going to be an interesting off-season.  I think there will be significant turnover with the roster …..I’ve heard of one likely departure, which I found surprising

What an enigma. I would love to know the full story on him.

On one occasion I happened to be in the stands directly behind home plate field level at Shea Stadium when Armando Benitez was pitching. Having seen this post I googled him. He is listed at 6'4"/180. When I saw him it looked like he weighed 230 or even more.

Benitez was throwing the ball just so hard that I found it hard to believe that anybody even had a chance to even foul one off.  The ball hitting the catchers mitt sounded like an explosion.

From what I gather he was a bit of a nut. I would not be at all shocked if he was on steroids but again, he looked unhitable and that night he was backing guys off the plate and striking them out seemingly at will.

His career went south and he wound up playing with the Long Island Ducks from what I read. Those guys make very little money so I suppose that he wasn't much of a saver lol.

180?!  I would have guessed 250ish too!  He seemed like a beast.

We lost to KC in 2021 and 2022 because the Chiefs had a super team with Mahomes, Kelce and Hill. 13 seconds was inexcusable. We had played our very best game and had them beat.

In 2023 and 2024 we had injuries to several defensive players in the playoffs when it mattered. Our defense could not stop anyone, not even the Dolphins 3rd string quarterback. I already forgot his name!

We are never going to be the Patriots or the Chiefs and be a dynasty but if we just stay patient and get a little luck by not getting all the injuries again, I’ll take our chances over anyone.

Beane needs to work his magic, restructure, move some pieces around and get a #2 receiver and we will be fine.

A little I’m hurt but not yet slain. I’ll just lie down and bleed a while, then I’ll rise and fight again.

    good post!

people forget that during the patriots dynasty, teams like the broncos, colts, and Steelers would sneak by the pats here and there.

A lot of times is wasn’t because those teams were better; often, some other team upset the pats, and paved the way for those teams to get to the SB.

would be nice if we had some luck like that, and someone else taking care of the chiefs for us.

As a Mets fan I'll give you Turk. But Benítez was a rollercoaster I did not enjoy. Mahomes had a 5 era if I recall correctly. I wasn't a fan of that either.

I am thinking of Benitez when he was that new raw guy who would come in in the 8th inning to set up John Franco.

he was such an exciting player then. But I agree that when he shifted to being a closer, it was too up and down.

also, how about some love for Dennis Cook?! Cookie was the ying to Wendell’s Yang. Loved those two guys!

  5. As an aside, I used to be a die hard Mets fan, and was always a fan of Mahomes Sr.

I think I was always drawn to these middle relievers for some reason— loved guys like Turk Wendell, Dennis

Cook, and Armando Benitez from those late 90s Mets teams too!

Our base D seemingly forever now has been a 4 - 2 - 5.  If Dorian Williams makes the same jump between first and second year as Bernard (yeah, I know, BIG if), why not play some 4 - 3 - 4 to get Milano, Bernard and Williams on the field at the same time, simply as a change of pace?

Better yet, if we move to 4 - 3 as our base D, it can solve some immediate problems on D without signing a bunch of FA’s or depending on rookies to start.  Is there any reason Taron Johnson can’t be full time starting FS?  Good tackler, ball hawk, veteran.  Keep Poyer another year as SS. CB’s are Douglas and Benford.  Elam can come in as nickel, maybe even play some press against slot or TE to take advantage of his supposed strengths.  Milano, Bernard and Williams at LB with Spector giving some vet depth.  Up front, Rousseau, Oliver, DQ (only FA signing) and Miller.

Of course, still need to go heavy on D in draft (after going WR in #1).  Find next year’s replacements for Poyer, Jones and Miller early and draft some CB’s late.  Ideally, you’d like to find a starting DE to allow Miller to play third-down pass rushing specialist (maybe find a way to squeeze money for AJE).

is it ideal?  No. But I think it’s realistic given the cap constraints.

it is an interesting idea to Shift Taron to safety and play with Williams, Bernard, and Milano on the field more— or at least use that package more often.

i do think though they are going to need to sign or draft more safeties regardless, and I really think we need a better backup to Taron as the nickel. When he is out, the entire defense Can’t function.

I think the leverage is finally just shifting towards college players.  Probably inevitable and maybe overdue.

But aren’t these players potentially taking spots away from other college players who could really use the exposure?

if these college players don’t want to play in the game, then don’t accept the invitation, IMO.

I didn’t buy into the malcontent narrative before this year.  Now, I’m more open to the idea.  At the very least I sense he’s a headache.  I know some people who have dealt with him and—take this for what it’s worth—I can see how he would be an extremely difficult and grating co-worker.

I am in the same boat as you, and have been coming around to this point of view now.

Keep an eye on the Patriots. There's rumors of trading for Justin Fields and trading down for more picks. There's also the possibility of Eliot Wolf taking over as GM there.

knowing the patriots, they will sign someone like Ryan Tannehill And trade down from their first round pick.

The most embarrassing day in Bills history in my lifetime (just turned 40) was the first game played in Toronto. Not only did our crappy, heartless team get rolled by Miami, you could hear audible "Let's Go Dolphins" chants from the crowd.

They took a home game away from Buffalo and put it in a different country, ironically giving the Dolphins a friendlier environment than they get when the Bills play them in Miami. It was such a disgrace.

What was pitiful too about those games was how there would be “fans” in the stadium wearing random jersey shirts from teams that weren’t even playing in the game!

The embarrassing part was that the Bills fumbled eight times and lost five and threw four interceptions, two each by Kelly and Reich.  Nine turnovers in the biggest game of the year!!!!

9 turnovers is insane; how is that even possible?

I haven’t seen that game since it aired (for obvious reasons), but now am curious to go back and watch it.

(I do remember one of the SB’s against Dallas, we were up at halftime!).
