I was unclear. I was not referring to a feeling; I was referring to the fact that geographically everything is upstate to NYC and Long Island. People want a way to distinguish the rest of the state from NYC and Long Island. The term "Upstate New York" allows one to do that.

"Upstate New York" is the only phrase that can encompass all of the state north of the Bronx. People use it all over the state even in WNY. "Upstate" works because everything North of the Bronx is "Upstate" to New York City and Long Island. Why are people upset about this?

Since moving to Rochester a couple of years ago, I have noticed that people seem to love running red lights here. You have to treat newly green lights like all way stops unless you want to get nailed by someone who must have a life or death emergency that requires him not to be a minute more late.
