This is NOT the first time it's been tried. It's the first time it hasn't been summarily dismissed. No matter how anyone looks at it, today or 100 years from now, this presidency has been a disaster for all but Exxon-Mobil, Halliburton/KBR, BP, etc etc (and their large shareholders and executives). America at large though comes out a big loser in many ways, and it will take some time to recover.

"Some say" is another one of my favorites. Translation is "I'm making it up" but it's amazing how many people believe whatever it that follows. Some say that indicates extreme stupidity on behalf of the American people.

He also got caught laughing about it on open mic ... pissed off enough people on both sides of the aisle to where they'd probably override a veto anyway.

Maybe he was just getting a $400 Haircut...

Where does it say that? He looks good is all. And don't worry about the cancer, it's not contagious. -

National Enquirer? Is that rag still in business? I tellya what, I saw John Edwards at CTIA earlier this year and whatever he pays, it's worth it. He is one helluva handsome man. Wow. -

You just gotta love the decent, caring Left...

I think it's hysterical. In fact cash-strapped local govt's ought to consider auctioning off naming rights (with rules regarding obscenity etc of course)...I bet there would be some really funny ones. You'd see Teddy Kennedy's name in funny places...ditto "Wide Stance" Craig (aside from the Bobble legs at Twinkie games"... I bet if I had nothing better to do, I could go to the thread regarding the New Yorker cover and see the same wingnuts who on THIS thread are gnashing their teeth, laughing at the people who took umbrage at the New Yorker cover. Ah wingnuts. Gotta love 'em. They have all those easy-to-push buttons .... -
The timing is good, the media and everyone else has been whining about the state of our aging grid, refineries, etc for years now. It's a lot easier to start a transition by "cutting in" new technology bit by bit instead of one fell swoop. It's less expensive, and will allow time to learn and improve the technology and process. It's just the first step that we seem to find so hard. When you're an addict, you need to hit bottom in order to realize you need to make a change. I am not sure we've hit it yet, but we're close. Eight or nine dollars a gallon of gas ought to just about do it - yeah I know we're not talking about gasoline here, but we ARE talking about a real paradigm shift and given the impact this has on America, it's probably going to be the catalyst.

President Bush Lifts Executive Ban on Offshore Drilling

T Boone Pickens is going after the air market. He has apparently purchased all rights to air, and we will soon have to pay him to even breath it. After all, the air we are breathing could better be used to power the T Boone Pickens windmill farms he's in the process of building. -

So what you mean is - progressives are informed, and by definition therefore conservatives are ill-informed. I'm glad you agree. -

I think I sorta stated that previously ... but in any event I agree with you. A subset of people who read this magazine raised a stink....the great unwashed masses who would not ordinarily even be aware of its existence are now aware of the cover, but not much else. Hence the "informed" have done a great job ill-informing the already ill-informed. And a great big DUH to them for that. -

The problem is that some people cannot tell the difference. By the way, I think it's sorta funny. -

I think the people who are upset really believe that Americans are so stupid that they'll see the magazine cover and believe it's true. Kinda like the people who watch Fox News and see "Osama" where it should read "Obama" and believe Obama's a muslim terrorist. The error in this line of thinking is that most of the morons guilty of the latter behaviour don't read this magazine. -

Awright, another windfall for his oil-drilling buddies! Sure, in about 10 years it will all kick in and the price of gas will drop, right? Sure. Uh huh. The funny thing is most people realize this isn't going to help. -
And do you bury it in the desert too?

Correct when he said Americans are whiners, or correct when he corrected himself and said that he didn't mean Americans are whiners but their leaders are whiners...? -

Oh it's front and center on CNN, including Jesse, Jr. annihilating dear old dad. You'd think these people would know better (by "these people" I mean folks in the public eye...not like it's the first time Jesse Sr. was mic'd up).

The Problem with the Republicans...

Ah yes, but if you knew anything about Texas government you'd know that the governor's role is mostly ceremonial, except of course he gets the change to commute prison sentences and stay executions. Other than that it is the Lieutenant Governor who has the power and actually manages the business of the state. As to Bush's business skills - well, having seen how he runs the country would you be very surprised to know that his various enterprises have all been busts, requiring money from his daddy's oil buddies to bail him out? The big joke in Texas was his company "Arbusto", which was referred to in the industry the whole time as "El Busto". George W. Bush is a coked-up frat boy who has failed MISERABLY at everything he's tried. Except maybe partying. The one good thing about him is Laura. GWB would have probably been very happy to have lived off his trust funds out of the public eye if he hadn't been the eldest son and pushed to follow in his daddy's footsteps. -
I don't have the bandwidth to research all the states but I found this via a really quick search: A study released on March 6, 2008 found that Maryland taxpayers have paid at least $37.2 million for each of the state’s five executions since 1978, when the state reenacted the death penalty. The study, prepared by the Urban Institute, estimates that the average cost to Maryland taxpayers for reaching a single death sentence is $3 million - $1.9 million more than the cost of a non-death penalty case. The study examined 162 capital cases that were prosecuted between 1978 and 1999 and found that seeking the death penalty in those cases cost $186 million more than what those cases would have cost had the death penalty not been sought. At every phase of a case, according to the study, capital murder cases cost more than non-capital murder cases. What the study found: The death penalty has cost Maryland at least $186 million. This is state spending over and above what Maryland would have spent had there been no death penalty. The cost of a single death sentence in Maryland is approximately three times higher – or $1.9 million more – than the costs of a comparable non-death penalty case, even taking into account the costs of long-term incarceration. The cost for prosecutors to seek but not get a death sentence is $670,000 more ($1.8 million total) for a single case than for a comparable non-death case – for the same outcome of a life or long-term prison sentence. When the death penalty is imposed, the court costs alone jump to almost seven times higher ($1.7 million compared to $250,000). (“Death penalty costs Md. more than life term,” by Jennifer McMenamin, The Baltimore Sun, March 6, 2008).
