Possible Darkhorse FA QB's
PolishDave replied to Jamie Muellers Ghost's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Keep telling yourself that. Dennison's dolly is going to get the ax. He'll be in the unemployment line by the end of preseason next year. Trade him now while you can still get a bag of hammers for him. Hammers because they are useful tools not useless tools like Peterman. -
Yeah, but rumor is that if Shula comes to Buffalo we get Marino too. So..... That ends the whole QB problem eh?

Peterman won't be here. He is going to get cut because he sucks. When Dennison goes, he goes. Door in ass on way out. -

How about McCown, rookie and a bag of hammers. At least the 3rd tool would be useful. -

Yeah, I have no issue with him competing for a job as long as the money is cheap. If he breaks out, great. No idea what kind of money he is going to command though. -

I hope he stays too. Just pointing out that money trumps desires if the money is high enough. -

It is a business. It isn't about friendships and loyalty. Eventually you have to fire/cut guys you really, really like , respect and admire. -
2018 Veteran QBs - the Mega Poll
PolishDave replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My source was Wikipedia Steelers game 2015 = took over for Dalton in 1st quarter – lost 33-20 Then beat San Francisco 24-14 Then lost to Denver 20-17 Then lost to Steelers again 18-16 That is one win and 3 losses for AJ McCarron unless the info on Wikipedia is inaccurate. -
2018 Veteran QBs - the Mega Poll

I am thinking any quarterback from Minnesota is a better option. -
Funny thing is I believe we were having these discussions back in week 2 and so many people on this board said we needed to give Dennison a chance and that it was too early to be saying he isn't good enough. Turns out - he got the whole season (as he should have) and his biggest dumpster fire games of offensive production came towards the end of the season. Little did we know that we were seeing Dennison's GOOD offense at the beginning of the season. I just don't think Dennison is NFL caliber offensive coordinator material. Based on his history, he is only successful when an NFL hall of fame QB is running his offense. Hit the road Jack. And don't ya come back no more.

Alex Smith, assessment from a KC fan
PolishDave replied to Zerovoltz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bills should set their sites higher than Alex Smith. He's not good enough. The answer is in the draft. Gotta be one or more of them there this year - even at the position the Bills first pick in. Just have to do a better job of identifying and picking that person than the other teams do. Cheaper rental QB's are available that can give you as much upside as Alex Smith can. -
I have a feeling if he plays at his current level they will be tempted to keep him at least another year after next. Maybe not though. This year he wasn't any better than many off-the-street retread receivers that can be had for a dime a dozen. He was supposed to be an impact player right away. This is why draft picks should hold less value in people's minds than a proven player. With luck, he flourishes in a new system with a better passer.

Coming into this season I was hoping for the NFL version of backyard ball with Tyrod, McCoy and Watkins being the main offensive weapons. I wanted to see Tyrod running outside the pocket repeatedly by design - getting the defense to choose between tackling him or covering Watkins/Shady - and then watching Tyrod destroy defenses in the process. I think he has that in him - if he is partnered with the right coach - Anthony Lynn might be that guy - another year or two with him and who knows how it would have ended up. Instead we got the best backyard football QB being forced to play Tom Brady ball - and he failed. No big surprise. Although I did expect Tyrod to be a little better at it than he ended up being. Enough is enough. I'm done with the dual threat thing for a while. - It ran its course and predictably failed. Give me the best offensive line in football and a decent pocket passer who likes to throw deep please. Oh...And please, please give me an offensive coordinator who likes to have his QB throw deep regularly - early and often - even when winning a game. I am done with the guy who wants to stretch defenses horizontally instead of vertically.

Those discussions would have happened before McDermott agreed to hire Dennison. McDermott had to be onboard with whatever offensive ideas Dennison had - otherwise he doesn't hire him to join his executive team. But yes, as the season unfolded and Dennison was reluctant to revert back to last year's running attack while still trying to fix the passing game, then McDermott should have been much more involved and forced Dennison to do what was proven to work. McDermott shares the blame for that. He can fix it by admitting it was the wrong hire and moving on to someone he could have more confidence in as an offensive football expert.

2018 Veteran QBs - the Mega Poll
PolishDave replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What would make any of you think this guy is a good up and coming QB? He can't beat out Dalton for a starting job. He is not that good. Better than Peterman probably. Better than Tyrod probably. Good enough, probably not. He wasn't even a standout in college. He was surrounded by the best talent in college and was just a meh kind of guy. A game manager. Bengals lost 3 out of 4 games he started/played most of the game in. And the Bengals tried to trade him away last year but failed. So it is obvious he isn't exactly pressuring Dalton for the starting QB position. You keep trying to change the subject because you just can't dare admit I was right. Dennison took a great running game and made it worse. Dennison took a bad passing game and made it even worse. Seems very simple and logical to me. Dude failed miserably at his job. He sucks. You just like making excuses. Church of Dennison perhaps? COD! COD! COD! And that is if you compare him to Anthony Lynn and Greg Roman - not exactly two of the most elite offensive minds in the NFL. Dennison = fail And I bet you he even knows it himself. -
If the Bills would have got an average game (from over the last 3 years) out of Tyrod they would have won. He played horrible this game. He has been playing bad for most of the year - getting worse over time it appears. Maybe he gets into the right situation somewhere else and can revive his career. He is done here and in the AFC East anyway.
-
Yeah. You can tell he is biting his tongue and picking his words at times. That is just because he was a reasonably good Qb with a lot of experience in the sport. So the guy sees things from the booth that a less experienced guy isn't seeing on the field under live fire. Also one of the reasons why some coordinators choose to sit in a booth rather than stand on the sidelines. It's easier to see the whole picture.

Yeah I don't doubt Castillo is also largely to blame - maybe even more so than Dennison for the outside zone not working this year. The Bills did run outside zone plays 30 times last year (less than twice per game), but did execute it very well. They averaged 5.73 yard per carry while doing it and averaged 2.77 yards before contact. That was fantastic. The average NFL team got 3.84 yards per carry and 1.16 yards before contact. The Bills were dominant running the ball every way they tried to in 2016. But they only ran that outside zone 30 times in the season where the NFL average was 91 times. Atlanta, who ran it very well, ran it 200 times in comparison. I don't know how many times the Bills ran the outside zone this year. I think it was a lot, lot more often in the first few games and a lot, lot less often more recently. But they weren't executing it very well at any point this season if I recall correctly. And they mostly gave up on it in the last few games to their credit. Although Dennison did call it in the playoff game at least once that I remember and it went for negative 3 yards with Shady getting mauled in the backfield. (similar to what happened so often this year early on when they ran it) I think an awful lot of last year's running game success can/should be attributed to the unpredictability of the running game and the fact that we had a very good 2nd back that could sometimes outperform the starting back. Last year you weren't sure which gap the back was going to attack or even if it was going to be a back at all. Sometimes the QB ran it. You weren't even sure whether they were going to run to the strong side or weak side or counter. This year it seems like you can guess, with too much accuracy, where the point of attack is going to be. If we can do that watching from the stands or from our couches, then I am sure the other teams' defenses are doing it with a much higher degree of accuracy. And with teams stacking the box and run blitzing, it makes sense why they are getting into the backfield to tackle Shady for a loss on those long developing outside zone plays. As far as Dennison goes, the run game and pass game have gotten worse since he took over. And we didn't think the pass game could get worse than it was. Since he has been here, the Bills rarely make big plays either running or passing. Yet they did last year and the year before. I blame him for a large percentage of that. Unacceptable performance. I don't think he is likely or even capable of building a dominant offense period. Not good enough. Just my opinion.

2018 Veteran QBs - the Mega Poll
PolishDave replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even after I just pointed out that you didn't comprehend what was written, you read it again and still don't comprehend. Try a 3rd time maybe? I specifically blamed Dennison for calling a stretch zone running play in the game that went for -3 yards where Shady got tackled in the backfield. And said that is an example of why he is incompetent. Because that result has been happening so often this year with that exact same play. Then you quote me and start talking about Tyrod. I wasn't talking about him or any play he made. I specifically isolated Dennison where Tyrod was not involved. Tyrod had zero to do with the zone running play I mentioned as the example why Dennison sucks. You can't friggin read. Go back to middle school until you can pass 8th grade. -
