DISPATCHES FROM THE INTERSECTION OF RADICAL CHIC AND THE EDUCATION APOCALYPSE: The Chicago Teachers Union Is Exactly Who You Thought They Were. If you spend any time on social media, you have likely heard about the latest outrage from my city’s Cthulhu-like public sector behemoth, the Chicago Teachers Union: On Friday afternoon, to note the death of radical left-wing Sixties terrorist Assata Shakur (born Joanne Chesimard) in Cuba, the CTU’s X account issued the following statement: Rest in Power, Rest in Peace, Assata Shakur. Today we honor the life and legacy of a revolutionary fighter, a fierce writer, a revered elder of Black liberation, and a leader of freedom whose spirit continues to live in our struggle. Assata refused to be silenced. She taught us that “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” Keep in mind, as Noah Rothman eloquently explained yesterday afternoon, that Shakur was a cop-killer who escaped from prison to live the rest of her days in a totalitarian country. My readers tend to be a fairly savvy bunch, so I suspect many of you are asking yourselves why a teachers’ union would have felt the need to celebrate the passing of an infamous American terrorist murderer. (For those wondering — because it occurred to me to check — Shakur was never a teacher herself, unless her job was to instruct people in criminal undertakings.) But while this question may puzzle out-of-towners, it makes all the sense in the world to us locals. The Chicago Teachers Union is (as I have explained many times in these pages) arguably the single most radical major union in America, a throbbing, graft-bloated parasite attached to Chicago city government the way a tick burrows deep into a pig. And much like a tick, the CTU isn’t content merely to suck money out of the city’s taxpayers. It gives back as well — in the form of Mayor Brandon Johnson, former CTU lobbyist and current laughingstock of America. https://www.nationalreview.com/carnival-of-fools/the-chicago-teachers-union-is-exactly-who-you-thought-they-were/

Best bad headline from the Hegsethathon. The award goes to The New Republic: "Hegseth Summoned Military Leaders to Say 'FAFO' in Disturbing Speech." I think it's ludicrous for a journalistic article to call it a "disturbing speech." Who is disturbed? The headline writer? Were the military leaders disturbed? All of them? Some of them? Don't create fake objectivity. Someone needs to have been disturbed. I want to know who and why. From the article: “To our enemies: FAFO,” Hegseth said, using an acronym that translates to “***** around and find out.” Hegseth ordered hundreds of U.S. military officials around the globe to meet him at a spontaneous assembly in Virginia.... The message shocked members of the U.S. military, who could not recall another instance in which a defense secretary summoned so many commanders for a sudden in-person meeting—especially without a clear rationale. Was it a "disturbing speech" because of what Hegseth said or was a "disturbing speech" because it was disturbing to have to travel and sit in the audience to hear? With a government shutdown looming, Democrats are clanging like cymbals, accusing Republicans of not wanting to fund "healthcare." Of course, the truth of the matter is far different from their pronouncements. What's being "cut" are COVID-era emergency appropriations that Democrats set to expire in the Inflation Reduction Act. Then there's the issue of funding for healthcare for illegal aliens, which is part of the $1.5 trillion "hostage" deal exposed by Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). But while Democrats are no doubt responsible for marching America toward another shutdown, given they'd be the ones blocking a clean funding bill, they would also be marching themselves into a trap. If the clock strikes midnight and there's no continuing resolution, the Trump administration will be able to go nuclear on the bureaucracies, which remain the primary power center for the left. In fact, a memo has already been set out by OMB telling various government agencies to prepare for mass firings. That leaves Democrats with very little leverage in negotiations as the deadline looms. If they choose to plow forward with shutting the government down to virtue signal for illegal immigration, they will end up taking a hatchet to the embedded bureaucracy, their primary source of policy influence. So are they bluffing? I'm starting to think so. No doubt Schumer and company are more than willing to screw over Americans, but are they willing to screw over themselves? Color me skeptical they'll give Trump that big of a win just to garner a few more backslaps from MSNBC. I think there's a good chance Democrats back down in the eleventh hour. https://redstate.com/bonchie/2025/09/30/democrats-are-walking-into-a-trap-n2194556 -
Pete Hegseth Sets Directives and the New Direction for the Department of War By Jennifer Oliver O'Connell On Tuesday morning, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth addressed a gathering of hundreds of U.S. military commanders, officials, and personnel from around the world at the Marine Corps base at Quantico. Last week, Hegseth called them up for their attendance at this address, which also included remarks by President Donald Trump. In his speech, Hegseth set the compass for the new Department of War, outlined a return to True North, and defined what was necessary and mission-focused, as well as what was fluff and would be eliminated. Hegseth greeted the Chairman, the Joint Chiefs, Generals, Admirals, Commanders, Officers, Senior Enlisted, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and all members of the American military with a welcome and a declaration.
