would have pushed Tyrod too. There is no good reason to keep a guy hiding in the shadows and farther away from a football field if he is coming on strong. The goal is to win games, especially during the middle of the season. As far as saying the guy is no good - I don't have any evidence to think otherwise. Do you? We haven't seen anything at all to say otherwise. And he couldn't beat EJ. So, why in the world would I or anybody else think otherwise? What evidence do you have that he is any good at all? College? Just because he was on a winning team in college doesn't mean he is going to be a success in the NFL. With zero NFL evidence to prove he is good, I am going to keep assuming he isn't very good. I hope he does become good - wicked good - as long as he is a Bill. I am just being realistic about what evidence we have seen so far. -
Listening to John Murphy show yesterday while driving around - I heard Donald talk about players being developed in the NFL. Donald said that "a lot" of coaches in the NFL do not actually teach technique to players. Instead they just make sure the players know the playbook. He explained that some coaches are more interested in keeping their job and moving up the ladder. That is the reason he used as why the coaches focus on the playbook. If you think about it, it makes sense. If a player has bad technique, the player gets blamed for failure. If the player doesn't know the play, then it looks like the position coach is not doing his job. Donald went on to explain that a lot of times, the player is what he is when he is drafted. And the player is left to succeed or fail based on his own ability. You would think that every position coach is there to teach proper technique and that would be their primary focus. Apparently it isn't. He did specifically credit Sanjay Lal (Bills wide receiver coach) as being a great coach who actually teaches techniques and route running. I wonder what kind of coaches McDermott has brought in here? Are they technique teachers or are they playbook guys? Explains a lot. And also explains why some players don't get better. I hope we have technique teachers.

I think you are inventing a scenario to fit your opinion of Cardale. Seems incredibly obvious to me that Cardale wasn't outperforming anybody. If he had been, the coaches surely would have moved him up a notch to number 2. It is crazy to think otherwise. No we can't play him because we just drafted him and he's not supposed to be ready yet? How absurd is that? You don't think the coaches and Whaley would have been happy to announce Cardale is progressing faster than we thought and has earned the move to number 2. Then we could realistically think he might have a legit shot at being a starter this year. Coaches and GM would be very happy to start a draft guy sooner if he was outplaying the other guy(s). Ridiculous to think otherwise. Oh, he is playing too well in practice. We better not let him play in a real game. Think about how ridiculous that sounds. -

If he is obviously better than EJ, then he still would have been made #2. They would have been naming him to the roster as backup and not dressing EJ. (especially while they were still in the playoff hunt) -

Its got zero to do with TT. Why are you trying to make it about that. Thinking about Cardale on his own merits, he is not a starting caliber quarterback at this point in his career. If he was, he would have been lighting up the Jets in garbage time in his last performance. And maybe he would have lit things up in preseason. Those are the only times we have got to see him. And based on those performances, it is blatantly obvious he is not good enough to start in the NFL at this point in his career. Maybe he becomes good enough. But right now I would say he isn't close. And I explained that he couldn't even beat out EJ for QB#2 on the Bills. That means he is bad, bad. because EJ is very un-special. Whaley knows all of this. -

The idea of Cardale being a starter in the NFL after what we have seen of him this year is completely ridiculous. Seriously. Come on guys. Nobody thinks this is a real possibility. Do you? Only way he would earn the start is if he improves drastically in camp and the preseason. He was the 3rd string this year. Friggin 3rd. He couldn't beat EJ. In my opinion there is zero chance that Whaley honestly wants the coach to start Cardale at this point. -

Yeah good strategy - throw up the white flag because the Patriots are in our division. Why even bother trying to beat them. ~ sarcasm -
I don't think 6-10 would be bad enough. A Browns like season 1-15 or 2-14 or 3-13 perhaps. 4-12 would be borderline in my opinion. Only an embarrassingly horrible year would get him fired if he stuck with current personnel. Let's put it this way - Do the Bills have better odds of making the playoffs in either of the next 2 years by building on what they have right now or by going with a rookie QB and rebuilding the team around that rookie? I think their odds are far better by building on what they have right now. Whaley says he wants to win a Superbowl. And of course he does. But deep down he knows that this team has to at least make the playoffs very soon (2 years at most) or else his head will meet the chopping block. Getting into the playoffs buys him extra years.
-
And if Talyor goes elsewhere and is successful there, then Whaley gets the boot too. The blame will fall on the bad decision at QB and his "bad" choice at head coach. Whaley's ticket to longevity with this organization is getting to the playoffs ASAP. Seems obvious to me the path they would take to get there.
