  1.  The thing I've noticed that gets left out of these flash reports is context. Very few of the reports are providing that. For example, one practice day, most of the action was in the red zone (ie. tight space and timing). On another day, the team worked almost exclusively on 1st/2nd down (ie. advantage offense), today it was mostly 3rd and long situations (ie. advantage defense). Context matters.

I’m pretty sure if Elam develops and becomes a starter, you won’t hear me complain about it. The fact is that he’s getting scraps for some reason and it doesn’t make sense. It’s fair to be critical sometimes when things like this pop up. We need to be hitting on our top picks and haven’t been doing a great job of it lately. However, it looks like we might have something in Kincaid and hopefully Torrence is the real deal. Looks like cook might be something too. We will see with Elam.

Make that type of conclusion at the end of camp if he is still the #3 or #4 cb then AND if Jackson/Benford aren't playing great. I think that's what people are getting at. Judge not on day 2 of camp with no pads.

Seriously?  You make this judgement on the first day of camp because Dodson got the first opportunity? ( likely because of his more veteran status). If you saw Dodson try to play that role last year when Edmunds was out, then there is no way should conclude this.  He could not cut it.  No matter who starts at this spot there will likely be a drop off, for at least a good while.  It will be interesting to see how McD adjusts his D to account for this.

think of the post as bait...

Cam won an MVP and took a team to the Super Bowl.  There’s nothing insulting to Josh about comparing the two.  Josh will have a better career, but he’s yet to reach the peak that Cam did.

All of Cam's accomplishments are pretty well known common knowledge for a football fan. As a passer there is simply no comparison, and that is ultimately how a QB is measured. They aren't in the same zip code as passers. My points are not related to any sort of unfamiliarity with Newton's success.

Allen is an improved Cam Newton. All of Cam’s running abilities with much more elite passing skills. Why would it be an insult to compare Allen to a one time league MVP and Superbowl participant?

Because they are miles apart as passers, that’s all. Cam in his best days was a mediocre spinner of the pigskin

Maybe a better comparison would be with Elway. Both have/had a cannon for an arm. Early in his career Elway would run and scramble. Not to level that Allen does as it was a different game back then. As Elway got older, he was just a pure pocket passer. Of course, having Davis carry the workload running changed everything for Elway and the Broncos. Josh doesn't have an RB as good as TD was.

    Definitely more like an Elway

  6. Can we please please stop comparing Allen to Cam Newton, ever? Its kind of an insult at this point.

As pure passers, there is simply no comparison. Cam never even remotely came close to the level of Josh in this area. Possibly close from a strength perspective but not the accuracy and layered touch that Josh has developed.

Even as runners, while Josh can be "reckless" with the ball in his hands while running, he doesn't take nearly the car-wreck shots that Cam did in the open field. Sure, Josh may not slide or run OB enough for our liking, but he seems to set up his contact with more awareness.

And lastly of course, and as some have already stated, Josh's significant (time missed/affected for following games) injuries in the NFL to date have occurred while he was prone in the pocket.

The comparison table for WRs separating against Man and Zone has Isaiah McKenzie top 5 in separation against man coverage.

That's because its true. It's literally what they told us he was used for against the more predominantly Man cover teams like the Pats were. Crossers vs. Man constantly. So while Lil dirty was a limited player, separating vs man was his thing that keeps him on NFL rosters.

You've missed the point.  He is what he is.   Davis could never-ever catch 77% of his passes running short routes......it would only LESSEN his impact because he will be OPEN less and he struggles in all contested catch situations.   The second best option has to be much better than Gabe has proven that he can be.    It's so clear........that it really isn't even about Davis.   He is a bad-handed HR specialist being asked to do more than he can.    You aren't saying anything talking about his depth of target.   His targets need to be deep because those are the routes he can get open on.    Gabe's 15 YDOT(depth of target) is a lot different than when Diggs had a 15 YDOT in 2019........because Diggs could actually execute the other routes.   Gabe can't.

And don't even start in about RB's.   You can scratch your head all you want.........that has nothing to do with their failure to beat the best teams in the playoffs.  Individual RB's don't move the needle in the playoffs and teams that rely heavily on them struggle to get similar results against defense's playing with playoff level intensity.    See the Saints getting upset in the playoffs over and over in good part due to their offensive reliance on Alvin Kamara.

I'd agree here overall, but I do see Swat's point about depth of target in the Bills scheme as a part of the statistical struggle had by Gabe, and I do also believe that Gabe is still fully able to affect his own outcome in overcoming the drops, and CAN become a solid #2. Just not there as of yet, and not a sure thing.

Yep,  I love Gabe Davis as a clear 3rd option.   Like a 60 targets guy.   He's like having a power hitter batting 4th.   The idea is to load the bases with the top options and then, when there is nowhere to put him,  the pitcher has to throw him strikes which raises his batting average 100+ points.    That's Gabe........he needs the attention of the defense focused elsewhere so he can get favorable matchups..........and he has the deep ball skills to take advantage of those situations.

I think people get confused about his playoff performances and think that indicates that there is something else there that he just isn't showing in the regular season.   I don't think that's the case.   He is what he is.........inconsistent but a HR threat.

    Well put.

    Career averages:

Gabe.............42 yards per game and 54% catch rate

JuJu..............60 yards per game and 70% catch rate

Vague criticisms of his play aren't a substitute for the fact that there is a big difference in quality of target between the two.

Is Juju as good as Tee Higgins or Jaylen Waddle or DeVonta Smith?   No, but he's closer to them than Gabe is to him.   And in a full season his career averages are going to put him in the top 25 yardage producers(24th last year fwiw) more often than not......while also catching most of his targets.    Top 25 and doing it efficiently is,  in fact, good.

If Kincaid puts up a Juju-like 900+ yards and a high catch rate as a rookie as option 2 to another strong Diggs season then the Bills will have closed the gap between them and other top contenders and rivals in this regard.

I wasn't really saying anything about Gabe. Just that Juju ain't it. I don't think Kincaid will quite get there to #2 status in year 1. I think Gabe is a fantastic #3. Gotta make it work by hitting the open man in this offense instead of opting deep all the time when there are underneath options. Knox will help too,

    22 minutes ago, SWATeam said:

All this catch rate talk is absurd and lacking context.  Obviously a guy that works the slot with a much lower ADOT is going to have a higher catch rate than someone that works deep.

That is also a good point... how they are utilized makes a difference.

When was Juju not a good reciever ? I don’t get it

He's always been very inconsistent at getting open and in the end is average as WR's go. Steeler fans were never sold on him as a whole either. Certainly more frustration than joy with him. Limited speed, explosiveness and dedication to the game at times. Pretty dang good hands though! Pretty much defines average. a middle of the pack #2.

If we're looking to set expectations of the Bills #2 (Whom I think will be Kincaid before too terribly long) I would hope we can find a better example. That's all.

That is one you want to hide for sure.

He had glowing reports about all our top picks this year,  At least he had some negatives on his Cameron Denzler video..

Erik Turner speaks to the film he is showing, and he's an expert at it (it becomes obvious if you watch a fair amount of his content). There's really no opportunity to be biased about that as its based on real plays on tape and you can see it for yourself in plain sight. Maybe you guys are misquoting his take on Saffold, or thinking of some of the other cover1 presenters. I found this video with a quick search that Erik did. Here he is speaking highly about Saffold in the run game only (along with 3 former NFL O-linemen agreeing at the time about his effectiveness in the running game at the time). As it turned out, clearly Saffold lost any and all of his foot speed he may have had left and was atrocious in the passing game all year, but I never heard Erik say he was any good in the passing game. Erik shows plenty of negative plays guys make on tape throughout the season as well as the good ones, but of course as an outlet that relies on likes and subs they are going to cover aspects that the people want to see.

So this dude you are quoting is saying $15.75m a year???

Sorry yes 15.5 is what I meant to type earlier. I’m up way too late🙂

but yes, 16th highest DT salary which is about where his film commentary seems to have him. Most I’ve seen rate him as an above average DT, and TFL’s for him reflect that too

Just in case you want to see it anyway. He’s likely right…. Shefter is more of a news breaker from the agent than a guy who breaks down how the money gets spread
