Why didn't you answer the question?  Where did you learn to break down film in the trenches?

I didn't say experts.  You don't need to be an expert to understand at the basic X's and O's level.  If you played offensive line at HS level, you understand how to break down film as an offensive lineman.  Some people do it as a hobby because they study it.  This isn't some sort of rare ability.  I played WR so I've never had to break down film inside the trenches.

So since I don't know, I don't pretend I know.  So I rely on guys I trust know what they're looking at.  Videos are posted in this thread and posters who understand the game are commenting on it.

That's where you and I differ.  You hold onto a thought and that's it.  You don't learn anything being so stubborn.

    So yes

This ^ plus folks like Erik (for example) from Cover 1... HE IS an expert, in spite of being a "You tuber" (he's on other platforms too). He played ball and was a an actual coach at one point too. Multiple Bills players have also validated his film reviews in person.

Yeah, I watched that after the user posted it. Erik says it's just his opinion and what he's saying is logical from the standpoint of just trying to put bodies in gaps, but when you look at the defense wholistically it doesn't really make a ton of sense. We're showing a true 4-3 over front pre-snap to their 13 personnel set. Rapp and Epenesa are clearly working an exchange to the field (Epenesa pinching to B gap while Rapp works C). Everyone else is playing their gap integrity vs the Duo Run Concept they get. Backers see it quick and react quick - really good reads by both of them. We're disguising our Hole coverage as Quarters pre-snap (which is why I don't think a timeout was called - we wouldn't know until the safeties start rolling the wrong way that we're not gapped out and by that point it's too late). Micah is rolling into the box but to a covered gap. Structurally we wouldn't ever put our Mike outside the box and keep our Will inside the box, plus we would never ask a Safety to be an A gap fitter, so the backer shift doesn't make sense.

No, Cover 1 gave their opinion.

Ok, it sounds like the all-22 full view perspective offers that more readily than what his zoom-in shows. And your 4-3 Over familiarity is appreciated. I still would like to think a full group-shift left call (just the distance it takes to get Bernard directly behind Groot, and Milano centered to the O-line) would have benefited angles and leverage like Erik was seemingly alluding to, but idk for sure.

Well that was drag. But it's a long season and we've got to keep our spirits high. So here are tonight's top 10 silver linings!

    1. We only have to play the Jets defense once more this year!
    2. We might finally suck enough to draft a #2 WR like Tee Higgins!
    3. We can free up a roster space by cutting Sam Martin since Josh Allen has assumed the role of punter!
    4. We looked this bad in the 2021 opener and look how we ended that season!
    5. We probably won't have to hear about the Jets being Super Bowl bound anymore!
    6. Josh Allen quickly ended his MVP bid so he can lighten up and play more loose and free!
    7. Turns out Leslie Frazier wasn't the issue with the run D!
    8. Josh Allen didn't puke before the game!
    9. Statistics say Josh Allen has to win an overtime game at some point. Best to save it for a time when it really matters!
    10. There's no way this game wasn't scripted!

    wait! is #8 confirmed??? 😮

My guess is that this one falls on Bernard, who possibly didn't recognize the overload and didn't get them to slide up front.

And who also buried himself inside where Rousseau was being buried by a double and left Tre White isolated outside with contain responsibility.

pretty darn close... it's revealed in Erik Turner's film review of Bernard. Bernard needed to have the whole 2nd level group (LB's plus Trey White) shift one gap over to their left to properly align to the 3TE formation used by the Jets off-balance right.

    2. Bernard - completely disagree. He was absolutely awful

Nope, he wasn't... not perfect by any means but certainly nothing remotely close to awful.

People with opinions on gameplay...  if you're unfamiliar with what "played well / played poorly" really looks like, there's plenty of content like this out there to guide you. Save yourself a bad take. Film results are as indisputable as it gets in football.

  6. Scheme looked very well suited to the NYJ opponent. I simply don't agree with literally any of your Dorsey concerns. Film (as pointed out also by Greg Tompsett) shows that the available options were there for Josh. The 2nd and 15 run was explained by both Josh and coach McD last night post game, and makes 100% sense from a coaching perspective. Cook is exactly the type of back to be starting in this scheme as well. With that shotgun spread, you're gonna get TFL's, it comes with the territory. I love the 12 personnel options in our newly adjusted scheme and the plethora of short releases and options it provides in dictating to the defense.

The NYJ defense is apparently much better than you credit them for. They and SF are the best 2 I've seen in '23.

Josh was the issue last night. Period. This one is real simple, where some other times its a bit more complex, and multi-faceted.

  7. Josh advised the reasoning for the run call in is post game interview. McDermott talked about it too in his. The Jets (potentially best D in the game) were in a 2 high shell and the run call was to get the team into 3rd and manageable and "steal some yards" with a run call. (you don't want to be totally behind the sticks on 3rd down vs a team like that. Its sound logic, from a football coaching perspective, despite what many of you think, especially against a great D. Just didn't make a guy miss on the carry.

Don't look to hard tonight for other "reasons" for the loss beyond Josh making 3 really bad decisions.

  8. Wow we've got some real 'interesting' fans. Cook is a super talented runner and receiving back for our scheme. LMAO at so many of you. He's not going to break many tackles, that was already known. Seriously, focus on the reality that Josh had an awful game. Cook played well against a monster run D. He gets the edge well, he runs inside well too. Dudes, we were running him on read option out of a shotgun spread formation on most downs. Made his catches too. this thread is nonsense. Loss was almost entirely on Josh and a little on the special teams. I can't fathom why anyone would even think to see Cook as a problem.

Every team going forward should be calling out Jawaan Taylor when he tries the same BS in future games. Glad to see he's being paid $80 million over 4 years for that kind of scared-as$ play.

No doubt. He was embarrassingly awful and somehow got away with something like 20 false starts?

  10. The quote is likely more relevant to Frazier's defense when he was the HC in Minnesota. The Bills didn't run a ton of true Tampa 2. They ran more cover 3, cover 2 man (which varies from Tampa 2), quarters coverage, etc. But of course dolts are going to open fire at any opportunity.

With that said, I am excited for the prospect of some more risk taking in McDermott's D, than when under Frazier.

I'd be curious about the "film" comment, if Josh ever made it.  I saw it mentioned here & elsewhere - but have a hard time believing I would have missed that if he said it.  The media would have run w/ that for a bit, imo.

JA's improvement over the course of his young NFL career has been astounding to me - he's such a different QB today than he was his 1st couple of years.  That's work. That's not just him slumming it & relying on his skills, which he has always had.

I  think Whitlock was trying to get some attention - and it worked.  But I don't think his commentary has much to do w/ reality.  Especially the comment that JA doesn't have that "dawg" in him. Cripes.

your curiosity is well founded, @Success, and @Zerovoltz, your assumption about his film watching comment is wrong (and thats fine, but FYI). For the dumb dumbs (such as KDiggz) that have heard the comment and still think there's an issue, none of us can help you fools. But the context of the comment was about watching film, specifically of a team like the Jets. What he was saying essentially was that he doesn't want to get TOO caught up in relying on film tendencies of a team (ie. when we come out in a wide spread with these guys on the field and run this play, the Jets are always going to react a certain way...). So he likes to blend knowing what they do as a reaction on film with what he see's ON the field with his eyes. Because teams will bait you with that sh*t. Why this seems to be so difficult for some people to grasp is beyond me.

Shaw, I respect your knowledge of the LB position and am not trying to be argumentative.  But is it really correct that Kirksey has been an effective pass defender?   I don't know the player very well but I thought I read somewhere that his PFF pass defense grade last season was in the low 50s which ranked him something like 89th among LBs as I recall.

Beane and McD are clearly in the modern age when it comes to LBs being more pass defenders than run defenders these days.  Yet they sign a guy who's not a good pass defender - and arguably not a good defender of any kind.  Though his experience and intelligence would probably make him a better leader from that position than any of the younger guys.  I wonder what Beane and McD are seeing and thinking other than the very obvious - the MLBs on the 53-man roster aren't very good.

  13. Between the ears my a$$. Josh rated up there with Drew Bees and Joe Burrow on intelligence testing coming into the league.

As much as we all think we know answers that people who spend 80-100 hours per week dissecting this sport for a living don’t, it ain’t the case.

Even being the best team in the league, sometimes by a lot, is no guarantee of even making it to a Super Bowl. It has happened many times to many teams.

And yes, Marino was still the best QB I’ve ever seen. 0 Super Bowl wins.
