Sean McDermott’s Current Approval Rating
Wayne Cubed replied to BillyWhiteShows's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Um sure you do, are you saying the Bills didn’t covet Tre? And Glenn missed 3 his rookie season and 5 because of the Kidney in 2016. He started all 16 games for 3 straight season. His first injury plagued season was 2017. Prior to that he was in no way shape or form, oft injured. If Kyle can miss 10 games in a season and not be labelled oft injured, Glenn should get that same benefit considering he played every game 3 seasons in a row. Ok, that’s all you got? So they could have kept Glenn and he would have been better than Mills. Tell me, how would the line have faired in it was Glenn with Dawkins next to him? I’m not really sure you can argue that considering how bad the Bills OL was. And Dawkins regressed a bit. -

Except I’m not playing fantasy GM, I’m asking if the team would be any better or worse off if that was the plan. This isn’t about misjudging talent, a la Wilson or Brady and missing out. This is about a philiopshical difference in how a team is built. McDermott thought it more important to draft the cornerstone of his secondary and build the defense first. That can not even be argued based on the moves he’s made. I can guarantee you their were coaches or GMs available who would have had the Bills stay put and draft either Mahomes or Watson with the state of the Bills QB room. Hell the Chiefs with a QB in place, Alex Smith, are the team that moved up to get Mahomes! I’m sorry but you can hold it against him. And he will forever be judged by that decision if things don’t work out. Nix was certainly judged by his inability to find a QB and build the team first and pass on a QB like Wilson. And I’m sorry but you are playing the hindsight game that “most didn’t care.” Actually some fans did care and wanted those moves to be made. Glenn wasn’t oft injured. He missed 8 games prior to the 2017 season. In that same stretch another Bill missed 11 games, would you say he was oft injured? That player was Kyle Williams. -

Yup. Saw it in the thread for the Colts/Texans game, that Watson was 'meh'. I mean he took a very bad Texans OL, if you think the Bills was bad, and basically Hopkins and after an 0-3 start won 9 games straight. They went 11-2 after the 0-3 start. Watson passed for over 4,000 yards and 26 TDs. He also ran for over 500 yards and 5 TDs. THE FIRST TO DO THAT EVER! But yea, I guess he's 'meh'. Josh Allen today, right now, isn't even close to Watsons level and he may well never be. -
Chargers vs Ravens: Who will beat the Patriots?
Wayne Cubed replied to BuffaloButt's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Chargers have both the offensive and defensive talent to beat the Pats**, I don't like the odds of a rookie QB going up against Belichick. Unfortunately he eats them for breakfast and eventually the Pats** will score against the Ravens defense, I think the Browns showed that you can. -

I can't vote because my choice isn't there, it would probably work better as percentages. At the moment I'm a bit indifferent to the job he's done. He's made some good decision and guys seem to buy into what he's doing, thus far. Saying that, he's made some really poor decisions and his in game management leaves a little to be desired. This next offseason and season is where we learn if it really is working. They need to improve next season. Players need to show progress. On a side note, for all those who say McBeane had to tear it down would the team be any worse off if instead of tearing the team down McBeane had a plan like this: Sign Gilmore. Draft Mahomes(he still sits for a year). Every other draft pick goes the same. Pick up Sammys 5th year option(look I get he's under preformed but he would be no worse of an option than Benjamin was and he would be the speed they were looking for at the end of this season). Keep Cordy Glenn and move Dawkins to LG. They can still do every other move they did after that, if they wanted to. Then the 2018 draft they could have stayed put and picked up someone like Ridley and probably still drafted Edmunds and everyone else they wanted too. Maybe they pick up a OL earlier in the draft. I just think a better plan, long term, is to get your QB then build around him not wait for that QB to come to you. I think McDermott misjudged the talent of the roster and thought they were going to be bad but was surprised when they were able to push for the playoffs last season. Anyways, the tear down is done, that's the easy job. Now can they build it up, that's where I'll judge them. -

I kind of want the Colts to win here, they’ll play KC and the winner of Ravens/Chargers plays NE**, which I think both could best NE** at home. -

Offensive Line: Who Stays Who Goes
Wayne Cubed replied to Dkollidas's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hope they don't assume any unproven talent, Teller/Boettger, can be the day 1 starter and therefore don't pursue starters for those positions. The only day 1 starter for next season that I see, is Dawkins. Scary, I know. They need to find competition/starters at LG, C, RG and RT. The Bills in the past have just assumed that unproven talent will just improve that next season and haven't brought in anyone of value. A good example of that is Groy. While he looked down the stretch for Wood, he was largely unproven. They just assumed he would start day 1 and only went after Bodine in FA as a backup. That backfired. And too an extent I'd say Dawkins is another example of that. Dawkins played well filling in for Glenn but the line would have been much, much better as a Glenn, Dawkins, Groy/Bodine, Teller/Miller, Mills. -
Bills fire OL Coach Juan Castillo
Wayne Cubed replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm well aware of what Marcells original contract was, something McBeane had no control over. The amount of dead cap associated with Marcell is nearly the exact amount they guaranteed to Star. That means McBeane were willing to pay that amount to a player. So if they were ok paying that amount surely the contract isn't a bad contract, they just didn't like the player. This is about his contract being bad, which is repeated as to why he isn't here. "Needing to get rid of bad contracts." It was more about getting "their" guys, which you even admit to by saying he's a great teammate. -

Bills fire OL Coach Juan Castillo
Wayne Cubed replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This gets thrown around a lot, which were the "bad" contracts? Dareus? I mean if you think that's a bad contract, what about the one they gave to Star to essentially replace him? That wasn't about getting rid of the contract that was about getting in a "process" player. This wasn't a "bad" contract and certainly isn't any worse for what they replaced it with. Glenn? If they waited another year, which who doesn't think they couldn't use Glenn on that line this year, they could have got out with $0 dead cap. This was about getting the ammunition to move up and grab players in the draft. This wasn't a "bad" contract. Tyrod? The $7mm dead cap isn't massive to me for a place holder QB. I wouldn't exactly call that "bad" but maybe there's an argument. Eric Wood? I mean they didn't really have a choice with that one. Those contracts make up the vast majority of the dead cap money that the Bills were saddled with in 2018. And as you've said they've made some pretty poor decisions in the personnel department too. -
I don't think there is any problem with questioning McDermott as a head coach thus far. He's 15-17 after 2 seasons. He took over a mediocre team and has kept them mediocre thus far. He's succeeded in areas that he should have and was expected to succeed in, namely the defense. They are good enough to keep the team in games and the talent level allows that. The other 2 parts of the team, offense and special teams, leave a lot to be desired. Outside of Josh Allen and maybe Daboll. He seems to stick with guys he's comfortable with, ie Castillo and Crossman, which is worrisome. McDermott and Beane's evaluation of offensive talent also leave a lot to be desired. Saying all that, I think giving them 2019 isn't a horrible idea. I know you point to Bowles/Koetter as examples of coaches that should have been obviously fired but they had both taken over some pretty bad teams. In their first season I think they both exceeded expectations in comparison to where the teams were. Jackson/Joseph were both horrible from the get go, so I think those were better examples of the writing being on the wall. Think those firings came a season too late. There also is the problem of, what's available in the HC talent pool. Where are the next up and comers? Is there a Sean McVay or Matt Nagy or Doug Pederson out there? And there are 8 openings, could the Bills land one of those type of guys?

2018 is in the Books - what are the initial thoughts?
Wayne Cubed replied to dubs's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
For me 2018 was as expected considering how the Bills went into the season talent/depth wise. I expected the defense to be good enough to keep them in a fair few games and give the team a chance to win. The talent on the defensive side of the ball far outweighs what the Bills have on offense so not a surprise. I think the problem with 2018 is/was it all necessary? Yes they shed unwanted contracts, I get that but could the season have been more productive for Allen had they done a better job on the offensive side of the ball? Unfortunately we will never know. I have a little concern over McBeane's ability to identify, evaluate and coach up offensive players. Anyways 2018 season is over, for McBeane the time is now and we see what they can really. -
Potential Cut Candidate: Gerald McCoy?
Wayne Cubed replied to DCOrange's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I’m not quite sure why the hesitation to spend the money, this is exactly the time to do it and add to that it’s going to be difficult to spend and get guys to come here anyways. No, not because it’s Buffalo. The Jets had tons of cap space and still had to give out ridiculous contracts and couldn’t get everyone to go there. Why not spend? They don’t have anyone they need to get under contract that they can’t. And the market for other positions of need aren’t looking great. -
Denver Broncos: HC Vance Joseph fired

Elway should fire himself. 3 years prior to Manning arriving: 20-28 3 years after Manning retiring: 20-28 -
I do agree with this for the most part but here's a counterpoint: He won 6 games and made it to the playoffs with a defense that he's built. The talent gap between the offensive and defensive sides of the ball is massive. I wouldn't really say he's been a good coach for bad players on the defensive side of the ball. That side of the ball has good players. Hughes, Poyer, Williams, Hyde, White, Milano, Alexander and to an extent Lawson are all good players. They don't really need "coaching up." The defensive side of the ball was good enough to keep them in 6 games, almost 7/8, this season. Is that really coaching up players and being a genius? Hard to know really. He hasn't shown he can coach up the offensive side of the ball, that much is certain. That group has preformed exactly as expected given the talent. So, is it really McDermott is a genius or they preformed as expected given the talent? I don't think he should be fired or anything but I don't think it's wrong to question his coaching ability a bit. As Badol says, now the test comes when he <hopefully> gets an influx of talent on the offensive side of the ball to see what he can do.

Report: Jets to pursue Jim Harbaugh for HC

And that’s the crux of it all. He should be overwhelming teams with speed and talent and yet he’s not. He just keeps doing the same crap. -
Again people..... This is the first year of a REBUILD
Wayne Cubed replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's exactly where I come down on the situation. Fans love to point at Watkins and say how badly he has preformed for the Rams/Chiegs but the reality is he's done better than what McD/Beane brought in to replace him and would have cost the same price, they had the rights to him until the end of this season. And he would fit this speed WR game they are now trying to employ. Instead McD/Beane decided they needed a big body possession WR, who they saw all those years in Carolina. Well actually they thought an oft injured WR from Philly would be enough and moving up to draft the wrong WR in the 2nd. It was a poor and failed decision, that much can't be argued. It terms of offensive talent, I'm not sure they have shown they can evaluate that side of the ball, so what makes anyone think they can fix that side of the ball with FA and this draft. They need a WR1 and WR2. Foster is a WR3 for me at this point and McKenzie is a WR4. Might as well keep Jones around as he's cheap and can be WR5. I'd look for a trade for a WR1 because one isn't coming available in FA and try again to draft a WR2, as I'm not sure there is a WR1 in this draft. And I think Allen has done a good job considering the situation and has improved, in areas, it has to make you wonder if they have correctly evaluated him. -
No, no one is saying that. You think people are saying that. It's about going with match ups and picking the right route and match up to go to. That doesn't mean Josh should never throw a back shoulder throw. What it means is, Zay Jones matched up against Gilmore, the Pats best CB, on a deep route, where he is getting blanketed is a low percentage play. Seeing Gilmore and knowing there are other routes and match ups, because the Pats are in man coverage across the field, Josh should weigh his options.
